No S Diet - Anyone got quite a lot to lose and fancy trying a more longterm approach - no quick fixes!

HenriettaHeffalump · 03/02/2021 08:34

I have just discovered I've gone into the obese category. I am starting today doing something I have tried before and found great. I need something I can stick to longterm and which will improve my eating habits as well, so that when I do hopefully lose the weight, I can keep it off.

It is called the No S Diet.

Rules are:

No sweets
No snacks
No seconds

Except on days beginning with S! Sounds twee and gimmicky, but I swear it works if I stick to it.

Starting weight - 200 lbs
Height - 5'8"
BMI - 30.3 (obese category Blush)

I will also be taking up more exercise. Not going at it hell for leather like I always do, which never works as I can't do that anymore. So, slow and steady with exercise too.

Would love some slow and steady weight loss / healthy living buddies!

Just made a huge pot of Bolognese on for tea which smells gorgeous. Trying to have a no s day as Wednesday I have a family birthday and they have asked for sticky toffee pudding. Love the sound of all these baths and self care that may be my Saturday night planned

chillied · 20/02/2021 18:11

I started no sugar no snacks last Monday. (will have to work my way to no seconds!).

I'm heavier than you OP!

I'm not weighing, but I will be weighed as part of the medication checking at a health appointment in early March. And I know what those same scales said in early December! So that will be an inescapable check.

I do well on low carb but I can't muster the willpower for it, so this will be the start.

Whynow2020 · 20/02/2021 19:05

My Saturday night treat is a couple of glasses of Prosecco and a wispa bar (consumed while marching the baby around the village in the pram in an attempt to induce sleep!). Have been good apart from that today though:

B: Greek yoghurt, almonds and satsuma
L: spinach tomato and cheese frittata
D: baked salmon with broccoli carrots and cubed roasted potatoes with a bit of goats cheese for good measure

I did sneak four mini eggs this afternoon too

LittleDoritt · 20/02/2021 22:21

Ahh, that sounds like a nice treat night WhyNow!

I could have easily caved and demolished an apple turnover that DH brought home for me this evening, but having had a pastry already today I had my bath and stayed strong. If it has escaped the other Doritts by the morning I might have it as tomorrow's S. Really liking this WOE so far and feeling positive Smile

HenriettaHeffalump · 20/02/2021 22:47

Well done LittleD! Glad you're enjoying it and feeling positive about it. I am too Smile!

I'm in bed already. No spin bike and probably not the best of afternoons foodwise. No disasters, but not what I'd planned, as I ended up picking at things before dinner. I know why it happened and it was because I didn't eat a proper meal at lunchtime! Anyway, at least it's an S Day! Lesson learnt for tomorrow. Need to eat properly at meal times. As soon as I'd had dinner (a proper meal) I knew I was done for the day and didn't even think about snacking. Anyway, I'm going to read my book and then 😴. Night all!

lucky you not thinking about snacking yesterday evening Henri. I had my curry, delicious, sat down to watch a film & instantly felt twitchy for something to snack on. I couldn't relax the whole film. Realise I so associate sitting down of an evening (usually not til 9pm) with a glass of wine and something to munch on. I resisted, but was v hard.

Long brisk walk already done. Lunch will be eggs & spinach on sourdough. Dinner will be salmon encroute with roast veg & baby new potato. Not sure what my S will be today.

am absolutely in awe of you why. How can anyone manage 4 mini eggs without demolishing the whole bag / tube ??????

eltsihT · 21/02/2021 12:11

I had a great day yesterday,
B: toast and marmite.
L: pie and beans and a doughnut.
D: pork chop and curry sauce with mash potatoes. DH made it and forgot to do veg Hmm and a fake magnum

Whilst watching TV in the evening, I really enjoyed having a few fruit pastels as DH hand managed not to eat the whole bag by himself on Friday.

Today got off to a good start, but I had some work to catch up on so my class teams are ready for the new week, so I have had a bag of crisps and 4 chocolate biscuits while working, I really enjoyed them, but it will make not snacking tomorrow harder.

HenriettaHeffalump · 21/02/2021 14:38

Well done elt! Sounds like a good day.

All ok here today.

Breakfast wasn't great and then I was nibbling before lunch, but again, a decent lunch has made the snack goblin shut up!

B: a hot crossed bun (see the problem Wink)?
Nibbling before lunch on a handful of crisps and a piece of plain bread
L: lentil and goats cheese salad again (lentils were leftover from the other day). This time with cubes of apple and a different type of goats cheese. Maybe not so good as last time...I think because it was cold and it was different cheese. Still nice though and filling.
D: DH is making roast pork for everyone else. I will have the veg and I might make a cauliflower cheese instead of the pork

Argh, I made the mistake of getting on the scales. Sad I don't know why I do this to myself. I thought that eight days of walking a minimum of three miles and four days of no snacks and very limited crap would mean a great water-weight loss at least and be a mental boost. Of course, I've out on 0.4lbs so now I feel rubbish. Stupid.

Your food sounds nice Buzz.

Well done for learning from your mistakes Hen and realising why you nibble. It will help so much as you go on with this journey.

