Anyone looking to lose 100lbs plus in 2017-18 - Part 3

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 27/09/2017 19:49

Hello, welcome to the third instalment of the ‘Anyone looking to lose 100lbs plus in 2017’ thread. As we’re getting closer to the end of 2017, I’ve added 2018 for good measure Smile

If you want to read them (but by no means feel obliged!), the first and second threads are here: Part 1 and here: Part 2

We’re a very friendly, supportive group, and I think we’re all seeing some real changes in ourselves and our attitudes to food. It’s a long old road, but it helps to chat along the way Wink Collectively, we’ve lost 612 lbs since the start of the first thread, which is pretty amazing Grin

We tend to weigh in on Fridays or Saturdays, but feel free to join in at any time, with whatever weight loss method you think works best for you. Some of us have lost more than others, but we're all in this together, so if you're losing, gaining or staying the same, it's nice to have some inspiration to keep going.

We’re always welcoming to newcomers, but as with the previous thread, I will make one caveat - we’re all here because we are trying to lose a LOT of weight. If you’re looking to lose the last half stone, or even two or three stone, this might not be the thread for you. Good luck with your goals, but you may find more support with in threads with people who have similar goals.

And with that, I'm off to spam our old thread to fill it up Grin

Week 4
Total to lose - 100lbs
Gain this week 1.25 lbs
Loss to date - 3lbs
Left to lose - 97lbs

My comfort eating and drinking caught up with me. I feel pretty bloody pounds over the space of 4weeks, especially considering how much I have to lose. It should be coming off faster at the start and it just tells me that I have not committed to this properly. I saw the physio this morning and she has given me exercises to strengthen my ankle, including the exercise bike and swimming so that will get me off my bum and into the gym.

Does anyone else do this ; the day starts well, healthy breakfast, snack, healthy lunch, massive unhealthy dinner, wine? Repeat. How to stop?

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 24/10/2017 20:10

Minty, please don't be too disheartened - you didn't gain this weight overnight, so it will take time to lose it too. As long as you keep chipping away at it (not literally, chips will not help!), then it will come off. It always makes me wince when I see people spout 'oh it all comes off quickly at the start, especially if you have a lot to lose' - this just isn't the case for many of us. We lose in little bits, here and there, but it ALL adds up.

If you're having an unhealthy dinner, what's the trigger for that? Are you shattered by the time it comes to dinner (in which case, I recommend cooking double the night before) or too hungry because your breakfast and lunch aren't big enough? Are you eating away a bad mood, or just can't be arsed thinking about something healthy? Are you drinking enough water? Sometimes I think I'm hungry, and I'm actually thirsty instead.

Sorry if that sounds super patronising, but I've found really examining why my belly goes 'fuck it, just have a trough of pasta' is really helpful - it's usually masking an emotion. And you can't fix emotions with food. Now I'm recognising the emotions behind my decisions, it's really helping me be more objective about what I'm eating, and as a result, I'm eating far better.

Have to dash, but KOKO, folks Smile

Thank you so much Tractors, such wise words and exactly the right questions. I have 3 young kids and do a LOT of cooking for them. I find the noise and mess very stressful and when they have finally gone to bed I have to start thinking about supper for my husband and I (who is never in before 8). That’s when I will just feel so knackered by the day, uninspired because I have been churning meals out already and will open a bottle of wine on autopilot. Food is definitely a comfort to me, wine is too. I do recognize that but still reach for them when tired/stressed/upset. How have you managed to be more objective?

Today is going better though, I have had more water (thank you for reminding me, I needed that!), planned better and stayed calmer about the noise and mess.

BoredOnMatLeave · 26/10/2017 08:22

Hey Minty, try not to be disheartened. I find I HAVE to plan meals for the week otherwise I feel like that with dinner and just end up eating crap. I also now keep all meat in the freezer and take out what I need for the next day the night before. That way I know I have to use it and it keeps me in line with my meal plan.

Total to lose 91lb
Loss this week 2lb
Loss to date 18lb
Left to lose 73lb

Hercy · 26/10/2017 12:07

Like Bored, I find meal planning real helps that 'danger (fuck it) evening zone' especially if you are able to work it so you have no other choice.

I also find that exercising helps keep me honest - less likely to have something I shouldn't and 'waste' the effort of exercising. For me, it's best if I go to the gym straight from work, then as soon as I come in, have my planned healthy meal - I then don't have any opportunity to eat rubbish! I appreciate it may not be possible for you with kids' bedtimes etc, but you could always squeeze in a few runs up and down the stairs if pushed for time....

Booze definitely isn't helping, if you're anything like me, you can eat more when you've had a glass (or three) and then crave something stodgy the next day. Plus there's all the empty calories from the wine itself. I would really try to give it up for now, and then try only having it once or twice a week once you're really in the swing of things.

Hope everyone is having a good day!

