Who's with me for couch to 5k?!

I'm going to start Couch to 5k when my new trainers arrive (today/tomorrow/weekend) and wondered if anyone wants to start too and we can have a little support group going?

I'm 39, 2 stone overweight, haven't done any running for over 10 years and even then I couldn't run 5k without walking. I have 2 young children and want to shape up. I currently swim twice a week and walk a lot (9,000 steps a day). But I'm still pretty unfit. I need to get my heart rate up!

So who is going to join me?! You need to be able to commit to 3 runs a week (30 minutes) for 9 weeks. Have a google of couch to 5k to see what it involves if you're not sure. I'll be using an app on my phone.

Who's in?!

I'm sort of in. Completed week 2 just before op 2 weeks ago and surgeon said I could do it after 2 weeks ie. now . I am a bit wary though and really do need to go and get proper running shoes.

Did try 2 x 90 seconds runs this morning to see how it felt. Runs is a massive exaggeration as a tortoise could overtake me. I have at least 2.5 stone to lose having lost 4.5 stone so far.

IWillCrushYouLikeABug · 08/06/2017 17:39

Me and the pie in my hand will decline your kind offer. We do however wish you all the best in all of your running endeavours.

puglife · 08/06/2017 17:53

I'll join you! I have new bright trainers too (also size 8.5!) but I'm finding it really hard to motivate myself!

beepbeeprichie · 08/06/2017 20:30

Ok I'm in. I've got about 20lbs to lose. If you could post a link the app or the web page or whatever I can start tomorrow. I've got a baby so desperately trying to lose some of the disgusting blubber and fit back into my clothes Blush

beepbeeprichie · 08/06/2017 20:31

I also have new and very bright trainers but they are blue Smile

Badgoushk · 08/06/2017 21:50

Excellent news Mirabelle, Pug and Beep!

Well... I just did W1R1 and it was great!! I was quite nervous and I could feel bits of myself jiggling around but I just thought about the day in the future when I'll be lean and no longer jiggling!!

I took it slowly and the first couple of runs were moderately tough. But it got easier. And I pretty much sprinted the last run! I have a nice man encouraging me on the BBC app - Sanjeev Kohli. I don't know who he is but he has a nice voice. I went all shy when he said "Well done!" at the end. Ha ha!

I'm really excited about my next run now. When I got home I had a glass of water and stretched my quads, hamstrings, inner thighs and calves. I presume that is what I'm supposed to do?!

I'll weigh myself in the morning and will post my other exercise on here too to keep me motivated, if you don't mind.

Oh and running is great for my steps! I did 11,600 today!

So we have 7 of us on this thread now who are starting this week!!

beepbeeprichie, I can't seem to work out how to link to the app but I'm using the Couch to 5k one that I think is a BBC one. If you go to App Store it should show up. It was free and has a turquoise logo.

Evening everyone,
I started week 1 day 1 this morning. This is my third attempt at doing C25k but I have a 5k obstacle course run booked for end of July so hoping this time, I will be a bit more motivated. This thread may help me stay on track too! Smile

Badgoushk · 08/06/2017 22:20

Well done Cheekybiscuit.

I've found my tribe! Can I join too?

I'm on week 2, using the NHS choices website up thread. I do a lot of walking (8/10K + steps daily) but am overweight & middle-aged Blush

I used to run in my life before DC & was pretty fit and 2-3 stone lighterDS is now 8 & I've never got re-started properly since he was born.

So I got an updated version of my 20-year old Asics from sportsshoes.com & got a decent sports bra (a Freya active intense) as I'm a FF cup.

Am finding it ok so far, but think I'll maybe have to repeat the weeks further on before moving up.

My ambition is to run 5K on the flat.

peanutbutter2409 · 08/06/2017 22:31

I'm in! Will start tomorrow

BanburyBun · 08/06/2017 22:34

Well that's the first run done! I wasn't quite sure how fast a "brisk walk" was so I did 5.5kmph. Hopefully that's ok.
Really glad I've started this now. Thanks OP!

MooChops89 · 09/06/2017 19:12

beepbeep I tend to do 5.5kmph walking and 9 or 9.5 on the run parts. Any faster and I don't think I could finish the session Grin

packofshunts · 09/06/2017 20:34

Wow MOO 9.5 is fast!

bambisims · 09/06/2017 20:37

Just wanted to say well done all!!! I did my couch to 5k a few years ago and haven't looked back. I now happily (wrong word but I do it) 10k so I'm now doing my 10k - half marathon. Just finished week two... well done to everyone enjoying seeing all your progress 😊

Badgoushk · 09/06/2017 20:52

beepbeeprichie, well done! Did you do it on a treadmill presumably? Do you have one at home? I went out pounding the pavements! I'm looking forward to run number 2 tomorrow night!

OP posts:
Badgoushk · 09/06/2017 20:53

bambisims, how did you build up from 5K to 10K? Over what time period?

OP posts:
beepbeeprichie · 09/06/2017 21:04

Yes I did it on a treadmill, once my husband got home from work. It's a bit more boring than running outside but it means I could run when the baby sleeps during the day (hopefully!!)

MoreProseccoNow · 09/06/2017 21:06

Just done week 2 run 2; am still finding it ok. Going to skip tomorrow as my period is starting & day 1 is always a bad 1.

Finding the technology the worst of it! Wish I could work out how to use the c25k app & listen to music at the same time, but not mastered that one yet Shock

bambisims · 09/06/2017 23:09

Babgoushk (sorry if I've spelt it wrong couldn't copy and paste on phone!!) anyway, I'm not 100% how long it took I just kept running after couch- 5k and just rana but more each time. You can however get the same type of apps to go from 5-10k. I didn't use one thought and just did it 'naturally' but feel I need one to push me on to 1/2 marathon. My ultimate goal is London when ds has started school. He's 3 in august so couple years to go.....

Loubilou09 · 10/06/2017 06:30

Just wanted to throw in some encouragement and good vibes!!! One of my main ambitions was to run. I have been doing quite a bit of exercise since January but hadn't really run - had done a little bit on the treadmill and had run 4 minutes outside once (which nearly killed me) and was going on holiday at the end of March. As I was going to be missing all my classes and other exercise I decided whilst I was away for 2 weeks that I would try and run everyday. I used one of the couch to 5k apps and admittedly moved it to about week 3 or 4 as I knew I could run 3-4 minutes already but by the end of 2 weeks I was running 20 minutes flat (ran 9 times in the 14 days). Since then I have run fairly consistently but still have only managed to fit in 2 runs a week alongside all my other exercise and last night ran 5.3 miles in just over an hour - that's less than 3 months from 4 mins to over 60 minutes!!! Shock I am so surprised at that. I am nearly 50 and although I have lost 2.5 stone I am still overweight, was an ex smoker and generally fairly unfit so it can be done!!!!

Good luck one and all x

redcaryellowcar · 10/06/2017 07:19
