Hi there I am starting Cambridge next week and have 3 1/4 stone to lose. Be good to chat, share stories and get support and inspiration from each other! Anyone else in the same boat? :)

I think you might be like philmena and find it drops off in chunks iykwim Grin have you measured yourself?

zeis10 · 27/06/2015 10:14

Well I haven't been measuring myself generally, as initially it was just too depressing! That said, my waist, this year, has gone from 43 to 39, to 37 1/2 at last measure. Haven't measured anything else and I am bit prone to bloat, so find that can sometimes be inaccurate. Confused

From this site...liking the sound of this theory..I'll go with this! Wink.

www.ketogenic-diet-resource.com/weight-loss-plateau.html

"Sometimes, the body may just be adjusting itself after a period of intense weight loss. I've read in several articles that the body will replace lost fat with water, as it adjusts to weight loss. Then all of sudden, it will release the extra water, and the dieter will experience a "whoosh" in weight loss - say 5 pounds in two days."

Here is some more...excerpt from "The Stubborn Fat Solution" by Lyle McDonald

A few weeks back I answered a question about Not Losing Fat at a 20% Deficit, What Should I Do? and among other things, one comment I made had to do with a water retention that often occurs during fat loss which can mask fat loss and make it appear as if the diet is not working. I also mentioned specifically that I had written (with a straight-face no less) about whooshes in The Stubborn Fat Solution, along with a related phenomenon which I call squishy fat.

In any case, to expand on that issue, I’m going to excerpt the chapter section from The Stubborn Fat Solution dealing with both phenomena. With that introduction, I give you (again, with a straight face)…

Of Whooshes and Squishy Fat

Before you freak out and think you’ve entered some weird Internet forum where people talk about stalls and whooshes, please bear with me; there’s actually some physiological rationale to what I’m going to discuss.

Many people have noted that fat loss is often discontinuous, that is it often happens in stops and starts. So you’ll be dieting and dieting and doing everything correctly with nothing to show for it. Then, boom, almost overnight, you drop 4 pounds and look leaner.

What’s going on? Back during my college days, one of my professors threw out the idea that after fat cells had been emptied of stored triglyceride, they would temporarily refill with water (glycerol attracts water, which might be part of the mechanism). So there would be no immediate change in size, body weight or appearance. Then, after some time frame, the water would get dropped, the fat cells would shrink. A weird way of looking at it might be that the fat loss suddenly becomes ‘apparent’. That is, the fat was emptied and burned off days or weeks ago but until the water is dropped, nothing appears to have happened.

For nearly 20 years I looked for research to support this, I was never sure if it was based on something from the 50’s or he just pulled it out of thin air as an explanation. Recently, one paper did suggest that visceral fat can fill up with water after massive weight loss but that’s about it.

Somewhat circumstantially, people using Bioimpedance body fat scales (which use hydration to estimate body fat levels) have noted that body fat appears to go up right before a big drop. This implicates water balance as the issue here.

As well, women, who have more problems with water retention, seem to have bigger issues with stalls and whooshes than men. Further, some individuals who have done dry carb-loads (high carbohydrate refeeds without drinking a lot of water) have seen them occur; presumably the body pulls water into the muscles and out of other tissues (fat cells). In lean individuals, appearance is often drastically improved with this approach, it doesn’t do much for those carrying a lot of fat.

I’d note that dry carb-loads suck because you’re so damn thirsty. Interestingly, even normal refeeds often work in this regards, perhaps the hormonal effect ‘tells’ the body to chill out and release some water. So not only do refeeds seem to improve stubborn fat mobilization the next day (as discussed above), they may help the body drop some water so that you can see what is happening.

Finally, many have reported whooshes following an evening which included alcohol. A mild diuretic, this would also tend to implicate water balance issues in the whoosh phenomenon.

I’d also note that this isn’t universal, lean dieters often see visual improvements on a day to day basis; a lot seems to depend on whether or not they tend to retain water in general. Folks who do have problems with water retention tend to have stalls and whooshes, those who don’t show nice consistent visual changes.

On a related topic, I wanted to discuss something else that often happens when people are getting very lean and dealing with stubborn body fat: the fat gets squishy, feeling almost like there are small marbles under the skin. Yes, very scientific, I know. That’s the best I can do.

As folks get very lean, down to the last pounds of fat, the skin and fat cells that are left will often change appearance and texture. It will look dimply (as the fat cells which are supporting the skin shrink and the skin isn’t supported) and feel squishy to the touch. This is bad in that it looks really weird, but it’s good because it means that the fat is going away. I have nothing truly profound to say about this topic, just realizes that it happens and usually indicates good things are happening.

hi Zeis

mine lasted 10 days, the 4lbs. nothing this morning.

I think I remember reading that theory a while ago & it makes sense doesn't it? annoying as it is! I also read that its far easier to gain wait again if you've already been fat as the far cells are there, ready and waiting to fill up again

keep going. I reckon you'll have a big loss soon.

we need a a vlcd shake emoticon!

lemonstartree · 27/06/2015 15:51

I think keep going. It's harder or some days, and it's harder when the scales song shift as a reward for the sacrifice... But .... You've lost a LOT already, and giving up now just means you won't reach the goals you have set ...

Flowers x

ThatsWotSheSaid · 27/06/2015 20:12

I tend to lose a pound a day for 4/5 days then nothing for 4/5 days or more. The average was 5lb a week for the first couple of weeks then it went down to 4lb now it's 3lb. But some weeks I lose nothing or just 1lb. Who knows why but without changing what I'm doing I get a lot of variation. Stick to it and you will lose weight IME.

twinkle183 · 27/06/2015 20:23

Hi ya girls... The ketogenic diet is what I am doing and the literature in that website that Zeis found is great!! I use that website a lot to keep me in check....

