No S Diet - Anyone got quite a lot to lose and fancy trying a more longterm approach - no quick fixes!

HenriettaHeffalump · 03/02/2021 08:34

I have just discovered I've gone into the obese category. I am starting today doing something I have tried before and found great. I need something I can stick to longterm and which will improve my eating habits as well, so that when I do hopefully lose the weight, I can keep it off.

It is called the No S Diet.

Rules are:

No sweets
No snacks
No seconds

Except on days beginning with S! Sounds twee and gimmicky, but I swear it works if I stick to it.

Starting weight - 200 lbs
Height - 5'8"
BMI - 30.3 (obese category Blush)

I will also be taking up more exercise. Not going at it hell for leather like I always do, which never works as I can't do that anymore. So, slow and steady with exercise too.

Would love some slow and steady weight loss / healthy living buddies!

Oh the lunch till dinner struggle is real! I have just cooked a roast dinner for dcs and I did taste one thing (a teaspoon of gravy), but otherwise managed not to eat off their plates or pick at things while I was cooking. Now wondering how many portions I normally put away in just picking-while-I-cook food!

DH and I are going to make the remaining chicken into a curry later, and actually, I now feel fine. It's just getting over the 4 - 6.30ish hump for me, I think.

Did a quick weigh and I am 2 lbs down already! I know it's probably just water and it could all go on again, but I'm pleased with that for a start.

So now 198 lbs, bmi 30.1! Maybe I can get out of the obese category soon, which makes me very happy, as it has been relatively painless.

Can I jump on? Just into obese category and fed up of starting diets, having a lapse and then eating everything in sight. Plan for this week is to just stop snacking and then once that is in place look at my meals. 2lb already is inspiring @HenriettaHeffalump

HenriettaHeffalump · 06/02/2021 11:53

Of course @Newstartneeded21! Welcome Smile.

Thanks, I'm so pleased to be losing instead of gaining for once! But obviously won't get too carried away as it's early days. This does feel sustainable so far though. The prospect of days off around the corner really helps and three meals a day is no hardship.

Should also have mentioned btw, each meal should all go on one plate. It's meant to help you learn that eating means a plate in front of you. No plate = no eat, put down the fork / biscuit Henrietta!

I’ll join you although I’m already a month in if that’s ok! Our stats are quite similar.

I’m 5’7 - I started at 86.4kg (190lb) and have lost nearly 6kg and am now 80.5kg (177lb)

I’ve done this by walking - I was pretty much housebound from June to December last year with sciatica from a slipped disc and had surgery in December and I’m doing lots of walking as part of my recovery and loving it as I so missed being able to walk!

Also trying not to snack and if I do make sure it’s something healthy. Basically just cut out junk, processed food, sugary things etc.

I’m logging all my food on Fitbit as this helps me stay accountable I think. I’m aiming for 1200 calories which feels good for me, once I got past the first week I wasn’t feeling hungry at any point really but not stressing if I go over this amount as I’m trying to make it a lifestyle change.

Good luck. If I can get this far and stick with it you definitely can. I know I still have a long way to go but I am feeling positive and motivated to stick with it. I was almost obese 29.8 but now I’m 27.8 so it’s going in the right direction. I’m hoping to get back to 63kg which was what I was when I got married 5 years ago.

HenriettaHeffalump · 06/02/2021 12:22

Welcome @NoJetter! That's great how you are doing so far!! What good progress and yes, I can imagine being housebound would make you really appreciate walking.

I won't go down the calorie counting road as it sends me a bit weird!

I have just done half an hour on my spin bike. Not especially hammering it, but fast enough to break a sweat.

OP posts:
NoJetter · 06/02/2021 12:41

Yes can definitely see why a lot of people don’t like to count calories. I think I need to for portion control and to keep me accountable and it’s working for me right now.

That’s great you’ve got a spinning bike I think it’s great exercise. I have one too and do 15 mins of gentle cycling per day. Not enough to feel like it gets my heart rate up but I’m still being careful with my back so I’m sure I’ll work up to more in time.

HenriettaHeffalump · 06/02/2021 12:45

I think you do need to watch your back on bikes (watch your back ha! Sounds menacing). I did quite a hard spin class (online obviously) last week and I woke up with pain in my shoulders and hips! Think gently does it from now on for me, until I've built up my fitness. It's quite a new spin bike and I think I got ahead of myself a bit there!

Morning all! How is everyone?

I'm just having breakfast, as had to supervise homeschool and didn't have time earlier. I'm off to the shops in a bit, and have planned good, healthy meals, which I am really enjoying as I don't feel as if I'm planning special diet meals, just nice healthy ones.

Obviously so far so good today. Hope the weekend didn't do too much damage, but I wasn't awful.

