Week 7 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - Where We Get Tough!

Morning campers

Here is the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

This week sees the start of Ubercamp. This is entirely optional, by the way!

The idea is that we have three very strict days, keeping our carbs under 20g each day and consuming no dairy.

If you want to take part, I have put together three days' worth of meals as a guide - one which includes eggs and one which is an egg-free plan for those of you who don't like eggs. I'll also do one today which is purely fish-based.

As well as the meal plans, I've also written shopping lists and some recipes, where necessary, and the lovely Willie has put these on the spreadsheet - just look at the tabs at the bottom.

Only 1 pound loss this week, but I'm fine with that as it is still going in the right direction, plus I had a whoosh of 3 pounds last week.

Another week, another pound off. Bit disappointed as I thought I had been pretty hardcore this week. Still 3.3lbs to go until I can do my four-stone-off dance of joy. Will keep on keeping on.

Very well done to so many inspirational stories on the last thread, especially the lady who is well on the way to losing 10 stones.

I was a bit stuck last week (but there appeared to be a digestive component to this!)

I am a bit reluctant to stop eating berries as they are full of vitamins and minerals that are very good for you.

However, I have been a bit more careful this week, and have lost about 1lb I think. (I wonder whether I should get more accurate scales).

I am not set up for the uber low carb days but will give this some thought for over the next week or so, could I fit it in.

Very impressed by BIWI's efforts, I feel very spoilt and cared for.

This is great for me. I am about the weight now that I was when I was 16! That is, a bit over 12 stone. (I don't have the 24 inch waist though). I then did a low fat and low carb diet effectively, plus lots of cycling, and lost 2 stone. I found that maintaining a BMI of 19 or 20 wasn't good for my underlying chest problems though, so let myself gain weight up to around BMI 25, and have been somewhere from 25-30 ever since. It is about 20 years since my weight was down to what it is now and I am getting lots of compliments which is great.

Also, I used to be a very small waisted pear, and I am now more of an hour glass, and I am quite enjoying that (I am breast feeding at the mo which is another factor in that).

Feeling very pleased about how things are going right now!

Im staying the same again, but Im happy and enjoying this still.

Was Ubercamp mentioned on the old thread? Only I wasnt on that one much and so have already meal planned and shopped for this week, and a few meals contain cheese and butter. I cant afford to change everything around now so I'll just do what I can and start by switching to black coffee! Maybe if I cut down portion sizes of the parts that contain dairy? Or would that not be hardcore enough?

Hope you all have a good day Smile

sweeteners/diet drinks causing weight gain - if I understand correctly, they do this because they cause you to continue to have a sweet tooth/have cravings so you continue to choose to eat inappropriate unhealthy foods.

Which is linked to the reason the pill or certain contraceptives cause weight gain because they cause the person to have cravings to eat more of the wrong stuff which leads to weight gain.

But if you are disciplined enough not to put those those foods in your mouth, despite being on the pill, or drinking diet drinks/having sweeteners, does it follow that you will not gain weight even if you carry on with those things?

This is a genuine question - I am curious as to whether, other than the cravings they cause, is there another reason why these things cause a person to gain?

I thought sweeteners cause an isulin response - so it goes looking for sugar to convert to energy/glucogen stores?

I didn't know that about the pill - I had the opposite effect. I was on the pill for decades, and sts weight even after 3 dc. But when i changed the contraceptive, i put weight on. It did co-incide with my marriage breakup tho, and i was out on the town a lot more, and drinking wine/beer/cider almost every day. That's probably a cause too, I think Grin

I've updated my stats on the spreadsheet (I think I did it right) and am down 5.7 lbs from a week ago. I'm not silly enough to think this is all weight (I'm sure about 5lbs of it is water!) but I'm pleased nonetheless. I made Meatzza from Nigellissima last night (recipe on her website) and the kids loved it and it was so low-carb friendly. I highly recommend it.

Thanks to BWIW for the spreadsheet and meal plans. Hope everyone has a great week

The diet doctor link was about his experiment drinking Pepsi Max. His insulin levels didn't go up, but his ketone production dropped (I think).

herecomesthsun you can get all your vitamins and minerals from vegetables and salad. No need for fruit.

