Week 4 - Little Black Dress Low Carb Bootcamp - where the going gets tough ...

Morning all!

Come and confess all on the Spreadsheet of Wonderfulness

By now, you may be finding it tough going. The weight loss is nothing like it was in the first couple of weeks. In fact, you may even have seen the scales show a gain.

This is quite normal at this stage, as your body is shifting/has shifted into fat-burning mode, and you are now burning only fat. No more water loss. Long-term, sustainable weight loss is likely to settle at 1-2lbs per week.

By now, though, you should be more used to this WOE, and it should seem a more normal way to eat. Hopefully you've sorted out how to plan for times when you're out and about, and have a few strategies up your sleeve for the unexpected. And hopefully you are also better at knowing what does and doesn't work for you.

Here's to a good week to us all. Smile

Think I've over done the cabbage, leeks and mushrooms in cream. Had a huge portion tonight with baked chicken thighs and though it was delish I think I need a break from the cream, especially as I must have had at least 6 cups of tea (with cream) today too. Need to browse the recipe thread for inspiration for tomorrows tea I think.

Viperidae · 26/10/2012 23:36

toomuch Thank you I will make a visit to Lidl tomorrow and try some of the beef, I'll make the Latimer beef I mentioned upthread, it will be nice to have something warming.

It is freezing cold here but because we are on the coast it never snows.

Tea here tonight was ham (got a ham shank reduced to £2.49 at Sainsburys), celeriac dauphinoise and asparagus. Also cooked cabbage for the family as they like it, how anyone can eat that stuff amazes me, it is evil, the kitchen still smells like Satan has farted in it!

NewStartSameStory · 27/10/2012 02:40

-2C when I came home tonight and they were actually gritting the roads. Out of curiosity Anyone know when the clocks go back?

TOM has turned up which explains why i have been in a vile mood recently. Hopefully Monday will therefore bring a new found calmness.

horrorcanewyn · 27/10/2012 07:28

At 1am Sunday morning, they go back to midnight I think. Hope everyone's ok - a bit jealous of snow too.

tartiflette · 27/10/2012 09:04

I think it's tonight?

Doshusallie · 27/10/2012 09:13

Singing yes I have no doubt that will be us. Was very restrained last night. Am a bit scared of wine now it make the scales leap! It also gives me the most horrendous baggy eyes in the moning, I look like my dad! Even touche éclat struggles to cover them up!

3 of the divine muffins for brekkie. And swings into the Saturday mania that is swimming/gymnastics/football/food shopping.......

Brasssection · 27/10/2012 09:22

Thick frost here. Have lovely breaks to all of you who are going way.

Resisted wine last night. I haven't gone this long without alcohol since I was pregnant! but still getting cracking headaches, always wake with them and now before bed too. Horrible.

BigBroomstickBIWI · 27/10/2012 10:14

That doesn't sound good, Brass. Dehydration sounds like its not going to be an issue, if you are drinking loads of water. But maybe you need to consider your electrolyte balance? Up your sodium and potassium levels - salt, avocado and salmon are things to eat. Or consider buying an electrolyte product. Others will have to tell you which one as I don't buy them.

OP posts:
Brasssection · 27/10/2012 10:50

I wondered that too BIWI so will eat more salty stuff. Any excuse to eat more avocado. I love it. Had smoked salmon for bfast.

I tried a cauliflower crust pizza last night. It was ok but a bit soggy and I miss the crunch of real pizza. I also made kale crisps and thought they were VILE.

NewStartSameStory · 27/10/2012 11:07

Thank you. The extra hours sleep will be mightily beneficial if I am asleep before the clocks turn.

Hope you come to the end of the headaches Brass.

It is freezing.

Brasssection · 27/10/2012 11:32

Ok, I think this is it for me. It has been 3 weeks of really low carb, 3 plus litres of water and shredding 4-5 times a week. I bought some new scales too, expensive ones. So, after first 2 weeks, no change at all. After a further 6 days with new scales, I have gained 5 pounds!!! I know I'm in ketosis because I've been peeing on sticks. My clothes don't feel any different and the headaches are really awful. My waist measurement exactly the same. I really wanted this to work for me and have been very careful: honestly, not one cheat, not one. I even got DH to taste the pasta I was cooking to see if it was ready.

I can't see the point of giving up wine etc. for this. If these first weeks are meant to be the quickest weight losing ones. Really disappointed. Sad

vnmum · 27/10/2012 11:54

brass sorry you are feeling dissappointed. Could you put up what you have been eating etc to see if there is anything slightly out that could be causing it. Also, with the shred it is not uncommon to retain water for a week or so. Because you do it every day nearly, you are constantly tearing the muscles which then retain water to heal. Without a good few days rest it takes a while for the muscles to release the water.

Also you could be very sensitive to carbs so even a small amount can affect you. If you are getting readings on your ketostix at least that does mean you know you are burning body fat even if there is no show on the scales.

I had similar when i tried SW a long time ago. I stuck to the plan but as soon as i started running and shredding i gained and couldn't lose while i was exercising, very disheartening.

One of the best workouts i have found to do at home so far is the kettlebell swing. It's from a book called 'the swing' which is written by a woman who lost loads of weight following a relatively low carb diet and all she did was swing the kettlebell fod 30mins a day 2 to 3 times a week. She says that you can notice a difference in muscle tone after only 4 sessions and i would agree with that. My arms are leaner and more defined and my bum was more frim and lifted after only 2 sessions. It also burns alot of calories in a short spacs of time because it is an aerobic and anaerobic workout in one.

