Fruit & Veg record - anybody care to join?

I have recently read How Not to Die (well, on Audible actually) and its absolutely fascinating. All the different benefits different veg have and the different benefits each has depending on raw v cooked.

It advocates a plant based diet, but that wont happen for me. I am however committed to reducing meat and increasing the amount of veg (mainly) and fruit in my diet.

Would anybody be interest in joining in recording the different veg they have managed to achieve each day and in what ways? I'm talking pretty hard core here - aiming for 9 a day with a big variety.

I'd find it really interesting to see how others are achieving it.

I haven't got to the dozen but yet elementree but maybe I should skip on!

Mina I have tried paleo but couldn't stick to it but and got a rash although I did get compliments on looking well when I tried it. Paleo has lots of different interpretations and variations. At its most basic it is seasonal fruit and veg, small amounts of pure honey and maple syrup, nuts and pretty much unlimited meat and fish but wild meat and offal (nose to tail) is included (venison, livers etc). No dairy or grains.

It is possibly flawed because hunter gatherers wouldn't be able to eat the way we eat now with supermarkets and a constant supply of food, they probably would have eaten bugs and any edible roots etc. It is also way more expensive than a vegan diet as ideally you would eat organic grass fed meat not bog standard factory farm meat. There is also a theory that we have adapted to our current diets more quickly than the paleo stand point would suggest.

Elementtree · 15/05/2018 10:33

I wouldn't blame you for skipping yum! I only listened on audible and it felt like it would never end. By the end of the book I felt like years had gone by.

This is Greger on the paleo diet:
nutritionfacts.org/video/the-problem-with-the-paleo-diet-argument/

And that site it brilliant, especially when
you can't remember bits of the book, it had tonnes of information, including stuff on diabetes and plant based diets.

yumyumpoppycat · 15/05/2018 22:36

brilliant thanks Elementtree! I have downloaded the app too that looks handy.

Highhorse1981 · 16/05/2018 06:05

No new meals here so not been playing. Essentially same old same old.

Porridge, tomatoes, protein and huge salad, Greek yoghurt and berries, apples, loads of steamed veg, more Greek yoghurt and berries (and invariably finishing the day off with some jelly)

One thing I have started to enjoy is sauerkraut and also kimchi with my steamed veg. Fermented veg, meant to be amazing probiotics. Aside from the health benefits, very tasty and count towards your veg.

Highhorse1981 · 16/05/2018 06:06

Playing should read posting

Hope you all enjoying the weather. Perfect weather for lots of fresh salads and veg!

yumyumpoppycat · 16/05/2018 19:21

HighHorse do you buy the kimichi and sauerkraut?

I really like the 12 a day app but there are so many portions of grains and legumes. I never thought I would say this but there isn't enough veg!

Elementtree · 16/05/2018 19:30

That's what I thought too. It's a work in progress but I'll never manage beans for breakfaat!

I think most of my servings - porridge for breakfast etc- is easily two servings. And also when I add beans to salads, it must be two servings. But, I agree, that's my hardest bit.

Highhorse1981 · 16/05/2018 19:42

No I’m a pretty appalling cook

From sainsburys.
Fresh from Ocado

Tasty!

yumyumpoppycat · 16/05/2018 21:13

I think 2 portions of grains will be enough for me. If I eat 3 portions of beans my family will ask me to move out!

Thanks HighHorse will keep an eye out in sainsburys - they have all sorts of interesting things actually that weren't on sale a couple of years ago.

This all feels more doable now I have found a dairy free milk I quite like - koko coconut unsweetened. DP is irritated because I have been telling him it is fine to eat eggs chicken etc and now I am telling him we need to eat beans!

Had a nice stirfry tonight. My taste buds are changing but I did eat some chocolate and crisps so not exactly saintly!

HairyPorter · 17/05/2018 15:09

Thank you for posting this thread. I've been lurking and bought the book from reading the thread. I've been trying to follow it for the last couple of weeks but am not seeing any weight loss! I do feel great though but would really like to see the weight drop off too.. How is everyone else doing with weight loss?

yumyumpoppycat · 17/05/2018 18:12

Hi Hairy I have lost 5lbs in about 10 days but that has been partly through having 3 mini fast days a week where I eat between 800 -1000 cals a day. In theory I was going to monitor what I eat the rest of the week but so far I haven't really needed to so long as I am eating reasonably healthily and not snacking in the evening. Hope the lbs come off soon.