Captain - relationship break down is a well known, scientifically proven, weight gain factor. Grin

i suspect the sweeteners and cravings/insulin response etc will vary from person to person (based on my own opinion rather than extensive research!). likewise others may be fine to consume them from a weight loss POV, though obviously not so good from a health POV

Biwi - try and catch up with the discussion on radio 2 with Jeremyv vine. It started at 12 and the discussion was on why sugary drinks should be more heavily taxed as they are as lethal as cocaine! It was a really good discussion. Dh said I should phone in and tell them I had been sugar free since jan 7. I was too shy tho!

BIWI You must be psychic doing a fish menu! I opened the fridge this morning and discovered that DH has, in his attempts to empty the freezer in the garage which we use as an extra one, accidentally defrosted a whole side of salmon so I will be eating a lot of fish!

I can recommend the little salmon fritters from the IPD book.

I am a bit disappointed this morning. I weigh on a Friday and looked to have lost another 2lb by last Fri but, following the indian meal and despite being really strict, I have put on 1lb a day every day since so now appear to be 3lb heavier! I have split the difference optimistically and have put myself down as a 1lb loss (based on Friday) and will keep being good this week until the birthday when I shall have a day off.

Oh well, onwards and downwards as they say!

I honestly don't think we should get hung up on the weight loss as it fluctuates so much. Not a morsel of sugar has passed my lips nor have I cheated and thought sod it! I got down to 178lb 2 weeks ago but am 180 lbs again today but do not look at that as a weight gain.

Ruprekt · 18/02/2013 13:12

Try not to get too hung up on weight loss and gain as it fluctuates so much on this woe.

you're right ruprekt, it's a good attitude to have. also i've found that i look better with this woe at particular weights than when i've been at that weight in the past because i'm less bloated, skin looks better etc etc

Another 2lb this week - that's 19lb in total! :) I'm down to 11stone 11lb.

I've been so successful that dh, who wants to lose about a stone has decided to join us! Grin He wants to be called Handsomebird and not Handsomecock as someone suggested Wink - could someone please add him to the sreadsheet. He's weighed in this morning at 11 stone 3lb the bastard is lighter than me Hmm

He went on a carbfest this weekend and is not looking forward to two weeks without no alcohol at all and no crisps, toast, chips.... But I'm sure he will be pleased with the results even if I haven't quite managed to get through to him that it is a WOE and he can't just lose the weight and then go back to enjoying all the crisps etc To be fair, the wine will be an issue as he has a currently hobby wine business and is also studying to be a Master of Wine.

I got weighed this morning and have given away 2lb this week but I hadn't reached a goal I'd hoped to (one stone gone), [though I teetered on the edge of another! (under x stone)], so I was a bit 'grrr', but next to the scales (which aren't in the bathroom!) are some 1.5kg/3lb bags of salt (for outside ice, not eating!) and I picked one up, then another, then another & a half used one - they were bloody heavy!! That is the weight I have said good-bye to this last month! Shock 2lb more and it's a stone! Grin I have plenty of others say good-bye to though, so those of you that are significantly lighter you have achieved the same or better! Grin

Would it be completely mad to buy loads more of them when they're on special in a couple of weeks so I can keep doing this and physically feel the weight that has gone?? ConfusedGrin

I stopped saying lose/lost in regard to weight a while ago, I read somewhere that you always sub-consciously keep looking for things you have lost and trying to get them back - who knows if that's right or not, but not taking any chances!! :)

2lbs off for me - thats 8lbs in 3 weeks!

best of all I am still really enjoying the food. I've decided to avoid cream though, as whenever I have it I crave something sugary to have with it.

Have made a bit of a pig of myself this lunch time. We had half of the BinaBinaB left and I cut all the stuffing off it, and the sugary glaze and ate the whole remainder in between lettuce leaves with mayo. And the small bowl of leftover creamy sprouts and leeks. Am stuffed.

had a good workout at the gym this morning and am doing well with my water today so far.

having these for tea, with veg, they are yummy and so easy. lazy

Oooh yummy... made the crackers and flaxseed bread from the recipe thread and had some of them with cheese and pate for lunch. Was a bit dubious about the bread as it smelt a bit 'fishy'(?) but stuck it under the grill with some cheese on and it was lovely. Is it supposed to rise though?

I think I'm still getting over the illnesses I've had over the past month as I felt a bit funny earlier but I resisted getting junk for lunch so I'm happy :)
