Week 7 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - Where We Get Tough!

Morning campers

Here is the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

This week sees the start of Ubercamp. This is entirely optional, by the way!

The idea is that we have three very strict days, keeping our carbs under 20g each day and consuming no dairy.

If you want to take part, I have put together three days' worth of meals as a guide - one which includes eggs and one which is an egg-free plan for those of you who don't like eggs. I'll also do one today which is purely fish-based.

As well as the meal plans, I've also written shopping lists and some recipes, where necessary, and the lovely Willie has put these on the spreadsheet - just look at the tabs at the bottom.

Oh and for all who were talking about kids and low carbing, there is a good diet that I did for maintenance where you focus on keeping low carb but not necessarily actually in ketosis - instead the focus is on low GL (Glycemic Load) food - takes GI a step further and looks at total volume of sugar/how quickly it releases rather than just the GI value - eg watermelon has quite high GI, but is low GL because most of it is water so the actual volume of sugar consumed is quite low.

So for example a bit of pasta would be allowed, but it would be less than a quarter of the meal (an adult would have no more than a ramekin of pasta ie you might start with a salad/soup, or have more veg/salad on the side of the pasta), and ideally wholemeal. You could have one slice of bread, but only wholemeal/pumpernickel etc. And any carbs have to be combined with protein, not just veg. It was very good for reintroducing some carbs without putting on weight and staying healthy.

By Patrick Holford. This is the book that is specifically aimed at kids (he has loads with different twists, eg diabetes, simple version, more detailed version, cookbooks, etc etc): www.amazon.co.uk/Smart-Food-For-Kids-recipes/dp/0749953454/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1361712193&sr=8-2

Just had cauliflower garlic bread Yum! looking forward to making pizza using the same base.

I'd love ds to low carb but he has aspergers and food must be beige!Grin

Yama · 24/02/2013 13:48

Welcome to Mary and Jake.

Jake - just ride out the carb flu. Once you are through it, you will feel amazing. I promise. Up the water. I found spinach lessened the pain in my legs due to its magnesium.

Dh and I had a rare night out last night. I had seared halibut with king scallops and brandy cream. The waitress gave me this face Confused when I asked for salad instead of chips. The salad was great. I also had the cheeseboard minus the biscuits. Couldn't finish it. Oh, and we shared a bottle of red and a vat of water.

Up a lb this morning but totally worth it to get out.

There is a beef and turnip stew slowly simmering in the oven for dinner later. I should really round up the troops and get out for a walk but the sofa is o so comfy. Smile

BIWI · 24/02/2013 13:53

thekitchenfairy - try really hard not to snack! If you have to, then what about olives? Try drinking some water before you eat, to see if that 'takes the edge off'.

choos well done!!! I can feel your enthusiasm seeping out if every word in your post! I love the idea of you packing vegetables in your suitcase!!!

littlermissstan · 24/02/2013 14:32

Ooh, lots to catch up on! Happy birthday thekitchenfairy and welcome to the newbies.

Just home from big family wedding weekend, a couple of small carb slip ups - half a Yorkshire pudding, a few bites of wedding cake I shared with my niece and half a slice of toast this morning, but am pretty pleased with that - no brown buffet, no birthday cake (my niece is 7 today as well as the wedding!). Too much to drink I'm sure but for once really felt in control of my eating. It helped that the reception was in the pub where the groom is head chef and had the most amazing carvery which was a LC dream - beautiful beef and pork and sides of red and green cabbage, cauliflower cheese and creamed leeks.

Hope everyone has had just as nice a weekend!

NoelHeadbands · 24/02/2013 14:41

Happy Sunday everyone

Missed 100's of posts it seems, bu best wishes to those with recent birthdays and welcome new folks.

Going to really low carb this week as I'm just not shifting the pounds. I'm not 'cheating' as such, I think it's just the carb creep and possibly a lot of dairy (although that hasn't hindered before).

