Week 2 - Summer Low Carb Bootcamp - How was week 1 for you?!

BIWI · 06/05/2013 09:19

Hopefully you've all entered your weight in the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness and I hope that everyone managed a successful first week!

It probably wasn't the easiest week to start, what with the bank holiday, but never mind. It's a really good lesson that life and all its temptations will frequently get in the way.

Hope everyone has some sunshine today. It's perfect barbecue weather, and barbecue food is perfect for low carbing. And if anyone wants a good recipe, there's a lovely one for marinated chicken on the recipe thread

as far as i'm aware i don't think there's any particular exercise you need to avoid with this WOE, but in the first couple of weeks as you switch from burning predominantly carbs for fuel to predominantly fats for fuel it can be more difficult to exercise (i remember a sort of walking through treacle feeling as i tried to go for a run). it's a good idea to take it easy for this period, but things improve very quickly and you can be back to previous exercise levels without any problems

i don't know about taubes, but i think briffa and others advocate high-intensity interval training type exercise. and certainly any resistance training will help with your shape and toning, and this WOE includes plenty of fat and protein which helps to build muscle

i do the shred and running (in addition to long walks at the weekend), which works well for me, as it's a mixture of resistance / interval / endurance (i am an ex-cross country runner so the running is easy for me - i have to FORCE myself to do the shred and i loathe resistance work)

i tend to exercise in a 'fasted' state by the way - not in the sense that i'm doing 5:2 or whatever, just that i exercise without loading up on food beforehand.

so on days i'm at home i exercise before eating anything in the morning (so up to 16 hours without food), and on days i'm at work i exercise when i get home without eating anything since lunchtime (so about six hours without food)

i don't find i eat any more or less afterwards than i would have done if i hadn't exercised, and i don't feel lightheaded or low on energy or anything. this is what works for me, so just listen to your body really

so far for me today

b cheese omelete

l chicken lettuce cucumber tomato and may

D Fish in sauce, U really think i need an idiots guide to all this from someone

I thought i could eat bacon and ham freely so when you say not if processed do you mean not if pre packed but ok if bought fresh over counter-

Report
WillieWaggledagger · 07/05/2013 15:47

bacon and ham bought over the counter will still be processed - they are all cured meats so have preservatives and possibly flavourings added (some will be more artificial than others - e.g. salt may be the only preservative if you're lucky)

processed meat once per day, but not every day, would be fine

what sort of sauce are you having with your fish?

have you looked at the allowed foods list in the spreadsheet?

3lb down for me which is great as I actually started a five weeks ago(lost 7lb in first two weeks but nothing since this week)managed to overcome sugar cravings quite easily and don't really snack in between meals anymore more, feeling less hungry can go for a while in between meals, yesterday had late breakfast/ lunch large mushroom omelette then nothing till dinner which was tuna salad, three black coffees, and about five pints of water, today was small greek salad for breakfast, scrambled eggs for lunch, and now have no idea for dinner don't really fancy anything at the moment but might have some salad and meat and small cup of soup, and how long can you actually do bootcamp for, I do have loads of energy which is great, not getting that sleepy feeling which I normally get this time in the afternoon which is greatSmile

Back from Amsterdam yesterday, and no surprises, a bit heavier. I tried to be soooo good (actually, considering, I was very good) with only a few lattes and wine. Foodwise I was almost a saint.

We ate in Argentinian steak houses a couple of nights (there were quite a few), which were gorgeous, and very low carb.

Queenofdreams- if I am making pasta for dinner then I make the sauce and substitute the pasta with spinach on my plate- dead easy as it doesn't need cooked and the heat from the sauce wilts it. My feeling was that its the sauce I enjoy not the taste of plain pasta so why consume all those carbs for a taste I don't really enjoy.

am ignoring last week as I never really got off the ground with meal planning/food shopping and just ate and ate and ate and drank too much wine over the weekend Blush. But, I haven't put on any weight, and have kept off the 5lbs I lost at the end of the last bootcamp.

However, tomorrow is a new day, and I'm starting with a BAB, followed by a broccoli salad, and chicken with lots of buttered veg. Oh, and three litres of water, which I'm going to struggle to get through as DD has a hospital appointment in the afternoon, and that's not conducive to the drink-loo-drink-loo-drink-loo cycle. But, thinking positively, I can load up at breakfast, and then restart after we've finished at the hospital, so might not be that bad.

Dee - the 'old-style' Atkins diet used to sell itself on the basis that you could eat as much bacon as you liked. But whilst it's true that you can eat lots of bacon and still lose weight, Bootcamp (and most other low-carb WOEs) try to also focus on unprocessed, natural fresh foods. Bacon and ham are heavily processed and often contain nitrites which aren't great in large doses. They're not completely off-limits but please don't base your eating around them!

cas thanks for that tip, I might try it I think. I've also seen that some people use thin shavings of courgette instead of pasta which I might try next week.

Hello! I've been following this thread (and diet) all week and all your support, tips and menus have inspired me to join for real in the hope that I can finally escape the yo-yo diet trap. Like others have reported on here, it's hard to get your head around a high fat diet when everyone has been preaching low fat for years! I've have added myself to the spreadsheet ? 5lbs loss, so very pleased with that for first week. Wonder whether it could have been more if I'd not overdone the cheese and realised how carb heavy beetroot is (huge feta and beet salads a couple of times!) In fact, is it best to avoid feta in bootcamp? Read something last night which said hard cheese is best... (Apologies if you've already covered this)
Today:
B omelette with fried mushrooms
L beef wrapped asparagus spears with horseradish
D chicken, cauliflower cheese and courgette fritters
Thank you all for such a motivating thread and inspiring weight losses!

Queen, I often use shredded and steamed cabbage with pasta. Savoy is good for tomato-based sauces, white cabbage seems to go better with the creamy stuff like carbonara (but you could use whatever you've got of course!) I genuinely prefer it now; real pasta seems pappy and tasteless in comparison...

Well I managed to loose 3/4lb last week despite not having started bootcamp yet. I knew that there was too much going on to start until this week. I did try to be as good as I could and thankfully it showed. Result!
we had a BBQ on Sunday and leftovers for dinner last night - very healthy and bootcamp for me as I had mashed swede to go with the meat and veg.
I justs need someone to find me a pasta substitute that is NOT courgette strips (Blearh!) and recipies that DO NOT have celariac, courgette, peppers, marrow, cucumber etc in them. They may be low carb but they are the devils work! Grin

i listen you can get low carb pasta from Japanese shops but it is a bit boingy - I tried it then decided not to bother again.

berryfreeze your post made me laugh - I can see all your extra energy in it.

So far today, I've had 2 coffees (1 with cream, 1 decaf black) and a gallon of water , plus:

L: chicken salad with mayo and avocado, sm bowl of FF greek yog
S: 2x portabella mushrooms grilled with a scant tablespoon bolognese sauce and cheese on top
D: pan fried salmon with buttered broccoli

But I am seriously craving something sweet! What is wrong with me?! I know bootcamp is all about retraining our tastebuds, but I'm overcoming years of sugar addiction here! Wink Any suggestions before I sniff the jar of cocoa powder like an addict and frighten the kids?
