Here is the new, shiny thread. Only three weeks or so to go until we swing into really strict mode!

Have no idea what it will be like, mind you Grin

I'm back. Had a summer of low carb-ish and was really pleased that only put on a couple of pounds during fortnights holiday. However, thought I was back on it properly this last two weeks and now able to exercise properly as well and I have gained three pounds!!! (on top of the two). So, from today I am Mfp ing again.
Just had a weekend with no alcohol too (unheard of for me) so really pi**ed off this morning. I do know I'm not drinking enough water, will go back to counting glasses and forcing them down.
I'm off to the gym.

BIWI · 17/09/2012 09:21

Welcome back!

WillieWaggledagger · 17/09/2012 09:37

Hilly nice to see you

Going back to exercise after a period away from it always seems to make me put on a little, don't know whether it's water retention? Could that be the case for you? Mine is usually followed by a whoosh a couple of weeks later

vnmum · 17/09/2012 12:04

3lb off for me this week. Think I lost it all at the beginning of the week though despite doing a few more fast days towards the end. Not complaining though.
I have played about with the fast days though and instead of trying to stick to 500 cals (really can't be arsed counting again and ending up eating low fat and low carb that day to stay in the 500, which I invariably do if I want to eat enough to feel full enough) I have been fasting from the night before and then eating a normal high fat low carb meal in the evening. I know it is probably well over the 500 cal thing so maybe that is why I haven't lost more on my subsequent fast days but will see how things go this next week.

I guess I'm not sure this fasting thing is actually benefitting me as it does other people and from what i've been reading on paleo stuff you have to be careful not to stress your body or you produce too much cortisol and start gaining flab around your middle. Apparently fasting can stress some women so maybe I am one of those and only suitable to do it every so often.

I might see what happens this week then go to an 'eat when hungry' approach rather than a strict regime

MsRinky · 17/09/2012 12:33

I have been reading a lot about the intermittent fasting stuff but I don't think it's for me. It is tempting, especially when I have a lot of social stuff on and don't manage to stick to my low-carb regime all the time, to think I could just fast a couple of days and still lose consistently, rather than accept (as I do now) that if I have a weekend away then I won't lose for a while. But I do worry about the potential for adopting what I see as fundamentally disordered eating patterns, and it doesn't seem to be as good an idea for women as it does for men.

On the other hand, I have been reading about this "Whole 30" business this weekend, and I am starting to think that I could do that for a month. Most of it would be no problem - no grains, no sugar - but in other respects it is significantly more hardcore - no dairy, no soy, no artificial sweeteners or alcohol at all.

Not sure yet. I am coming up on 6 months, and feel like I haven't lost quite as much as I wanted to and am flagging a bit. It's four months today until I hit 40 and it's really important to me to have made some serious progress, even though I know I left it too late to start to get to where I wanted to be. Maybe the new bootcamp will help.

hillyhilly · 17/09/2012 12:44

Thank you biwi and willie for the welcome back, williewaggledancer, I hope you're right about the water thing, I have something dodgy going on hormonally too so I'm blaming that.
Off to drink more water

Must drink water!
Must drink water!

clarabellabunting · 17/09/2012 13:22

Can I just ask - what's wrong with balsamic vinegar? I have been using a small amount mixed with olive oil as salad dressing when I have salad. It says 2g of carbs per tablespoon.

BIWI · 17/09/2012 13:28

FatSecret gives it as 3g carbs per tablespoon - which is a lot! Even 2g per tablespoon is more than other vinegar, which is 0g carbs.

The other reason for avoiding it is because it is sweet, and when we're low carbing we're trying to break the desire for sweet things.

OP posts:
vnmum · 17/09/2012 13:34

mrs rinky i have wondered what the whole 30 thing is. it sounds good and i could do with trying to give up dairy but i'm not sure i would get enough fat if i wasn't eating dairy as i don't always like the fat on meat (texture issue)

MsRinky · 17/09/2012 13:42

Yes, I'm generally not good with fatty meat, and currently get a lot of my fat from dairy. I think when I've got a bit of time I need to try to map out a month's worth of meals that would be Whole 30 compliant. It does seem like it would need planning of military precision.

But as from right now I am calling halt on drinking and on the few sweeteners which have crept in - sugar free jelly here, glass of sugar free squash there. Need to refocus. As with the balsamic vinegar, it isn't that they add much in the way of carbs themselves, but that they feed the taste for sweetness.

fufulina · 17/09/2012 14:00

Hello losers! Lovely day again today.

The thing with MFP and carb counts is that it is an American site, and they include fibre, or something, in the carb count, so you need the net carbs, not total carbs. Or something like that. I always try and add the British entries, tesco, Sainsburys, etc., as that gives the 'proper' counts. Not that I count carbs, but when I did to make sure I was mostly in the right sort of amount.

