Sugar addicts anonymous

My name is Fhee and I am a sugar addict. It has been approximately 13 hours since I ate a nutritionally void sweet treat. I am going cold turkey on:
Biscuits
Cake
Chocolate

I am not going low carb, but also out are any non-sweet treats that have the same impact on blood sugar, i.e. crisps.

I will not be cutting out fresh fruit. That’s just silly.

Anyone one else need some accountability?

Ooh I’m feeling very snacky. Fending it off with tea, water, oatcakes and a clementine so far…

Is it normal to feel absolutely pooped when you suddenly cut out sugar? I'm a zombie today D: Have been quite good today but feeling so exhausted. I don't think we actually have any chocolate in the house.

Fhee · 31/12/2021 16:49

I guess so? Your body is used to a ready supply of easy access energy. It takes some time for it to figure out it needs to use its energy stores instead.

Just remembered that there's a tub of Ben & Jerry's cookie dough ice cream in my freezer...............this is so bloody hard

And is there still a tub of Ben and Jerry’s icecream in the freezer? 😁

Anyone starting today?

Can I join please? I'm a good couple of stone overweight thanks to my sugar addiction. I have covid at the minute so I'm not eating much - a good kick start to going cold turkey! Hoping I can keep it up

Thethingswedidanddidntdo · 01/01/2022 13:45

@Fhee I'm starting today! I've already said no to chocolate left over from Christmas, and to jam on my croissant Halo

PeppaPigWorld · 01/01/2022 13:57

I've started today too. Feeling positive (despite the dreaded weigh in to get my starting weight.) I feel I'm in the right place mentally now. I'm determined to lose weight this year, and for the moment I've probably had enough sugary stuff over Christmas to not miss it initially. Might well have changed my tune by tomorrow though!

Newchallenge · 01/01/2022 14:05

Ok. Me too
I really need this, am addicted to sugar.

Cocolapew · 01/01/2022 14:11

My head is busting 😣
I've been pretty good, did have a 10 calorie jelly with chocolate squirty cream and I usually have a pint of diluted juicee on the go. I'm not giving the juice up because I won't drink as much otherwise, our tap water is stinking and I'm on medication that dries my mouth and throat up.
I've also eaten enough cheese and crackers to feed a small country Blush
Good luck everyone!

Misspacorabanne · 01/01/2022 14:11

Can I join please! I'd love to go sugar free!! Or as little as possible!

Fhee · 01/01/2022 21:30

Welcome all 😊

I have done four days now. Still getting hungry between meals, but noticing that a bit of cheese with a couple of oatcakes satisfies me. I know if I’d had a biscuit I’d then eat 6 in a row without even thinking about it.

Still getting chocolate cravings though.

Cocolapew · 01/01/2022 22:36

I'm really hungry Hmm I have replaced chocolate with carbs so I can't see the weight falling off me!
I've stayed off chocolate and I haven't had any sweet carbs, usually I'd be into the broiche and scones and iced fingers and ginger cake Blush.

Welcomebacksummer · 01/01/2022 23:08

Day 3 here! I have noticed that it simply easier to not eat any at all, rather than to reduce the amount. It's far easier than I initially thought, however the Christmas chocolates keep winking at me 😩

ShottaSheriff · 02/01/2022 05:41

Well done to those of you who’ve already started. I’m putting it off until Monday…need to do a decent shop and a meal plan.

SquirrelG · 02/01/2022 07:05

I can't go cold turkey, but I'm going to try a week or two of cutting down and then removing much of the sugar from my diet.

It's so hard though, and I have such a sweet tooth.

SquirrelG · 02/01/2022 07:11

I can have a relatively healthy day then feel insanely shaky and poorly and need (I think) sugar to make me feel better.

This happens to me too - I go great on day one, and then on day two I feel hot and shaky and I eat all the sugar I can find!

I'm going to try to cut back from tomorrow - although it doesn't help that I've just made a rhubarb crumble and have over half it left, and my friend is going to bring me a large chunk of Christmas cake next week (and I live alone).

It will be great to have some support.

Fhee · 02/01/2022 07:34

I see it as a two step process @Cocolapew, got to break the sugar highs/sugar crashes cycle first. What kind of carbs are you going for? Good to avoid sweet things but some savoury carbs will have the same effect on your blood sugar. Try to choose carbs that have a good chunk of protein and fibre too, so avoiding white bread/crackers etc., replacing with whole grains/rye/oats.

Can I join? Sugar is my downfall. In October I started round three (over the past 5 years) of cutting out sugary sweets (biscuits, cake, many many spoonfuls in coffee…). I almost go cold Turkey in that on Saturdays I get to have what I want, but during the rest of the week, sugary snacks are out. I’m no longer technically overweight but have about another stone I’d like to lose. Have also found that my weight, at 53, has started massively fluctuating - I can easily gain/lose up to 6lbs a week despite no material difference to diet/exercise, so am focusing on maintaining an overall downward trend rather than week to week.

Llamasally · 02/01/2022 08:40

Can I join please? I am well and truly addicted and had my first cold turkey day yesterday- have a constant headache and thinking about a hidden box of chocs my husband had somewhere. Off on a long walk with the DCs soon to take myself away!

seething1234 · 02/01/2022 09:06

I'm a sugar addict but can't see my life without it. Breakfast is a coffee with sugar and cream and a scone and jam, if I have porridge I have to have honey. In work it's chocolate bars instead of lunch, then after dinner it's tea and a pile of biscuits. I cannot have a tea or coffee without chocolate or biscuits. I'm piling on the weight. I think I'm going to pick a day to start and try doing 30 days.

Thethingswedidanddidntdo · 02/01/2022 09:38

@seething1234 if you can find a way to have a less sugary breakfast then you might crack the whole thing - your body uses the breakfast sugar quickly and then sets you up for a day of craving. Good luck!

Cocolapew · 02/01/2022 12:01

I'm definitely not giving up carbs 🙈, I did a no carb diet this time last year. The weight fell off me but I felt awful I ended up fainting Blush
I have loads of crackers left from Xmas and I usually eat dark rye Ryvita.
I used to eat sweet bready stuff all the time, even more so than chocolate.
When my Dad was ill I took cravings for crumbles and jam sponge type puddings heated up with cream. Proper stodgy comfort food.
I swam for an hour this morning which is about 15 minutes more than I usually do.

Fhee · 02/01/2022 17:58

I definitely can’t do no/low carb! I just meant check the carbs you are having, but it sounds like you’re on the right track anyway 🙂

My studying is getting stressful, if I get stuck and panic I have an immediate impulse to go raid the biscuits/crisps etc. Definitely an emotional trigger 😬
