No S Diet - Anyone got quite a lot to lose and fancy trying a more longterm approach - no quick fixes!

HenriettaHeffalump · 03/02/2021 08:34

I have just discovered I've gone into the obese category. I am starting today doing something I have tried before and found great. I need something I can stick to longterm and which will improve my eating habits as well, so that when I do hopefully lose the weight, I can keep it off.

It is called the No S Diet.

Rules are:

No sweets
No snacks
No seconds

Except on days beginning with S! Sounds twee and gimmicky, but I swear it works if I stick to it.

Starting weight - 200 lbs
Height - 5'8"
BMI - 30.3 (obese category Blush)

I will also be taking up more exercise. Not going at it hell for leather like I always do, which never works as I can't do that anymore. So, slow and steady with exercise too.

Would love some slow and steady weight loss / healthy living buddies!

Oh stress eating is a killer elt! And boredome eating for me too. Everyone probably looks at me and thinks "oh look how slim you were for your wedding, because you made an effort and now you've let yourself go", for example. Ok, not everyone. My friends are nicer than that! But you know.

The fact is if you're preoccupied with something really fun and exciting, I tend not to eat to compensate for being bored or sad. Anyway, this WOE I'm really hopeful about as, I am feeling the reverse; now that I'm not totally fixated on the fridge and what I can snack on next, I'm feeling more present about other things. Must try and stay in this zone and this thread is really helping me do that Flowers

PS: those do look like super fancy scales elt!

Chicken salad with chilli oil for lunch- was really tasty and plenty of fresh stuff- pan fried chicken breast, tender stem broccoli, baby spinach, rocket, cherry tomatoes. Hoping to avoid the afternoon slump I get if I have a sandwich for lunch.

Dinner is home made pizza...do I allow myself that or go salad again?!

HenriettaHeffalump · 19/02/2021 13:25

Oh that sounds lovely why! I am a chilli fiend, so anything with chilli oil sounds good to me!

I'd probably have pizza but portion it out on your plate before you eat it? I did that the other day and found I put out less when I could see it all there on my plate iyswim. Or you could go halfway and have a salad with some carbs? Not a bad carb if you want to avoid, but maybe some lentils or brown rice or oatcakes or couscous or bulghar wheat?

I'm about to make a salad out of puy lentils, goats cheese, toasted nuts, with some oatcakes.

Tonight will be (sounds weird, but I like it), tuna mayo, with sweetcorn and red onion on steamed rice. Dcs and dh are having spaghetti and meatballs, but I am going pescetarian (and no booze) for lent.

Well done everyone! No gains at all has to be good. I was tempted to weigh this morning but seeing as I've only been doing it one day I would just have been setting myself up for a fall! Grin I have 5.5lbs to lose to get myself out of the "about to die from obesity" range, so that is my first goal and hopefully shouldn't take too long.

I'm doing alright so far although fast approaching the time of day when I'm first tempted to raid the cupboards. Now til about five, and then 8.30-10pm seem to be my worst snacking times.

B: A bowl of Alpen
L: Seafood chowder with a slice of bread and butter
D: Planned to be gammon with lots of veg and corn on the cob.

buzzofthebumblebee · 19/02/2021 16:19

Hold strong littleD. No snacking allowed. Water, tea, or a herbal tea instead? Or go for a walk? Make it through now til dinner as one step. Then after dinner as the next step. Then you can tick off another day! Yes, easier said than done. We are all willing you & each other on.
I'm really sure you will see a big loss by this time next week.

Newstartneeded21 · 19/02/2021 16:38

Well done everyone in their results you all seem to be doing really well. STS here which is fine as I wasn’t great at sticking to the rules until Wednesday so hoping for a loss next week. This is my difficult part of the day after I finish work until dinner so I’ve put my audio book on to listen to to distract me from food.

HenriettaHeffalump · 19/02/2021 16:49

I find between now and dinner time quite tough too. I'm putting the kettle on Brew. Could use some water too.

My lunch was amazing btw! I was cooking my lentils thinking...hmmm this is going to he horrible isn't it? But it was really nice. Puy lentils, cooked in veg stock and fresh thyme, roasted carrots and pear mixed through the lentils, cubes of goats cheese on top, a honey mustard dressing and crushed toasted nuts on top of that. Sounds faffy and it was by my usual standards, but really lovely.

