My top tip for arm toning is 'hanging on to your pram with a vice-like grip whilst walking down a big ice-covered hill'.

Chopstheduck · 16/01/2013 16:33

My arm toning tip for the day would be kneading pasta!

LittleAbruzzenBear · 16/01/2013 16:42

Ooh, always wanted to make my own pasta, but never got around to it.

WiseKneeHair · 16/01/2013 16:51

My top toning tip for the day would be, er, oh not sure you get any sitting in front of a computer --MNing- all day. Grin
Welcome muddlingalong

WiseKneeHair · 16/01/2013 20:21

Scales have arrived.
Bad news is, I'm not 2 stone lighter.
Good news, I'm not any heavier Grin

TeapotofDoom · 16/01/2013 20:31

I used FitDay for years (until I stopped!) but just switched to MFP which I'm finding better. One thing I'm not sure about.... You know how it adds back on the calories you exercised away each day? I'm not used to that, as with FitDay you just kept under your calorie goal and the exercise was recorded separately, so I never ate into it!

Do you eat into the exercise cals? Or not at all? Or a certain %? I can't figure it!

WiseKneeHair · 16/01/2013 20:49

Teapot it's up to you. Some do, some don't.
I try not to, but if I've gone a bit over on food, it helps mitigate against the damage. Also, it can be an incentive. For example, I am 60 cals over at the moment, but if I go and do some exercise (I'm going to in about 20 minutes), then that'll bring me back under. Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 16/01/2013 22:24

I rarely do TeapotofDoom but some people say they need to eat at least some to keep weight loss going. I always saw it as the more you exercise the faster you'll lose but my lowest calorie goal was 1300 so didn't feel the need to eat it. Plus I am quite active and had my settings on lightly active and didn't add my every day walking to mfp but only my runs or if I did lots extra walking :)

Can any one help me, trying to log doing 30 day shred and no idea what it would come under, for the time being I have put it under circuit training.

WiseKneeHair · 16/01/2013 22:42

I've answered you on MFP, but yes, I log it as the same. Grin

muddlingalongquitenicely · 16/01/2013 22:50

Thanks for the quick response :) I only have 2 friends on mfp so posted on here to get a wider audience!

TeapotofDoom · 16/01/2013 22:54

Oh cheers, Wise and cinnamon, that clarifies. I think I will eat into the majority of those for the next week or two then when I plateau around week 3 or 4, will reduce and reduce the % of exercise calories I eat.

I have had a couple of days when I have come in massively under, as well - as we have all been ill here. But I'm scared that will slow me down.

Talking of scales - anyone rely on the weigh-ins on Wii Fit? I ask because I threw out all my scales last time I did this, found that for me they were diet killers. And I started to feel it was a bit unhealthy watching the numbers- especially after two years' solid of doing it, when I got to that last stubborn 10lb. Now I am reluctant to buy scales again (discovered the sensitive, expensive digital ones actually varied more depending where I put them on my uneven floors, than a cheapo old fashioned scales from Ikea!) But I can do the weigh in every couple of weeks, especially now, at the start, on my balance board. Just curious if anyone else has relied on their Wii for this and if you think it is accurate or not?

Chopstheduck · 17/01/2013 08:18

we used to have a wii fit and I think it was fairly accurate actually! But it is a bit more of a faff, especially if you want to weigh first thing in the morning.

Argos have loads cheap atm, so I bought a cheap pair from there. I'm just going to make sure I weigh with the scales in the same place each time. I'm not going to worry about weight too much though, I know the inches are coming off slowly, as I'm back in my old jeans!

WiseKneeHair · 17/01/2013 08:45

I don't know about the wii scales, but if it is a bit of a faff, that may not be a bad thing! Only weighing yourself every 1-2 weeks (or even less) is a good way of doing it.
My scales are just inside the door in our En suite, so very time I go up there I could (and sometimes do) hop on. Can end up weighing myself 5-6 times a day, which is meaningless.
My new scales need you to be barefooted to work properly and I hate taking my socks off, so I'm hoping this will restrict me to at least only weighing once a day. I may then try and wean myself gradually down to once a week!

OneTwoOrThree · 17/01/2013 09:11

Just checking in :)

Finding it hard to keep motivated - wolfed down a box of Cadbury fingers last night. 750 cals in 10 mins. Oh dear... Also had a few glasses of wine so am mildly hungover today which just makes me hungry. Aargh!

