Week 3 Little Black Dress Low Carb Bootcamp - or Bootcamp Light!

BigBroomstickBIWI · 15/10/2012 08:59

Morning all!

Hopefully everyone has had a good couple of strict weeks, and the scales have rewarded you.

[[https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AmNIskihgXotdFVPcF9zWUhIal9BbTl5SnlTM3BlWVE#gid=0 Here is the link to the Spreadsheet of Wonderfulness. Enter your weight for today if you haven't already.

We're now ready to move on to Bootcamp Light - if you wish. If you're happy to stay on Bootcamp, then that's fine. Or, perhaps you want to do the hybrid of Bootcamp during the week and Bootcamp Light at the weekend?

Whatever, here are the rules of Bootcamp Light:

1. Eat when you?re hungry - if you?re not hungry, don?t eat
In Bootcamp, you should have been eating three meals a day. The point of this being to ensure that you got used to eating proper meals, and so that your blood sugar is regulated and stable. Having achieved that, you can now relax this a little bit. If you find you?re not hungry - which often happens, because ketosis suppresses your appetite - then don?t force yourself to eat. But don?t let yourself get so hungry that you make inappropriate choices! Always make sure you have plenty of low carb food to access quickly, if you need to.

2. Avoid processed food
Focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
You may include processed meats like bacon or (low carb) sausages, smoked salmon, smoked mackerel, gammon - but please don?t have these at every meal or every day. As well as being highly processed they often contain undesirable ingredients, can add unnecessary extra carbs into your diet, and often include sugar.

3. Eat lots of fat
Eating fat helps to keep you feeling fuller for longer. Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though, as this is too sweet and has too many carbs), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind

4. Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food
This is where the bulk of your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat.

Beware that some of the veg on the allowed list can be surprisingly high in carbs once you make up a portion of it ? this is because they are denser, and therefore you tend to use more ? compare, for example, 100g of onion with 100g lettuce! Keep your focus on those veg which contain 3g carbs per 100g and use these as the focus of your meals. Use those over 3g per 100g sparingly.

5. You may eat some dairy
You should aim to include plenty of butter on this WOE. Fry with it and add it to your vegetables. And if you know that dairy doesn?t impede your weight loss you may eat cheese, but don't overdo it. Full fat yoghurt is the best way to include dairy in your diet - but beware, it does contain carbs. Total Full Fat is the best.

If you?ve been cutting out tea/coffee, you can re-introduce this ? but just be careful how much milk you end up drinking. You can end up adding a lot of extra carbs this way.

6. You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day
Even if you?re drinking more tea/coffee than in Bootcamp, this is still a non-negotiable part of this WOE. And the more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. Water helps to flush out the ketones that your body will product ? so flushing out the fat. However, drinking this amount of water can affect your electrolyte balance; you need to make sure that you get plenty of sodium and potassium. There is less need to worry about restricting salt if you?re eating a low carb diet. Good sources of potassium are salmon and avocado. You could also consider supplements if you have an issue with this.

7. You may drink some alcohol
But restrict this to once or twice a week max. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine. Absolutely no beer/lager, cider, liqueurs, cocktails or full sugar mixers. You can drink spirits with artificial sweeteners, but bear in mind that we are attempting to avoid all things artificial!

Alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for your body, and it will use this over and above anything else that is available to it. Therefore, even if you?re following the diet absolutely to the letter, including alcohol can prevent weight loss.

8. You may eat some fruit
"Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and rhubarb are all fine. But please ? only once a day at the very most, and keep an eye on your portion sizes. Just for information ? these are the carb counts:

Rhubarb ? 0.8g carbs per 100g (but don?t forget you will need to sweeten this ? and not with sugar!)
Blackberries ? 4.4g carbs per 100g
Raspberries ? 4.6g carbs per 100g
Strawberries ? 6g carbs per 100g
Blueberries - 6.4g carbs per 100g (although this is a bit controversial - I have had differing carb counts from various sources - some saying as much as 12g carbs per 100g)

9. You may eat some nuts/seeds
"Nuts/seeds can make a good snack. BUT it is incredibly easy to overdo it, and you can end up eating your bodyweight in carbs. As an occasional snack they are great, but keep it occasional and keep the portions to a small handful at most.

