Week 3 Little Black Dress Low Carb Bootcamp - or Bootcamp Light!

BigBroomstickBIWI · 15/10/2012 08:59

Morning all!

Hopefully everyone has had a good couple of strict weeks, and the scales have rewarded you.

[[https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AmNIskihgXotdFVPcF9zWUhIal9BbTl5SnlTM3BlWVE#gid=0 Here is the link to the Spreadsheet of Wonderfulness. Enter your weight for today if you haven't already.

We're now ready to move on to Bootcamp Light - if you wish. If you're happy to stay on Bootcamp, then that's fine. Or, perhaps you want to do the hybrid of Bootcamp during the week and Bootcamp Light at the weekend?

Whatever, here are the rules of Bootcamp Light:

1. Eat when you?re hungry - if you?re not hungry, don?t eat
In Bootcamp, you should have been eating three meals a day. The point of this being to ensure that you got used to eating proper meals, and so that your blood sugar is regulated and stable. Having achieved that, you can now relax this a little bit. If you find you?re not hungry - which often happens, because ketosis suppresses your appetite - then don?t force yourself to eat. But don?t let yourself get so hungry that you make inappropriate choices! Always make sure you have plenty of low carb food to access quickly, if you need to.

2. Avoid processed food
Focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
You may include processed meats like bacon or (low carb) sausages, smoked salmon, smoked mackerel, gammon - but please don?t have these at every meal or every day. As well as being highly processed they often contain undesirable ingredients, can add unnecessary extra carbs into your diet, and often include sugar.

3. Eat lots of fat
Eating fat helps to keep you feeling fuller for longer. Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though, as this is too sweet and has too many carbs), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind

4. Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food
This is where the bulk of your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat.

Beware that some of the veg on the allowed list can be surprisingly high in carbs once you make up a portion of it ? this is because they are denser, and therefore you tend to use more ? compare, for example, 100g of onion with 100g lettuce! Keep your focus on those veg which contain 3g carbs per 100g and use these as the focus of your meals. Use those over 3g per 100g sparingly.

5. You may eat some dairy
You should aim to include plenty of butter on this WOE. Fry with it and add it to your vegetables. And if you know that dairy doesn?t impede your weight loss you may eat cheese, but don't overdo it. Full fat yoghurt is the best way to include dairy in your diet - but beware, it does contain carbs. Total Full Fat is the best.

If you?ve been cutting out tea/coffee, you can re-introduce this ? but just be careful how much milk you end up drinking. You can end up adding a lot of extra carbs this way.

6. You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day
Even if you?re drinking more tea/coffee than in Bootcamp, this is still a non-negotiable part of this WOE. And the more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. Water helps to flush out the ketones that your body will product ? so flushing out the fat. However, drinking this amount of water can affect your electrolyte balance; you need to make sure that you get plenty of sodium and potassium. There is less need to worry about restricting salt if you?re eating a low carb diet. Good sources of potassium are salmon and avocado. You could also consider supplements if you have an issue with this.

7. You may drink some alcohol
But restrict this to once or twice a week max. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine. Absolutely no beer/lager, cider, liqueurs, cocktails or full sugar mixers. You can drink spirits with artificial sweeteners, but bear in mind that we are attempting to avoid all things artificial!

Alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for your body, and it will use this over and above anything else that is available to it. Therefore, even if you?re following the diet absolutely to the letter, including alcohol can prevent weight loss.

8. You may eat some fruit
"Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and rhubarb are all fine. But please ? only once a day at the very most, and keep an eye on your portion sizes. Just for information ? these are the carb counts:

Rhubarb ? 0.8g carbs per 100g (but don?t forget you will need to sweeten this ? and not with sugar!)
Blackberries ? 4.4g carbs per 100g
Raspberries ? 4.6g carbs per 100g
Strawberries ? 6g carbs per 100g
Blueberries - 6.4g carbs per 100g (although this is a bit controversial - I have had differing carb counts from various sources - some saying as much as 12g carbs per 100g)

9. You may eat some nuts/seeds
"Nuts/seeds can make a good snack. BUT it is incredibly easy to overdo it, and you can end up eating your bodyweight in carbs. As an occasional snack they are great, but keep it occasional and keep the portions to a small handful at most.

Macadamias are not only luscious, but they are very low in carbs. Sainsbury?s sell little bags of roasted, salted Macadamias that work out at around 4g per bag.

Here are some carb counts ? BUT ? check the back of your packets as I don?t know if these are for raw or roasted nuts:
Pistachios 4.6g carbs per 100g
Macadamias 4.8g carbs per 100g
Pecans 5.8g carbs per 100g
Almonds 6.9g carbs per 100g
Peanuts 7.1 g carbs per 100g
Cashews 18.1g carbs per 100g

10. Avoid artificial sweeteners
The aim of Bootcamp was to help reduce the stranglehold that sugar has on us ? and to curb your sweet tooth. But it does make some things difficult, e.g. desserts at a dinner party, and it is undeniable that it can be enjoyable ? occasionally ? to eat something sweet. However, restrict such goodies. For some people, artificial sweeteners can impede weight loss.