Toorapid · 08/02/2021 10:42

Hi, I'm just going to jump in and say I stopped snacking after Boxing Day. I also did dry January. The two things together have led to a weight loss of 9lbs in that time and I was already well within the healthy weight margins.

Once I made the switch in my mind, that you only eat at mealtimes, it's been easy to stick to and whilst I haven't been completely sugar free, most of the sugary food I was eating was in the form of snacks, so a lot of it has gone.

Anyway, just wanted to say it really works and good luck.

HenriettaHeffalump · 08/02/2021 10:50

Ah thanks @Toorapid! I am thinking of doing a dry spell. I did two months last year. Didn't lose weight but I was probably overeating. Maybe the two things together as worked for you is the key!

Good evening. First day of this diet, no snacks and no seconds. I ate dinner at about 5 so am feeling hungry now. Might just have to have an early night... I did have sugar at lunch.

Bramblecrumble · 08/02/2021 20:21

In the form of chocolate as well as two pieces of fruit. I know fruits allowed but I do have a sweet tooth

HenriettaHeffalump · 08/02/2021 20:38

Ah fair enough @Bramblecrumble. I am doing fine, but my meals weren't the smallest or healthiest today! Just a lack of planning really, so I didn't get out to the shops when I should have today.

OP posts:
HenriettaHeffalump · 08/02/2021 20:52

I did get to the shops in the end and have some healthier things planned for the rest of the week.

DH and I were just saying how we seem go get through so much food at the moment! DH normally only has dinner at home and DC1 usually has breakfast and dinner, so we keep buying too little and run out.

OP posts:
HenriettaHeffalump · 09/02/2021 10:24

Morning!

Another late breakfast here. A bit healthier too. I think I'm likely to not have enough fruit & veg with this, if I'm not careful! So I'm having a plate of fruit with yoghurt, nuts and a slice of cheese.

I am finding I am putting more thought into what I eat, since I can't make up for it with snacks! Think it's a good thing.

OP posts:
HenriettaHeffalump · 09/02/2021 19:51

So, all more or less to plan today.

I had a healthy breakfast and then I think I possibly didn't eat enough at lunchtime... dinner ended up being a good while after lunch and dcs and I had been for a walk in the snow, so I was ravenous by dinner time. Plated up too small a portion and ended up getting a little bit more, so broke the No Seconds rule! Lesson learnt. Will have something more filling tomorrow lunchtime.

OP posts:
Bramblecrumble · 09/02/2021 20:20

Sounds good Henrietta. I reckon if you plated up too small first time it doesn't count of seconds

HenriettaHeffalump · 09/02/2021 20:28

Thanks bramble! Do you know what it was and it was so stupid? DH was standing beside me when I plated up and I didn't want to look like a total pig, so I plated up way less than I really needed. Stupid of me

OP posts:
Bramblecrumble · 09/02/2021 20:41

Haha, how long have you been doing the diet? I've avoided snacking again today but had a small gingerbread biscuit after dinner...So my meals were
Breakfast- Wheatabix and shredded wheat with almond milk
Lunch-vegetable pasta pesto from.an ice-cream tub not a plate so portion control maybe not great..?
Dinner: 2 pieces of pizza and salad with no dressing, one gingerbread biscuit.

Bramblecrumble · 09/02/2021 20:41

*3 peices of pizza

Newstartneeded21 · 09/02/2021 21:03

No snacking going well even if meals aren’t great but small steps 😀

HenriettaHeffalump · 09/02/2021 21:13

Today was:

B: nuts, fruit, yoghurt and cheese
L: tuna sandwich, handful of crisps and an orange (not enough)!
D: gammon, jacket potato and green beans

I have been doing it since last Wednesday I think, with the weekend off.

@Newstartneeded21, the book does say that in the beginning your meals might not be perfect and that it doesn't matter too much as long as you're getting into the habit of eating three plates a day and theoretically no more! The theory is, I think, that you get into the habit to begin with. Eventually, you will look at your plate and, if it isn't healthy, you will be too aware of that to not do anything about it, because it's right there in front of you. Whereas, if you're snacking, the evidence isn't really there on a plate. That resonated with me, as I am a mindless grabber of food.

Bramblecrumble · 12/02/2021 06:56

First weigh in for Friday
65kg - no change
88cm waist (+1cm but understand it could be bloating/later in my cycle etc)

I've been doing more less s rather than no s so I'll enjoy the weekend and next week I'll try again. I am actually feeling a bit better allready though.

Side note. Looking forward to special day pancake Day

HenriettaHeffalump · 12/02/2021 08:57

Weighing in!

Still 198 lbs, so no change from last Thursday? Whatever day it was. But, 2 lbs down overall, which is good for me.
