Who's with me for couch to 5k?!

Badgoushk · 08/06/2017 09:26

I'm going to start Couch to 5k when my new trainers arrive (today/tomorrow/weekend) and wondered if anyone wants to start too and we can have a little support group going?

I'm 39, 2 stone overweight, haven't done any running for over 10 years and even then I couldn't run 5k without walking. I have 2 young children and want to shape up. I currently swim twice a week and walk a lot (9,000 steps a day). But I'm still pretty unfit. I need to get my heart rate up!

So who is going to join me?! You need to be able to commit to 3 runs a week (30 minutes) for 9 weeks. Have a google of couch to 5k to see what it involves if you're not sure. I'll be using an app on my phone.

Who's in?!

How did you get on, losing?

This thread has gone very quiet too - how's everyone doing?

I'm doing 5K in 34.5-36 mins - finding it really tough if I push myself harder - that extra 90s faster seems to kill me! Going for slower & happier here!

PostNotInHaste · 09/09/2017 07:13

NC here. Not feeling completely well this week so didn't do R3 this week. STS this week, I'm 'owed'' 1.5lb from the last 2 weeks so hopefully that will come off soon.

Been going for slow and happy here too!

LosingItThisYear · 09/09/2017 07:52

Hello, well I did my 20 min run. It was hard though, and I'm wondering how I'm going to manage after the next couple of runs (which are intervals).

People who've done c25 before all the way to the end, have you managed it straight away, or did you repeat certain runs until you'd cracked them?

PostNotInHaste · 09/09/2017 07:59

Well done ! I did it straight away but I can not stress enough how incredibly slowly I ran! Your mind is the biggest enemy with this I found. Having said that there is absolutely no shame in repeating runs, they are not failures, they are practice runs.

LosingItThisYear · 09/09/2017 08:54

Thanks Post, I'm wondering if repeating runs will give me an excuse not to move on though. I think I'll try to keep going right through. I'm not quite running at the pace my app expects though.

EddSimcox · 09/09/2017 09:35

Hi guys. Checking in.
I'm on W5, all going well except I have plantar fasciitis. Which is basically heel pain caused by tendon damage. It's so very frustrating, and I think I'm going to have to stop for a bit. Need a few days rest, some exercises, and some special insoles I think. Anyone else had it? I will try to keep fitness up doing something else, or just run through it on pain killers I don't know. It's exasperating.

I've done a few repeats Losing, it really helps, especially if you can't avoid running on hills, or you've run when you've been a bit poorly or something.

MoreProseccoNow · 10/09/2017 17:36

That's such a shame, Edd - are you in pain? Sounds sore!

I ran again this morning; it's definitely a struggle earlier in the day - yet my times are better despite this - who knows?!

No weight loss this week, am stable at 11st 1lb - thought I'd done better diet-wise but hey-ho.

PostNotInHaste · 10/09/2017 18:16

Ouch Edd, my deepest sympathies. I've had It in the past so wear insoles in my running shoes in an attempt to prevent it. I saw somewhere that you can strap it up to help with the pain and I write the alphabet with my foot before getting out of bed in the morning when I remember. There are other stretches you can do to help.

Well done Prosseco . I've come to the conclusion the whole thing isn't logical and just to enjoy it as much as possible. Think I wil, try again tomorrow morning as feeling a bit better. Have hugely over eaten today with less than 2000 steps. Aiming to stay the same this week and will go for it more next week

PostNotInHaste · 13/09/2017 07:01

How is everyone? Just done R2 . Was too dark to go in woods when I started so did a road loop up a horrible hill so was very slow nad very puffy. Then did last bit in the woods which was huge relief as flat. My shin is slightly playing up.

MoreProseccoNow · 13/09/2017 07:09

We'll done, post. Good progress - hope your shin is ok.

I wanted to run last night, but my partner wasn't home till 7.30, at which point I started my warm up walk. I was wearing a thin t-shirt. By the time I got to the end of the warm up it was bucketing rain & I was soaked, so I just ended up running back home. So I'll try tonight.

Diet wise, I've decided to have a maintenance week & will start afresh next week with hopefully a bit more motivation.

PostNotInHaste · 13/09/2017 07:16

Practice run then last night ! I am the same on the diet front and am minus 876 calories which need to be recovered by Saturday to make it a maintenance . My mojo has gone, really stressed as DD didn't get on with college course so need to help her find something else and it is overtaking my life this week, whilst trying to keep it calm for DS who started new school. . Quite disappointed with myself that I'm comfort eating but am keeping logging so I know where I am.

MoreProseccoNow · 13/09/2017 20:32

Torrential rain again here tonight (bloody Scottish weather!) - feeling disproportionately guilty for not running since Sunday! Have managed 3x per week since June - even on holiday. And sat on my backside all day at work BlushForecast is good for tomorrow though.

PostNotInHaste · 14/09/2017 07:00

Sympathies I have never in my life been as wet as on a run in Edinburgh this summer, looked like I'd been under a hosepipe! Last week was the first time I'd missed the third run so can relate to the guilt.

Better food day yesterday and only now need to 193 calorie deficit for it to be a maintenance week. Weighed this morning for first time in a bit and am 3lbs down which is what I'm 'owed' from previous 2 weeks when I gained a quarter and STS. Weird how it works and if they are anything different Saturday morning I'm using today's weigh in.