PostNotInHaste · 27/10/2017 07:33

Chesty how are you holding up? So sorry, can imagine how stressful it is waiting and Imthi k you're doing brilliantly not turning to food. Well done on this week's loss, pretty amazing in the circumstances.

NotaNurse so sorry to hear about your DD and I hope her appeal is successful. My DD droppped out of her college course on day 1 and things have been pretty difficult since, my stress levels have shot up.

Welcome AnotherOtter and well done on this week's loss.

well done to SWlondonnanny

Sillysausage totally get you. It's an amazing feeling when you can barely jog for a minute then can do 20! You'll be knocking out 5k before you know it !

Minty don't let the gain put you off. You'll find over time your individual pattern. You're week 4 so you are possibly seeing something hormonal going on. Some people gain before period and ovulation. As NoTractors says KOKO is the key. Don't put pressure on yourself for what you feel should be happening , everyone is different. I used to be able to lose 8lbs in my first week years ago it it took a good few weeks to do that this time round. Can't add much to her good advice other than build in something after dinner as a bit of a treat. I've found that feeling deprived is ok short term but has a tendency to lead to the fuck it button going off. You're doing a new lifestyle that has to be maintainable so you want to be looking at a way of eating that fits that. personally I aim for 80% good quality food then the other 20% is whatever .

Well done Boredonmaternityleave good loss this week.

Hercy I find that with exercise as wel, though have to get mine over with in the morning as too knackered later.

I've been trying to maintain this month. Gone up and down by a bit either way but pleased to say I have successfully completed my first month of maintainence ever in my life as am exactly the same this morning as I was on 30 September. Plan is to lose during November and first half of December then maintain till New Year, cracking on again after that.

Bit worried something slightly of synch as am knackered in the evenings again plus big bags have turned up under eyes, sleeping gone to pot, periods all over the place, fluctuate between freezing and hot plus hair coming out again and I'm finding walks hard work and we haven't run for over a week. Assuming perimenopause plus stress with DD but I might give it another few weeks and think about GP appointment if not feeling better.

BreakingSad · 28/10/2017 13:11

Well done on maintaining PostNot and hope your body gets back in sync. Can I ask when your are maintaining, do you go by calories or by the Fitbit of what you’ve burned that day?

NotanurseFlowers

Had skipped last weeks weigh in and weighed in yesterday and 1 lb gain. Thought it would be worst. as I had three evenings eating out.

To Lose 113
Lost to date 50
Left to lose 63
Lost this week 1+

KOKO

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 28/10/2017 16:05

I've had a couple of days very 'off track' despite my initial good intentions and currently hungover to hell but will be popping back in tomorrow with fresh resolve Halloween Blush I can't pretend I made the best choices, but they could have been worse - and indeed, have been worse in the past! Ah well...now, can someone pass me something cold for my head... Halloween Wink

Could anyone help me estimate the half size baguette bread things from Morrisons bakery
How many would you say is in one half size baguette

PostNotInHaste · 28/10/2017 20:12

A Waitrose small baguette weighing 125g is 362 cals according to Nutracheck and the M and S half baguette (155g) is 405 cals.

BreakingSad I sort of go by Fitbit calories as have found over time it's reasonably accurate. I just keep an eye on the weekly figures as sometimes if not active and eat a lot I'll go over but it balances out other days. Looking back at last week Fitbit says I burned. 15975 cals, Nutracheck says I ate 15041. Week before was Fitbit 17809 v 16181 Nutracheck .Hard to know exactly if eating out so I leave a bit of room for error.

How it works in practice is in the morning I look at the figures from the day before and keep a running total of where I'm at for the week so it balances out. Think a pound on in 2,weeks is very good as well within normal eight fluctuations.

Did Parkrun with a friend today who is nearly exactly the same age as me, a month exactly between us. She's always been pretty fit and has run previously at times. Thought I'd slow her down but I didn't and she asked at one point if she was slowing me down which made me Grin (she so wasn't) .we're a way off this sub 30mins malarkey but happy just to be out there and able to do it. Hoping I didn't agree to doing a 10k next Easter, I was trying to be encouraging...Still think it is hilarious that I am writing this given my previous views on running and the fact a year ago I couldn't run up the stairs.

Sillysausage123 · 28/10/2017 21:26

Thanks Post I was way over estimating the calories in one of them!

AnotherOtter · 29/10/2017 10:57

Starting weight: 17st3/241lb
Current weight: 13st5/187lb
Loss this week: 1.6lb
Total loss: 54lb

A better week for me as my period finally arrived. Had to navigate a day out with friends and babies and managed pretty well though did have a slice of chocolate cake. Logged it in MFP but don't know how accurate the entry I found is.

Thanks for your explanation of how you maintain, Post. That makes a lot of sense. I think I will have to calorie count permanently as I don't think I will ever be able to trust my appetite to eat intuitively. Which model of fitbit do you use?

How are you holding up, Chesty? Is there any news of your DM's appointment?

Flowers to those struggling and well done for KOKO. What does STS mean please?

