Week 4 - Little Black Dress Low Carb Bootcamp - where the going gets tough ...

Morning all!

Come and confess all on the Spreadsheet of Wonderfulness

By now, you may be finding it tough going. The weight loss is nothing like it was in the first couple of weeks. In fact, you may even have seen the scales show a gain.

This is quite normal at this stage, as your body is shifting/has shifted into fat-burning mode, and you are now burning only fat. No more water loss. Long-term, sustainable weight loss is likely to settle at 1-2lbs per week.

By now, though, you should be more used to this WOE, and it should seem a more normal way to eat. Hopefully you've sorted out how to plan for times when you're out and about, and have a few strategies up your sleeve for the unexpected. And hopefully you are also better at knowing what does and doesn't work for you.

Here's to a good week to us all. Smile

Just checked - robinsons no added sugar lemon squash is practically nothing at all 0.7 or something per 100ml, waitrose double concentrate is slightly more in orange and again slightly more 2.7/100 ml in apple and blackcurrant but you only need the teensiest squash... What make do you have?

Lavendersbluedillydilly1969 · 28/10/2012 09:20

My 2.3 dd has just decided she wants to wear knickers not nappies so am trying not to be tempted by the chocolate buttons I am bribing her with to sit on the potty. It's hard because they are an old favourite but do far have sniffed them (how sad is that) but not eaten any.
Had eggs, bacon and mushrooms for breakfast and celebrating as a pound down since yesterday.

MrsHerculePoirot · 28/10/2012 09:27

Go lavenders DD! And Lavender for being strong on the choc buttons!

AuntieMaggie · 28/10/2012 09:40

NSSS sending you a hug. these ladies speak sense so listen to them. you can do it and you will. but be kind to yourself.

toomuch i felt awful when I had pizza pre october bootcamp and found a lot of sugary stuff too sweet. when i want something sweet now its natural sweetness of fresh fruit or just a mouthful of the other crap. that in itself is an achievement in my book :)

Lavendersbluedillydilly1969 · 28/10/2012 10:27

Thanks Mrs HP it's taking all my willpower not to have just one.
Just tried coconut oil in a cup of tea with cream as read this is a popular way to take it. It's truly horrible, it just melts into a layer of oil on top of the tea and made me feel sick. Put that one down to experience I think. Am getting used to just eating it off the spoon actually, it's not too bad.
Have got to get creative with some beef mince and a huge cauliflower and try to make a tasty dinner for later, unfortunately creative cooking is not a strength.

MrsHerculePoirot · 28/10/2012 10:46

Shepherds pie with Cauli mash on top?

Willowisp · 28/10/2012 10:52

Morning, I'm still around, doing my own version of low carb Wink

I only have a few lbs to lose really, but find I'm really enjoying not eatasmara many carbs - fish etc & salad + fried onions/pepper/courgettet for lunch, whereas the sandwiches i was previously eating made me feel very tired.

I'm wondering if anyone is feeling really hungry though ? Not so much a gnaring tummy rumble, but a 'I'm really empty, shovel loads of food in me' ? Perhaps its an unrecognized craving ?

Also missing doing a big carb fueled poos Blush...taking linseeds daily & also having thr dukan galette for breakie...which has a bit of a tendency to sit like a brick in my belly...

NewStartSameStory · 28/10/2012 11:12

MrsHP - you are quite right. I double checked the levels of carb, 2.7 for blackcurrent and apple and 1.0ish can't recall exact just lower then the other Not sure how but i was thinking but the glass holds more like xml thus multiple that by the figure given and that is a hell of a lot of carbs. which is would be but if that is the figure given for the concentrate and not the made up squash it is a whole different thing isnt it..

Foods i find easy to eat and consider meals normally are all on the banned list and out of respect for the others I shall avoid posting exact details but safe to say the only nutritional value in most would just be carbs.

Have got the bits for a cottage pie to finish making and put through oven for tea tonight. Added an extra and and some leek to my scrambled egg this morning. Extra sleep has helped but more still needed.

Livelongandprosper · 28/10/2012 11:34

I am back from two weeks in Turkey and have put on 7lbs. I had a fantastic time but there was no mumsnet and I have been looking forward to catching up with what you've all been up to. Will weigh in tomorrow.

Livelongandprosper · 28/10/2012 11:36

p.s. It was an activity holiday so I am hoping some of my weight gain is muscle!

BigBroomstickBIWI · 28/10/2012 11:50

Oooh - welcome back!

BigBroomstickBIWI · 28/10/2012 12:09

NewStart - thank you for confiding in us. That is courageous of you. I hope very much that we can help you through all this.

TooMuch - it could be the sugar, but more likely to be the wheat/gluten from the flour in the cake I would have thought.

We had friends round for dinner last night, and I knew it was going to be an 'off the wagon' kind of evening. I kept it as low carb as I could, but did end up eating the dessert and falling head face into the box of Hotel Chocolat selectionBlush

I made a lovely dessert that was probably reasonably low carb - a sort of very soft chocolate mousse, that was made with dark chocolate (85% cocoa), milk, eggs, coffee and raspberry liqueur. I must try and work out how many carbs were in it, but I suspect it wasn't too bad - and had nothing artificial in it, which is also a concern of mine.

I also made a side dish, to go with roast lamb, of individual tartiflettes, but made with celeriac, and they were really lovely

adapted from Rachel Khoo's recipe

Lots of lovely, expensive wine (friends are connoisseur collectors, who always bring something fabulous), but thankfully I switched to water a couple of hours or so before I went to bed (at 3.00am!), so I don't feel bad at all this morning. Although I'm very glad I cancelled my personal training session!

