Week 1 Weigh-In - Little Black Dress Low Carb Boot Camp

WillieWaggledagger · 30/09/2012 16:17

i know you're all dying to get started on the low carb boot camp, and for those who haven't done this before, here is the link to the spreadsheet where you should record your starting weight for Monday 1st October in column c next to your name. Please don't touch any other columns for now

weight is recorded in lbs, so if you have problems converting from kg or stones, FiddledeFat made a handy widget which can be found in the tab at the bottom labelled 'conversion'

if your name isn't on the spreadsheet then you can add yourself by adding a new line and dragging the formulae down from an adjacent row, or just ask me to add you and I will do so as soon as i can

good luck with the first week of bootcamp!

mmmm Olives! Never had them before this woe, now they are my new addiction Smile. Only good ones from deli's etc, not jarred or tinned but in lovely flavoured oil etc.

teaandthorazine · 04/10/2012 18:31

Blimey, I think this thread is even busier than the original Bootcamp!

WineGless Thanks

Work has been absolutely mental today so have had literally nothing except a cup of tea this morning Hmm. Just had two babybels and another cup of tea. Barely a litre of water. Am having scrambled eggs with philadelphia and smoked salmon tonight.

My job is so rotten for proper, healthy eating. Cannot wait for my new job with regular hours and even the outside possibility of the odd lunchbreak! No more sitting in car parks stuffing down a pepperami... (god that sounds a bit weird...)

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 04/10/2012 18:37

what the hell do you do tea? I cant function properly if i dont eat. Sad

ooh I had forgot about olives. going to buy some naice olives to go with my naice everything else. Grin

had also forgotten about celery and peanut butter. Cheers biwi

foosty · 04/10/2012 18:40

thanks for the advice earlier today BIWI - have been getting ideas from others' meals on the thread which I'll give a shot. I made the brutal mistake of weighing myself and I was UP 2lbs Shock - BUT BUT I did weigh at nearly lunchtime - I usually get a better number first thing! and my period is due tomorrow, and I'd barely been to the loo...(sorry)...so, I'm hoping it wasn't a true result.

What are your feelings on exercising quite intensively while doing this woe? I have been doing circuits for about 8/9 months now, and have toned up considerably. My muscles are much stronger and becoming more defined - I just know that when I lose this flab I'll uncover abs of steel! But I think that when the scales don't budge it's due to gaining muscle and even though I can phyically see a difference in my body, I'm not seeing it reflected in the scales, which is somewhat depressing. I read that weight loss is 80% diet and just 20% exercise. I don't know what to do - I love my circuits class and love how good it makes me feel, but really, really want to see weight loss now. Any thoughts?

ShagmundFreud - there's a weightloss forum called Minimins, I think which has tons of different threads for various different diets/way of eating. Not quite what you're looking for, but quite useful sometimes!

teaandthorazine · 04/10/2012 18:41

I'm a midwife. One Born Every Minute has a lot to answer for - I can't remember the last time I had a cup of tea, let alone a slice of cake at work! Grin

Viperidae · 04/10/2012 18:50

I'm struggling with snacks too but hating olives, celery and cheese makes it harder. Somehow ham and chicken don't register as snack food yet but they say it takes around 3 weeks to make a habit so maybe it'll click soon.

I love nuts though and peanut butter so once we're through bootcamp it may get a bit easier although last time I low carbed my weight stalled when I brought them in so I worry nuts may not be good for me, anyway time will tell when I get that far!

BigStickBIWI · 04/10/2012 18:55

But you have to ask yourselves why are you snacking? Is it a habit? Or are you just not eating enough at mealtimes?

Shagmund - I think you've just described Bootcamp threads, haven't you? Wink

foosty - only ever weigh yourself first thing in the morning, naked and after you've been to the loo! And yes, pre-period your weight can go up. If you have been exercising intensively and regularly you will weigh more because you have more muscle. But the added advantage is a better metabolic rate. Perhaps instead of focusing on the scales you should try and focus on your clothes? Find something that is too tight and keep trying it on - that will give you the most real guide to how much you are losing. And absolutely no reason for you to even consider giving up your exercise.

And we are only on day 4!

WillieWaggledagger · 04/10/2012 18:56

Winegless take care of yourself, and I hope your colleagues are bearing up ok

WillieWaggledagger · 04/10/2012 18:57

I don't even put deodorant on before I weigh myself in the morning!