BreakingSad · 29/10/2017 12:37

STS means stayed the same and well done on the loss AnotherOtter. I think I’ll also have to log all my food forever, it does make me accountable.

PostNot I have started using the data from my Fitbit a lot more, so thanks for the info.

ChestyCoffin · 29/10/2017 12:53

Loss this week- Sts

post and otter thanks for asking, they squeezed her in on weds, had hysteroscopy and removed a polyp! Routinely send for histology but fingers crossed that's it.
We can go on holiday Grin

post I finally did the takeaway homework, the sky didn't fall in and am happy with a sts after a stressful week and it's ovulation week I think.

trinitybleu · 29/10/2017 13:43

Hello all. Checking in as a new starter although it's like the 100th time. Lost 2.5 stone last year which was great but suspect I've put most back on again. Just firing up the Wii to get a starting weight but I think I'll be too heavy for it again Blush

AnotherOtter · 29/10/2017 16:08

That's great news, Chesty Smile Fingers crossed for the biopsy result.

PostNotInHaste · 29/10/2017 16:51

Welcome Trinity Good to be getting back to it before Christmas so you can keep a lid on things over that time .

Well done AnotherOtter . I'll have to log for the rest of my life as well, I see it as my 'medicine '.

BreakingSad you'll get to know how accurate your Fitbit is over and I guess they are just a tool but a very handy one.

Chestycoffin , great news ! Fingers firmly crossed for a negative result from histology. So full on holiday mode ahead then! That takeaway homework will help I reckon. I'm very proud of us all if that doesn't sound too cheesy, think we're all doing really well and making progress towards where we want to be whilst learning really important lessons as to how we'll keep there when we finally get there.

2 more weeks and I'll have been at it for a year. Celebrating with afternoon tea with a voucher my lovely DD gave us for Christmas. We could have done other things but haven't been for afternoon tea as an adult and I fancy it. Back in the Spring I'd have been worried about it but we'll run the day before and keep things a bit lighter and on the day will dog walk and just have a bit of soup for lunch so it will be fine. Hopefully this planning is a move towards what thin people do naturally ?

ChestyCoffin · 29/10/2017 19:12

I think we're all doing marvellously post
I'm proud I dealt with the past few weeks without ramming my face Smile
Holiday will be a real test but I'm not stressing, normal people gain on holiday, the key is getting straight back to it after I think.
Afternoon tea sounds lovely.

trinitybleu · 30/10/2017 10:20

As suspected am too heavy for the Wii so that's my first goal.

Was doing ok yesterday til OH sabotaged me. Have had a word as he's creeping up weight wise too and said he wanted to tackle it.

Have left a Moroccan Chicken thing in the slow cooker so can eat as soon as I walk in tonight. Might end up having 2 dinners as will be hungry again by 9, but better than crisps etc.

ChestyCoffin · 30/10/2017 17:05

Do you have some scales Trinity?
Moroccan chicken sounds lovely!

PostNotInHaste · 30/10/2017 18:12

Hopefully in time your body will adjust Trinity and you'll not be as hungry in the evenings but sensible to plan for something rather than just grab.

Chesty you're right, it's that old KOKO thing again!

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 30/10/2017 20:31

Welcome trinity, hope your Moroccan chicken was as tasty as it sounds!

I'm back on track after a not-very-good weekend - was sorely tempted by the Costco doughnuts in the break-room at work, but decided against it, and I'm very glad I did Grin.

Still tired, but GP doesn't think blood tests are needed, just to sleep more and cut out caffeine...not that I need much of an excuse to have an early night Smile. If I don't improve in the next month or so, then they'll look further.

Hope you're all in a positive frame of mind - KOKO and here's to a productive week!

OP posts:
AnotherOtter · 30/10/2017 21:26

Don't know if you are thinking of buying scales, Trinity, but if so then I recommend Salter as they last. Amazon has ones that do to 250kg for £20 https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00KG58C7M/ref=mpssa112aa_it/257-1978725-5024042

Tractors, I really found cutting the caffeine right back helped with the quality of my sleep. Didn't think it would make such a difference. I now only have one caffeinated tea first thing in the morning and decaf the rest of the day. Makes it much easier to eat as I would like to when not shattered! Hope you feel better soon Flowers

trinitybleu · 31/10/2017 07:03

Was planning to just use the Wii Fit to weigh (especially as it has the history of previous weight loss to kick my ass with) but might buy the scales... Thanks for the link

Moroccan Chicken was nice. Had it with Aldi wholegrain rice and quinoa mix microwave pouch and was stuffed! No evening snack at all, apart from a slice of turkey whilst making DD's pack up!!!

tractors my best weight loss strategy last time was to go to bed! Used to go up with DD at 9pm at watch some TV there. Am so lazy I couldn't be arsed going back downstairs for snacks Blush

ChestyCoffin · 31/10/2017 07:13

trinity I went to bed early a lot in the beginning to try and ignore the hunger pangs. It's a lot easier now, not hungry on a night Flowers