Very close to being overweight now, BMI 30.1 this morning.

EddSimcox · 15/09/2017 08:05

I don't know how you can all do the calorie counting thing as well! I need the carbs to do the runs. Still props to you all - I'm probably just jealous really! I have lost about 3kg (6lbs?) so far just doing the 'no snacks, no sweets, no seconds' rule (weekdays only) so I'm going to stick with that I think. I'm thinking about it in 4kg blocks - the next 4kg will take me to 11.5 stone - Christmas? then 4kg to 11 stone - Easter? - then we'll see. If all goes well I should be normal BMI by next summer. Really hoping that doing it really slowly like this with sustainable eating habits and lots of exercise I can really make this is a forever thing and not just another diet cycle... Hmm

So I did W5R2 again yesterday as I've taken a few days off for the foot thing. It was fine, doing the running, but my foot hurt more yesterday evening. Grr. Really annoying. W5R3 is the 20 min run so I'm holding off doing that until it's a bit better. Or I might just do it tomorrow! Grin
Need to get new everyday walking shoes and put orthotic insoles in them, think that will help.

Keep up the good work everyone, you are inspirational!

PostNotInHaste · 20/09/2017 10:13

How are you all doing ? Hope your foot feeling a bit better Edd

R2 done this morning but was dark so couldn't go in woods so it involved Hills and was very slow. I've cut my calories and increased exercise this week as would really like to get to overweight but again have found I can't really run if I do that.

MoreProseccoNow · 25/09/2017 22:30

Helloooo! It's gone very quiet here....

Have managed 3x runs last week, but finding it variable - sometimes easy, other times a struggle. Definitely better after work in the evenings, but it's getting dark so early now I've had to get my head around running in the dark during the week.

Can't seem to concentrate on weight loss just now, had a couple of really busy weeks with lots on. Not being excessive, but not doing enough to lose.

How's everyone doing?

PostNotInHaste · 26/09/2017 06:42

I sa,e as you Prosseco! Very variable s to how it feels. Managed 3 last week but it's now dark when I usually go so can't do the woods. Havevfound a pavement route without Hills which has helped and yesterday made managed 6'44 (fastest since Edinburgh) whereas 2 runs before that was 8'39 so really variable.

Think I need a more visible top really. Weight loss has been going ok. AF here at moment so up a bit but hard realised I had sneaked into the overweight category the other day.

Firefries · 26/09/2017 18:33

Ok so I didn't join this thread earlier as I didn't see it, but I started couch to 5k at the end of July (with a few holiday/away gaps). I'm at week 7, day 2. I just pushed myself yesterday to run 5km (further than the app asked) which I did (yeah) with only a 5 min walk to warm up! I was pretty impressed with myself as when I first started I couldn't run 60 seconds without feeling like I'd probably die - you know when you count down every second of jogging and enjoy the walks which somehow the seconds go to quickly. Anyway I'm nearly done now and just pushing myself to finish this hopefully by next week.
I just wanted to encourage you all to do this from wherever you are at - just keep going. You can do it. I am seriously not a runner so if I can, you can.
Also I am on another MNthread now trying to shift some pounds so although I'll keep running, I'm really trying to watch what I eat and change my eating habits so I can be overall more healthy. So good luck from me. I might pop back some time and see how you are all going. Great work by the way. It was lovely reading all your success stories.

PostNotInHaste · 27/09/2017 07:23

Well done Fireflies, it is a great feeling isn't it when you do it, especially if the 60 seconds were really hard at start. I'm also so not a runner and still can't quite believe I'm doing it, though most of the time it's more jogging.

R2 done this morning sporting a very fetching hi vis jacket bought for French holiday many moons ago and never taken out of packet. Looked like a twat but figured better twat than flat ! Am looking at led lights as possible alternative.

MoreProseccoNow · 27/09/2017 07:23

Down a pound despite no walks last week (only 3 runs) & not being careful with diet, plus being premenstrual - yay!

Am exactly 11st - if I can lose 1 more pound it will be amazing to be 10st something!

PostNotInHaste · 27/09/2017 10:51

Star Brilliant Prosecco Smile

MoreProseccoNow · 27/09/2017 11:07

Fireflies - that's great progress - it's amazing how quickly you build up on c25k.

I'll not manage to run tonight as my partner is away on business so will be home alone after work with the kids (8&4). But I have a low-calorie shove-it-in-the-oven meal.

My step count will be shocking (probably 5-6K) Shock

Firefries · 28/09/2017 02:33

Keep going everyone. Thanks Prosecco and Post.

PostNotInHaste · 30/09/2017 16:35

5-6k would have been average for me pre last November, things have changed! Sports bra not very supportive anymore so took the plunge and bought an Enell one which looks like an instrument of torture but I have hopes it will do the job.

DD's partner coming over soon to stay and said he'd like to join us in a run. Before they knew it DD and DS had agreed (I didn't give them much choice !) to come on a Parkrun in a couple of weeks. Their faces were like this Confused.

Think I need something warmer than a T shirt so looking at jackets and I understand from sporty friend I need a base layer, hat and gloves.

PostNotInHaste · 04/10/2017 10:08

Have printed barcodes for Parkrun. How are you all?