I took my 3yo to the park this PM, taking the long way round so I got a good walk, then tried to get some exercise in at the park, as far as I could without looking like an utter bellend! There was nobody there except us, so we went on the trampoline together which was quite a good mini workout and then ran for ages round this little bit of track. Good for us both. I will try to get on my spin bike later as well.

littleD stay strong! The habit is the worst I think. Once it's been broken there'll be no stopping us!

OP posts:
HenriettaHeffalump · 19/02/2021 16:55

PS: it was one of those big trampolines designed to hold a few children, so it did hold my weight!! No trampolines were harmed Grin

Great idea for long term but sustainable approach

LittleDoritt · 19/02/2021 21:13

Thanks Buzz! I did indeed go for a walk, and no snacks have touched these lips Grin If I do anywhere near as well as your 4lbs next week I'll be dead chuffed.

What's your audiobook Newstart?

Well done on all your impromptu exercise Hen! I get such bad vertigo that I can't trampoline for more than about three bounces before I'm ready to throw up.

What's everyone planning for their S days? I don't feel like I should have much as I've only just begun, but then, next weekend feels quite far off! Plus, I have a pain au raisin in the cupboard...

HenriettaHeffalump · 19/02/2021 21:47

Well, I have made it to bedtime...nearly. I did a half hour on my spin bike just now. Having an elderflower & tonic with DH before bed.

Well done littleD! The beginning is the hardest bit I remember. I think after a few weeks it will feel natural 🤞.

Not sure what to have on my S Days tbh...but I will have something. Maybe will bake something, although then I might end up with half a cake left on Monday, which I should probably avoid! Maybe will buy a portion of something, like a muffin maybe. Will decide tomorrow. It feels like a ridiculously big decision to me at the moment 🤣.

HenriettaHeffalump · 19/02/2021 22:02

And thanks Bookworm! I agree! Hope it works out. Certainly feels like it will at the moment.

@LittleDoritt I’m listening to the latest Anne Cleeves Vera book. I’ve borrowed it from the library and it’s engaging enough to stop me thinking about a biscuit 😃

eltsihT · 20/02/2021 07:24

I am planning on making 12 fairy cakes, that way I can have 1/2 and my 2 DS and DH can eat the rest! Although saying that, cakes set demolished pretty quickly with a 7 and 9 yo! I am not looking forward to the teenage years!

Yesterday was
B:toast and marmite
L: 2 ham sandwiches apple and crisps
D: pepperoni and sweetcorn pizza.

And no snack! I got really peckish at 3 again but made myself an instant coffee, which really helped. Going to try that again when the 3pm snack attack happens! I also had a Sherry at 8ish which sipping at meant I didn’t help DH demolish a bag of fruit pastels . Hopefully he has left some so I can have a few tonight.

I am planning an S day on Thursday as Tom McRae is doing an Instagram gig (he did 3 in the spring/summer last year) and I need peanuts and whiskey to enjoy it properly!

HenriettaHeffalump · 20/02/2021 08:58

The whisky, you can definitely do on no S Days! I'm not having alcohol for Lent, but that is nothing to do with No S. Last time I did it, I don't think I reduced my wine intake at all. I don't drink huge amounts, but a couple of glasses of wine a few days a week normally.

Yesterday was:

B: kale smoothie bowl
L: lentil, goats cheese and roast carrot & pear salad plus two thin oatcakes
D: tuna mayo, sweetcorn and rice (actually, I didn't enjoy this this time! Probably after my unexpected success at lunchtime).

1 x elderflower and sugar free tonic in the evening.

Still pondering what S to have today! So far just a Brew.

Whynow2020 · 20/02/2021 10:43

I went for it with the home made pizza and it was bloody lovely! Kept off the ice cream though and didn’t hoover up kids leftovers so I’m taking that as a win.