Macadamias are not only luscious, but they are very low in carbs. Sainsbury?s sell little bags of roasted, salted Macadamias that work out at around 4g per bag.

Here are some carb counts ? BUT ? check the back of your packets as I don?t know if these are for raw or roasted nuts:
Pistachios 4.6g carbs per 100g
Macadamias 4.8g carbs per 100g
Pecans 5.8g carbs per 100g
Almonds 6.9g carbs per 100g
Peanuts 7.1 g carbs per 100g
Cashews 18.1g carbs per 100g

10. Avoid artificial sweeteners
The aim of Bootcamp was to help reduce the stranglehold that sugar has on us ? and to curb your sweet tooth. But it does make some things difficult, e.g. desserts at a dinner party, and it is undeniable that it can be enjoyable ? occasionally ? to eat something sweet. However, restrict such goodies. For some people, artificial sweeteners can impede weight loss.

Good luck for the forthcoming week!

Update:

Had a few days where I didn't seem to lose, then suddenly lost about three pounds in three days.

I have to say - I feel DIFFERENT. Really, really different.

I think it's taken a month for this diet to change my body chemistry.

My skin looks really good, despite the lack of fruit in my diet (also not eating enough veg). My energy levels are going up day by day. I've got fewer aches and pains. Am finding getting up in the mornings easier. Mentally I feel MUCH better than I have in a long while.

Weirdly - I am hardly farting at all (TMI Blush) and poo is what I'd call normal for the first time in years. No more 'sludge poo'. (sorry!)

It's making me wonder whether sugar and wheat have been the cause of my slightly shit health over the past few years. (nothing drastic - just tired, depressed, achy, no energy).

I find this diet works best for me if it includes a decent amount of fat. The greek yogurt in the morning is good, especially if I add a tablespoon of coconut cream (I use the powder). Today's lunch has just been a bit of skin off the roast chicken, plus some celeriac parmigiana. Tonight will be chicken in mushrooms and cream, with broccoli. Have also enjoyed eating steak, lamb, oily fish etc.

Really pleased at the way it's going. I hope I never go back to eating a lot of sugar and wheat.

hurricanewyn · 17/10/2012 16:13

Shagmund - I feel the same. For 12 years I've had IBS and suffered a constant cycle of alternating diarrhoea & constipation. I started low carbing in July and this cleared up in a week/week and a half and it hasn't returned. That was 12 years of misery - sometimes being unable to leave the house because it was so unpredictable, trying to self regulate with medication and always being bloaty, crampy and windy.

As far as I'm concerned this WOE is fantastic

WillieWaggledagger · 17/10/2012 16:15

viper, i have lost more than that, and sometimes i have gone up by up about 5lb over the course of a week but then had a net loss of 1lb or 2lb. sometimes i have gone up by a couple of lbs or so while being as good as gold. the body is mysterious!

i know how tough it is when you can see the finish line is so far away, but you have to look at the overall trend and as long as it's downwards then you're ok. i think you're a couple of months or so in now? so it will slow down, and newstart is right of course that slow is better (though can be demotivating!). please don't compare yourself to others (Your Mileage May Vary), their physiology is different and you don't know how long they have been doing this nor what they were eating before.

do you feel that this WOE is a sustainable one for you? That has been the key thing for me. i knew i was in this for the long haul, and i had done well in terms of weight loss with my low carb / low fat thing, but i was miserable and on track to go back to old eating habits. with this WOE i am going to be able to keep going for another year, and hopefully into maintenance too.

WillieWaggledagger · 17/10/2012 16:17

sorry, by my last sentence i mean that i will have been able to carry on for another year, and then into a maintenance phase which will be for the rest of my life i hope

MsRinky · 17/10/2012 16:24

A pound is a perfectly normal daily fluctuation, don't panic. Stick with it, the weight will come off.

My total target loss is 100lbs, which is just over 7 stones. As of today I'm 41% of the way there...

Boobz · 17/10/2012 17:03

Viperidae - on the spreadsheet it says you way 92lbs! How can you have 7 stone to lose - that's all of you! Or is that a typo?

