Any Lardy fatties in their 50's want to join me in weight loss

Morning, I'm looking for some company in my quest to lose the lard.

I'm useless at dieting, I have managed to shift one stone since Christmas but I keep losing and gaining, rinse and repeat.

Anyone up for joining me.

Hello, can I join in? I'm 51 years old and weigh 21.7 stones. Am only 5ft 2 inches tall so either need to lose at least half my weight or grow 2 feet taller; am starting to think the growing taller would be easier! Started 'behaving myself' around food today and I am snappy and grumpy! Trying to drink loads of water and low sugar drinks and eat sensibly avoiding as much carbs and sugar as possible (diagnosed Type 2 Diabetic a year ago and although I know what I need to do, have kind of stuck my head in the sand for a year). Confused

Babymamamama · 19/07/2021 17:54

Gingernaut that sounds like a good formula for you. Lighthouseblue Welcome. We are all at different points and using different methods but it’s so nice to share experiences with women at a similar age and stage. Sounds like you know what you need to do. It can be really hard to get started. I bought a digital scale (the scales don’t lie) and the nurse at the GPs gave me a firm talking to which shocked me into my current weight loss journey. I’m doing it purely for health. Why don’t you post about your first steps? That might help motivate you? The first week was definitely the worst for me.

steppemum · 20/07/2021 18:15

Well done Gingernaut!
Welcome Lighthouseblue.
We are all here because we are trying to change long habits, and it is slow and boring at our age, but this thread has helped me.
I've been on some of the other weight loss threads and got discouraged. This one is just right.

I started for several reaons

  1. Covid. realising I was in a dnager category due to weight was a shock
  2. photos. Every photo taken in the last few years has been 100% awful, just. so. fat.
  3. age. I know if I want to live to see grandchildren, I need to get healthier

but that doesn't make any of it easy.

steppemum · 20/07/2021 18:16

Had to buy a swimsuit yesterday.
Quick purchase, Asda off the shelf one piece. Needs to be 'respectable' as it is for swimming with kids at kids camp.

I bought it, and it is OK, but it is a size 20 and I might go back and get the 18....

Babymamamama · 20/07/2021 19:30

Oooh steppemum that’s got to be a good feeling going for a smaller size cozzie. I’ve also got a swimming date coming up. Need to try on my various swimsuits in preparation to see which one makes me feel the least lardy…..

nutbutter1 · 23/07/2021 18:24

Can I join in here too please . I am doing second nature but find the forums hard to keep up with . Also I am kind of only getting back in the zone after a long plateau . Been off work this week and lived on ice creams and huala hoops and ham and coleslaw rolls . I feel ugh now . I do my daily habits or at least try too .

steppemum · 23/07/2021 23:53

I got the size 18, and I'm grinning from ear to ear!

Trouble is, no-one noticed when you go from extremely fat to very fat Angry.
You have to get right down to slim before anyone notices.

(Hmm, I am liking this scale actually
extremely fat
very fat
too fat
fat
fatter than overweight
overweight
bit podgy
normal

about 1/2 - 1 stone between each level.

I think I might use it to see how I am getting on Grin

I've moved from extremely fat to very fat.

That feels more encouraging than numbers!

Or maybe we should use the thread title

Lardy fatties
butter fatties
margarine fatties

etc etc Grin

TrueGrit54 · 24/07/2021 12:25

Joining too please. I am fat and fifties, it’s really not easy is it! I have been lurking and ready to give it a go. I have a holiday in early October and would love to lose 2 stone by then, two stone in 10 weeks should be possible but any loss would be fab. If I lost 1 stone I would feel a lot better. I have been overweight for 2 years now, before that I was always slim. Honestly not sure if I ever will be again but I would like to try. DH is ageing much better than me, he is very fit and I feel and look very dumpy and don’t fit in my clothes. I also have very poor muscle strength, going up stairs hurts, standing up from squatting putting washing in the washing machine is very difficult, I am pulling myself up by the counter top rather than using my legs. I honestly think my mum in her 80s is fitter than me. Two years ago I had completed C25K comfortably. It’s scary how things have deteriorated.

It’s nice to have some new joiners on the thread. Everyone working on their own goals. I find the weekends harder than week days. I think it’s being less busy and more temptations. But I’m trying to stay focused. Yesterday I ordered DD take out pizza and didn’t have any I had salmon and cucumber instead. I actually enjoyed it and didn’t miss the carbs. I’m half way to my goal weight. But I’m impatient and I wish I could fast track a bit more.

ThinWomansBrain · 25/07/2021 09:50

well done steppemum - I know what you mean about the going from extremely fat to very fat.

After starting "healthy eating" at the beginning of June (avoiding the "D" word) I was very good for five weeks, lost it a bit in the sixth, complete lapse in 7 & 8. Hence avoiding this thread for a bit. On the plus side, I had lost 5.5 kilos, and have only regained 0.5, so not too disastrous, it's more losing the mindset that I need to get back to.

Those incredibly hot days in the week were horrendous - reminded why I need to lose weight, soo unpleasant, and I'm sure it wouldn't have been as bad if I wasn't sooo heavy.

I had to get more cat litter in the week - 30 litre bag, so I'm assuming 30kg.
It was really hard to pick up and move, and I happily let the pets at home guy carry it to my car. On the car to home end, it dawned on me that this is the same amount of weight that I am lugging around all day, every day (OK, now only need to lose 25kg) but good enough incentive to get back to it.

So, back to sensible eating, and posting on here for accountability, Please someone, if you haven't seen me post here in a few days, "@" or DM me, and it will bring me back!

