Help me MN, I have 4 stone to lose and 10k debt to pay off!

Hello,

I've mentioned this on a couple of other threads but I hope you don't mind if I start my own thread as I have 2 really important goals this year and want to tackle them both, together.

This morning, I am 14 stone exactly. I'm 5'1' and have never even had kids! (I'm 33). I gave up booze 2 years ago so now time to tackle the cake/takeaway habit. If I lose 2lbs a month, I can be 10 stone in time for (hopefully!) going to Wimbledon this year.

I have taken some "before" shots of myself nekkid in the mirror and entered my weight on fitbit. And am stocking up on healthy food (low GI type idea). I also have a wee stepper machine in the living room so I need to get on that.

RE the debt - long story short this was due to slight overspending mounting up and then being out of work for a while. It's partly overdraft, rest credit card. I should be able to pay this off if I just stop filling my trolley with things I don't need, esp in Tesco. And if I stop buying clothes/random crap. So Lidl it is, going forward! I probably won't clear the lot but if I could get it under 5k that would be great.

So here we go any followers and support is much appreciated.

I wish you luck in whatever goals you have for yourself!

I look forward to Boxing Day 2017 when I should be slim, healthy and financially sound.

WE CAN DO THIS!

Great stuff, folks, let's do a roll-call this time next year where we list the debts paid off and the weight lost.

But in the meantime, let's keep this thread going as a sort of diary for all of us.

If I'm going to lose 2lbs a week, then I know I CAN'T cheat or fuck about this time. There is no room for wee slip-ups and all the messing about I normally do when I'm half-heartedly "trying" to lose weight. Pass the 90% dark chocolate though.

mind = focused Grin

Tectonic - no, I'm a bit of a minimalist tbh. I get rid of anything I don't use down the Oxfam.

I just need to not buy it in the first place!

Good luck. I'll join you!

Fartleks · 26/12/2016 14:09

I've similar goals. A stone to loose plus a massive financial overhaul in the new year

Fartleks · 26/12/2016 14:10

I like having less too. There's some kind of physical and mental freedom in not having clutter

Batbear · 26/12/2016 14:12

I'm in! I want to clear off some debt and nit add to it by joining weight loss clubs or doing mad diets.

I'm going to write down our goals and be meticulous in my financial planning. I did saving for Christmas this year which saved the debt getting worse.

BWatchWatcher · 26/12/2016 14:15

Me too! I am taking up running again and tackling the credit card debt!
I have 3k to get rid of.

AntiHop · 26/12/2016 14:16

I've lost a lot of weight with vegetarian low carb. I kept it off the years, with just maintenance level so not strict at all (plenty of days off). After having a baby and going back to work very sleep deprived, I put a lot back on and lost it with a mixture of 5:2 and Michael mosely blood sugar diet.

With debt, if you can, I'd try to get a low interest consolidation loan if you can. But then there's the temptation to build up the credit cards again so you have to be disciplined.

AgainPlease · 26/12/2016 14:20

Firstly, well done @ChickenVindaloo2 !! The most important step is realising you have a problem and want to take action.

  1. Weight: Join weight watchers or get your meals from Jane Plan or something like that. You will end up spending less money than if you were to go to the supermarket and you won't be tempted to buy sweet treats.

Get up an hour early and use this time to work out. It will be shit and exhausting at first, after 4 weeks it will be a habit and you will miss your exercise. Start slow: a brisk walk around the block, a beginners yoga class once a week, then a jog, then join a gym, do weight training etc. If you go too big too soon you will resent it.

Debt: see a debt advisor. Professional help will be much better than you trying to manage your own finances. They could even consolidate the debt in to one monthly payment - this will make life easier to manage.

Good luck!!!

Arkengarthdale · 26/12/2016 14:21

Me too please. 4 stone to lose by mid May. I've been ill, then lazy, so now need to find the motivation to stop drinking, massively reduce portion size, and move more. Actually moving at all would be good Grin

scaryclown · 26/12/2016 14:23

Christians Against Poverty will sort you out re debts..

Arkengarthdale · 26/12/2016 14:33

ChickenVindaloo2 I'm a similar shape! I want to do C25K and Kettle bells. I also have Jillian Michaels 30 day shred and Ripped in 30 - does anyone have a view in which Jillian DVD is better? Unfortunately I'm mid fifties so this is going to be hard.

I want to look good, feel good, be strong, be able to wear my gorgeous clothes again and be attractive to my DH again and have much more sex.

Crunchymum · 26/12/2016 14:39

OP - are you me?

I need to lose 4st, and clear aprox 10k credit card debt (possibly a bit more after the festive period)

Oh and I'm 5ft 1in too!!

