Who's with me for couch to 5k?!

Badgoushk · 08/06/2017 09:26

I'm going to start Couch to 5k when my new trainers arrive (today/tomorrow/weekend) and wondered if anyone wants to start too and we can have a little support group going?

I'm 39, 2 stone overweight, haven't done any running for over 10 years and even then I couldn't run 5k without walking. I have 2 young children and want to shape up. I currently swim twice a week and walk a lot (9,000 steps a day). But I'm still pretty unfit. I need to get my heart rate up!

So who is going to join me?! You need to be able to commit to 3 runs a week (30 minutes) for 9 weeks. Have a google of couch to 5k to see what it involves if you're not sure. I'll be using an app on my phone.

Who's in?!

Sore knee and whatnot, so I repeated W3. Just did W3R3 including a hill though and kept going easily. Ready for W4! Grin

Well done everyone at whichever stage you're at.

Another 1lb off at weigh-in today; am 11st 1lb - will be a huge barrier to get below 11st. My BMI is now 29.66. For a compliment the other day on my weight loss, yay! Feeling much more toned & positive.

How's everyone doing?

MirabelleTree · 26/08/2017 09:05

Well done Champagne, Edd and Prosecco

Congrats on the loss Prosecco and the huge achievement of being overweight, i"m jealous Grin

1.25lb off for me and BMI 30.6 so hopefully I too will be overweight in not too distant future. 3 runs this week. Getting slower and slower but figure that as long as i'm doing it that's all that matters.

MirabelleTree · 26/08/2017 09:08

Can feel PMT ranking up a level which might not bode well for next week.

Hercules12 · 28/08/2017 12:42

Hi. Can i join on please.
I need to lose 3 stone but haven't weighed myself since starting couch. I just finished week 6 this morning.
I know ive not lost weight as clothes no different but I do feel much better.
My running time is very slow though and achieving 5k seems still s long way away.

MirabelleTree · 29/08/2017 11:26

Hi Hercules and welcome . Give it another week and you'll be consistently running longer period of times, it all comes together quite quickly. Keep focusing on running slowly at this point to build up time which is the most important thing at this point.

Weight wise I stalled for quite a few weeks with C25K then it has suddenly started coming off slowly again. I was reading that we'll get faster as we get thinner so there is that to look forward to.

Hercules12 · 29/08/2017 15:56

Thanks! I'm back to work after 6 week holiday next week so will find it much easier to lose weight then. I really struggle during the holidays.
I'm looking forward to longer runs being easier that's for sure and losing weight and so being faster too.

Ulysses · 31/08/2017 05:31

Hello Hercules! We're about the same stage and I ran w7r2 yesterday. I'm doing about a bit less than 4km in 25 mins so it feels like it will be a while before I reach 5km. My Fitbit says my pace was 6'23 so it would take me over 35 mins to do 5km and I really don't have the stamina for that... yet.
I was beet red by the end yesterday and earned a headache. I am happy with where I am though and making little improvements.

My weight has been around the same levels for the past few weeks despite my cal intake always being below my limit so yes am disappointed with that. I am feeling much better at least and have much more energy, it's just a shame that the scales say otherwise!

Keep going everyone, it's so lovely to hear everyone's progress!

MirabelleTree · 31/08/2017 06:58

Ulysses abour 4k in 25 mins is going some ! Is that pace 6'23 minutes per km? If so wouldn't that mean you would do 5k in 31 mins 55 secs? That is way faster than I can do it, am very impressed !

The difference between doing 4k and 5k is not big compared to couch to the first couple of km, you'll be there soon. I think though having a headache at the end might mean you are going a bit too fast. The C25k forums suggest running so you can have a conversation.

My weight did much the same for a good few weeks which was fustrating whilst it lasted.

Ulysses · 31/08/2017 11:45

Mirabelle - what a dafty I am I've included the warmup! It was 3.14 so far less impressive.

I guess I was going too fast as well. I passed by one of the school mums and for some reason needed to push myself harder! Blush

Ulysses · 31/08/2017 11:52

Actually might be being to hard on myself. I accidentally paused my Fitbit at one point and I think it stopped calculating. The minutes should be at 25 so would assume the km should be further also. I ran the same route on Friday and it was 3.73km long and I went a bit further yesterday.