Good luck for the forthcoming week!

Debs - have you read the rules?! Not only is chocolate spread (obviously) not allowed, but apples are really not part of Bootcamp.

And you think you're being too strict? Hmm

You have to cut out wheat, and you must cut out the apples and chocolate spread if you want to lose any weight.

If you're getting cravings it's because you're still indulging in sugar.

OP posts:
hurricanewyn · 16/10/2012 21:44

debs - each apple has about 20g of carbs.

tempertemper · 16/10/2012 21:46

Oh, but imagine a bootcamp where chocolate spread is allowed. I'd be all over it like a shitty stick.

debs39 · 16/10/2012 21:49

Oh golly!!! I was trying to be good and eat seasonally...and my tesco is shocking for varieties of veg....

On a plus point, I only had a 400g of choc spread and only had...ahem..about a quarter of it....before this WOE i would have hammered the lot and then tucked into the kids' chocolate stash!!!

Oh well, I shall just have to inform the baby to change his menu request!!!! Chocolate milk is banned now!!!

debs39 · 16/10/2012 21:53

PS tempertemper...DSs school hands out stickers for good behaviour that smell fruity...perhaps we shld ask the manufacturer to do a choccy version!!!

( can sense that BIWI will be along soon to tell me off for even contemplating a life involving even scratch and sniff chocolate stickers...shall I tell her that I have even tracked down an ambipur that is chocolate scented!!! - flickering firelights and cocoa..£2.99 for a 2pack at B and M bargains!!!!! )

BigBroomstickBIWI · 16/10/2012 21:55

debs - please - read Bootcamp rules ...

OP posts:
debs39 · 16/10/2012 22:05

Am on the floor sniffing the ambipur, BIWI...promise I will read the rules in 5 mins!!!!! : )

Viperidae · 16/10/2012 22:21

Another stressful day at work here and our lunch meeting had food provided which was sandwiches, crisps, cakes and bananas so I ate a prawns and dipping sauce thingy I have in the fridge for emergencies. Sadly it derailed my attempts to eat more veg again.

B: LC sausage, 2 scrambled eggs
L: Prawns and dipping sauce
Snack: a few little bits of chicken
T: Cauliflower cheese soup, salmon with seafood sauce and celeriac chips.

I think I have the tastebuds of the average 6-year-old, the only nice veg to me are carrots, peas and sweetcorn really. I don't like green veg, I can force myself to eat a mouthful or two of broccoli but hate cabbage, sprouts, etc and do not enjoy salad either (but will eat a bit under protest!) so veg is really proving a problem for me. Any suggestions for getting the yukky stuff down me gratefully appreciated!

I'm in agreement with those of you who say yoghurt is horrid! I find it quite sour. I did manage to eat some one day with rhubarb and cinnamon but haven't repeated it as I had to use a fair amount of sweetener which I am trying to avoid.

Just to add to my fussy list I also hate olives and I detest cheese, unless it is very mild and melted into something.

No wonder I've spent the last 20 years eating junk and getting fat is it?

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 16/10/2012 22:39

Viper, I thought I loathed Brussels sprouts (memories of soggy Xmas pasts) but I roasted some along with my chicken, liberally doused in oil and chilli flakes and they were actually quite ok!! I also enjoy leeks and mushrooms fried in butter and garlic, sometimes with creme fraiche added at the end to make it creamy. I can also take wilted spinach under a poached egg or wrapped in ham (a mini eggs florentine if you like).

tartiflette · 16/10/2012 22:51

Have you tried things roasted vip? Green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, sprouts etc etc can all be doused in olive oil, liberally salted and roasted - the taste is a world away from boiled or steamed veg. Or gratin? Layer thin slices of whatever veg in a dish, pour over cream and bake - gorgeous and can add garlic or top with Parmesan if you fancy. Or braise any veg into a pan, brown in butter and then add stock and cook until soft.

I have been strong today despite the fact am on day 3 of potty training the DTs, thus climbing the walls, and also we made chocolate banana bread this afternoon which I did not even feel tempted to sample.

Funny I've been feeling very energetic (well, for me) the last few days and inspired to pick up a few projects I've been putting off. I'm pretty sure it's not a coincidence that this is since I've been properly bootcamping.

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 16/10/2012 22:51

biwi or willie quick query, on the spreadsheet tab marked veg carb counter there are 2 entries for carrots. One at line 21, one at line 34. Am assuming its the higher value?

Was looking for inspiration and I think I will try a stir fry with bean sprouts and baby corn soon.

