I have just discovered I've gone into the obese category. I am starting today doing something I have tried before and found great. I need something I can stick to longterm and which will improve my eating habits as well, so that when I do hopefully lose the weight, I can keep it off.

It is called the No S Diet.

Rules are:

No sweets
No snacks
No seconds

Except on days beginning with S! Sounds twee and gimmicky, but I swear it works if I stick to it.

Starting weight - 200 lbs
Height - 5'8"
BMI - 30.3 (obese category Blush)

I will also be taking up more exercise. Not going at it hell for leather like I always do, which never works as I can't do that anymore. So, slow and steady with exercise too.

Would love some slow and steady weight loss / healthy living buddies!

I had that EXACT problem last week @MollyWindley! Went for a big walk and I hadn't had a big lunch. I then caved the following day Blush, so don't do that, if you can help it. Make sure you have a good meal to make up for it and plan good meals for tomorrow too if you can, would be my advice.

Well I managed to finish my marking and by 5pm. Also managed not to snack! Thank you all, checking in with random strangers on the internet has helped me keep my resolve! Off to make dinner!

HenriettaHeffalump · 18/02/2021 17:19

Oh well done elt! It really helps having people to check in with and also as a bit of a sounding board, as I do think so much of it is in my head! Just typing it out helps me sort through it all.

Well done @eltsihT and thank you @HenriettaHeffalump, you gave me almost instant help there, I don't think that even my sister's daily personal trainer gives that level of support!!

Newstartneeded21 · 18/02/2021 20:15

Well done @eltsihT. I’m hiding from the snacks upstairs and have cleaned my teeth so hoping that will stop me succumbing 😃

Bramblecrumble · 18/02/2021 20:22

Hi, I've done okay no snacks and seconds but off work which is relatively active and have been very sedentary this week. I really should have done as I've just been at home. I do need to do some specific excersize. It's been a bit wet to do much walking here.

Bramblecrumble · 18/02/2021 20:23

No sweets also fine. I have eated a few artificially sweetened foods and drink which I know is against the spirit but also next to no calories.

Ah not at all! It was the voice of very recent experience!

I know bramble, I find outdoor exercise a lot less appealing at the moment! Roll on spring!

Yes, I've made it to almost bedtime! Only thing which was slightly off was I realised at dinner time that I'd only had two portions of fruit & veg today, plus one I was eating with dinner, so I had an orange and a banana immediately after dinner.

Meals today have been:

B: scrambled eggs on brown toast
L: prawn and avocado salad, brown bread
D: salmon fillet, mashed potato (I did actually measure this portion because it was frozen mash from waitrose 😂. Turns out a portion of mash is quite small) and asparagus followed by an orange and a banana.

Weigh in day tomorrow. I'm not expecting anything, as I had Tuesday as an S Day and also feeling hormone related bloating at the moment. I'd be happy to stay the same! I'm in it for the good habits, not the quick fix, as I keep saying!

Hello all, would it be ok if I joined? I got the shielding letter of doom today, because my BMI is over 40 Sad I would really like this to finally be the kick up the bum that I need to shift some weight.

Starting weight 217.5lbs
BMI 40.9

I've had a good day - vegetable soup with a ham roll for lunch, and sausages and mash with lots of veg for dinner, but I am a bit starving now! Not that I probably need any more calories, but the snacking habit is strong.
I haven't read the book but have had a read of the thread, and will try to learn as I go.

LittleDoritt · 18/02/2021 22:03

Forgot to say, I've also been walking an hour a day (five days in a row so far) Grin and have given up chocolate for Lent, so although there is no quick fix and I am hoping I can get a few pounds gone before Easter.

HenriettaHeffalump · 18/02/2021 22:12

Welcome @LittleDoritt Smile! Sorry about the news that you have to shield! That must be a worry.

Yes, it really is the habit I think, rather than needing more calories. However, I also think all those little bits and pieces I nibble at throughout the day, plus the wine and snacks on the sofa all evening too, do add up to loads of calories over time. So, by just cutting those things out, over time, the weight will come off.

I'm really trying not to fixate on the scales, in the short term, but yes, the end result I am hoping for is that I will get my weight down. And it really did work before, and does for many other people too! If you need inspiration, there is a No S Diet website which I think another poster linked to at the beginning, and a forum on there. Also, if you Google No S Diet, before and after pictures, you will see people who have managed to lose a lot of weight doing it.

Morning everyone!

Weighing in this morning. By the way, the weigh in is not compulsory! Anyone who would rather not weigh themselves or would rather not share their weight, that's obviously fine. I like it because I will forget what i weighed last time if i don't long it somewhere!

Anyway, another stay the same for me, at 198 lbs. But, as I said, I'm happy enough with this as it's the first day of my period today and also had my S Day. I'm not changing anything, as I've already added in exercise. Plan is just to stick to it next week, as I have no planned S Days. Also no bingeing over the weekend.

OP posts:
eltsihT · 19/02/2021 08:43

71.7kg this morning, this is my start weight. I would love to get to 62kg but a more realistic goal is 65kg, as it’s easier to maintain.

