Anyone looking to lose 100lbs plus in 2017-18 - Part 3

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 27/09/2017 19:49

Hello, welcome to the third instalment of the ‘Anyone looking to lose 100lbs plus in 2017’ thread. As we’re getting closer to the end of 2017, I’ve added 2018 for good measure Smile

If you want to read them (but by no means feel obliged!), the first and second threads are here: Part 1 and here: Part 2

We’re a very friendly, supportive group, and I think we’re all seeing some real changes in ourselves and our attitudes to food. It’s a long old road, but it helps to chat along the way Wink Collectively, we’ve lost 612 lbs since the start of the first thread, which is pretty amazing Grin

We tend to weigh in on Fridays or Saturdays, but feel free to join in at any time, with whatever weight loss method you think works best for you. Some of us have lost more than others, but we're all in this together, so if you're losing, gaining or staying the same, it's nice to have some inspiration to keep going.

We’re always welcoming to newcomers, but as with the previous thread, I will make one caveat - we’re all here because we are trying to lose a LOT of weight. If you’re looking to lose the last half stone, or even two or three stone, this might not be the thread for you. Good luck with your goals, but you may find more support with in threads with people who have similar goals.

And with that, I'm off to spam our old thread to fill it up Grin

I'm loving NoTractors soups! I have some fennel I 'earned' for helping weed friend's allotment so might look at making some soup with that for lunch.

Well done to Hercy, BreakingSad, NoTractors and NoNurse on the Berthas and a couple of Borises in there too Grin

Tax return in and knee still sore but took ibuprofen and it held up on Parkrun this morning giving me a new personal best, thanks for asking NotaNurse .My plan to lose half a Bertha went out if the window as got very hungry, explained this morning by the kind of arrival of AF. yet again. Turned it into maintenance week but haven't weighed.

Lego did you enjoy your Nando's? For me personally focusing on the fact that I can eat what I want and am in control really helps.

Moonlight well done on bailing on the Dominoes, hope the rest of the week got easier.

Started opening my l'Occitane advent calaendar which is my treat to myself for losing weight. First Christmas meal for me next week. I'm happy to maintain for the rest of the year I think now, if I can shift a Bertha that's a bonus

PostNotInHaste · 03/12/2017 07:31

Notanurse I was wondering about your gallstones the other day. That is rubbish you're having to wait so long but agree there is something to be said for having more time to lose weight. Someone told me that it's good to step up the exercise the week or two before the op so I ramped up the walking at that point. No idea if it did help but everyone (including me!) were really surprised how quickly I bounced back.

Picked up some new jeans yesterday as had 25% off in Sainsbury's nad want to build next size down wardrobe. I think their sizes are big too but I can get into their size 12 which is highly gratifying and unthinkable a year ago.

Finally plucked up the courage to ask my cousin if she knows when my Granmother went through menopause. She doesn't but said she was 51 and my Aunt was 45. Need to hit Google translate and clarify that was when they finished rather than started symptoms. If when they finished and if my Mum was right when she said she was 55 (she had Dementia by then and generally lied a lot) then I wonder if she was later as her BMI was a lot more than them, 10'years between her and her sister. If so I wonder if I might follow Aunt and cousin and if my current all over the place periods have been kick started by the weight loss? I've read therevus a correlation between higher BMI and later menopause. I'm so done with periods and would love to think I don't have about another 7!years of them left I'd intakevafter my Mum.

AnotherOtter · 03/12/2017 10:33

Starting weight: 241lb
Current weight: 178.2lb
This week's loss: 2.6lb
Total loss: 62.8lb
To go: 38.2lb

Had a post-period whoosh without the period Confused No idea where it is still. Bertha and Boris were fuckers anyway. My blood pressure was really good (low!) at the nurse this week and might be able to come off my antihypertensive drug! Don't know whether it's the consistent walking or the weight loss or both but really pleased to see those numbers come down.

Hercy, it does my head in too when the scales don't move! It's so random at times and that just makes me doubt my method or think that I've crashed my metabolism, etc, etc. I am 100% on board with your down with men rant. So glad you got some movement in the end Smile

That is rubbish that you're having to wait so long for your gallbladder operation, Notanurse. Sounds so frustrating and unpredictable. Well done for trying to see the silver lining that there's more time to lose some more weight.