Today:
B a sort of Nigella egg in purgatory thing (chilli, garlic, a third of a tin of chopped toms, egg, a little grated cheese)
L 2 large portobello mushrooms roasted with oil, feta and chorizo, and watercress salad on side. Yum!
D "cottage pie" (red onion, mince, the other two thirds of the tinned toms, stock, leeks, mushrooms, paprika, chilli, topped with celeriac mash and grated cheese) Delish. Fed 3 hungry adults and there is a portion left over for my lunch tomorrow. (wont mention the spoonful of petit pois on the side, oops but at least i didn't touch the sweetcorn every one else had.

BigBroomstickBIWI · 16/10/2012 23:05

toomuch - it's to do with whether they are young or old carrots. As I can never tell if a carrot is old or young, I always assume they will be the higher carb count!

Viper - roasted broccoli with chilli is lovely (on the recipe thread). I also like to serve leeks in a similar way, although I do these in a frying pan. Slice the leeks, on the diagonal. Pan fry in butter and olive oil, seasoning with sea salt, black pepper and chilli flakes. Fry on a high heat until nice and soft/charred.

Or - break a cauliflower up into its florets, put in an oven baking dish, sprinkle with olive oil then season with ground cumin, black pepper and salt and roast for 20 minutes.

first things first:
Tea: ham and cabbage
Snack: yoghurt and small bit of cheese
Drinks about 1 1/2ish ltrs of water and one cup of coffee.

SO finished the day much better then it started.

Biwi - I would love to step back from training but can't as competing at the weekend. Get a small break before the next comp so will try and cut back for a week or two. I did suspect as much wrt the thin skin and chill blanes. Thanks for finding out for me.

Well done to inspiring suggest wrt to graze boxes.

Sorry lack of sleep is seriously catching up and the pain killers have kicked in. Onwards and downwards.

Got some chicken sausages to try tomo. They were significantly lower in carb then the normal ones so thought they'd make a change. Looking forward to veg and stuff tomo.
night.

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 16/10/2012 23:09

Ah ok so if I got those posh expensive wrapped baby/chanteray carrots instead of the soily singles, they would be lower carb?

caramelwaffle · 17/10/2012 00:37

I created a new recipe this evening.
Frozen fruit berries mixed with full fat yoghurt and quick chilled in the freezer make a lovely dessert.

Frozen berries - raspberry, blackberry, red currents, blackcurrents (£2 a bag from Iceland)

A few spoons of yoghurt.

Use a hand blender to mix these together (30 seconds or so)

Place in ramekin dishes. You can top these with fruit, nuts or seeds. I added 1/2 teaspoon of ground almonds on one, desiccated coconut on another and left some others plain.

Placed in freezer.

Would be perfect with a splash of Pure Maple syrup I feel, but it is not to be...

SingingTunelessly · 17/10/2012 07:05

Morning! What a dreadful one. Raining hard here. DH's car has had what seems to be a fairly major breakdown so I've got to ferry him around as well.

Poppy, I fear I made it sound like the bolognese was a fancy recipe Blush. It gets so long in the oven because I have an Aga so everything gets put together on top then bunged in the simmering oven for hours or days when I forget Tis delicious tho. Smile

New story, sounds like things are really tough for you at the minute. I am also fascinated by what you are training for! Sounds gruelling. Take care of yourself.

Bloss just Grin Grin at the mix up of Zumba and Pilates class. Couldn't get more different could you.

Waves to everyone on thread. Off for a proper catch up.

halfthesize · 17/10/2012 08:25

Morning all, I've lost another 1lbGrin now need to keep going, I think it may be the cutting out cheese and cream thats helping.

Off to brave the weather now on the school runs, which is dreadful here tooSad

vnmum · 17/10/2012 09:00

Half It seems quite a few of us longer term low carbers are finding cutting out dairy helps with the weight loss. I have to say, considering I relied heavily on cheese, I now don't miss it. I only use cream occasionally for cooking with.

WillieWaggledagger · 17/10/2012 09:14

good morning, thanks to everyone who has recorded their weight for this week on the spreadsheet

am having a proper pity party today

have had tonsillitis for nearly two weeks now and it is improving but i still feel under the weather, but not rotten enough to be in bed. i have a hideous erythema marginatum rash all over my arms and legs. ABs are making me feel bloated and nauseated. i am exhausted and uncomfortable and unmotivated and every carby thing is calling out to me as a way to look after myself and make myself feel better. i know intellectually that isn't the case, and am so far managing to control cravings, but this really is the closest i've come to a proper 'fuck it i'm going to binge on carbs' moment in 8 months. but i won't. i have had a diet coke though to perk me up

on the plus side the rain has moved on from here and it's lovely and sunny now. if it holds may force myself out for a walk at lunchtime to stop me feeling sorry for myself.

Pufflemum · 17/10/2012 09:20

Have ordered a raclette as it seems that this would make a great low carb alternative to a roast dinner on the weekends. My DC will love it. have pulled out an old Atkins recipe book for pudding inspiration and am going to try the low carb ice cream.

BigBroomstickBIWI · 17/10/2012 09:33

Oh, Willie Sad What a time of it you're having.
