I’ve been living off Brie and chocolate since December began and I’ve put weight on. Currently 9st4lbs and I want to be 8st10lbs.
Anyone with me!?

Going to try calorie counting but open to suggestions. I currently eat far to much crap which is the root of the problem.

@Octopus37 3 pounds since 2nd Jan is good steady progress.

Octopus37 · 18/01/2020 18:57

Thanks Everycow, its only 2 at the moment, was nearly 3 but let myself off the leash on Wedmesday night and it hasn't gone down yet. Have eaten cals today, probably one of my better days. Not many steps but have been painting the kitchen. Will work out for my height and weight how many cals I need to lose, but tbh would it very hard to drop much more. Might be due for a period in a few days so that could be a factor. I guess as long as I'm on my way down it doesn't matter.

WellErrr · 18/01/2020 19:11

That added up to around 1200 before evening meal Octopus. So possibly 2000 by the end of the day? That might be why you’re not losing - try a week of being mega disciplined and sticking at 1200-1400. It’s so hard but I really believe that less calories in than out is the only way to lose (whichever diet you do to achieve it :)).

I hope my tone doesn’t come across patronising or anything, sorry if it does I don’t mean it!! But sometimes it’s easy to think you’ve had a good day, when actually the calories if you work them out add up to loads xx

Patchworksack · 18/01/2020 19:24

I read octopus's post that her lunch was 309 cals total, which is about 900 cals so far.
Enjoy your meal out everycow
Dh is aiding my weight loss today by making an evening meal that was inedible. I'm actually concerned he has had his tastebuds removed - last week he served up a chilli that would blow your head off, and this week gnocchi and green veg absolutely overpowered with mustard. It makes me really cross because I am so looking forward to my meals at the moment - and it's such a waste of food because I have literally thrown away 4 full plates of food.

Heygirlheyboy · 18/01/2020 19:26

I'm not sure what you started at octopus but I think a pound is a good guide for a sustained loss. I'm surprised too, but I figure better to get long term healthy habits.. I have to log my day now. Find that helps in terms of evening snacking.

WellErrr · 18/01/2020 19:29

Ah right ignore me then sorry 🙈

Patchwork that must be so frustrating!

I’ve decided I’m having 1800cals one day a week. And that day is today. I’m having my salted caramel pudding and I’m going to bloody enjoy it.

Found a Belgian chocolate bombe in the cupboard. Just had it with custard, which takes me up to 1910 calories today.

And I REALLY enjoyed it!!

Back to 1400 until next Saturday night (I hope!)

Nothing wrong with that Wellerr! Glad you enjoyed it.

Twixes · 18/01/2020 20:47

Definitely nothing wrong with the odd indulgence, dieting is so bloody boring!!!!

I was really feeling the dry January last night and I think it was boredom. I didn't cave so all's well. Some ice cream did sneak past my lips though!

I was only saying the other day I'm an all or nothing person but I'll have to eat my own words because I've slipped a bit the last few days. Nothing drastic but I don't think I'll be seeing another 1.2kg off on Monday. But on the plus side I'll have done 6 gym classes this week, that's bound to count for something! I reckon they add up to about 2000 calories so with even moderate calorie restriction I should see a loss.

On the slow progress @Octopus37 - 1lb a week is great, imagine weighing a stone less in three months?! Regardless of anyone's starting weight that's an amazing achievement! It's more or less my target anyway. If I got 1 stone off I'd fit into jeans I haven't fit into in 5 years!

DontFundHate · 18/01/2020 21:42

What will you do when you reach target @WellErrr (sorry if that's been asked already, I seem to remember the Q but not the answer!)

@Octopus37 that's great progress! About the same as me :)

I'm finding weekends very very hard, especially after being so good all week! Any tips?!

toasterstrudle · 18/01/2020 21:47

I hate dieting and also struggle, so normal! I've had days super on track and days a bit more relaxed but generally trying to be quite strict as I know calorie deficit is the only way to lose weight and 3500 deficit a week is a pound! Also dont worry about starvation mode, it's a bit of a myth unless you've literally no body fat, but do take care transitioning out - I'll aim to gradually reintroduce calories over several weeks to try and avoid piling it straight back on again!

Octopus37 · 18/01/2020 21:57

That's what I will try and keep in mind, a stone in three months would be great. Thanks very ,much for the encouragement.

WellErrr · 18/01/2020 22:09

What will you do when you reach target @WellErrr (sorry if that's been asked already, I seem to remember the Q but not the answer!)

My original target was 8st10lbs, but now that I’ve reached 8st11lbs I’m thinking I might aim for 8st7lbs, which has been my all time (but always thought totally u achievable..!) goal. So I’m going to keep going and see how close I can get!

So I hope no one minds me hanging around! It’s been really nice having the thread to chat about calories and diets, I always feel like I’m boring everyone in real life! So thanks gals xx

Is it really a myth!? I’m getting terrified about putting it all back on! I’ve never successfully dieted like this before! I’m feeling like I’ve put weight on already and I only had my chocolate bombe an hour ago 😂

You’ll get there!! 💪

@WellErrr that's amazing you're basically at your goal weight! Yep apparently it's a myth, been doing some reading on it - Chloe madeley, ESG Fitness, the fitness chef and James Smith pt Instagrams have all mentioned it recently! A apparently the key is to come out of diet slowly to find your true maintenance level.