BIWI sounds lovely.
Mum did lamb shanks last night but with mash, carrots and broccoli

I skipped the mash but had to have carrots.
Bacon egg and mushrooms for brekkie
There is a buffet lunch and my auntie is coming who also low carbs but doesn't eat dairy either so looking forward to comparing recipes with her!
Tea will be leftovers and salad. Was hoping for a big walk on the beach but its chucking it down. Will have to get the wellies on after lunch and wrap up

not mentioning large quantities of vodka consumed at the pub but had a great time with DH

EwanHoozami · 28/10/2012 12:31

BIWI 3am - that's rock n' roll Grin and that raspberry mousse sounds delicious.

Not looking forward to weigh-in tomorrow. Sleep deprivation has reached crisis point in the Hoozami house and I fear my body is 60% coffee-and-cream where it should be water.

Willowisp I haven't felt really 'hungry' for weeks. When I go off-plan and pick it's out of boredom and/or tiredness rather than that empty-belly hunger.

MrsHerculePoirot · 28/10/2012 12:39

Willow I also haven't felt really hungry - sometimes I have forgotten to eat lunch and then get hungry earlier than tea time, but other than that I haven't felt starvingly hungry (or for that matter bloated and stuffed) for ages when I am on plan!

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 28/10/2012 13:24

willow apart from yesterday's aberration, I haven't felt "hungry" in the way you describe either. I do often feel like I need a big poo though, I feel a bit bunged up a lot of the time.

I am hoping once school is back tomorrow (scotland) I can get back to longer walks with the dog and maybe some classes or swimming. That said, I have heaps of extra seasonal work this week, eek. But think more exercise will move things along ...

B nothing, except 3 cups water when I let the dog out, went back to bed for a long lie.
L small piece leftover steak, egg and mushrooms (fried in butter)
D planning Lidl meatloaf with cauliflower and broccoli.

Hope everyone has an ok day.

Doshusallie · 28/10/2012 14:01

Halloooooo everyone!!!Grin

B - the last 3 frittatas.

L - 1 sausage, 2 celery sticks with pâté, 2 spoons of Greek yoghurt and a baby bel.

Dh is making the casserole for tea.

Boys have a friend to play and they are outside, I am hiding in the kitchen with the radio, the papers, and MN while I cook eggs and sausages to take to Butlins tomorrow.

I get hungry about 5-6 hours after eating - versus 2.5-3 hours when eating a low fat diet.

captainmummy · 28/10/2012 14:36

Willo- I don't feel hungry at all these days; when low-cal and highcarbing I was starving hungry every 2 hours.

I think the great thing (one of the great things!) is the inventive ways with veg. I used to eat boiled broc and cauli, peas and sweetcorn, salad, that sort of thing. But now, I cook with turnips, celeriac, cabbage, kale - and it's all delicious! Who knew?

B - 2 eggs omellette
L - Kale crisps,prob some cheese later
D - BIWI's Pork in coconut with cheesey cauliflower mash.

Incidentally - i made those linseed/flaxseed crackers on 'I breathe, I'm hungry' and they are not only crunchilious, but they are very good for the uuuumm, digestive system! (anyone with bunged-upness read on) I had them with cream cheese, mackeral pate and peanut butter, (not all at once) they really fill a bread/cracker shaped hole.

Doshusallie · 28/10/2012 17:10

Quick cheese sauce recipe?

WineGless · 28/10/2012 17:41

Cream cheese melted in Pan with cheddar grated in and splash of cream to get consistency right. Pinch of nutmeg in if you like it

WillieWaggledagger · 28/10/2012 18:18

Just back from work trip so haven't been able to go on MN for a few days... Hope you're all ok.I must attend to the spreadsheet I know but need to be on the computer rather than phone so please do bear with me

NSSS given the problems you have described I think you should give yourself a massive pat on the back for your progress, and as everyone else says we're all here to listen and offer any help we can

Biwi those tartiflettes sound fab, must try those.

Willow I tend to get hungry about 6-7 hours after eating, but will often fit in with dp to be sociable if he wants to eat earlier in the evening and go to the gym. On work days, I eat breakfast at 5.45am, lunch at 12.30 and supper at about 19.00.

I have loads of work trips over the next few weeks which I'm a bit worried about with this woe. The one I've just returned from was ok because we were in restaurants so I could pick and choose, but I know a few will have catered events so will need to plan accordingly. Am visiting family on weds and although I offered to bring supper she wouldn't hear of it so I will eat whatever is served

In other news we have the most ENORMOUS quantity of cooked ham here. It was in offer in sainsbury's so I bought a largish joint and put it in the slow cooker not quite realising how muh meat it would be! So we are working our way through that for the next few days, though I'm conscious it's processed

Doshusallie · 28/10/2012 20:07

Anyone get the Sunday times today? Article in there about new interest in gluten free diets favoured by the show biz community, but saying that they are all deluded as gluten free often means higher fat - said like that's a bad thing obviously.....

HumphreyCobbler · 28/10/2012 20:11

Yes! DH read that out to me. So frustrating that they get it all so wrong. The

WineGless · 28/10/2012 21:08

Welcome back Willie

NSSS - how are y doing tonight? Been thinking of you

Dosh- read it online and thought grrr
Very interesting discussions with my aunt today about her low carb diet. She was having horrendous chest pains for years which were investigated and hey couldn't come up with anything. She eventually started low carbing Nd cut out dairy and like a different woman. She looks fab.

We were comparing how it improves both physicaland mental well being. Although she drinks soya milk we were discussing the findings about soya.
I wish I could convert my dad- he has put more weight on which isn't good.

BigBroomstickBIWI · 28/10/2012 21:16

I heard today that I've been nominated for a gift in the MN Secret Santa. As I can only think that it's something to do with Bootcamp, can I just say a massive thank you to whoever it was who nominated me, and Blush that I'm really not worthy.
