Who's with me for couch to 5k?!

Badgoushk · 08/06/2017 09:26

I'm going to start Couch to 5k when my new trainers arrive (today/tomorrow/weekend) and wondered if anyone wants to start too and we can have a little support group going?

I'm 39, 2 stone overweight, haven't done any running for over 10 years and even then I couldn't run 5k without walking. I have 2 young children and want to shape up. I currently swim twice a week and walk a lot (9,000 steps a day). But I'm still pretty unfit. I need to get my heart rate up!

So who is going to join me?! You need to be able to commit to 3 runs a week (30 minutes) for 9 weeks. Have a google of couch to 5k to see what it involves if you're not sure. I'll be using an app on my phone.

Who's in?!

Well done Prosecco! I've given up on understanding my body, fastest run so far was the week I had AF and felt a bit shit. Hang in there, it will disappear soon, eat some prunes or something !

Was faster today at 6.59 m/km plus walked dog after so done my 10k steps for the day. Which is good as only did 2597 the entire day yesterday..

EddSimcox · 14/08/2017 23:10

Right, back in the UK. Time to try and get into a bit of a routine. I'm also starting the No-S 'diet'. And will try to exercise every day. Will be relying on you lot to keep me going!!

Well done Prosecco, Mirabelle and Galop - i'm so impressed. I'm on W3R2 tomorrow. I live on a steep hill. Wish me luck!

MirabelleTree · 15/08/2017 11:00

Good luck tomorrow Edd I live at the top of a steep hill so have a flat bit round the corner which is good as I'm rubbish with Hills!

beepbeeprichie · 15/08/2017 11:44

Well done Prosecco I'm sure the pound will be a blip. Enjoy your hills Edd Grin
I know what you mean Mirabelle my body is all out of synch. I ate so much yesterday due to AF. If there had been more junk in the house I would have eaten it!!
The good news is that I have done the 30 min run! W9R1 completed. Baby was up so early I decided that as soon as he went down for a snooze I would hit the treadmill. I can't tell exactly what speed I was running as I forgot to check after the warm up walk but I think it was about 8.3kmph. It was actually ok. I was listening to the radio at the time which was quite motivational. I can't believe I've done it. I just want to do it again a few times before I get hung up on the speed though! Sizes are still tight so I am stretching frequently.

MirabelleTree · 15/08/2017 12:22

That is brilliant Beepbeep, well done Smile

TheChampagneGalop · 15/08/2017 18:32

Good luck Edd - hills are a nuisance Grin
Just did a shorter free run today since I was knackered. Better than nothing. And my breathing has improved, trying to think about slow belly breaths.

EddSimcox · 15/08/2017 22:56

Found a flattish route and managed not to stop :)
The bad news is I have 20kg to lose.

MirabelleTree · 16/08/2017 07:44

Well done Champagne and Edd I did a slow one this morning and my breathing was much better. If it is any consolation I have about 17kg to lose .

Yesterday evening was more active than anticipated and I had a larger calorie deficit than planned. I do notice it if I've eaten less the day before.

Ulysses · 16/08/2017 13:38

Well done to everyone for getting out there, however, long or fast it was!

I've just finally done Week 5 Run 2. Should have done it Monday morning but got up too late and Tuesday's are a no-no as I've got a 4 hour commute. I've normally the same commute on Wednesday's too but the schools started back today so I have been able to work from home and did my run in my lunch break.

It felt really good, great in fact and I'm not so nervous about the next one which is for 20 mins without stopping. Can't believe I'm saying that!

TheChampagneGalop · 16/08/2017 14:01

It's going to feel amazing when you've done the 20 min one Ulysses. I wondered how on Earth I was going to be able to do it but somehow did and it felt great afterwards.

I seem to have hit some kind of wall now though and feel very tired (and turn an unflattering shade of beet red) on my runs - hope it passes soon.

MoreProseccoNow · 17/08/2017 21:44

Just checking in; really pleaded to see how well everyone is doing - good work people!

I'm still doing 5K in 35mins, pleaded with that. Finding it better when I loosen up a bit & try to do bigger strides (seems to help the joints, think I was a tense jogger before!).