Post, well done on the running personal best. And the size 12s. You are doing amazingly! I hope you get the answers you are looking for about your family history of menopause.

AnotherOtter · 03/12/2017 10:35

Also meant to say well done to everyone who has lost this week and everyone who is KOKO Thanks

PostNotInHaste · 03/12/2017 18:35

That's great AnotherOtter ! I'd love to come off my blood pressure tablets but am not there yet.

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 03/12/2017 21:04

Wooo AnotherOtter - how great is that?!

I forgot to note my weigh-in yesterday - lost a Bertha, and so I'm after Boris this week Grin

Lost this week: 1lb
To lose: 124 lbs
Lost to date: 35 lbs
Left to lose: 89 lbs

I was going get lynched if I made yet more soup (although I highly recommend it!) - so chucked a chicken and tarragon stew in the slow cooker. Alas, after smelling amazing all afternoon, it's soooo bland so I'm trying to work out how to jazz it up without ruining it Blush. There's 5 cloves of garlic in it, so it should taste of that at least...but no! but at least no vampires Wink

Hope you've all had a good weekend, and here's to a KOKO week!

moonlight1705 · 04/12/2017 07:52

Wow, you are all doing really well! I think my bad week has caught up with me as I've put on 1lb.

Weight Loss (week 3): +1lb
Total Loss: 4lb

I am in a much better place this week though so will really give it a good go and have some lovely meals planned.
How is everyone coping with the dark nights? I'm finding I don't want to move out of the house after I get back from work, let alone go and exercise.

Hercy · 04/12/2017 11:05

Well done to everyone on the losses and NSVs.

Moonlight a pound/Boris will soon be gone. I find the hardest part to weight loss is getting my head in the right place, so now that you're feeling better on that front, I'm sure weight loss will follow.

It can be more difficult to find the motivation to exercise when it's cold and dark. I do the majority of my walking in the morning (husband usually takes the evening dog walking shift) and incorporated into my day, and my gym classes are straight after work, so I don't really have time to talk myself out of it. If going out in the evening really doesn't appeal, could you do an exercise video at home?

Anotherotter Men really are rubbish aren't they? Grin My husband has started doing 5:2 (he's not fat fat, but could stand to lose a stone or two). He gets to eat more calories on a fast day than a woman would, he doesn't have to cope with crazy PMS cravings or bloating and weight gain, or interference to exercise regime (aquafit mostly in my case) due to heavy periods. He's already lost half a stone in a few weeks and I have way less calories than him over the course of a week and do more exercise. S'not fair!!! p.s. you have done amazingly well!

I'm too late for your stew notractors but sticking a couple of lemons in next time might add a bit of flavour?

Hope you don't have too long to wait for your op notanurse but at least you are using the time wisely!

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 04/12/2017 18:53

I left the stew in the fridge overnight, and it's much tastier today, so not a complete waste Wink

I did have a startling discovery when dishing it up - I wasn't particularly hungry tonight, and as I've been used to having soup over the last few days unrepentant I thought I'd have a small bowl instead of a plate. Dolloped out what I thought was about right, and then decided to weigh the bowl versus a reasonable portion on a plate. Did the sums Shock Shock Shock - and the bowl was the bigger portion...by 70%! Lesson learned, a bowl is deceptive and using a plate makes you far more accountable. Had the smaller size, and I'm feeling just as satisfied now.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 04/12/2017 23:26

Hi all! Some amazing achievements, well done xx

I was struggling with the dieting and smaller portion aspects all in one go so I’ve started working on the eating sensible portions aspect which I hope in turn will slowly start a weight loss that I can then use to encourage a dieting aspect.

I’ve been taking a packed lunch everyday and tracking it on MFP, I’ve not eaten anything extra and haven’t binged in over a week!

I couldn’t get my 10k steps in today or yesterday and was annoyed so hopefully it means I’ll start to enjoy getting up to 10k!

Have a great week x

Hercy · 05/12/2017 11:25

Sounds like you've been taking some very positive steps Lego. It's sustainability that matters.

I lose track of weekly loss as I'm a daily weigher (think it's around 4lbs in the last 7-10 days) but total loss to date is 38lbs and I am hoping for a whoosh in the next few days as finally I lose this wanking TOTM bloat!