Who's with me for couch to 5k?!
Hercules12 · 31/08/2017 13:15

Sounds really good Ulysses. I did wk7 run 1 yesterday and was surprised that a ran a little further than the wk6 25 min run. I'm going to try a treat mill run on Friday to see if I can do a 5k. I'm aiming for 40 mins. Does anyone know what speed I need to set it for?

Ulysses · 31/08/2017 14:27

Thanks Hercules. Think you are aiming for just over 5 mph as 5km = 63% of a mile and 40 mins = 67% of an hour. Numbers clearly aren't my strong point though!

Hercules12 · 31/08/2017 15:47

Thanks Ulysses! Your maths is better than mine.

MirabelleTree · 01/09/2017 07:32

You're both doing really really well. Significantly better than me, run this morning was remarkable - for its slowness! We both felt a bit fragile and I had nearly a 1k calorie deficit yesterday plus ran on an empty stomach. I've found I do much better when I've had 2000 cals plus the day before and run later in the morning after breakfast.

Have learned though the most important thing is to just do it. Lovely sunrise and mist effect this morning. Huge puddles so had to go round them dodging tree roots.

Heading to a gain tomorrow on scales but I think that is AF so hopefully next week will be better.

MoreProseccoNow · 01/09/2017 15:54

Hi all - really good to hear how you're doing. Some real progress being made.

I've had a mixed week. Ran 1st thing on Sunday & was awful - really struggled, right from the beginning. Legs were heavy & just hated it. After 4K I was miserable & had stopped a few times. So I gave myself permission to stop & walked home.

Monday was good - I'd come to the decision to stop pressuring myself & try to enjoy it (rather than concentrating on speeding up to

MirabelleTree · 01/09/2017 16:01

Totally relate to that Prosseco and that is pretty much where I am. Was chatting to a friend on dog walk once and saw some bloke absolutely sprinting round. We looked at each other and said 'oh he must be young' . Watched the back of his slightly balding receding head vanish into the distance and were like 'or maybe not' Shock She's been doing it for 3 years and hasn't got under 30 mins for a 5k but we were saying today we think enthusiasm and performance goes in peaks and troughs and important thing is to just keep at it.

I might not even bother to weigh in this week and just do it next week. As long as I'm down a few pounds each month I'm happy with that.

MirabelleTree · 02/09/2017 07:15

Quarter pound on this week.

MoreProseccoNow · 02/09/2017 12:09

I have maintained, which I'm really happy about. Might do a 5:2 day this week to give me more of a push - would really like to get below 11st.

MirabelleTree · 03/09/2017 09:01

Well done Prosseco! I contemplated a 5.2 day but DS as would like to get my BMI under 30 soon but have both DC starting new schools this week and think I'm going to need the calories to cope! I'm resigned to the 4.5lbs I need taking a good few weeks.

MirabelleTree · 04/09/2017 07:39

So I ate 54 cals more than I burnt off over the weekend. Today therefore has to be light on the calorie front.

Saw two deer whilst out this morning which was lovely. Did the hilly route and managed 4K in 30 mins instead of 3.3k I did last time I tried it. Then realised was a bit short on steps so after a bit of a walk did another 1k. Hope to have at least 1000 cal deficit at end of day, ideally 1500k which would get me back on track for a pound loss this week. Just need to be very very careful this evening with food.

MoreProseccoNow · 04/09/2017 21:57

Yesterday morning was another struggle (mornings are definitely worse for me) - plus it was day 1 of AF - surprised myself by finishing in 34min 35s.

Tonight it felt so easy & yet I was over 35 mins.

I did so well with my 5:2 day yesterday until DP produced Vienetta after main course & I succumbed. Today has been good though.

MirabelleTree · 05/09/2017 06:41

There doesn't seem to be much logic does there? I have only ever run in the mornings but have found I'm better later morning rather than early morning. That was very mean of DP tempting you with Vienetta!

Much better food day for me yesterday, DC start new schools today so must be careful not to lose the plot foodwise to keep momentum going.

LosingItThisYear · 05/09/2017 07:00

Can I join? I was on another C25 thread but it's gone quiet.

I'm on week 5, and slightly dreading the 20min run that's coming up!

MirabelleTree · 06/09/2017 07:48

Welcome Losingitthisyear . We all dreaded the 20 minute run but the feeling when you do it is brilliant and you can do it, it's just your head thinking you can't - your body has other ideas!

R2 done.