So I can't blame this minging thing on my face to my diet? Hmmm. I'm really annoyed, as me and DH are supposed to be going to a work dinner tomorrow night, but tbh, I don't want to go because of this creature on my lip. But I know DH will want to go as he's just found out he's gotten the job posting he has applied for, so wants to see everyone to tell them and be all happy. I know I should go but I will just feel so self conscious all night. Gah.

Have done 90 mins of Bikram yogo and 60 mins of plyometrics (circuits to you and me) today and I am exhausted.

AuntieMaggie · 17/10/2012 17:21

shagmund i noticed the same about the farting even when I've had lots of veg.

I'm sleeping so much better too - really heavy but waking up with energy. Crap sleep is a problem with pcos because of insulin and hormone flutuations overnight so among all the other things hopefully this woe has helped with that too.

I think it is sustainable about 90% of the time which is better than nothing right? Just hard when life/work gets in the way.

dotty2 · 17/10/2012 17:31

Have just got to the end of my 24h charity fast. Had coffee with cream but nothing else and feel surprisingly ok. Think it is because this woe is evening out my hunger : no more carb highs and crashes. That said, am going to treat myself to some almonds on the train home. Prawn Thai curry tonight with coconut cream in it and lots of low carb veg.

BigBroomstickBIWI · 17/10/2012 17:54

Afternoon all! Thanks for the Thanks and kisses!!!

I'm so chuffed to hear that so many of you are finding other benefits to this WOE. It's really hard to convey to other people, sometimes, why I am so evangelical about it - but you are starting to see why! No more IBS, no more hot flushes, clear skin, no thrush, etc etc. With the added by product of losing weight. Oh, and lovely food as well. Not really like dieting, is it?

Viper don't be disheartened. Around weeks 3 and 4 it is very common for weight loss to slow, or even to go up slightly. Your body is just sorting itself out. You have, after all, lost over half a stone already! Just keep focusing on that. And as others have said, weight loss isn't linear. I know for me, that I can go for ages, going up and down by the same couple of pounds - and then suddenly, seemingly without reason, drop by another couple.

My weight loss has been very slow - I've taken since February to lose 25lbs. However, I have in that time period been away for the weekend twice, been on holiday for a fortnight, and drunk wine every weekend (and occasionally during the week). I can hardly say that these months have seen me deprived! I, too, am in this for the long haul. Slower weight loss is more sustainable in the longer term, which is the most important thing.

And if this WOE suits you, and you're enjoying your food rather than feeling hungry and deprived, then what's wrong with just sticking at it?

These are for you Thanks to cheer you up!

Viperidae · 17/10/2012 18:37

Thanks for all the encouragement, giving up is definitely not on the cards - I was just feeling a bit disheartened. I have probably made it harder for myself by following something a bit Briffa-ish for 3 weeks, going on holiday and feeding my Haagen-Dazs addiction for 2 weeks then starting bootcamp so I went down 1st 2lb, back up 9, down 8 and possibly back up 1! It is my 3rd week of this time so I would expect it to slow down about now but had hoped to be a bit further along by the time it did.

NewStart It is good to know others are experiencing the same, I was feeling a bit "poor me". I'm not actually feeling any size difference yet though so will look forward to that!
Shagmund I too have had the improvement of "sludge poo" Blush although it never worried me, it just became the norm but it also makes me wonder about intolerances.
Thanks Willie I know I am here for the long haul and I am eating better than I have for a long time so am trying to take a long term view - it is just easier to do that if you get off to a flying start. It's really good to hear of someone else who has started off at a high weight and is winning!

For Boobz and anyone else wondering, I'm not comfortable putting my weight on there (I maintain it's covered by the Official Secrets Act!) so am counting down from 100 and will change it to my real weight when I feel more at ease with it.

Last but not least, BIWI, thanks for the common sense (again!)

Off to stir the lamb curry and mash the cauliflower into "rice", thanks again everybody.

BigBroomstickBIWI · 17/10/2012 18:41

No worries, Viper! It's what we're all here for.

I haven't got anywhere near as much as you to lose - probably about a stone now - but I get downhearted from time to time, when the scales refuse to budge. When I'm rewarded with a tiny loss for good behaviour and a huge increase for a tiny misdemeanour! But I have to remind myself what the alternatives might be. And I am never, ever, ever, ever going back to calorie counting and that gnawing hunger and obsession with food, ever, ever, ever again! And even if I haven't reached my target yet, I'm still 25lbs lighter than when I started.