Definitely feeling my legs & bum are more toned. Just a shame about my pot belly 🙀

MoreProseccoNow · 17/08/2017 21:45

Why can't I write "pleased" - what's wrong with me?! Runners brain? Shock

MirabelleTree · 18/08/2017 10:14

That's brilliant Ulysses , hope the 20 min one goes well.

Galop I'm always beetroot red whilst running ! I'm now slower than a few weeks ago but I figure just keep at it, at least we are getting out there and doing it.

Well done Prosseco that is good, I'd be very pleased if I could do that. Can relate to tense jogger bit.

I still do get stiff legs and arse, wondering if that will ever pass? R3 this morning done, weigh in tomorrow though had a peak earlier.

Ulysses · 18/08/2017 13:17

Afternoon, well I just ran non-stop for 20 minutes! I am so pleased with myself. It was hard going for a bit and I told myself that I am going to be able to do this and I'm going to do even more for longer and faster at some point too.

I've never been good at finishing much of anything - further education courses, craft and DIY projects and this will be my 3rd attempt at C25K but I really am determined to do it this time. I have been really envious of friends, relatives, colleagues and school mums who have gotten there (including you guys!) and are regular runners and I want this to be my thing too.

Thanks for the virtual cheers ladies - it does make a difference.

I have had a sore head after the last couple of runs and expect its because of dehydration. I am also guilty of not doing the warm down stretches.

Ooh it was weigh in day today as well and I am the same as last week, despite all my efforts. But for now I will bask in the glory of my 20 minute run!

MoreProseccoNow · 18/08/2017 15:34

Well done, Ulyssees - that's a triumph! It feels so good to run for that long, and such a great achievement.

MirabelleTree · 18/08/2017 17:11

Hurray Ulysses well done ! They do say 3rd time lucky. I drink a bottle of water before I go which so far and surprisingly my bladder has coped with.

MoreProseccoNow · 18/08/2017 18:02

I'm terrified to eat/drink for a couple of hours before I go out. And I make sure I have Rennie's too - pretty sure I keep their share price up xx

MirabelleTree · 18/08/2017 18:14

It does worry me but so far so good . I go early morning and find I need something so it's a small bottle of water moment I wake up then a banana or some breakfast biscuit things. I read about getting stitches when dehydrated so thought I should try.

Right shin aching a bit, hopefully will go away.

MirabelleTree · 19/08/2017 06:42

Lost 1lb this week which i' pleased about, After Badgoushk said how many calories she was eating I realised I wasn't eating enough to sustain the running and walking so I've averaged 2100 cals a day and exercise is approx 3211 cal. In theory exercise lost me a pound. 74.25kb gone' 34.75lb to go.

MoreProseccoNow · 20/08/2017 08:17

Morning all! I managed my usual run in 34min 30s - so am speeding up a little. Finding it so much harder to increase the speed compared to the distance. But good to break the 35 min barrier.

MirabelleTree · 20/08/2017 08:19

That's really good, well done! A milestone.

Ulysses · 20/08/2017 09:30

Well done MoreProescco! That's excellent. And congratulation in the weight loss Mirabelle.

I've just done W6R1, which is two 5 mins runs with an 8 min one in between. It was hard going and I've come back exhausted. Was expecting it to be easier than the 20 min one but there you go and that's it done.

MirabelleTree · 21/08/2017 07:52

Well done Ulysses. I found after doing the longer ones the intervals much harder than I expected, same happened start of week 7. But having done the long ones you know you can do the short ones and by the end of next week you'll be on longer ones only I think.

R1 done and I did the big hill finally. Very very slowly but I did it. Google tells me I'm a trail runner (more crawler this morning) and GPS isn't always accurate in woods so that is my new excuse for any times/ distances I don't like.

TheChampagneGalop · 23/08/2017 19:07

Keep up the good work everyone!
I seem to have gotten over my tiredness - just finished the 22 min one! Yes I'm happy Grin
Now there is no walking parts just running for the rest of the program Shock

MoreProseccoNow · 23/08/2017 22:35

Good work Champagne - this thread is so positive!

I'm slowly increasing my speed, am now at 34 mins. What seems to work for me is walking to cross the roads - these 20s breaks 2-3 times help me get my breath back & push on.

Having a good week diet-wise, fingers crossed for weigh-in day on Saturday.