I don't feel like I have lost anything this week and feel really tired!!!!x

lilacblossomtime · 27/06/2015 22:36

What is everyone doing about cooking for family? I do most of the cooking at home and I feel like it might be a bit off putting.

zeis10 · 28/06/2015 07:04

Am 2lb down today!!! That is a total weight loss of 18 1/2 lbs in less than 5 weeks and now 2 stone lost overall this year..VERY pleased! Grin

Cooking I am finding not too bad, but I only have to cook/prepare food for my little girl. Have misjudged how much to buy, so a bit of wasted food...I give scraps to the dog, as far as possible. Am missing out a bit socially, but will make up for that over the summer, when we go on holiday. I keep lining up things i want to eat..not much that is interestingly, but really nice meals, or snacks, like when I go the Garden Centre where they have a really nice cafe, I will have a warm cheese scone and butter. Smile

well done zeis10 that's brilliant :D

DH is doing most of the cooking for him & the kids atm - we mostly share it anyway so it isn't a big deal.

Had a sneaky weigh in this morning - comfortably broken the 12st 7 barrier which I've been hovering around for weeks ... about 12st 2 this morning (after 2 full days). Definitely in ketosis.

I need to get to 11st 7 to be comfortably out of obese & into overweight - if I can do that in the 4 weeks of VLC that I'm planning that would be delighted. Anything more would be a huge bonus - 9st 10 gets me firmly into healthy weight but I'm happiest at 8st 7. Still quite a way to go!

DH is back to 5:2 today - he's gained a couple of kg of socialising weight. He's tall & very active so weight falls off him - it'll be gone within a week or so.

zeis10 · 28/06/2015 10:12

Boxofholes I know what you mean, just overweight and not obese..it's been a dream, until now! I am out of obese now and goal weight is now only 26lb away and feels doable! Looking forward to getting clothes out of my wardrobe that I have not worn since 2006!!

OP posts:
lemonstartree · 28/06/2015 10:58

How tall are you box ? Sounds like you are doing really well :-)

And Zeis isn't it great to look at your lovely clothes and know that soon you will be able to wear them again ! :-)

ThatsWotSheSaid · 28/06/2015 11:21

Morning :0)
Everyone is doing so well. I have good news too. My total loss now is 2 stone and I'm also now only 'over weight'. I'm not sure what my ideal weight is it's been a decade since I was happy with my size.
I don't think I could have done this without all of you guys so thank you.
I've been doing all the cooking for dp and the kids. Its tough to smell buttery toast and to throw away all the left overs I'd normally hover up. But I'm losing weight so it's all worth it.

boxofholes · 28/06/2015 12:15

ThatsWot well done you too :)

I'm 5'2 ... medium build I guess, big boobs & size 5 feet ... my skinny weight is 52kg (just over 8 stone), but really anything under 9 stone is great.

Can get my size 16 jeans on & off without undoing them now!

zeis10 · 28/06/2015 13:03

Thatswhatshesaid wow you too! I don't so much want to buy a whole new wardrobe, though sure I would buy some, as I have so many things that are still good to wear that I am looking forward to. Smile

OP posts:
lilacblossomtime · 28/06/2015 13:20

Yay for jeans fitting properlyStar

lemonstartree · 28/06/2015 13:43

I'm very similar to you Box; 5'2" and I would say I am big boned - wrists are quite thick for example. Feet size 6. At my heaviest I was about 12 1/2 stone.. That's a few years ago. ... This time I was 10 st 10 ish when I started Exante. Now 10 stone. The thinnest I have been since my 20s was about 8 st 12, I'm aiming for 9 stone as I think I start to look a bit gaunt below that - though I may review it when I get there... The immediate plan is to be as light as possible for my holiday ALONE with DP at the end of July :-)

thatswot well done to you too !!! I find it hard not eating the leftovers and smelling nice stuff too - but I am SO pleased with the weight loss I have stayed strong ....

boxofholes · 29/06/2015 09:19

still going ... it's not actually that hard because the food (shakes & bars) are so utterly disgusting ... it takes considerable will power to force them down.

I don't think I'm going to last longer than 3 weeks to be honest!

twinkle183 · 29/06/2015 09:25

Weigh in today.. Not that optismistic! I don't feel I have lost anything.. Hmm thinking of getting some of the exante stuff to shake things up a bit... Are they nice girls?? Or should I still keep going??? I do love my food hence why I am in this situation x HELP!!! Xx

ThatsWotSheSaid · 29/06/2015 09:45

Good luck twinkle. Don't worry if you haven't lost that just means a woosh is round the corner ;0)
I'm using real food (low carb 600-800 cals) I couldn't imagine eating all those shakes and bars. So hats off to those who have stuck to it.
Box - the first couple of weeks are hard but I bet by week three things will be easier.

zeis10 · 29/06/2015 10:16

Boxofholes what diet are you on Cambridge? Am finding Exante stuff quite tasty on the whole..love the bars!

OP posts:
lemonstartree · 29/06/2015 10:34

I think the exante stuff is ok

the shakes are quite palatable as long as you mix them in a proper mixer. The strawberry jam, lemon and cookie and cream bars are really nice. 0.2 lbs off today - slow going ATM ..

boxofholes · 29/06/2015 11:05

Exante :( ... I really don't like the textures, they taste okay I guess ... I'm going to use up what I've got then go onto real food I think (I'm used to very low cal meals from doing 5:2).

Anyway - down to 12st this morning :) only 4lbs to overweight! Then 2 stone more to healthy weight. Feeling quite determined atm.

Hang in there lemon, you've done really well!

lilacblossomtime · 29/06/2015 14:00

If it is the texture that you hate I have heard some people are baking the shakes into muffins and things. Take a look on the exante website forum and they have some ideas.
