Week 4 - New Year Bootcamp - Where We Really Get Going

BIWI · 28/01/2013 08:55

Morning all!

Quick post from me as I have to go to work. Damn that RL!

Come and confess all on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

Remember that in this week, it is still likely that you may see very little or even no loss. This is entirely normal and will happen no matter how well you have been following Bootcamp rules

It sounds, though, like some of you are eager to report losses anyway, so that's brilliant!

However, there's been a lot of falling off the wagon recently, so can I suggest that we really get focused in this week and make sure that we don't allow the carbs to creep back into the diet? From here on, we're only really going to see losses of around 1-2lbs a week, so let's not sabotage things.

Coldethyl just a thought...

I was feeling like that a lot last week, cramps, wobbly, faint and thirsty, but not wanting to drink..I have since exploded into some utterly rubbish shivery, cold... Not v nice at all and can barely speak, but there are lots of viruses feeding since it warmed up a few degrees...

thenightsky · 03/02/2013 10:14

Made the fish pie with cauliflower mash from the recipe thread last night, it was amazingly tasty and VERY filling. Even DH didn't want chips or other carby-ness with it.

Do any of you lot shop in Sainsburys in Lincoln? I went in there yesterday and there was not one packet of milled linseed left in the place, they were low on double cream and FF Total and I got the last iceberg lettuce! Angry

thenightsky · 03/02/2013 10:15

Oh.. and no bloody celariac either!

Yama · 03/02/2013 10:17

Coldethel - I've been prone to fainting since having the dc.

Like Valdeeves, I eat spinach most days, eat lots of meat and add salt to my food.

If you pop over the the reading list on the spreadsheet, there are loads of books and websites well worth a read. Dh is reading 'The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living' and the first thing he said was about adding sodium to diet. I add to say that I already knew that because of one of the blogs I'd read that BIWI linked to aaages ago.

Yama · 03/02/2013 10:21

This was the blog about sodium.

BIWI · 03/02/2013 10:27

The other book you need is The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance

Valdeeves - sugar is carbohydrate though! It's the level of carbs that you eat that will keep you in ketosis.

coldethyl - that's not good if you're fainting/cramping, and suggests that something is seriously wrong with what you're eating. By now, you should be used to drinking the amount of water, and 2.4 litres is not that excessive.

The first thing I would say would be salt - do you cook with it? Do you add it to your food?

Second, are you eating enough? It's a common problem - everyone associates dieting with teeny tiny portions, which isn't necessary on this WOE.

What about the electrolytes? As well as sodium, you should be eating sufficient foods to get enough potassium and magnesium. Like you, I prefer to get what I need from food - things like salmon, avocado and spinach are all good sources of these.

If you have been suffering, though, as a short term measure I would DEFINITELY suggest that you look at supplementation, to get you back to normal

Are you eating enough fat? You say you've been pushing your veggies up at the expense of meat - this could also mean that you aren't eating enough fat.

You don't have to buy expensive cuts of meat - shin of beef, breast of lamb, chicken thighs, pork belly are all relatively inexpensive, and higher in fat.

And lastly, list out for me what you have both been eating over the last week or so, please - so we can see if there's anything else.

This is not a WOE that should cause you any problems, but (like any other) it has to be done correctly.

Just to say OMG to celariac chips and to cauliflower soup, both absolutely yum. Not a fan of curry powder, so used cumin in the soup and mild chilli powder on celariac chips.

Made low carb fish and chips last night, coating fish in egg then mixture of flaxseed and parmesan, didn't really work TBH so won't bother doing that again. Thought I'd had a really virtuous low carb meal, but according to MFP meal added up to 19g carbs! (cauliflower soup, homemade coleslaw, fish, celariac chips and green salad). Rest of the day was very low carb though.

Feeling much more positive now about sticking to this, but on nights next few days which is hard to LC (according to what I've read insulin levels rise in night shift workers so I guess it's because blood sugar is a bit low). Also I always take in snacks for my team, any ideas for low carb options? can't exactly provide hardboiled eggs!

Just marking my place as this is a fast moving thread.

TheEarlyBird · 03/02/2013 12:27

Marking my place - think I may have derailed my loss this week with alcohol. And - I just ate a fruit pastille by mistake Blush

Jacaqueen · 03/02/2013 12:27

Hi everyone.

I am never going to have time to go back and read all the posts I have missed over the past few days so apologies for not responding.