(I'm a bit older - 36, have kids though and drink too much red wine!!)

tectonicplates · 26/12/2016 14:43

I'd recommend starting with 30 Day Shred until you build up your stamina. Ripped in 30 is faster paced and probably a bit much to be starting off with.

Crunchymum · 26/12/2016 14:48

Plan is Dry January and transfer balance to a zero interest CC with a direct debit out for the amount which will clear it before interest kicks in. Probably looking at £250 a month for 40 months?

I will then cut up everything barring my debit card.

The weightloss and debt clearance will be entwined for me. No more £8 bottles of Rioja, no more £20 take aways, no more impromptu microwave dinners from M&S as I don't fancy what we have in.

I am going to use MFP, walk 10k steps a day, stick to 1300 calories and cut out sugar.... it's like crack to me.

It feels very daunting and completely overwhelming when I think about it long term so I'm going to just do January and go from there.

Hoping I will be spurred on with a decent weightloss and saving some money.

ChickenVindaloo2 · 26/12/2016 14:55

Crunchy - I think I asked you the same thing on another thread! We must be like twins!

I tried 30 day shred a few years ago when I was 2 stone lighter and it nearly killed me - I couldn't walk for 2 days aftewards!

YY to the copious shagging I will be having with my new body!

(Just need to get back on Tinder!)

Forgot to say, don't deny yourself!

I'm a comfortable size 10 (even after a pregnancy) a size 8 when I am strict with myself or after a detox, and I'm 5"6. Not a day goes by where I don't have something sweet, be it a hot chocolate, a yogurt, a chocolate bar, some ice-cream. Just don't over do it!

I'm having Burger King tonight and I can't wait!! It's a big treat and DH and I have just spent an hour in the gym working up a sweat + appetite.

Be kind to yourself throughout this process. One day at a time :)

Look forward to checking back in on your updates!

ChickenVindaloo2 · 26/12/2016 16:10

AgainPlease - thanks. Something feels different this time. I think it's because I feel I'm not "young" anymore. So if not now, when? Although this year has been shit, there is never a perfect time, so it's time for less talk, more action!

I think the difference between slim people and fat people is that slim people have their treats but make up for it whereas fat people have a treat and then go "fuck it" and go crazy. I think that's the difference with your Burger King. So I need to me more like you!

I'm in :) Lost 14kg with myfitnesspal since Aug 2016 - OK I've put on 3kg over Christmas but I made a deliberate decision to have a break so I'm not too upset about it. I'm overweight instead of obese which is a really good feeling - my next goal is a healthy BMI as I really, really want to cut my diabetes risk.

Debt wise things are better than they used to be because I earn more - still got £8K to get rid of but £7K of that is a student loan so I don't worry about it too much. I would try to get out of the habit of thinking it's a good thing to give stuff to charity shops - it's a risk that you feel OK about spending more if you know you're going to give it away. Just not going into shops is the first step.

OneForTheRoadThen · 26/12/2016 16:42

I'm in! I've got 4 stone of baby weight to lose Blush

I don't need to pay off debts but I would love to save £10k towards a deposit

Notapodling · 26/12/2016 16:55

I'll join please! I'm the heaviest I've ever been so want to lose 3 stone just to get into the normal bmi category Blush
Also got £4000 to pay off.
Looks like there'll be a lot of us in this row boat Grin

specialsubject · 26/12/2016 17:03

2lb a week is a big challenge unless you really are continually eating now. Aim for a realistic 1lb a week and a lifestyle change to make it stay off.

No food is unhealthy per se. Some things are not food - do not eat sugary diet shakes, commercial smoothies, cereal bars, anything sold as 'diet', fizzy pop (canned toilet cleaner) or low fat food (=high sugar). Exercise = movement which is good, but the main thing is to reduce calorie intake. Doing something also means you aren't eating, which is what really works for me.

financially - cease all clothing buying, most people have plenty. If you find that when you are thinner, nothing fits, then fine. No takeaways, coffees in polluting cups, books (use library), magazines (all rubbish) makeup, toiletries until you run out.

food - if you are throwing anything except peelings and teabags you are wasting it and hence wasting money.

hammer down utilities with comparison sites (knock up a quick spreadsheet, remember that the quoted savings are lies; you need to look at unit rates and standing charges). ditto insurances.

good luck!

PinkSwimGoggles · 26/12/2016 17:30

you are spot on about slim people 'making up for treats'.
I do like a treat but then have it instead of a meal.
I have trained myself to only eat when I am feeling hungry until I'm not feeling hungry anymore - not full.
from 14st to 11 in 3 months. and kept it there for 3 years so far.

BananaFrittersForTea · 26/12/2016 17:44

Think about how easy it is to be lighter, think about much easier life will be with less debt- think of lots of examples (I.e. Don't focus on difficulties/challenges)