Hope everyone has a lovely Saturday, sun is out here so I might try and get out in the garden and do some tidying uo

HenriettaHeffalump · 20/02/2021 10:47

Much cleaning and tidying needed here too why! I'm waiting for DH to get home and then I'm having an Epsom Salt bath and doing face mask and pedicure. So tidying house and my hooves/visage Grin

Morning ladies ! Sounds as though everyone are being strong food wise, and have some nice things planned for today. I have surpassed myself and made it out for a 3rd run this morning! I woke before 7 which is v unusual for me, and got myself up and out for another v slow 5k plod. The extra weight I'm lugging around makes it hard for sure, but then I think of all of the rubbish I have eaten of late, & I'm not surprised.

I won't dwell or beat myself up about it - no point. But hopefully stronger emotionally now, & I look forward to feeling slimmer for when summer arrives.

My special treat will be a delicious dinner of home made beef, cauli & spinach curry, boiled rice, with popadoms, chutneys, and indian snack selection from M&S. Yum yum yum. I reckon if it will be less calories & fat making my own than take away treat. So I can have couple GnT's too!

HenriettaHeffalump · 20/02/2021 13:12

Oh that sounds lovely buzz! The early morning run and the meal! I never get up until a child wake me up, which is usually 7.30ish.

I am patiently (or not so patiently Grin) awaiting this extra energy I've heard so much about when you cut out alcohol... I suppose it hasn't even been a full week yet, so can't expect miracles. That plus the lighter mornings might mean some lovely early morning running / slow plodding!

Just had an amazing bath, with face mask, diy pedicure, toning my poor, bleached hair with purple stuff. I very rarely get a bath, so it was a luxury. Dh has taken the dcs out. Now some cleaning and then DH brought me a scone from Gail's this morning, so I'll have that once I've cleaned and tidied the living room as a reward!

Not sure what I'll have for lunch or dinner though. Haven't got that far yet... but need to make sure I have my meals as I am inclined to just snack over lunch, which then means I'm ravenous by dinner time, snack before dinner time, eat dinner, snack after dinner time...not a good idea.

OP posts:
LittleDoritt · 20/02/2021 16:31

Well done everyone for staying strong!

Your dinner sounds lovely Buzz.

I managed a 6 mile walk today, but I'm paying for it now - my feet and knees are killing. A hot bath for me tonight. Had the S day sugar with my breakfast but am not going to snack at all this weekend, as I really, really need to break that habit. So my day is looking like
B - pain au raisin
L Scrambled eggs and ham on two pieces of toast
D Pork curry and rice

Actually, just realised that apart from some onions, tomatoes and mushrooms in the curry there is no fruit and veg in my day, which isn't good, is it. Confused

MollyWindley · 20/02/2021 16:40

Hi @LittleDoritt - You could always shove a bit of fruit in with one of your meals, or just wait until tomorrow, I wouldn't worry about.

I'm ploughing on and haven't gone off diet yet...I had my S splurge/treat thing this afternoon, a crumpet with butter. I won't have one tomorrow as I'm counting Wednesday of next week as a splurge day as I'll be going out to get my Covid jab! So it's a good job I didn't celebrate Maundy Thursday as well !!!

buzzofthebumblebee · 20/02/2021 16:42

small steps LittleD . A big walk and no snacking are v big positives. Plus you forgot the raisins Wink. My lunch similar so I had a couple of raw carrots. More for the fibre as much as anything.

Lovely self-care henri. And much more beneficial than biscuits !! Your lentil lunch sounded yum by the way. I will try something similar next week.

I had major snack attack at 3.30 pm, but made do with a cuppa and tidying.

HenriettaHeffalump · 20/02/2021 17:20

I've just had breakfast, lunch and the aforementioned scone. Slightly weird and sweet meals though Confused, not sure why. So far, I've had:

B: small ready made pancakes and fruit
L: porridge with brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg
Snack: scone

Just been for a good march around town with the 3yo in the pushchair, so a bit of exercise. Will try and get on the spin bike later too, or possibly some yoga instead.

OP posts:
HenriettaHeffalump · 20/02/2021 17:24

That's a good walk LittleD! Yes, a hot bath cures all Smile. Molly is right; don't worry about a day with not much fruit and veg. You can tweak it as you go to make sure you're getting more with your meals.

buzz yy, was a great little diy spa session. Not the most luxurious of spa settings, surrounded by kids' bath toys, but hey ho!

Hope everyone has something nice planned for Saturday night!