Highhorse1981 · 17/05/2018 19:42

Usual day for breakfast and dinner and fruit intake m

but had slightly different lunch. Marinated chicken with salad, went back for more salad and beetroot. I reckon 6 portions in total for that meal. Goodness, it was delicious. Followed by Greek yoghurt and a berry fruit salad and an apple.

That looks delicious HighHorse, and you're like me, lunch is not enough, have to follow up with fruit and yoghurt! What marinade did you use? It's really coloured the chicken, looks yum.

I've been doing well- highlights being Turkish style scrambled egg with fried off courgette, tomato and mushroom with wilted kale. Lots of roast Mediterranean veg- so good. Today's lunch was lidl veggie burger for a change - v nice - with half plate of kale and rocket, with beetroot and red and yellow peppers.

I'm down about 4lbs in the last month I'd say, have gone under 9stone. Will be pleased to lose a few more.

yumyumpoppycat · 17/05/2018 20:43

That does look delish Highhorse!

Turkish eggs sounds good Mikado. I had similar after my run - fried courgette with an omelette, just 2 eggs. they go quite well my omelette was random but tasted good as was so hungry, parsley, tomato puree some leftover peas and leftover new potatoes with a sprinkle of paprika and garlic powder.

Had a bfree sweet potato wrap with humus, mixed leaves (superfood florette was on offer) and olives. Fasting now apart from tea and coffee.

Highhorse1981 · 18/05/2018 10:55

I didn’t marinade...good ol M&S did!

Sweet chilli chicken. Delicious

Highhorse1981 · 18/05/2018 10:59

OP, how are you faring?

mikado1 · 18/05/2018 12:14

Today's lunch-sweet potato frittata with spinach and feta, kale, grated carrot, beetroot, red pepper and hummus on the side. So good.

Strawberries and Greek yoghurt with seeds to follow. Total so far today 9, dinner undecided as yet.

Finally a pic attached!

Love your pictures. I have had had a crazy week at work, DH away all week and DS started GCSEs so have struggled to keep up. My weight hasn't changed which I am quite happy about -maintaining at 9 st.
Back on it!

yumyumpoppycat · 19/05/2018 18:32

Mikado you prompted me to buy some beetroot! Trying to add in things I don't normally eat so got beetroot and salad cress yesterday, purple sprouting broccoli today.

Well done on maintaining when you are under stress Wilderness.

Wildernesstips · 20/05/2018 21:56

B: Poached rhubarb and strawberry (they were going over) (2)
L: Tuna Melt, Caesar salad and tomato, smoothie (3)
D: Gammon, potatoes, broccoli, carrots and broad beans (3)

I have some beetroot growing in my little veg box.

MinaPaws · 20/05/2018 22:46

frozen berries for breakfast with skyr and a sprinkling of sugar free nut muesli (1)
cherry tomatoes, chicory, spinach leaves, rocket and carrot sticks for lunch (5)
banana and handful of almonds - snack (2)
grilled peppers and onions, salad for dinner (3)
Total 11

Wildernesstips · 21/05/2018 18:36

Mina do you defrost your berries? I buy packs of them but I never thought to eat them frozen.

yumyumpoppycat · 21/05/2018 20:27

wilderness, my dp eats his berries frozen mixed with greek yog.

Having a couple of low cal days

Had the vegan falafel box from pret for lunch - I like this because if you ignore portion sizes I can tick off loads of daily dozen items Grin cruciferous veg, fruit, other veg, leafy veg, legumes and grains.

dinner was purple sprouting broccoli, lentils and rocket with herbs. also had strawberries.

MinaPaws · 22/05/2018 13:26

@Wildernesstips I eat them frozen in summer. Just stir a scoop of frozen berries into natural yoghurt or Skyr (I love skyr) tehn sprinkle a dessertspoon of no-added sugar nut muesli on top. Sometimes I make them up at 7am when I get up to feed cat and get DC's stuff ready for school but don't eat them until 10.30 when I'm back from yoga or swim or walk. Then they've slightly softened.

In winter I add them to porridge in the microwave and cook them. I love frozen berries.

Kikidelivers · 22/05/2018 14:58

Me too love skyr
That’s the feeek yoghurt I have.
Squirt of agave nectar and then piled high with raspberries

Pretty much best dessert out there IMO!