OP posts:
WineGless · 04/10/2012 19:05

Thanks Willie

foosty - I was going to say exactly same as BIWI. Only weigh once a day and in the morning naked. A litre of water weighs 2lbs so if you are drinking and not been for a wee it won't give a true reading. It really is best to weigh once a week.

I would also agree about taking measurements too. Around week 4-5 people often have a stall on the weight for couple of weeks but lose cms/inches

I couldn't have done this without the Bootcamp threads- they have kept me in the straight and Narrow as well as making new friends. Plus it's only on here that I can bore everyone!!

2muchmess · 04/10/2012 19:08

Hi all. I started on monday but am on holiday in spain so not sure what i weigh yet. Will fill in spreadsheet when i get home. Need to lose at least a stone i think - really let things slip over the summer. Been ok here because we are self catering but i am very bloated and wondering if maybe im not drinking enough. Hard when you are out and about in a new place with the little ones. Anyway, home on sunday so i can weigh myself then (not that i want to see the hard truth...)
Have done this diet before on and off and i feel great when im on it but manage to slip up spectacularly every time about a couple of weeks in. I have just finished a month long carb frenzy and this is me giving it one last chance before i have to decide that its a great diet, but possibly not for me. Im about 10lbs heavier than when i started so i will need to be very careful not to slip again. Since then ive read loads and loads about low carbing and know that i will have to introduce them slowly this time but eventually would like to get to a place when at goal where i can have the odd ice cream or croissant and it not matter too much.
Anyway sorry about the long post but im feeling a bit crappy about it all right now.

WineGless · 04/10/2012 19:13

2muchmess

Sorry you are feeling fed up especially when you are on holidays. You should be enjoying yourself.

When you say you "mess up" after a couple of weeks what happens? Do you have one blow out then slip off wagon thinking you have ruined everything? What do you find are the benefits?

More importantly have you posted on Bootcamp threads before?

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 04/10/2012 19:27

Grr, bloody DH is supposed to be doing this too, and he confessed at dinner that he'd had a bag of crisps at lunchtime and then he went and made himself a gin and tonic. And he said he was going to Shred with me tonight, so I didn't Shred first thing (which is easier to do, rather than having to wait for the baby to be asleep and my dinner to go down before I can do it), and now he's changed his mind. I am so angry with him! He's got a lot more to lose than I do - he's got 2 stone to go before he'd be a healthy BMI. I just want him to focus and lose another stone, at least!

butterflyexperience · 04/10/2012 19:37

I'm in!
Started on Monday and have just found this thread.
So far have lost 4 pounds, whoo hoo!

i must admit I have also cheated :(
Had one home made cupcake and packet of quavers (bad bad dieter) and one cup of tea with one sugar...
but other wise have been ok

Viperidae · 04/10/2012 19:39

I made the meatzza!!

It was very nice, tasted italian in a non-specific way, rather like meatballs and pizza rolled into one. I served it with sliced runner beans as I had salad at lunchtime and always feel warm stuff fills me up more. DH has eaten it and proclaimed it very nice.

Tried a bit of greek yoghurt with vanilla and cinnamon; it is too sharp for me on its own but I can imagine it would be lovely either sweetened or with strawberries so will wait till after bootcamp and try again then.

BIWI - you are right about snacking. It probably is just a habit as the food we are eating is good but I guess the reason most of us are overweight is we respond to things like thirst, gurgly tummy, stress, etc by eating. Another habit to break!

Interestingly I was speaking to one of our GPs at work. He is tall, slim and fit (fit in a healthy way rather than a phwoar way that is!) but was telling me that he has removed all carbs from his diet, other than at his evening meal when he just eats whatever family tea is. He can't really explain why and how he got here but says he feels much healthier and notices he feels sluggish and underpar if he has more carbs. He was very positive about it as a way of eating.

hurricanewyn · 04/10/2012 19:56

Evening all - just checking.

I've done nothing but eat today (well that's how it feels). All low carb things, but still a lot.

B - Pate
Snack - Chorizo, spread with philly & wrapped around chicken breast
L - Chicken Salad with 'pestonaise' & cauliflower soup
Snack - Greek Yoghurt
D - Shepherds Pie with swede mash
Snack - Pork crackling and pork shoulder from the slow cooker (meant for tomorrow Blush)

I'm tired, ill & giving up smoking. That's my excuse & I'm sticking to it

Doshusallie · 04/10/2012 20:04

[tries to block image of tea sitting in a darkened car park scarfing pepperami.]

