I've discovered something and need some advice because of it....

I eat quite a low fat diet (generally) and everyone always is stumped as to why I'm not thin well since starting that food diary (thanks Forestfly it's fab) I've learnt (over yesterday and today) that my carb in take is quite high compared to the other stuff, which has set me wondering... I wonder if it would do me good to go on a low carb diet, I've heard of them but don't know one diet from the next really. Can anyone tell me a good low carb diet??? I think I might try it.

TIA

Furball · 21/09/2004 12:39

There's two main ones. Atkins, which is low carb and high fat - it sounds good, but you can have hardly any fruit or South Beach, which is low carb, low fat and loads of fruit and veg. Kateandthegirls is doing the SB. If you want a 'halfway house' then Slimming World 'red' days is quite a good option, then if you do crave carbs after a while you can switch to 'green' days, no problem.

Fizog · 21/09/2004 12:51

I eat loads of fruit so south beach might be good... does anyoen have an online copy of South Beach or SW Read days that you can post a URL to or email me???

Today 82% of my food intake has been carb!

Please can I join? I weigh 11st. and should be 9.5st. In December I am going to Australia for a holiday, Ive got lots of friends there who I havnt seen for 7 years. I cant bare the thought of turning up looking like a whale. Yesterday I was diagnosed as (possibly)having Coeliacs Disease (an allergy to Gluten). The only way they can find out is to put a telescope down your throat and all the way into your small intestine where they then cut out some of the intestine and do a biopsy! Yuk! Im booked in for this unpleasnat little experience in January. Any way I figured if I give up all Gluten for the next 2 months I can a)find out if my symptoms clear up and avoid having the test, and b) loose weight as there will be so few carbs in my diet. Am also giving up alcohol so watch this space! What do we do re: checking in each week, the thread is now so long Im confused.

LunarSea · 21/09/2004 14:03

Try here for general South Beach info. For a list of phase 1 (1st 2 weeks) foods, see here - it gets a lot easier after that as you can have lots of fruit on phase 2.

butwhatdoiknow · 21/09/2004 16:08

I joined you yesterday.

Today I have had:

one bowl of porridge with golden syrup and double cream - yummmmmmmmmmmmmm
3 chocolate digestives
one portion of fish and chips
one dime bar
one packet of mintolas
one packet of refreshers

do you think I'm on the right road?

JuniperDewdrop · 21/09/2004 16:13

I weigh 11 stone 9 lbs after stripping bare, cutting my toenails and shaving off all my body hair
Quite fancy being 10.5 stone as I'm 5' 8" so think that'll be ok.

I've been logging my food today and lack in most things at the mo, just have to have a nice healthy tea. Can't wait for my trampette to come as the only real exercise I get is walking a mile a day.

libb · 21/09/2004 16:41

I am not doing the South Beach diet but for those that are . . ..

healthy.allrecipes.com/directory/4400.asp

I haven't had much to eat at all today and have mowed the lawn - we are having roast dinner tonight but I shall fill mine with veggies.

FF, am intrigued by your motivation - is he dark? with a six pack?

KateandtheGirls · 21/09/2004 17:47

Thank you Libb.

willow2 · 23/09/2004 10:01

Have lost a couple of pounds. Just trying to eat really healthily - lots of whole foods and fruit.

MancMum · 23/09/2004 10:04

doing well so far... if you ignore 1/2 bottle of wine drank with Dad last night - it would have been rude to make him drink alone... still got till Tuesday to work it off.... swimming at lunch time...

libb · 23/09/2004 10:36

I bought some salad . . . can I use maternity leave and a bolshy demanding DS as an excuse?

Bless him, he tries to keep me on the straight and narrow by not letting me eat the simplest of things whilst demanding HIS bosooms all the time.

Dingle · 23/09/2004 11:02

I should be OK , haven't really had much time to eat!! I think that's half my problem, run around after kiddies, but never make time for myself. I have mamaged to have a HOT cup of tea this morning though. Dropped dd of at SN nursery this morning, popped into shop to buy soem fresh friut & veg, I am trying to eat healthier but don't really have any plan as such.
My main goal is to exercise more rather than lose a lot of weight, just thought it would be a sensible thing to start looking after myself as well as the rest of the family.
Have done that journal for a few day-OMG, didn't realise there were so many calories in a quiche!
Should I have given my weight & goals?
What's happening please?

Fizog · 23/09/2004 11:40

Went to the gym again this morning and switched to South Beach as of today, so far I've had a hard boiled egg and a boiled sweet... for lunch I have made poached salmon on Spinach and tomato

Weighed myself this morning and had PUT ON!!! 1lb, I'm putting that down to water retntion (or something!)

I will have lost at least 1 lb by Tuesday I promise!!

How many calories can you have in a day?

color · 23/09/2004 13:01

Ok I confess I am a compulsive overeater wishing to join in. Tried various slimming clubs and even a gym much to my massive embarrasment and failed everytime. MN has helped me in the past and I have tried to help other MN so maybe we can all do well here but how? You wont see me overeating and I wont see you either not that meeting up has ever helped me. Can we have a rhyme to say when tempted or something????!!!! I have kept trying to get in touch with "overeaters anonymous" or whatever they are called but not managed it and think it will be just more money down the drain. Today's fad about obesity fat nation etc are making me find it even harder to step outside the door. HELP. Sorry didn't mean to go on and on

Notadrop I have 4 stone to get rid of too and just realised, everytime I pick up my 8 year old I moan about how I can't hold him for long as he's too heavy, thinking now... I should pick him up every time I want to overeat to try and remember how much extra weight I am carrying all the time!!!!!!!! Trouble is he would be fast asleep in bed so can't do it when I overeat most. What a thought though, thanks for that notahope!