I'm still thinking about getting a fitbit, so might take a walk in to town today to buy one.

Any newbies - please feel free to add me on MFP. Same name as here.

Chopstheduck · 17/01/2013 09:15

OneTwoOrThree - maybe you need a day off once in a while? Last time I was dieting, I had about 4 stone to lose and so I had a day off once a week for wine or take away! I think it helped me keep motivated and I was exercising LOADS so still lost it over 6 months.

I can't give up wine, I enjoy it far too much. I've cut down to once a week though and I do actually feel tons better for it.

MackerelOfFact · 17/01/2013 09:52

Hello all - fantastic to see so many enthusiastic new names! I'm knuckling back down and doing well, I'll be back under 10 stone hopefully by the end of the week and then I'm pretty much back where I was pre-December when it all went a bit tits-up.

Still aiming to get another 1.5-2 stone off before April. Taking a slightly different tactic at the moment and doing something halfway resembling the 5:2 diet and calorie cycling. Monday and Thursday are 500 cal days, and Friday and Sunday are 1900 calorie days - the rest are somewhere in the region of 1200-1400. MPF doesn't really support this so I'm just using it to measure calories rather than stick to their goals. I'll see if this changes anything.

MaggieMcVitie · 17/01/2013 09:58

Hi can I join you?

Have been using MFP since September, started at 12st 2 and weighed in this morning at 11st. Have a stone and a half to go.

Using MFP combined with slimfast at the moment as I'd hit a bit of a impasse after Christmas Grin

WiseKneeHair · 17/01/2013 10:03

OneTwo well done for checking in and admitting that it went a bit haywire yesterday. I think that's half the battle. As chops said, we do still need wine treats. It's just making sure after we've had a blow out, that we then reign it in again. Good luck with today. I know it will be hard, but you can do it.

WiseKneeHair · 17/01/2013 10:05

Doh! Should refresh before posting.
Well done Mackerel I think I would really struggle with a 500 cal day, but great if it works for you.
Welcome Maggie and well done. What is your MFP name and I'll add you?

cinnamongreyhound · 17/01/2013 12:18

Mmmmmmmm..... chocolate fingers (queue Homer style dribble!), sorry you've had a bit of a slip OneTwoOrThree! I am totally convinced if you let yourself have some of what you want you are less likely to fall off the wagon it's just being able to stop. We all need a splurge every now and then but you've logged it and today is a new day :)

Welcome MaggieMcVitie.

Glad it's going well MackeralOfFact, 5:2 is definitely not for me but it seems to work well for lots. Glad to hear you're almost back to pre December weight. Are you very short and your target is quite low (no offence intended but I'm told I'm blunt and couldn't think or another way to phrase it!)

OP posts:
MackerelOfFact · 17/01/2013 12:35

cinnamongreyhound Yes I am a shortarse, to be blunt myself! Actually, looking at the figures again I probably don't want to lose 1.5-2st, more like 1-1.5st. But I could lose another two without being underweight, apparently!

I'm not sure 5:2 is really for me either, but I've got into a habit of being quite bad over the weekend and I think it's worth trying for a while. For 500 cals I can have porridge for breakfast, soup for lunch and a salad for dinner, which isn't loads but it's do-able twice a week I think.

LittleAbruzzenBear · 17/01/2013 12:50

I have to put my hands up and say, I just ate a creme egg. Blush. Slaps own wrist. Last year I tried to not eat any choc, but it makes me go a bit mad craving it, so I figure, once or twice a week at most this year and only if I really want it.

Chopstheduck · 17/01/2013 13:00

mmmmm, cream egg!

My mum has a chocolate addiction. She keeps little freddos on standby for snacks!

Choc doesn't bother me, it's chips, and I have such a craving for KFC! I put the oil pan away when I started my diet, or I wouldn;t be able to stop making myself chippies when I get hunger pangs.

WiseKneeHair · 17/01/2013 13:07

Little did you enjoy it? We all deserve little treats. As cinnamon said, it makes it easier to keep going. They seem to have 170-180 cals in them, so quite possible to have one and say within calories.
I'm looking forward to my wine and chocolate tomorrow night. Grin