AnotherOtter · 05/12/2017 13:26

I find the dark nights tough too Moonlight. There's no way I would go out walking round here in the dark! My neighbours do but I'm a pretty anxious person. Can you get any time at lunch or the morning to walk or exercise? I am really lucky that I get a 45 minute walk each way in the daylight hours. I know a lot of people would kill for that time! I've seen people on here be really creative and work exercise into random times. Doesn't have to be done in one block to count. Even my not very fast walking has increased my fitness a lot and I feel better for it, especially my mood.

Hercy, it really isn't fair at all that men just seem to make a few half-hearted changes and the weight falls off them. Plus not having monthly fluctuations... every month it annoys me! Bastards Grin

The different plates thing gets me too, Tractors. I think it was you that said about a while back that you didn't have a "natural eye" for judging portions and that really struck a chord with me as I absolutely do not either. I just can't seem to work it out by eyeballing. I wonder if it's a skill that can be learnt.

You sound like you are being very sensible, Lego. Changing too much at once is a classic route to saying fuck it and giving up. You see that on these boards a lot. It takes me ages to make a new habit but I have accumulated several good ones over the last eighteen months now.

I have a SV. My scales said 12st 9.4lb so I am not obese anymore - by the tiniest of margins Grin But it was a major goal of mine. I had to have six anaesthetics in three weeks when my BMI was 41 and I got a lot of stick for it from the doctors. I thought I'd feel delighted but I'm a bit meh because I still have a long way to go. God, there's no pleasing some people! I am grateful that I'm moving forward though.

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 05/12/2017 20:12

Good going lego - you're making such positive steps, every you do will build on this.

Hercy - 38 lbs is fab, that's like removing a school-age child from your body Shock.

Well done AnotherOtter - that's a fab victory! Can understand it feeling bittersweet, but you've done so well - I can't wait until I'm at the same point.

I definitely think you can learn to 'get your eye in' when it comes to portion sizes, I just lack discipline to keep weighing stuff Blush In saying that, I've moved my little Salter digital scale out so I can weigh things, and the DCs are weighing things obsessively, so I'm hoping it will start to stick Wink. I know Post uses the Nutracheck app, which gives you portion guidance, and I keep meaning to download it (instead I downloaded a Stranger Things app, which was not my intention...Blush)

KOKO all - especially those of you how haven't popped on in a while,
come back any time! Smile

OP posts:
PostNotInHaste · 06/12/2017 07:24

Well done NoTractors on the Bertha! Scary about the bowl thing, wouldn't have thought that. Is the Stranger things app any good then?! I need to renew Nutracheck soon which I'll definitely do as it's part of my routine now.

Moonlight I do my exercise early as I know it isn't happening in the evening, at which point I resemble a sloth. Making arrangements with friends to do some helps as is hard to back out. Friend coming over tonight to do Pilates which I could do without as itbwill be evening and I don't do evenings plus am knackered as was out last night and because I have never done Pilates and don't have a clue what it will be like, but will have to as can't cancel.

Lego, lovely reading your post as can hear you're in a better place with it all. I couldn't do 10k a day at the start so set my initial target as 7k. Left it there for ages even when I was doing 10k as I liked it when it said I exceeded my target.

Hercy'I hear you on the TOTM bloat. I've stopped weighing for the moment as it is often TOTM for me at the moment. It seems to be more TOTM more than not currently.

AnotherOtter that's brilliant, a huge well done! I've been overweight for a couple of months maybe and can relate to the feeling still a long way to go but it is sinking in a bit now and i have random moments when I feel really pleased about it.

Christmas meal for me yesterday, the profiteroles were not great and not worth the calories really but it fitted into days calories as had walked lots. Last year I was too ill with gallbladder to go so very pleased I could this year.

Hercy · 06/12/2017 12:08

That's amazing Anotherotter, I cannot wait to be merely overweight!

I'm also ignoring the scales at the moment Post. Poor you having more than one TOTM, I don't think I could cope with that at all! I'm barely able to deal with the current pattern and it's effect on my weight as it is. It seems to go:

Week 1: Period. Bloating and cramps. Often interferes with exercise regime (aquafit)
Week 2: Actually feel good. No bloating and able to exercise as much as I want as loads of energy, usually my best week for weight loss.
Week 3: Start bloating up like a puffer fish for ovulation
Week 4: Never really deflate in time for the next pre-period bloat. Add in ridiculous cravings for pretty much all things junk.

