Anyone starting tomorrow and not planning a ''quick fix''

Hello!

I have gained a shocking amount of weight and absolutely need to regain control of myself.

I do not need another drop-some-lbs-quickly-to-look-lovely-in-my-new-frock-diet. I think it is more serious than that for me now and I need to completely transform my relationship with food, as it has obviously become unhealthy.

I have come crawling back to dieting, (and to MN), to hopefully find some weight loss buddies.

I am planning to do the "No S Diet". The rules are:

  1. No sweet treats
  2. No second helpings
  3. No snacking between meals

Except on "S" days; Saturdays, Sundays and Special Days, (birthdays, Christmas etc).

On "S" days, the theory is that you stick to your three, square meals and also have a special treat or two over the weekend. It isn't that you can then eat a whole tub of ice cream every weekend or anything.

It is meant to be a lifelong plan, (aren't they all?), not a quick fix. So I am not expecting rapid weight loss. I honestly just need to stop gaining at such an alarming rate. Even if I stay as fat as I am, (and I am quite fat), I could live with it, but the rapid weight gain has scared me tbh! I have gained approximately two stone in less than a year SadBlushConfused. Two years ago, I had a normal BMI and I'd just had a baby. Now, I am on the cusp of obese.

I am circa 14 stone, (a few lbs under), and need to be circa 11 and a half stone. At this point, I'd settle for anything under 13! I am 36.

Would love some company Smile.

I’m in. I’m 37 and weight 14 stone exactly. I want to be around 10 so I have a long way to go.

LadyPrigsbottom · 18/06/2020 19:47

Hi lockdown!

Great to have some company! We are very similar weights and ages then. 10 stone would be amazing for me too, eventually.

@LadyPrigsbottom I had an awful night sleep with the baby and in a night bad mood this morning but I’m determined to be on plan. I always tend to think oh well I deserve it but I deserve to be a stone and a few more lighter. How are you this morning?

We can do this 💪

pastabest · 19/06/2020 08:41

I've been doing something similar for a few months already (lapsed a bit the last couple of weeks due to stress). But I've lost a stone and a half overall since February.

I would also add that another S 'sleep' is very important to weight loss too. Tiredness makes you crave sugar and carbs.

I'm aiming to lose another half stone by September which will drop me below 11 stone and I will be happy with that.

Lockdownseperation · 19/06/2020 08:50

Oh goodness. Sleep is not a good area for me. I’m seriously sleep deprived, I’m going to try a few early night but there is not much I can do about DD2 except wait until she doesn’t need night feeds.

LadyPrigsbottom · 19/06/2020 09:36

Morning @lockdownseparation! Argh, bless you! How old is your baby, if you don't mind me asking? We are past the sleepless nights now, but I remember them all too well!

I still haven't had breakfast as it feels like an enormous decision today iyswim? I am clearly a bit food obsessed Blush. I swear I wasn't like this before.

Full disclosure btw, in case it looked as if I was taking credit; this diet isn't my own invention. There is a website and a book etc. I have just got the kindle version of the book, (quite pricey - will report back if I think it's worth it)!

Thank you @pastabest. That is good advice. I need to start having earlier nights... By the time we get dcs in bed I just want to collapse on the sofa and watch old Downton Abbey eps! Which would be fine, if I just watched one and went to bed, but I end up binge watching and end up staying up till about midnight, which is foolish. I should probably give myself a set bedtime and stick to it.

I am in a similar situation, I put a couple of stone on gradually across the last two years. I previously lost weight on the 5:2 diet, but it always crept back on and felt unsustainable for the long term.

I also wanted to make a proper change and stop the yoyo diets which must be wrecking my metabolism. I signed up to the Joe Wicks 90 day plan and have just finished the first month. It combines exercise, with making better food choices and is not about going hungry. It is a more slow, sustained approach but I think it is a proper lifestyle change (rather than a quick fix). We are encouraged to stop focusing on the scales, stay active and eat well. I have lost about 4 kg so far, but weight loss alone is no longer my only aim. I want to feel strong, healthy and better about myself. Good luck!

StealthNinjaMum · 19/06/2020 10:54

Can I join? I have put on so much weight in lockdown and I’m missing the gym and can’t motivate myself to exercise or workout at home.

I’m probably a size 12 (my clothes are all too tight) which doesn’t sound enormous but I am short with a small frame so I look six month pregnant. About ten years ago - with the help of another Mumsnet weight loss thread - I lost 5 stone by sticking to 1200 calories a day. I am intending to do a similar thing but also eating more veggie or vegan alternatives.

LadyPrigsbottom · 19/06/2020 11:43

Thank you @bashstreetkids and huge well done on the weight loss! I would love to lose about 3 kilos / half a stone over the next month or so. It should be achievable if I just get on with it.

I also did 5:2 and did quite well with it, but, like you, found it difficult to sustain for long. I needed days when I was really occupied with other stuff to fast successfully. At the moment, those days don't seem to come once a MONTH, let along twice a week!

So far, so good today, but obviously very early days. Either it was very stupid or total genius to start a diet which allows time off at weekends on a Friday 😁. Time will tell.

Welcome aboard @StealthNinjaMum!

All are v welcome. All approaches welcome too, if you're looking for a longterm change, rather than quick fix. I think that will obviously vary a lot depending on what works for everyone. Finding something I can stick to forever is my Holy Grail! Really hoping this is it and it really does make sense to me so 🤞.

I've just started doing this too.

During lockdown I did 16:8, and have managed not to put any weight on, despite eating anything I fancied in those 8 hours. It was easy to do because I wasn't having to get up at 6.15 to start a commute. When I'm going in to work, I'm so hungry by 10 if I haven't had breakfast that I just eat anything I can get my hands on.

