hi all
thought it was time we had a new thread

OP posts:
BecauseImWorthIt · 04/09/2007 08:24

Well in that case, can I just say that day 1 went well. Not enough water, but I was working and couldn't risk having to go to the loo all the time!

And a pound down this morning, so really feel I've got off to a good start.

oggsfrog · 04/09/2007 09:30

Doing well up to now on the food front, not so well on the water. Can't bear to weigh myself, but am in ketosis as of Sunday - yay.

Katisha · 04/09/2007 10:47

Scales going in right direction again. Trying to be really strict at mo for a couple of weeks.

mazzystar · 04/09/2007 13:35

seem to have dropped a couple of pounds after a weeks or so of no movement, quite pleased.

and someone - finally - said to me I looked well and had I lost weight so that was nice

question fvr everyone - how do you know when you are "in ketosis'?

cheers

OrmIrian · 04/09/2007 14:22

My appetite reduces, and I get a funny taste in your mouth. I can go without meals quite happily. It's sort of nice not to be controlled by food, but also sad because I don't enjoy it anymore.

oggsfrog · 04/09/2007 14:34

I use Ketostix. If they show too dark they also serve to remind me to keep up the fluid intake.

That reminds me, must go and drink some water

auntyspan · 04/09/2007 15:45

Well as a relatively new low-carber.... I lost 10lb on the induction. I had a hen weekend this weekend and drank quite a bit, so was testing a very pale lilac on the Ketostix strips last night. Therefore going to do a couple more days of induction before introducing a few more carbs.
Have a dress fitting on Saturday so want to feel slim and lovely!

I'm feeling better and fitter and definitely thinner - people are noticing which is fab. getting a bit sick of protein all the time but trying to stay focussed!

BecauseImWorthIt · 04/09/2007 17:17

what are you eating, Aunty Span? It doesn't have to be all protein!

OrmIrian · 04/09/2007 17:35

No that's true Because. You should be eating reasonable amts of green veg and salad aunty.

BecauseImWorthIt · 04/09/2007 21:49

Well day 2 not good. OK foodwise but not good on the alcohol front. I was supposed to be giving it up, but I had a lunch with 2 very old friends - and you can guess the rest.

And as I'd had a couple of glasses at lunchtime, it was impossible to refuse this evening.

Food was low carb - bacon and eggs this morning, lunch was prawns with salad starter, barramundi fillet with roasted veg for mains and dinner was steak with roasted veg and broccoli.

Just that pesky vat of wine ...

mazzystar · 04/09/2007 22:02

ok, please could someone giv eme a verdict on my menu for the day?

breakfast - egg en cocotte with 2 cherry tomatoes, bit of parmesan and a bit of chopped watercress
lunch - green bean, feta and pine-nut salad
supper - tuna with watercress, 1/2 avocado and 2 celery sticks
was starving today, for the first time since starting to eat this way - so snacked on almonds - about 15 in total, a tiny bit of parmesan, a couple of small chunks of chorizo and some raw cacao nibs

where would i come by ketostix?

BecauseImWorthIt · 04/09/2007 22:03

Food looks fine IMO - but if you're hungry you could probably do with eating more fat. More cheese, oil-based dressing on your salad, etc.

Ketostix from Boots (although I haven't bought any for a while)

BecauseImWorthIt · 04/09/2007 22:05

Mayonnaise with your food (just check the sugar levels), butter on your veg.

And drink lots of water as this does help to fill you up.

oggsfrog · 04/09/2007 22:54

The water isn't just for filling you up though - it's neccessary to flush the fat out.

You should be aiming for at least 2lt of water a day

BecauseImWorthIt · 05/09/2007 08:44

[gri n]

2lbs down this morning! Despite the vat of wine!

Scales now showing 9.12 (and did settle first on 9.11!)