So, it's just one week ONE WEEK per month that my stupid cycle doesn't interfere with my weight/exercise.

I'll be on my Week 2 phase by next week, so I promise I will stop ranting on about periods soon, sorry!!

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 06/12/2017 12:10

Had some really thirty news about my lovely friend yesterday and managed to fuck it all up by binging on a huge McDonald’s today

Idiot

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 06/12/2017 12:10

Shitty not thirty

Hercy · 06/12/2017 13:19

You didn't fuck it all up Lego. You fucked up one meal, which in the grand scheme of things is nothing. And even then you could say it's not really that much of a fuck up as it's important to treat yourself now and again to a bit of what you fancy (but not binge on huge amounts!)

That said, in the longer term, you will need to find better coping mechanisms than binging for bad news/bad days. But in the short term, don't beat yourself up. It takes a long time to form new habits, so if you slip up now, or even a few months from now, by binging as a result of a bad day, then learn from it. Think about how you were feeling and think what else you could do (other than binge). Think about what you could do to avoid having a binge in those circumstances (go out without your purse?) And then in a few years, hopefully the cycle of bad day binges will be over!

You can't expect old habits to be broken over night, it will take work and time and learning from mistakes. So forget thinking about yesterday as a failure, think more of it as a learning opportunity and get right back on the horse.......

moonlight1705 · 06/12/2017 14:19

I love that thought Hercy - I had a wobble yesterday and ended up having a McDonalds for lunch.......it wasn't even stress eating or emotional unlike Lego (which is totally understandable)- simply a habit that I need to break over time.

PostNotInHaste · 06/12/2017 15:08

Very wise words from Hercy . It's vital in my opinion to break the concept of 'good' and 'bad' and 'on the wagon ' and 'off the wagon', that's what leads to yoyo dieting. One meal does not wipe out all the other things you have done. Really sorry about your friend Flowers

Hercy'mt sympathies, rant away! My periods are getting more frequent and longer now which hopefully is the precursor to them pissing off totally but not helpful now.

AnotherOtter · 06/12/2017 15:33

I totally agree with Hercy. One meal that didn't go to plan (or one afternoon, one day, etc) doesn't mean that your previous efforts don't count or that you can't make changes in the future. What food you choose to put in your body is not all or nothing, it's shades of grey: nothing is ever totally perfect or totally terrible. I've detailed spectacularly several times including the whole first half of this year. What matters is keeping going. Also, a pound of fat is 3500 calories. One McDonald's isn't nearly that amount and even if it was one week with a small gain, it will barely be remembered in the long term. You can learn from this and put it behind you.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 06/12/2017 16:13

God you’re making me cry!!

I feel like I can’t stop failing...I’m so sad about my lovely friend but I can’t seem to stop eating my emotions which is ridiculous.

Thank you all so much xx

TheGhostOfBarryFairbrother · 06/12/2017 17:22

Hello waves nervously

I have a lot of weight to lose. I have schizophrenia and the medication means that I am about 30-40kg more than I should be.

Recently, since starting thyroxine and doing lots of exercise I have lost some weight and was starting to feel more confident about myself.

Then today the endocrinologist told me I have PCOS and need to lose weight... cue massive mental meltdown as the voices told me that I am disgusting and should cut myself etc.

I'm seeing the dietician on Friday and hopefully will have some pointers.

Can I join your gang?

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 06/12/2017 21:30

Welcome TheGhost - of course you can join in! Well done on losing some already, sounds like you have a lot on your plate. Do you have a plan of action? Hope the dietician is of help - do make sure you come back and tell us how you got on Smile

lego - echoing everyone else, sorry about your friend and hope things pick up soon.

Smile

Welcome Ghost Smile I have massive sympathy about the medication as I'm on an antipsychotic and a mood stabiliser for bipolar disorder. God, those drugs suck! Sorry to hear you're having symptoms brought on by the stressful endocrinology appointment. Do you have a CPN or someone in real life to talk to? I hope it settles soon and isn't too distressing. Good luck with your dietician appointment. They should have some really good advice for you.