I have in my head Sometimes on the S days. But am looking forward to baking and having a wee cake with DC.

HenriettaHeffalump · 19/02/2021 08:59

Yes, exactly, having a treat or a dessert or whatever two days a week, I think is more sustainable. You may get someone who can be very, very strict for a short time and then slowly adjust to traditional No S, with treats on S Days, but in my personal experience with diets, the harder I restrict, the more likely i am to push the fuck it button and go bananas on All The Food. So the adjustment part never happens. Just out and out restriction until I can't stand it and then massive binge. And that may go on for longer than 2 days or it will be such a lot on one day, that it makes a treat or two on two days of the week look like childsplay Grin.

For me, the S Days are vital and they are an important part of the whole concept.

OP posts:
HenriettaHeffalump · 19/02/2021 09:01

That said, it is meant to be "sometimes", as in, yes you can have it, but if you don't feel like it, don't do it! And you might find you don't feel like having anything other than your meals after you're in that habit.

Morning, my scales aren't as precise as elih, only whole kg and I've gone from 65 for first two weeks to 64 this morning. I'm also doing waist measurement which is 87cm, the same as week one.

buzzofthebumblebee · 19/02/2021 10:07

SW = 13 st 2
CW = 12 st 12 (81.6 kg, 180 lbs)
GW 1 = 11 st 11 (74.8 kg, 165 lbs)
GW 2 = 10 st 10 (68 kg, 150 lbs)

So I've lost 4lbs already this week. This is normal for me week 1. (I had seriously over-eaten last weekend so loss not "proper" fat loss.)

I confess I did have to eat yesterday afternoon. I felt very wobbly, and realised it was probably due to having done a run, and not having any protein at lunch, just veg soup & toast. So I had 2 mini babybel cheeses justified to myself as delayed lunch protein, rather than a snack. So all well Wink

HenriettaHeffalump · 19/02/2021 10:24

Oh that's amazing you two!! So pleased people are seeing losses! Keeps me going Smile.

Well done everyone! Such motivating posts are lovely. I had a good day yesterday, the no snacking is so simple it really helps me not having lots of rules to follow. I’m trying to reduce carbs too just because actually they don’t make me feel good, but not cutting them out because as you have all said that way bingeing lies! Managed over 15000 steps yesterday which I’m really pleased and generally I’m feeling less sluggish that I was this time last week which I’m taking as a win. Well done on staying the same in spite of pancakes and hormones @HenriettaHeffalump, I’m weighing in on Monday in the hope that it means I am restrained over the weekend!

I automatically picked up some leftover toast this morning and was about to put it in my mouth but stopped and thought ‘do I actually want this? Will j feel better for eating it?’ And realised no so put it in the bin despite the waste! This is big progress for me as I’m usually a leftovers hooverer!

HenriettaHeffalump · 19/02/2021 10:36

Thanks Why! I know why I stayed the same and I will take it gratefully! Really reassuring to see other people losing though. Much as I do not want to get too hung up on the number on the scales.

Just having a large smoothie bowl! Conscious of getting enough fruit and veg. So it's loads of kale, some fruit, yoghurt and oats. Nice but freezing cold as the fruit and veg came out of the freezer!

I have both dcs with me today, and a jobs list the length of my arm, so I don't think much exercise will happen, other than maybe a walk. I should get on the spin bike this evening shouldn't I? I keep going to bed about the same time as dd though, which is the problem 😂. Although maybe I'll have a later night tonight as it's not a school night.

Good luck today all!

Stick with it Henri & you'll hopefully have the woosh you deserve next week. You are very motivating the fact that you are so positive & sensible, despite having not lost. To have not gained with TOTM bloat is a huge achievement. Your smoothie sounds delicious. I prefer to eat than drink my calories Wink

Well resisted why. Like the fact you measure too bramble. I might copy you on that one ... & hello Little. I've upped my water intake - so extra steps with my numerous trips to the loo!

HenriettaHeffalump · 19/02/2021 11:32

Thanks buzz! It's a marathon, not a sprint and all that.

I get really impatient usually when I'm dieting, because honestly, I'm thinking, "this is horrible.
When can I stop doing this"? But clearly, that's the wrong attitude as, even if I lost a tonne of weight I dunno, on Slimfast or something and the whole time was thinking, "a stone off and I can stop this and just eat healthily", I'd probably stick to it for a bit, get too hungry and also wouldn't have taught myself how to behave around food and I'd quickly regain it all.

With No S, the idea is you have to keep at it for a long time and it's ok, because it isn't a massive hardship. And you get a reprieve when you don't have to think about it, on S Days. And your habits do change after a while and mindless eating doesn't occur to you. And it's a normal way of eating, so you can stick with it forever really, if you want to.

Well done everyone, I have very fancy scales - here is my weight graph. Looks like I actually started no s’ing in 2015, I had a goal of 60kg then. I changed job in summer 2017 and you can see I was stress eating and not sticking to the very simple rules.

This time is a forever change!
