Fruit & Veg record - anybody care to join?

Shoeshelpplease · 12/04/2018 16:39

I have recently read How Not to Die (well, on Audible actually) and its absolutely fascinating. All the different benefits different veg have and the different benefits each has depending on raw v cooked.

It advocates a plant based diet, but that wont happen for me. I am however committed to reducing meat and increasing the amount of veg (mainly) and fruit in my diet.

Would anybody be interest in joining in recording the different veg they have managed to achieve each day and in what ways? I'm talking pretty hard core here - aiming for 9 a day with a big variety.

I'd find it really interesting to see how others are achieving it.

Breakfast was oats, banana, blueberries (2)
Lunch was veg chilli (5)
And because I can't be arsed today I had it again for dinner but on mushrooms, kale and rocket (3)

I had a tonne of nuts and seeds and jam on toast in-between though. Can we count jam? No, suppose not.

Total 10

Shoeshelpplease · 28/04/2018 04:47

Elementtree, not sure about the jam. It is of course fruit, but with a tonne of sugar too. As an aside, one thing I am trying to do for the whole family is, if buying processed foods, to look for no more than five ingredients. Not always easy, and can be substantially more expensive which is also a deterrent to using none whole foods.

So I'm staying in a hotel which includes breakfast, buffet style! I've pre prepped a flax seed with strawberry muffin, so what to do?

Hmmmm I'm pondering. I hope I make the right choice!

No, don't be letting me get away with jam or I'll be back trying to convince everyone that chilli chocolate is a vegetable.

A hotel breakfast might be the end of me. I think fruit salad but magically end up at the pastry table. I'm liking vegetables now more than ever but the habit is not set with an iron will yet. A strawberry flaxseed muffin sounds delicious though, how did it go?

Elementtree · 28/04/2018 13:00

Don't be so hard on yourself wilderness. If you are poorly then I think you'll be better off resting than force feeding yourself. Hope you get well soon.

I have an operation to have my gallbladder out on Tuesday which will limit me to - oh I don't even know yet - broth and peppermint tea by the looks of things . I'll hang around but I don't think I'll be food logging till I'm up and running.

Highhorse1981 · 28/04/2018 13:31

About 18 portions??!

Dottydotts · 28/04/2018 13:53

Highhorse what's the other 20% if you don't mind me asking?

Dottydotts · 28/04/2018 14:05

Hello... joining in if that's ok. I try and eat loads of fruit and veg as the message if "5" falls so much short of the real total we should be having. I aim for variety over portion.
So yesterday
Small bowl of linseed, Brazil nuts and almonds with mango, raspberries and banana with honey and coconut milk

Lunch - toasted flatbread with tomato, pineapple, spring onion, red peppers, lettuce and avocado

Apple and cashew nut butter

Chicken in lemon and chilli maple sauce (I eat the whole lemon cooked) with roasted sweet potato, kale and apple sauce, carrots, leeks and peas

Pears and strawberries dipped in dark chocolate and left to cool

Lots of tea with dash of coconut milk

(One salted caramel donut my husband brought home for me 🍩 Grin)

Dottydotts · 28/04/2018 14:07

Shoes I've also been reading How not to die Smile

mikado1 · 28/04/2018 14:14

Had 5 full portions there for lunch- delicious and feel great!

Broccoli, feta, cherry tomatoes and hazelnut salad with spinach leaves, beetroot and chickpeas.
Plus 2 fruits this morning, 7 and counting :)

Highhorse1981 · 28/04/2018 17:34

Tuna
Chicken
Porridge
Prawns
Small amount of dried fruit
Greek yoghurt

Highhorse1981 · 28/04/2018 17:40

An occasionally some pasta

Wildernesstips · 28/04/2018 17:57

Feeling much better today, thank goodness.

Breakfast: Toast and a banana (1)
Lunch: poached egg on toast with mushrooms, Apple (2)
Dinner: Stir fry - pepper, cabbage, onion, water chestnuts, bean sprouts and quorn (5)

So 8 in all. Unfortunately, I have now discovered I have an allergy to bananas.

Do any of you ever read the Healthy Food Magazine? I can get digital copies free from my library.

Dottydotts · 28/04/2018 18:03

Thanks Highhorse.

mikado1 · 28/04/2018 18:23

I have attached some good veg only recipes from the Irish Times today- will post link but so far can't find it. I was out for pizza but had spinach, onion, red pepper and mushroom on! Will have some fruit before bed. Say 12 though I know veg pizza pushing it.

mikado1 · 28/04/2018 18:28

Why won't my pics attach??

lurkingfromhome · 28/04/2018 18:40

Yesterday:

B: Greek yoghurt, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries (3)
L: salad with lettuce, tomato, yellow pepper, beetroot, avocado, cucumber (6)
D: out for curry so quite poor - no real veg content to speak of so we’ll say (1) for the tomatoes in the sauce. 10 in total.

Need to do a huge food shop tomorrow so will stock up for the week.

wilderness I get free magazines from my library so will have a look for that. Do you recommend it?

Wildernesstips · 28/04/2018 19:06

@Lurking I also download Delicious but prefer the health aspect to the Healthy Food mag.