Wineloffa · 18/01/2020 23:30

Well done WellErrrr!!! Fantastic work to hit your target already! Do you mind me asking what age you are? Mine seems to be coming off more slowly, despite sticking rigidly to my daily 1200 calories. I’m starting to suspect it’s my age or hormones working against me...

WellErrr · 19/01/2020 06:21

I’m 32...Mine came off really slowly, stayed static for ages then suddenly just dropped. I’m not sure why!
I’m sure if you carry on it’ll come off, keep the faith! I think I’ll really struggle to get down to 8st7lbs, might not happen but I’ll try!

OP posts:
joggingon · 19/01/2020 07:39

@wineloffa. If it helps I'm 45. If I went on a diet 10 years ago I would lose 3lbs a week blinking. Now I have to content myself with 1lb. Years ago I did WW. Now I eat much cleaner food and exercise regularly. Sooo frustrating but it is what it is. Also depends how close you are to goal.

Twixes · 19/01/2020 08:34

That's interesting about starvation mode being a myth, I've always felt it was so it's good to have my suspicions confirmed! About ten years ago I went on a really strict diet and lost about 1 stone, I was pretty much starving most of the time. Then I slowly stopped, it wasn't sustainable and I started eating normally again, albeit healthily.

I bobbed around that low weight for 5ish years but in the last five years I've eaten way more rubbish - crossaints, ice cream, chocolate, fizzy sweets, three meals a day, not holding back on desserts when eating out, almost zero activity and I've put back on that stone.

So no piling it all back on once things resumed to normal- it took 5 years - in which time I had two babies. That's prob relatively slow for putting on a stone I suppose! If messing with your metabolism was a thing mine should be fucked!

MyuMe · 19/01/2020 09:45

I totally fell off the wagon yesterday. 3 x alcoholic drinks followed by pasta.

Followed by chocolate when I got home. Being slightly drunk makes me pick.

I have a holiday in April I want to look good for. Back on it today I'll try.

Heygirlheyboy · 19/01/2020 10:27

Dontfundhate, would it help to think.of weekends as an opportunity to have really nice, healthy meals? Exactly octopus imagine yoursel a stone lighter. For me, I think to myself, it's either keep this up, where I'm feeling better in myself if not on the scales yet, or keep going as I was and keep going up on the scales while putting more and more trousers to the side.. no option really. I hope people don't mind me saying I think it really helps not to think of it as a diet and a.negative. We feel better eating well, generally look better, sleep better etc., this is actually the real treat for us, without sounding too evangelical lol! But I hope yswim. No temptation for me yet but am mindful of when I feel the little tug in the sugar direction. I read somewhere to think of that as a radio on in the background that will eventually tune out if you ignore the urge enough ie break the (lifelong for me) habit. I am also trying my very best to take it one day at a time so I don't get disheartened. Weetabix and coffee had, will check in later!

toasterstrudle · 19/01/2020 10:52

@Twixes that's great to hear your personal story too, gives me hope! Pre pregnancies I was usually around 9st 7 but I actually fancy getting to 9st to see if I look and feel better at that weight. I've lost a lot of muscle over the last few years and replaced it with body fat!

TheHoundsofLove · 19/01/2020 11:05

Hey I totally agree that we need to be aiming for permanent change of habit and viewing the process positively.
Octopus Even half a lb a week would see a stone off in 6 months. That's about the rate that I was losing weight last year (although it came of more in fits and starts) and it has been very sustainable.
I don't think that starvation mode exists either. I do, however, think that it is perfectly possible to damage your metabolism. Although, I don't think that going low calorie for long enough to lose a stone or 2 would do it. But, haven't they found signs of metabolic damage in people who have lost significant amounts of weight on very low calorie diets? I've definitely read of people who end up needing quite considerably less calories than someone of the same weight who has never dieted.

everycowandagain · 19/01/2020 11:32

I am definitely viewing this as a positive period of time where I am focused on myself, putting time and effort into being stronger, fitter and healthier. I refuse to hate myself into being thinner, it makes me so sad when we as women internalise messages that we are unacceptable because we don't look like someone from Love Island. So I don't allow myself to get into the diet mindset of denying myself or believing that I am sub-standard in some way. I am investing time and energy in myself because I am worth it!

Twixes · 19/01/2020 11:35

Y'know I probably didn't diet hard enough to damage my metabolism, I was never at 'eating disorder' restriction. I'm guessing those who may have damaged metabolisms battled with EDs for years

joggingon · 19/01/2020 11:42

I have my own little theory re damage. I think I've stretched my stomach through over eating. I am therefore hungry eating maintenance calories. Find it very easy to overeat when off plan. I have a lot of stretch marks indicating a lack of collagen. I think all of this is linked. 🤔. I therefore try to eat high volume low calorie food, high protein and accept that I have to restrict my eating for life. Anyone else feel like this?