No snacks at all today. Have had two very weak g&ts though. I know. Rubbish. Have aced the food but really struggle with zero alcohol. Which makes me sound like a complete alkie. Sad. Which I'm not! Could stop anytime I want! Except any day at all.

Winegless huge hugs to you. Filled up at your post.

Have made DH's bollocknese sauce. Not sure what I'll have yet.

WillieWaggledagger · 04/10/2012 20:35

Well I can tick off 3x runs and 1x shred this week which means I have 2x shred to go . I decided to run today instead of tomorrow because the weather looks shitty tomorrow (and also because I am putting off shred...)

foosty · 04/10/2012 20:45

WineGless - your post made me sad. I watched the coverage on the news and was a bit teary myself; I don't know how I'd have coped if I was as close to it as you are. Be kind to yourself.

thanks BIWI and WineGless, good advice as usual! A litre of water weight 2lbs?! Who knew?? That changes things, I had def had more than that before weighing! I am absolutely KNACKERED for some reason tonight. Is that a side effect too? About to have a very early night!

TooImmature - seriously - sod your DH and just get on with this by yourself. I can see it's frustrating for you but you can't let his inaction be a reason for stopping you. Maybe if he sees you're serious about this he'll jump on the bandwagon.

chocbuttons · 04/10/2012 20:48

well done to everyone who's already lost weight! (my DS broke my scales so I can't weigh, but dont feel like I necessarily have) but only day 4 as BIWI reminds us!
I also thought about posting that I was giving up yesterday - had to take the day off work (something I rarely do) as I was so unwell. Do have a cold, but I think it was much worsened by the 'carb flu' as I was so sick and dizzy I almost collapsed. Cheated- in desperation I ate an apple and a carrot, but am much better today (except for the cold), so hopefully over the worst. Also amazingly much less tired than usual, even though DS kept me up a lot last night. Hope this gives hope to anyone really suffering!
Was still eyeing up colleagues' choc biscuits at work though...

WillieWaggledagger · 04/10/2012 20:50

Yy foosty 1ml water = 1 gram

Tooimmature I missed your post, so annoying when you've psyched yourself up for exercise

Thanks everyone for advice re children's diet.

Vnmum, really interested that you are feeding your children according to paleo guidelines, I've done quite a bit of reading into this way of eating and do have concerns about feeding children food that I wouldn't eat for compelling health reasons e.g. wheat. I think will continue with what I am doing, adding porridge, starchy veg and fruit to their other wise low carb diet and minimising wheat as long as they are at home. When they are out restaurants/parties/playdates they can have whatever they want as I do not want to be a diet nazi and it is completely beyond my control.

Anyway, dinner tonight was beyond lovely and I have a new favourite veg, green beans roasted in the oven, absolutely beautiful and could be the childrens' new favourite snack (either that or they were so hungry they could have eaten their own arms as dinner was running late). Swede roasted in duck fat almost conned DH until he tasted it (think I was getting cocky after the cauli rice success). Highly recommend the haddock and spinach gratin.

PrincessSparkle86 · 04/10/2012 21:08

Evening ladies Smile

Havent caught up with te thread tonight yet properly :/ been a very busy day!

I made my curry and cauliflower rice for dinner and it was lush... Was so impressed With the rice!! Will defo be makingbit again Grin

Ive been very good today, no snacks but i am about to have some kebab meat :-/

MrsHerculePoirot · 04/10/2012 21:08

WineGless big hugs.

AuntieMaggie - I also taken Metformin, but haven't had any problems with it when eating v low carb. I may take a lower dose though than you? Do you know roughly what amount of carbs work for you each day?

BIWI - tried out the new DL menu today. It is really good! I had a 'no carb burger' which was a homemade burger between two large muchrooms with tomato (and poss bacon or something else I can't remember now) with a bit of green salad on the side. The whole menu tells you the g of carbs/protein/cals for every dish - before I could only have the omelette without asking for modifications (eg swap chips for salad), now I think at least half of it is bootcamp friendly and the other half easily adapted!

Doshusallie · 04/10/2012 21:15

Can someone please link to cauliflower rice? [makes me want to say Condoleeza Rice Grin]. Have two that need eating.
