I was always slim to skinny but after DD 2 I did put on about a stone and a half. Way too much for my frame but it took me ages to lose it as I kept eating crisps because I bloody love them.

Well I stopped taking the bag to the sofa. I put some in a small bowl and make myself sit at the table to eat them.

Then that's that. No more.

Of course it wasn't just crisps but I did eat a LOT of them...a big bag all alone at least 3 times per week because I didn't have time to cook for myself.

Sweets I don't really eat but chocolate I do....so I put a few squares on a saucer and take those to the table too!

Lazily sitting on the sofa and scoffing crisps is no more! I have lost a stone over the past 6 months doing this...yes I've been walking daily too and drinking Kombucha.

Not a fan of carrot in it personally. I ferment carrot separately 😁

truthisalie · 20/02/2021 17:44

SchrodingersImmigrant, never heard of fermented carrots 😬. I must Google them.

truthisalie · 20/02/2021 17:45

Oh, the pictures look very attractive.

You can ferment ANYTHING😂 in some way. Yeah just treat it like a cucumber with the brine. Very nice. Fermented onion is also lovely. I use it in salads and cooking.
truthisalie · 20/02/2021 19:48

SchrodingersImmigrant, sounds very nice. I'll try to marinate carrots. I love marinated baby cucumbers, baby courgettes, apples and tomatoes. I also love marinated fish but hate it when it contains too much vinegar.
But the only thing I have tried to marinate myself is the cabbage. Next one will be the carrots ☺️

WomenAndVulvas · 20/02/2021 19:48

Homemade is usually between 2-3% salt.

I have dabbled a bit with fermenting foods, mainly kimchi and water kefir. I haven't tried sauerkraut yet but would love to give it a go. Doesn't the high salt content cancel out any health benefits though? 2% salt means that a 100 g portion contains 2 g salt, but 100 g isn't much is it?

truthisalie · 20/02/2021 19:49

marinate meant ferment. But fish probably is marinated as contains vinegar although sometimes it contains salt only and herbs.

DenisetheMenace · 20/02/2021 19:50

Just what are you trying to say to @DenisetheMenace?? 😂😂😂

I was preparing to be offended. Then looked in a mirror 😩

You shouldn't eat toooo much of it. I don't salt much, or actually barely at all, other stuff so I guess it balances. If I use it on/in anything, I don't add any extra salt.
SchrodingersImmigrant · 20/02/2021 19:54

@truthisalie gove them a try. I am big fan of these foods. If you look on insta there is lots of profiles doing some really interesting ferments.
And lots of recipes and tips online.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 20/02/2021 19:54

@DenisetheMenace sorry😂

truthisalie · 20/02/2021 19:59

WomenAndVulvas, it's normally suggested to use 1 table spoon of sea/rock salt (not iodine or anything similar) for 1kg of shredded cabbage but I use less salt.
Some people don't use salt at all but I don't know how it tastes.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 20/02/2021 20:00

But withoit salt it just goes off? Like actually off, not edible off?😱

SchrodingersImmigrant · 20/02/2021 20:04

Just weighted tablespoon of salt and it's about 19g so that's 2%. I was curious🙈

truthisalie · 20/02/2021 20:06

No idea. Some people really make it without salt and say it's fine (they claim it to be delicious in fact). Who knows. I like mine with salt.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 20/02/2021 20:09

I am with you on that. I don't think I would dare without salt.
I am well below the sodium allowance most days so if I go over for delicious main meal of crapload of sauerkraut with chicken and potatoes every 2 weeks, it's fine😁
It's delicious as a snack on a cracker with mustard and salami. That uses 50g approx for 2 crackers

truthisalie · 20/02/2021 20:20

I love it for my breakfast with fried eggs, for example. Sometimes I use oil but it tastes nice without oil as well. You need proper oil for the sauerkraut like roasted sunflower seeds oil or sesame seeds oil. Olive oil doesn't go with it. Hemp oil is fine but I wouldn't use it.
It also goes well with mashed potatoes.

Chopped sweet onions or spring onions, sweet cherry tomatoes would make a nice salad.

I am curious about fermented red cabbage. I have never tried it.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 20/02/2021 20:37

That sounds lovely!
Red cabbage is great too!
I am funny with kimchi. I like all the things that go in. But separately. Can't eat ot together. Absolutely cannot bear the taste of kimchi🙈

truthisalie · 20/02/2021 21:40

SchrodingersImmigrant I like kimchi in soup or with mashed potatoes but I only tried shop bought. Kimchi requires so many ingredients to make it. One day maybe.

LindaEllen · 20/02/2021 21:45

It's not really a miracle weight loss tip though is it? We all know that to lose weight we have to eat less.

It does. My dh gets shop bought too. Some are lovely. Do you like spicy? You can make fermented hot sauces. Oh. My. God. I think it amplifies the chili. Amazing. There are some recipes out there so give it a try in some little jar if you ever fancy. Ours was a murder in a jar but beautiful taste (said the taste buds which did not die)😂
lazylinguist · 20/02/2021 22:18

I don’t understand why people eat crisps.

Confused Because they taste nice. Eating crisps from a bowl instead of a bag, or at a table rather than on the sofa, doesn't make you lose weight though.

I don't eat a load of crisps instead of a proper meal several times a week, and I literally never sit and snack on the sofa in the evening. Doesn't mean I'm slim though.

truthisalie · 20/02/2021 22:21

SchrodingersImmigrant, my DH loves kimchi as well but the shop bought jars are tiny and expensive. Mind you, Waitrose sells what looks like homemade sourkraut in a small plastic pot (salad area) which also costs too much knowing the cabbage is so cheap; you only need cabbage and salt basically to make sauerkraut and no gas or electricity.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 20/02/2021 22:26

@truthisalie yup. It's not the cheapest! It's his treat😁 Mine is cheese.
I make sauerkraut every few weeks. I have basically at least 2 ferments in a fridge at any given time. I used to buy fresh in polish shop but I prefer to make my own now.

truthisalie · 20/02/2021 23:19

SchrodingersImmigrant, it is a treat indeed! I have tried Polish sauerkraut from Asda only but it had too much water in it. I guess it was fermented in marinade rather than in its own brine.