But, that was essentially 90 missed meals, and all I did was maintain my weight. I know it's better than putting any on - and to not get any fatter was my aim - but still.

I have tried Slimming World, Weight Watchers, Joe Wicks and the Blood Sugar Diet before, all of which work - but then don't work. I've now started working my way through the intuitive eating 10 point plan using a book by Laura Thomas and a workbook by Evelyn Tribole. Both are longer term ideas for healthy relationships with food, not necessarily about losing weight.

BUT I need to lose weight, I'm unhealthily fat. I'm also menopausal and having a bit of a nightmare with that.

I read about NoS a couple of years ago, and ended up just cutting out all sugar for 100 days (in a competition with my partner!). It's the way forward for me. I'm happy to lose it slowly - I think it works well as a start with intuitive eating as it's not all that restrictive.

So, I'm in.

I'm not going to be posting a lot, but I'll weigh myself once a fortnight and just see how it goes.

ohthegoats · 19/06/2020 12:37

(Oh but I don't actually do S days - Friday night is my 'vice night' and I don't want that to change, so I do 48 hours from Friday evening. No snacking or treating after lunch on Sunday).

LadyPrigsbottom · 19/06/2020 13:11

Welcome @ohthegoats!

I have read some books on Intuitive Eating too, in my neverending search for Something I Can Stick To Grin.

I sort of think No S is a bit of a halfway house between IE and dieting iyswim? I know IE pros would probably say there is no such thing as a halfway house, so it is cheating a bit...

I think there is definitely something in the whole eating-one-plate-so-you-can-actually-see-and-appreciate-what-you're-eating, thing though, which I think would help me eat more 'intuitively'. That's the plan anyway.

Hi everyone!
Ive been intermittent fasting for about 4 weeks now. At the beginning of lockdown i pretty much ate what and when i wanted and didnt really go out to exercise so the weight piled on!
I started doing 16:8 which then changed to 18:6. I defo feel alot better eating this way and feel like its more sustainable than a "typical diet".
I wouldnt say i am fat, but i am short (5ft0) so the added pounds make me look quite round and is noticeable on my frame!

The No S Diet sounds like pretty much what i do, except for the snacking. Though i snack on cucumber, carrot sticks ect so at least its healthyish i guess! Hmm

Gerturdeandherroses · 19/06/2020 14:04

Hello - I'd love to join!

I'm also after a complete transformation in my relationship to food too, rather than a diet per se or quick fix- I've just posted another thread as I'm using Paul McKenna (book and app). It's a version of intuitive eating basically with added hypnosis, and I've found it pretty revolutionary so far...

I'm looking to lose a couple of stone I think - have already gone down a dress size in a few weeks with the Paul McKenna approach - would never have been my thing before but have been pleasantly surprised :)

LadyPrigsbottom · 19/06/2020 14:45

Welcome @Sissy31 and @Gerturdeandherroses Smile! So lovely to have some company. I definitely need some back up / accountability.

StealthNinjaMum · 19/06/2020 15:35

Thank you for the welcome @ladyprigsbottom.

My day has already started badly. I ate dd's croissant (due to be tomorrow' breakfast) just because it was in front of me!. So I have an upset child and the guilt of lasting ten minutes on a diet! I was very disciplined before lockdown but have started scofing leftovers off the dc's plates.

On a more positive note I've got a load of clothes in a John Lewis shopping basket that are size 10. I will diet into them and look fabulous. They're all in the sale. Eventually i'd like to be a size 8 but I'm also heading towards the menopause so that might be ambitious.

LadyPrigsbottom · 19/06/2020 15:39

Oh yes! I have been really enjoying looking at clothes recently. Hopefully I can replace my food obsession with a choosing nice clothes so I look half decent obsession.

Lockdown is a bugger for dieting. Obviously this is, in the scheme of things, absolutely nothing to complain about. But still. I need a kick up the ever expanding arse.

It’s great to have lots of people joining us. I will reply probably for tomorrow but I’m sleep deprived and had a shitty day and I need someone to hold me to account so I don’t have a huge slab of jam and bread.

LadyPrigsbottom · 19/06/2020 19:18

Oh no! So sorry to hear that @Lockdownseperation Flowers. Sleep deprivation is horrendous. Hope you get some sleep tonight.

OP posts:
Lockdownseperation · 19/06/2020 19:31

Thanks @LadyPrigsbottom. I’m hoping the 11 month old isn’t bothered by her teeth. Life is tricky for us as a family at the moment.

Onthebrink67 · 19/06/2020 21:13

Can I join too please. Starting tomorrow as I’m finding while I’m WFH I can’t stop snacking. Got 3 stone to lose but every time I start a diet I end up blowing it and eating far more than normal. I’m hoping gradual reductions won’t trigger this panic response.

butidoloveyou · 19/06/2020 21:19

I'd love to join too if that's ok? I've been trying (unsuccessfully) to lose my baby weight from DD2 for a while now. I was doing alright before lockdown but I've just used it as an excuse to eat! Currently 13st8 and would love to get to 11stone or less but definitely think I need a new approach!

radioband · 19/06/2020 21:23

Oh can I join! I'm roughly 14.10. My ideal weight is 12.6 but I want to be less than that. I got to my target weight but through doing shakes, needless to say I put it all back on. I really want to change my lifestyle and relationship with food. I'm an emotional eater and it's a vicious circle.

radioband · 19/06/2020 21:25

I'd highly recommend Pinch of Nom recipes.