The funeral went as well as can be expected. It really did just all go like clockwork. DH got very emotional which was very moving to watch. I have fallen in love with him all over again as these past few weeks have brought us closer together than we have ever been over the past 25 years together.

Ok pass the bucket, enough of all this lovey dovey talk.

The scales are up a few pounds which is not surprising as lots of alcohol has been had over the past few days. Not to mention having to eat the food that was supplied. A few strict days should see that put right.

NoveltySlippers · 03/02/2013 12:29

Okay people - Novelty's fallen off the bloody wagon again.

My mum's visiting this weekend and although she's the minuscule size of 118 lb, she doesn't half put away her food. (I clearly didn't inherit her side of the family's genes.)

Still struggling with willpower 'ishoos' clearly, as I started off Sunday brekkie all saintly with bacon and eggs, but then gave in when I saw her munching toast (wholemeal...but still) and MARMALADE.

Then came out the pineapple and mango chunks she'd bought from the station for mid-morning snack. Then the oatcakes. Argh.

See, to others, those are still 'healthy snacks'. But in fact they're insulin spiking little gremlins (yes, I'm talking about you Mr Pineapple and Mr Mango). The marmalade clearly told my system that all bets were off, and I couldn't didn't resist.

Fully expecting a gain tomorrow after that little splurge. Hope I can resist any further co-snacking today.

NoveltySlippers · 03/02/2013 12:30

Jac so lovely to hear that about you and your DH!

Glad the funeral went okay Thanks

BlackAffronted · 03/02/2013 12:40

PJ lover, how abouttaking roasted chicken thighs or drumsticks? You coudl even make tandoori falvoured, or satay, to make them interesting. Or bacon wrapped halloumi bites? Or ham & cheese cubes? Cucumber & carrot sticks with a sour cream dip? Lower carb nuts? Cold sausages? Tuna mayo lettuce wraps?

Breakfast for me was 2 slices of ham. Lunch is a big bowl of broccoli & courgette soup and a bit of chicken. DH is making mince & tatties for tea tonight, I will have my mince with buttery mashed neeps though.

BlackAffronted · 03/02/2013 12:46

Jac Thanks what a lovely thing for you & DH in such a tragic time :( Hold on to that togetherness.

timidviper · 03/02/2013 14:14

Jac Glad the funeral went well and that there has been something positive resulting from your loss.

I am now back on track but not quite in the groove yet if you know what I mean. I still feel hungry and a bit below par but I'm sure I'll get through it.

pyjamalover · 03/02/2013 14:25

Jac that's such a lovely thing to write.

Blackaffronted good ideas, will do the veg sticks and dip am too lazy/busy for the other ideas

Novelty never mind, I messed up on friday and have comforted myself with the thought that everyone finds this hard sometimes, even john briffa mentioned in his webchat that biscuits are like crack cocaine to him, and I've seen in other low carb blogs about falling off the wagon.

out of interest was looking at the forums on MFP last week, the majority on it are VERY anti low carb, why have so few people noticed that everything in the shops is low fat, but people are getting fatter?

NoveltySlippers · 03/02/2013 14:32

Pyjamalover - Grin at Briffa's biscuits-as-crack-cocaine comment!

Doshusallie · 03/02/2013 14:40

Jac that is lovely about your dh and you, so glad.

Went out for dinner last night and the hostess had done chilli con carne - but she made me broccolli to go with it and served a delish cheese board for afters as well as banoffee pie which I resisted. She had even made the breakfast frittatas as a starter. I love her. Grin. I did have too many nuts though, and a couple of cheese thin crackers and my body weight in wine, gin and amaretto but could have been alot worse!!!

3 bacon 2 egg for brekkie, lots of water, and just had cucumber, Brie, olives, 2 boiled eggs and some Greek yoghurt for lunch.

Off to look for the cauliflower soup recipe, is it in the low carb section?

JustasmallGless · 03/02/2013 14:41

Hi Jac - that made me well up (you know how emotional I get!) I am glad that something positive has come from your loss and that funeral went as well as can be hoped for.

Novelty - just pick yourself right back up again and have a couple of superstrict days and tons of water.

Blush
JustasmallGless · 03/02/2013 14:42

Dosh - can I have your friend please. That sounds fab from a LC point of view excepting all the alcohol of course

I'm on nil by mouth so far today

Valdeeves · 03/02/2013 15:22

Anybody on this thread live in West Berks?

Valdeeves · 03/02/2013 15:22

I want to wave at someone!

Valdeeves · 03/02/2013 15:34

Thanks BIWI for that answer.