OP posts:
WillieWaggledagger · 17/10/2012 18:51

Am watching great British bake off final. Is it possible to have an insulin reaction just looking at carbs?!

Doshusallie · 17/10/2012 18:56

me either Biwi. Going back to that I mean.

And my wind is much better too. MUCH better.

[slurps gin and tonic]

AuntieMaggie · 17/10/2012 19:13

Omfg that braised cabbage is lush! Had it with my beef stew... mmmmmm...

Boobz · 17/10/2012 19:44

Ah got it Viper. Looking forward to giving you a big (virtual) high five when you reach your goal and can put the real number on the spreadsheet.

vnmum · 17/10/2012 20:03

biwi i met up with goldenwhippoorwill today. She is lovely Smile and we were waxing lyrical about how evangelical we are about this woe for ourselves, our DC and even our animals and how nice it was to talk to someone else in rl who gets it rather than thinking it is a fad.

Lunch was tuna mayo and olives
Tea was chorizo omelette with left over braised cabbage

motherofluvlies · 17/10/2012 20:03

O my goodness.it is indeed.I never knew cabbage could taste so good.Having it with roast chicken.
have to say girls I was sorely tempted last night but reading these posts kept me straight. Its such a support.
thankee awl.

NewStartSameStory · 17/10/2012 20:12

B: scrambled eggs
L: yoghurt and a few low carb chicken sausages
T: cauliflower and broccoli with a little cheese melted over top. Pork

Have not drunk enough water, had 2 coffees. child is reoccurring. As soon as he settles I am going to sleep!

hurricanewyn · 17/10/2012 20:14

Evening all - glad to hear you're not leaving us viper and Thanks to all who need them & hope everyone feels better tomorrow.
Good day here for me. No breakfast as I was too lazy to make any & wasn't hungry enough to warrant getting off my bum Smile
Lunch was left over soup from yesterday as well as crackling made from yesterday's pork shoulder. Dinner was a lasagne made with gouda instead of emmental & instead of mince I shredded the left over pork. Twas delicious if I say so myself. Had it with broccolli.

Tomorrow will be a cheese omlette & left over lasagne. I'll be in work & need to avoid all the chocs & cake floating around the place.

BigBroomstickBIWI · 17/10/2012 20:15

Good looking menu, NewStart! Hope you sleep well.

Willie - sadly/shockingly, yes it is!

OP posts:
Doshusallie · 17/10/2012 20:19

Tea: 2 salmon steaks with salad, celery, mushrooms and mayo

Snacks: pkt pork scratchings, 2 teaspoons of peanut butter and a teaspoon of Greek yoghurt.

WineGless · 17/10/2012 20:22

Drawing a veil over lunch. It was work thing and the ONLY thing on offer was sandwiches and chips. My boss knows I am low carbing and he has been doing it too therefore I wrongly presumed he had catered for me.

Made IPD butter chicken for tea and had it with buttered spring greens. Can highly recommend although quite spicy

bucksmum · 17/10/2012 20:36

Viper I have 7 stone to lose as well and this week I only lost a 1lb. I'm upping the water this week and cutting down on coffee, hopefully next weeks weigh in will be better Wink

Poppy1234 · 17/10/2012 20:41

Am super stuffed, portion control went totally out the window tonight, our nanny made an amazing curry from the hairy bikers mum knows best book (about the only low carb option in there) and it was absolutely gorgeous. I had intended to leave some for my lunch tomorrow as well but it was just so good. It was tomato based though so I think the carbs might add up.

I also made a dough for flaxseed crackers which I'm going to pop in the oven tomorrow morning to have with my chicken liver pâté. Very excited about this recipe www.ibreatheimhungry.com/2012/01/low-carb-rosemary-sea-salt-flax.html but trying not to go too far down the road of trying to find substitutes for everything and definitely staying away from artificial sweeteners.

Found fabulous peanut butter today by Stonewallwww.stonewallkitchen.com/shop/speciality-foods/pantry/peanut-butters/551211.html so I'm all set up for my Greek yoghurt extravaganza.

WillieWaggledagger · 17/10/2012 20:43

REALLY biwi?! Shit I was joking!