Still at 74.9kg today, after a carby weekend of wine, a piece of almond and plum cake, and a chicken casserole made for me, which I absolutlely wasn't prepared to pick through to remove the pasta, potatoes and carrots! But, I am the cautionary tale of what happens when you're the thinnest you've been since having babies. I had forgotten how enormous my teeth look in a smaller face. I am, currently, all teeth and ears. Great. But despite scales not moving, am still shrinking, in places that low cal never touched, namely belly and upper arms! Friends yesterday were very complimentary and even had a dropped jaw!

Off on holiday this week, so checking out for two weeks, and will be back for the
LBD bootcamp. About to mark place.

Just to say, once again, that I could not have had the success I've had with this woe without the support, recipes, information and general luffliness one these threads. So, thank you all. I am taking all my new clothes, including swimmers, on holiday, and shall be delighted to wear them.

Have a great couple of weeks, and onwards and downwards!

Smile
NigellasGuest · 17/09/2012 14:03

hello losers -
I've been quite bad recently and have given in to urges for sweets and biscuits.
Today - so far, so good. boiled egg with FF hellmans; Total yogurt with some cream and a teaspoon of cocoa powder; homemade courgette & celeriac soup.

I need to keep strong all through this evening though, as that's when it's suddenly become really tough for me again Sad

Jacaqueen · 17/09/2012 14:06

Hi everyone I have been AWOL. Again.

I am starting hardcore boot camp NOW! Right this minute. I just can't stand it anymore. I think I have lost about 2 lbs in the last 2 months.

I am going to skim over the thread, look at the new links etc and get myself in the mood to lose some serious poundage before Christmas.

Weighed in this morning at 13st bang on. It is 14 weeks to Christmas Eve and all I want for Christmas is to be 2 stone lighter.

It is good to be back. I feel better already.

Thegoddessblossom · 17/09/2012 14:06

B: greek yoghurt
L: the bacon and mushrooms with sour cream suggested by BIWI which I had for lunch instead of brekkie, served on a bed of salad leaves. Ruddy delish.

In other news:

Operation Hever Castle Triathlon has begun and I have done a 400m swim and a 4km run today. Grin

fufulina · 17/09/2012 14:07

Jaca, I've done 21 pounds, or thereabouts, in 8 weeks. Two stone is so doable in 14 weeks!

SharonGless · 17/09/2012 16:12

Welcome back to all the familiar faces - It's really good to have you back
I am looking forwards to Bootcamp I'm doing no alcohol November if anyone wants to join me

halfthesize · 17/09/2012 17:46

Eve All, welcome newbies and great to see others backSmile

I have just got the pork recipe details as sounded so nice, thats dinner tomorrow sortedGrin

Its totm for me, weight sts not surprising really. Just marked place on LBDBC thread, cant wait, need to get re-motivated. sharon I was thinking the same re the no alcohol, but mine will need to be for October as shed loads of birthdays(DH, DM and DMIL) and my anniversary in November.

Breakfast was skipped
Lunch - left over pork with salad
Dinner - bacon, egg, mushrooms
Lots of water today and 2 hours at the gym working hardSmile

queribus · 17/09/2012 18:14

Hello again

Quite a good day, I think

B scrambled eggs and mushrooms
L red pepper stuffed with spicy quorn

dinner will be roast pork

PeoniesPlease · 17/09/2012 18:22

Well, today has been a good day so far, I think.

b: salami, olives and 10 almonds
l: grilled chicken with salad and a glass of white wine (was out for lunch)
d: sausage casserole with cabbage and mashed turnips

I'm still learning at this, so counting carbs on fitday at the moment. Should come out to about 35 net carbs today I think.

I'm going to try the bacon, mushrooms and sour cream for my breakfast tomorrow! Yum!

SingingTunelessly · 17/09/2012 18:51

Hello! Back from holiday so avoiding the scales but don't think it should be too bad. deluded

Will look for LBD thread.

Viper, think you've gone on holiday now but hope its a good one.

Sharon, errr, is that no alcohol for the WHOLE of the month?! Although if we're Bootcamping I guess that's right. Mmmm. I will join you. lies

dollyxdaydreamer · 17/09/2012 19:03

Hi BIWI I just PM'd you Smile

dollyxdaydreamer · 17/09/2012 19:14

MsRinky and vnmum, I'm intrigued by this "Whole 30" business as well, but like the both of you I'm a bit squeamish regarding fatty meat and prefer my fat through eating dairy. I agree the only way to work the whole 30 thing would be to map out the month's meals and plan plan plan. It would be a challenge, but doable. If every meal was planned for that would take out half of the challenge.
I bet that it would be immensely rewarding at the end of the 30 days.

fails to mention there are 30 days in November

BIWI · 17/09/2012 19:22

What is this whole 30 of which you are speaking?!

dolly - have sent you the spreadsheet.

halfthesize · 17/09/2012 19:29