I'm just going to finish these sugar free Werthers toffees this afternoon first....Blush

ChoosandChipsandSealingWax · 24/02/2013 14:53

Thanks MrsHP! Yes feeling very enthusiastic right now - have never before been on holiday and managed to lose weight, but... Hmm

I really don't think I deserved the weight loss what with the amount of wine I shipped, so am sure things will readjust over the next week (although I'm hoping that BIWI's "there's no such thing as a false low reading" will ultimately come true) - am going straight back onto ultra strict Ubercamp tomorrow.

slummy - that cauliflower garlic bread looks amaazing - definitely going to try that once out of Ubercamp.

Glad you had a lovely wedding littlemiss and well done for resisting most of the carbicide.

WillieWaggledagger · 24/02/2013 15:07

welcome ishallwearmidnight! leftovers are a favourite lunch of mine (though i can happily eat the same meal for days on end!)

choos that low carb tartiflette sounds fabulous

BlackAffronted · 24/02/2013 16:28

What could have been a relatively low carb weekend turned out to be anything but. My inner gobbler turned me into a sugary twat. I deserve every single pound that I have probably gained Grin

Had a fab weekend though, off to catch up on the thread & see whats been going on.

ChoosandChipsandSealingWax · 24/02/2013 16:29

Yes the tartiflette was great.

I forgot to say that strictly speaking tartiflette has bacon/lardons too - I just didn't as DH is veggie.

And we didn't have an oven so I just did in a pan, but you can deglaze with a tiny splash of wine then put into oven dish and add cream and top with reblochon:

Iamaslummymummy · 24/02/2013 16:37

Choos which cheese could you sub if you couldn't get reblochon or is it relatively easy to get?

BlackAffronted · 24/02/2013 17:12

Happy birthday to my evil twin TimidViper and also to TheKitchenFairy! Mine isnt until Wednesday though.

Feeling like crap, whilst my weekend was lovely, the carb hit has made me feel so ill. Cant leave the toilet, stomach cramps, headache. Dont anyone offer me sympathy - I deserve it! Grin

BlackAffronted · 24/02/2013 17:12

slummymummy, I can never find it, and would love to know what to sub it with too!

BIWI · 24/02/2013 17:37

Sainsbury and Waitrose both sell Reblochon.

Sorry to hear you're not feeling great, BlackAffronted it really wasn't worth it, was it?!

ChoosandChipsandSealingWax · 24/02/2013 17:40

Sorry to hear you're feeling rubbish black - cross-posted with you earlier - hope you at least had a lovely time at the time!

I would try fontina or taleggio or raclette if possible but they are not necessarily any easier to get (we were in the mountains in France so it was easy to get there but not here except in bigger branches of waitrose, M&S etc and also if you are a cheese lover I think there are various cheese-ordering websites - not cheap though, so on,y for a real treat) - Brie, Camembert, port salut, emmental, gruyere, pont leveque (poss too gritty?) could all also give a good flavour.

Iamaslummymummy · 24/02/2013 17:55

Will go on a cheese hunt next weekGrin

JakeBullet · 24/02/2013 18:00

Lerdammer is just 0.1g of carbs per slice.....whoop whoop.

Had my Mums roast dinner today but yoghurt for breakfast and just had a slice of cheese. In prep for tomorrow when I start properly....

BlackAffronted · 24/02/2013 18:35

Not worth it at all!

WillieWaggledagger · 24/02/2013 18:43

BING BONG - ANNOUNCEMENT

biggest loser of the week: firsttimepig
Biggest loser so far: Dangerousmouse
biggest %age loser so far: gloriafloria

JakeBullet · 24/02/2013 18:59

Do I have to PM my weight to go n a spreadsheet? Grin

It is appalling.....or was when I weighed in yesterday.....will be interested to see the difference after one week with this way of eating.

Doshusallie · 24/02/2013 19:35

3 boiled eggs, and a hunk of cheese
Lettuce leaf sandwiches of coleslaw, cheese, ham, smoked sausage, 2 handfuls of almonds
2 cocktail sausages at kids party
An enormous plate of roast lamb, cabbage and leek, broccoli and sprouts. And had seconds of all that. Blush
2 glasses of red.

Doshusallie · 24/02/2013 19:41

Myfitnesspal has that lot at 35g carbs, but I think my portions of veg would actually make it higher. Mfp has that veg at a very high carb count, I wonder if that is actually right? Hmm

Doshusallie · 24/02/2013 19:42

And I swam a mile this afternoon.