I know this isn't going to continue, but it's psychologically a real boost to keep me going.

mazzystar · 05/09/2007 10:02

oh i'm guzzling the water, always do to be honest, so don't find that a problem

had spinch and egg "muffins" for breakfast and they seem a bit more substantial than yesterday's attempt

OrmIrian · 05/09/2007 11:00

Are you a vegetarian mazzystar? If not you might find that some meat and more fish might be helpful. You seem to be majoring on nuts, seeds and salad which is lovely but can add the carbs in if you aren't careful. (Not that I'm one to talk ..... which is exactly why I struggle to get below my comfort weight ). You are obviously doing well but if you are worried that you are stalling it might be an idea to go back to basics for a while.

It might also help with being so hungry too.

mazzystar · 05/09/2007 21:03

cheers for the tips - no not veggie , well not since february when i had a major craving for rare steak 3 days before dd was due. had been properly vegetarian since i was eleven! yesterday was a particularly veggie-ish day really, and could well be why i was so flipping hungy.

did better today - i think - spinach and egg "muffins" for breakfast - yummy; lots of prawns and small salad for lunch; chicken stirfry thing for supper.

Katisha · 07/09/2007 10:16

OK I am taking this really seriously at the moment and doing induction and not even having greek yoghurt and blueberries for breakfast - aaaargh!

The scales are going down - I shall soon be at the usual 12 st. Then we'll see!

Despite guzzling water I have had a headache for a few days now - don't usually get this when low carbing, although maybe I haven't done it seriously enough for a couple of years. Does anyone experience headaches on induction? How long do they go on for?

mazzystar · 07/09/2007 12:10

i had horrible headaches for about 4 or 5 days when i started. almost migraine-like. i put it down to changing blood sugar levels, and giving up caffeine - even though i only ever drink green tea anyway.

i haven't had any fruit since i first started this about 6 weeks ago, been having nuts and seeds and veg and salad. when is it ok to start having a bit of fruit and what sort is best?

am slathering at the mouth at the thought of blueberries and greek yoghurt.... weight loss is slowing though so am thinking maybe not yet.

newy · 07/09/2007 12:22

Apologies for the fact I haven't read all the thread so may repeat. I'm really quite depressed as DS is 5 months and keep meeting lots of mums whose babies are younger and they are thinner than me! All seem to be about a size 10. The Atkins really suited me but find it really hard in the morning. Tried to restart it this am but felt so neuseas (only had chorizo and emmamental in fridge) that had to have something else to stop me being sick. Unfortunately the 'something else' was a chocolate brownie.
Any other non-gag ideas for brekkie? Need to fit into my clothes...(shuffles of sobbing and wiping snot on sleeve)

Katisha · 07/09/2007 12:41

Well Newy my usual breakfast (when not doing induction) is defrosted frozen blueberries from tesco with big dollop of total full fat greek yog. It's luverley.

Also OrmIrian has a useful recipe for almond "scones" which again are not for induction but are great afterwards for a low carb breakfast with some cream cheese say. It goes 100g melted butter with one beaten egg and enough ground almond to make a stiff mixture (a big bag I usually find). Put big spoonfuls on a baking tray or in paper cases and bake in moderate oven for 15 mins or until brown. They go a bit soft after a day but are still a good thing.

FOr induction (which you probably just need to endure to get back in the swing) you have do do ham, eggs, smoked salmon and cream cheese if feeling rich, omelettes and all that really...

newy · 07/09/2007 12:55

thanks, katisha. dh said he will go shopping with me to get suitable grub.

superalienstitch · 08/09/2007 23:36

newy, if your baby is only five months old, then give yourself a break. it takes a year to get back to normal.
also, i fyour are breast feeding, then you really shouldnt do the induction part.
i was getting seriously stressed with atkins until i decided to eat fruit as well. wiehg tloss is slow, but steady. and as i am very close to my target weight, only seven more pounds to go, i have twice had to up my carb intake on purpose, to prevent my face going skeletal. i.e. not good to lose it too fast. a fab body witha skull for a face is not a look i want.i have all fruit. except banana's but thats olnly because i stopped buying them because the kids dont eat them, only me. and lots of bananas not a good idea.
crocthety well done on your wieght loss. keep it up.

BecauseImWorthIt · 09/09/2007 17:01

Katisha - hope your headaches have died down now!

So, week 1 over and not a bad week.

Have a difficult week next week as I'm off to Germany for a couple of days (work) so will not be in control totally of what I'm eating.