ThinWomansBrain · 25/07/2021 09:57

& bought new pyjamas - by default went to grab the size 18 - stopped and took a look at the 16, and went for those and they're fine. OK, pyjamas aren't the most tailored fit to judge by.
I also bought a bra, usual size, went nowhere near fitting me when I got it home - looked at the label, and although the hanger label said 38D, the label inside the bra was 34b, so after the initial shock, super cross with M&S outlet rather than myself.

wakeupnshakeup · 25/07/2021 09:58

I'm back checking in.. not sure what happened 🤦‍♀️ I've signed up to Team RH which id been reading up about for a while, this will make me more accountable!! Stepped on the scales for day one weigh in and was surprised I wasn't heavier so that's a good start.

Going to give it my best shot! 15k steps a day might be pushing it 😆

TrueGrit54 · 25/07/2021 14:06

Babymamamama thanks for the welcome, ThinWomansBrain enjoyed your cat litter story. I went and picked up my dogs 10 kg kibble bag. I need to lose a bit more than that. It is so heavy, no wonder I feel terrible. I have a small frame (under the fat), narrow shoulders so clothes look terrible on me, skinny legs but big rolls on my stomach.

Cross with myself, day 1 yesterday and I skipped breakfast, bread and dip for lunch, salmon, broccoli and courgettes for dinner and then a large bag of Doritos and the wine happened. Have thrown rest of Doritos in bin and bread is now strictly forbidden (I think it sets me off). Sorry everyone.

Today is coffee for breakfast, tomato salad for lunch, roast chicken, cauliflower, courgettes and broccoli for dinner.

Mum4Fergus · 25/07/2021 15:26

Hi folks, can I join please? 19st 9lbs 52 year old needing to get her act together before she takes an early shuffle off this mortal coil.

Babymamamama · 25/07/2021 18:14

Welcome Mum4Fergus have you made a plan? It can be hard to get started but finding what works for you can be so important. I can’t calorie count so I do the fasting instead. And I’m a bit lazy with the exercise although I do try (sometimes).

Mum4Fergus · 25/07/2021 19:14

Thank you! No set plan in mind, I need to find what works for me...stop the wine of an evening, get more active-I'm still working from home and have literally going from bed to office to sofa eating crap the whole route. Today has been a good day...lots of fruit and veg, but more active than normal (wouldn't be hard!)...no wine, so far or fatty foods. Happy with that...

Babymamamama · 26/07/2021 08:13

My weight seems to be getting stuck again. I’m still doing the one meal a day but that seems just to be maintaining the weight now. So I’m not gaining. I’ve had this before with a plateau. Ahhh. So frustrating. Guess I’m going to have to exercise more. At least it’s not so boiling now.

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 27/07/2021 11:04

Don't get disheartened @Babymamamama - keep going, it will shift eventually.

Scales yesterday weren't my friend - back up to 10st 2 after what I thought wasn't an excessive weekend... However, back to 9st 13.8 this morning on the Renpho scales so I guess they were just scaring me!

Have kept my other more basic digital scales (Salter ones I had for years that only do weight and nothing else) - interestingly on any given day the 2 readings vary from agreeing same weight to 6lb differences. Today they were 5.5lb different with no discernible reason - both on solid floor etc and calibrated. About a month ago they weighed exactly the same... the only thing I wondered about is whether heat/humidity affect them given the Renpho scare body fat etc analysis scales... but I guess I'm looking for excuses as it is really odd!

TrueGrit54 · 27/07/2021 11:20

Babymamamama sending sympathy, frustrating when you are following your plan but it stalls.

Don’t know what to say here, in a rut, not doing what I know I need to do. I think I will try reading the books again in bed and try to get inspired. Just feeling very flat. I have plumber and electrician in to fix a problem, they are nice but I hate them being here! Needs must.

Babymamamama · 27/07/2021 13:21

Ah thanks people. After all my moaning about being properly stuck I’ve lost two pounds yesterday and it seems to have stayed off today. I’m thrilled. I’m going all out with the walking now. Maybe that makes the difference? Goodness it’s crazy how these little wins can feel good. And I’m not really discussing with anyone in real life so it’s great to share on this thread. The good and the bad Grin

TrueGrit54 · 27/07/2021 13:55

Babymamamama when you have a minute would you share how long you walk for and how often please. My fitness is poor at the moment and I think walking would be the best thing for me. We have a cross trainer but I think walking outside might boost my mood too.

Great news you have dropped another 2 lbs.

Readytostartagain · 27/07/2021 17:33

I was on this thread early on but I have a few personal issues and my headband not been in the right place. I know what I need to do but my motivation has been awol. Think I may give it another go- starting properly on 1 August but will try and be mindful until then about what I’m eating. I lost 3.5 stones a while back and gave another 2.5 to go.

Babymamamama · 27/07/2021 18:19

@ TrueGrit54 no prob I just try to fit in as many steps as I can in the day (between work appts or in lunch break). Anywhere between 5000 and 12000 steps. I think I’m averaging about 7000 now. But honestly the main thing for me is the intermittent fasting. The walking is like a booster for the fasting. I’ve lost about a stone and a half now and want to lose about another stone to get towards the middle of the healthy BMI range. So I’ve got a fair way still to go. And this plateau thing seems to happen every few weeks. I blame my hormones and age Grin

Babymamamama · 27/07/2021 18:21

@Readytostartagain sounds like you know exactly what to do- it’s about being ready isn’t it? I had to really get to the point of no return, the GP gave me a firm talking to and then I realised enough is enough.

TrueGrit54 · 27/07/2021 20:29

Babymamamama thank you, yes I think a two or three pronged approach makes sense. IF, lower carbs and daily fast walking. Sighs. I’ve never really been fat before, I do think it’s partly an age/hormone thing but I also am retired and generally inactive.