Had a mediocre day nutrition wise but I haven't snacked at all, everything will be three set meal times, so that's something.

B: Porridge with raspberries
L: Ham and cheese toastie, and an apple turnover Hmm
D: Planned to be breaded cod with lots of broccoli, cauliflower and sprouts.

HenriettaHeffalump · 21/02/2021 17:24

Oh no! Keep at it LittleD! 0.4 of a lb could honestly be anything!

Keep at it! If you like, weigh in with us next Friday and see how it's going. If it's not going in the right direction, then maybe you can think about changing some things. But dont panic! It's early days for all of us Smile.

LittleDoritt · 21/02/2021 18:13

You're absolutely right, and my rational brain knows this, but the stupid part of my brain which let me get so fat in the first place wants an overnight cure!

I'm now adding two glasses of prosecco to my menu for the day Wink

HenriettaHeffalump · 21/02/2021 18:21

I think we have similar dieting brains LittleD! All of the advice I'm spouting, I am also giving to myself!

I have so much to lose that imagining a quick fix is just stupid. It didn't come on overnight and it sure as hell won't disappear overnight. Hence the longterm approach with something I can stand longterm!

This sounds great. Long term achievable and not too much pressure as I am precariously close to the edge atm anyway. Can I please join? I can't face weighing as the heaviest I have ever been but will know from clothes etc if I lose over time. That's ok. Weighing might tip me over the edge, I am a coward.

Starting tomorrow Smile

HenriettaHeffalump · 21/02/2021 19:06

Totally fine not to weigh! Welcome @goingpearshaped Smile.

Hope everyone is ready for No S day tomorrow! I feel fine about it.

Will try and get some decent exercise in tomorrow. We had a family walk today, but the 3yo got absolutely CAKED in mud, so we had to cut it a bit short. I was tired this morning when I woke up. Very unfair to wake up groggy the morning after a Saturday night without a drop of alcohol Hmm. Oh well. I will wait for this alleged energy burst with the no alcohol! Maybe in a few weeks.

Thanks @HenriettaHeffalump! I am in. Good luck with the exercise. I did a run today which was okay. Also need to up the exercise. That helps me mentally. Good luck all :)

Really appreciate finding this thread as have struggled how to tackle my weight gain in a way that does not feel too overwhelming. I know I can do this if I can have a treat on Sat.

goingpearshaped · 21/02/2021 20:30

Dim question but is fruit considered as a snack. E.g. apple after lunch? Not trying to cheat, just asking!

Bramblecrumble · 21/02/2021 20:34

@goingpearshaped. I'd say an apple with lunch is good and healthy as a snack is about when not what. Extra points if you squeeze it on your plate with the rest of lunch.

HenriettaHeffalump · 21/02/2021 20:36

Yes, fruit can be part of a meal, but it has to all go on one plate! I quite often used to plate up a meal with the fruit on it, then take it off to eat the main bit, followed by the fruit. Sounds a bit weird, but I think the idea is that you can see how much you are eating if you only ever have one plate of food. Also it helps you see what you're eating, so if most of your plate is eg crisps and there is no fruit and veg every meal, you'll soon cotton on, that it probably isn't such a great idea. The one plate should be a reasonably normal looking plate of food, not piled into a mountain to beat the system iyswim.

goingpearshaped · 21/02/2021 21:44

Thank you @Bramblecrumble and @HenriettaHeffalump, that makes lots of sense. I do often add apple etc on my lunch plate so need to do this more. Much appreciated!

LittleDoritt · 21/02/2021 23:09

Welcome Goingpearshaped.

Fingers crossed for a good five non-S days for all of us!

Bramblecrumble · 22/02/2021 07:15

Hiya, I mostly stayed off this group for the weekend as I wanted my no s to be a switch off from the diet. This week I'm working 3 12 hour day shifts. I'm never sure with these to eat one or two meals at work. I've packed eneugh for two but I usually have a snack in the evening.

Whynow2020 · 22/02/2021 09:39

I weighed in this morning...14.12 down from 15.2! Pretty happy with that!! Especially as I did let go a bit over the weekend, had a full roast yesterday with pudding and too many roast potatoes! The no snacking thing really does seem to help.
@LittleDoritt- keep at it, remember this is a long term goal and think about all the health benefits of the exercise you’ve been doing that aren’t related to weight.

Welcome @goingpearshaped

@buzzofthebumblebee there were only four left!! So no awe required 😂

HenriettaHeffalump · 22/02/2021 09:51

Ah that's brilliant WhyNow! Well done!!!

You are so right re exercise. And the thing is, weight takes time to come off in any significant way. Exercise is something you can do to start improving your heath right then and there. They say if exercise was a drug, they would call it a superdrug. And it improves your metabolism if you build muscle, so weight loss becomes easier.

This is all very convenient info, as I've just done half an hour on my spin bike and core workout. So sweaty, but that's a good thing I guess Hmm. #indoorsy Grin

About to make late breakfast. Homeschooling today. Fingers crossed about the announcement later. Hoping dc1 can get back to school!

Bramble, yes, totally understand that, not wanting to be on the thread on weekends, so you get a break from thinking about it. Makes sense.

Good luck today everyone!