We have lovely blue sky and sun but it's flippin cold

Viperidae · 27/10/2012 12:17

Brass Don't give up. I suspect this is due to the amount of shredding you are doing. I am too unfit to shred just yet but am seeing a personal trainer who has recommended similar exercises to those vnmum recommends. It is circuits of things like doing squats while also doing a bicep curl with weights on the upward move, plank, etc but much less intense than The Shred. FWIW I tried a Bob Harper workout last Sunday and, although there were lots of exercises I could not do properly if at all, I put on 2lb between Saturday and Monday!

I don't want to bother you but is it worth a check-up at the GP for your headaches? It is more than likely to be a combination of change of diet, constipation, electrolyte balance, etc but any headache that you wake up with should ideally be checked out.

MrsHerculePoirot · 27/10/2012 12:20

brass sorry ku are feeling disappointed. I am right in thinking you are vegetarian? I think I have read somewhere else, can't remember where, that the Harcombe Diet (Zoe harcombe) works particularly well for vegetarians. It allows more carbs than bootcamp I think (not sure about first phase which is less than a week), but something to do with when you eat your carbs/dairy/protein and and what you wat it with. Not sure if I'm making any sense, but perhaps worth a go? I am sure that we'd all want you still to stay here and post with us, even if you follow a slightly different lc based plan!

Down to 16 stone 2.8 this morning! I can see the under 16 stone mark tantalisingly close now... Ready to catch you maggie!

Doshusallie · 27/10/2012 15:11

Very good point HP. I happen the Zoe harcombe diet book and recipe book and they are both geared up for veggies.

You can eat loads more of "good" carbs, because you don't mix fats and carbs in meals.

Brasssection · 27/10/2012 15:19

Thanks for all the encouragement. I don't want to dominate the thread, but v. Briefly, a typical day's food based on yesterday:

B. 2 scrambled eggs, mushroom fried in butter.
L. 100 gr salad, large tin of tuna, cucumber, olive oil and full fat mayo dressing.
D. 2 pieces cauli pizza and salad. Plenty of oil and mayo as dressing. Small amount of tomato sauce on pizza with mushrooms and anchovies.

100gr alpro yog, 2 baby bells and 6 olives as snacks.
3 x coffee with 20gr double cream each time.

I have been so careful with my carbs, weighing and logging everything and have been less than 20 each day. It might be the dairy but as a vegetarian, if I give up cheese and cream I can't do this. As it is, I don't like eating fish all that much but kind of have to.

I think Harcombe might be better for me. She was a vegetarian so gets that. I could give up shredding but it is really good for my mental health becuase it's quick and I usually see results pretty quickly.

Finally, probably worth saying that I feel pretty good on this. I am sleeping wel and have lots of energy. But I out that down to giving up booze.

Well done Mrs Herc! On your loss. You'll be in a Christmas bikini before too long!

Brasssection · 27/10/2012 15:20

Blush wasn't very brief!

SingingTunelessly · 27/10/2012 16:49

Aww Brass Sad. Your menu looks fine to me although maybe I'm missing something that the others can spot. You are drinking lots of water aren't you?

WineGless · 27/10/2012 17:33

Well done Mrs HP

Brass your menu looks fine to me. The next step would Be to cut out dairy but that's not going to work for you. Have a look at Harconve and don't give up the shred. I never lose weight when I start to exercise hence the numerous arguments over the years with WW/SW leaders. You e just got to work out what suits you and your lifestyle

Maybe BIWI or Jins or other long term Low carbers might see something else.

Well done mrs HP THAT'S BRILL

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 27/10/2012 17:55

Really really hungry today, no idea why, maybe the slightly more carby stew with carrots and parsnips last night?

And DH has just phoned to say he won't be home till 7. Starving!!

B oatbran cooked with water, a little cream added. Slice of ham.
Snack cocktail sausages. Was at a party and there were loads of goodies laid out for the mums, brownies, cupcakes, home baking etc. I resisted but needed something so laid into the mini sausages.
L Nigella 1 egg cooked in quarter tin of tomatoes, topped with little grated cheese
2nd snack [hblush] half a slice of roast pork, 2 teaspoons egg mayo, about 6 tablespoons yoghurt.
I just keep going back to the fridge looking for the next nibble. Aargh!!

D plans for steak and salad when DH eventually gets back.

vnmum · 27/10/2012 17:55

Sorry about the repost, don't know why that happened Blush

I can't see much wrong with your menu brass apart from the dairy if you are one of those people who are sensitive to it (like me Sad)

AuntieMaggie · 27/10/2012 18:50

Brass I put on weight initially with the shred so maybe that? Although I toned and lost size iyswim?

I had a burger today [hblush] wasn't thinking at all in my codiene addled brain when dp bought it and I ate it... My 'migraine' or whatever the hell it was has left me with a pulled muscle on one side of my neck so taking codiene for it. Really annoyed now as its day 4 nd meant me missing zumba this morning!

Anyway, onwards and upwards!

Oh and I found these

Lavendersbluedillydilly1969 · 27/10/2012 19:11

Found some virgin coconut oil in sainsburys today. I've read about this a bit in the past and never been sure if I believe in all the so called benefits of eating several spoonfuls a day. Does anyone here take coconut oil or have experience of consuming it, if so is it as beneficial as its supposed to be?

Doshusallie · 27/10/2012 19:21

Lunch was leftovers from last night, pork chop and leeks, broccolli, cabbage. Greek yoghurt for pudding.

Tea was at the pub, mixed grill.....asked them to take off the chips, peas and onion rings, and replace them with an extra fried egg, and mushrooms. May have converted my friend who looked longingly at my plate as she ate her "under 600 calories" meal.

Also had 2 glasses of red wine, and a teaspoon of peanut butter today.
