Here is the new, shiny thread. Only three weeks or so to go until we swing into really strict mode!

MNP · 13/09/2012 23:45

Evening.

Can I join the SW Chapter, am in Dorset.

I find I IF most days in that I am not eating until after 2pm and then am finished by 8pm.

But weight is so slooooowwwwww to go, ho hum.

OliviaLMumsnet · 14/09/2012 00:17

@BIWI

What do you need to know/do, Olivia?

Bootcamp rules (revised) are here

Right.

I need help with

breakfasts as always - am NOT good in the morning and am only on week 2 of proper, cannot be late, school run mornings.

I have one of those kegs of whey powder but not sure if it is low carb enough - if I find it online will one of you tell me if it is or not, please?

I need to get some meal plans together for the first few days and maybe do some preps (e.g. those egg/sausage mc muffin things from IPD)

OH yes, and ave massive refurb/renovations going on and likely during october which is when I want/need to be boot camping, I will be sans kitchen Shock

Oh and another thing I Mumsnet work in the evenings and am up late and get peckish and so need something snacky for then that won't undo all my hard work...

Am up late catching up with rest of life on the nights I don't work so usually not in bed much before this time.

TIA bootcampers

Also how far into bootcamp can we have booze - tis my birthday 4 weeks in....

Viperidae · 14/09/2012 00:21

Just popping in to say hello and goodbye for a little while as I am off to portugal tomorrow for a week.

I'm going to chill out and not stress about food while away but will rejoin you and be ready for bootcamp.

I have been good though, have survived 2 meals out without cheating, could never have done that on SW.

See you all in a week or so!

WillieWaggledagger · 14/09/2012 04:21

Can't sleep (it's the chocolate wot done it grr)

Olivia is it that you don't actually feel like eating breakfast and have to force yourself? If that's the case then you don't HAVE to eat at that time if you won't later be at risk of getting over hungry and eating the wrong things. You could hold off until after the school run? Otherwise leftovers are good or as you suggest premade crustless quiches, or a couple of hardboiled eggs

Have a lovely holiday viper!

TellMeLater · 14/09/2012 06:18

I'm sitting right there with you BIWI, 5:2 fasting, low carbing and exercising like a woman possessed and those last few pounds and just clinging on. It's almost impossible to tell if I've lost any weight as the scales and bobbing up and down like crazy.

sybilfaulty · 14/09/2012 06:33

Hello all

I have had a mega week and been too tired to post, but I have been reading and trying to keep up.

Haven't seen lots of my colleagues for 6 weeks and the compliments have been flowing. I feel so pleased and inspired to carry on. As I have been working late, I seem to have inadvertently had 4 days of bootcamp as there has been no time for snacking and only good food and fats. Really kept me going. Did have some wine last night and really feel it now, so perhaps am losing the taste for that a bit too (foresee vineyards across France closing as a result).

Can I ask - where are you all getting your celeriac? Am desperate to try some of the lovely recipes but I can't find it in any of the big supermarkets. (Willie - it gives me wind, too, or it used to, so perhaps it's for the best that I can'[t find it.)

Off to make lunches and do school run, then am going to go for a lovely swim. Thank you preschool.

Have a great day y'all.

TellMeLater · 14/09/2012 06:40

Cybil Waitrose sell celeriac.

halfthesize · 14/09/2012 08:14

Morning ladies, cybil tesco also sell itSmile

Viperidae have a fab time in Portugal.

I'm off shopping today for some winter clothes, so skipping breakfast(not hungry again)

Got roast duck for dinner, but not sure about lunch as will be out, have a good day everyone x

Totallycluelessmum · 14/09/2012 08:25

Hi there...delurking to ask a question, hope that's OK!
I had a stone to lose, lost 10ib on Dukan then got stuck, tried the IF thing for a couple of weeks, still stuck. So I followed your bootcamp rules and things are moving again...YAY! 1lb to target.
Sooooo....my question is do you have to lose more weight than your target to allow for when the water/glycogen bit comes back if you eat more carbs or do you gradually increase your good carbs? I plan to maintain on a 5:2 IF with lowish carbs.
Thanks!!!

BIWI · 14/09/2012 08:37

Have a great holiday, Viperidae!

Princess - if it's working for you, then that's fine. But remember that you shouldn't be restricting your calories in preference to eating the kind of foods that are appropriate for low carbing - fat especially. Remember that we are supposed to be eating fat:protein:carbs - and not carbs:protein:fat!

TellMe - I don't think I'm quite exercising to the point that you are. I'm very impressed by your dedication Grin

Olivia - hmm. You do have a difficult time coming up, don't you?! Planning ahead will be your saviour. This WOE is a bugger anyway, if you don't do that, but it's going to be even more important for you.

Re the breakfast thing - as Willie says, the risk with not eating breakfast is that you'll get ravenous mid-morning and end up doing a face-plant into the biscuit tin. The whole point about having three meals a day, (without snacking), including breakfast, is to keep our blood sugar levels stable - which means we won't be hungry as well as the fact that this will help us lose weight.

I can't help you with the whey powder, I'm afraid, as I've never tried any of them. I prefer real food Grin. but useful things to have in the fridge that you can grab for your breakfast would be hard-boiled eggs, cooked (low carb) sausages, slices of ham/smoked salmon. These are also lovely if you roll them around some cream cheese and black pepper. Another approach to take is to treat breakfast like it's lunch or dinner - no need to treat is like a special meal. Have a salad - or have leftovers from dinner the night before.

Re no kitchen - will you have a microwave? If not, then it's lots of salads for you, which are perfect on LC!

And you can drink alcohol after the first fortnight of Bootcamp! most people ignore that rule anyway

BIWI · 14/09/2012 08:38

Oh, and another three-quarters of a pound down - making it a loss of 1.75lbs for me since Monday! Now weighing in at 9 stones 9.5 pounds. 2.5lbs to my next target.

OP posts:
hazchem · 14/09/2012 09:00

Good news here. My partner's Visa has been granted! so we really are off to OZ. It's a huge weight off our shoulders. Now I really need to work to get the weight of my tummy.

I've been using MFP the last two days and this has really really helped me stay a bit more in control. yesterday I only had 15 grams of carbs Grin

Breakfast left over lamb belly and a fried egg!
No plans for lunch/dinner have to get soem food in the house today.

Oliva what about doing a low carb yoghurt pot. Layers of greek yoghurt/berries/ small amount of chopped nuts. You could make it up the night before. Then either eat in the morning or when you first sit down at your desk. This has the bonus of not really needing a kitchen too.

EwanHoozami · 14/09/2012 09:40

I'm v impressed with all this exercise. It's great for the energy levels when you get the right level of activity, isn't it?

So I had an interesting chat with a pal who's a long-term LC'er. She was telling me about the supplements she takes - Magnesium, Chromium, B vits and Kelp in pretty high doses. Does anyone else take these? I have a decent multivit but not sure if that's enough anymore.

BIWI · 14/09/2012 09:42

I take a combined calcium, magnesium and vitamin D supplement
I also take a Berocca (although this is more for general health), and a menopause supplement.

If you're low carbing 'properly', you will be getting the vits/minerals you need from your food

Great news, hazchem! I suppose we'll have to get used to talking to you at different times of the day now!

fufulina · 14/09/2012 09:49

Morning all, haven't posted for a while as have had mum staying, and settling dd into a new pre-school. Have lost my way slightly and can feel the carb creep! Too much dark chocolate and wine. And considering I don't normally drink that much, that's an arse. And finding too much cheese and cream and berries. But, to counter balance that, I've now competed 8 weeks of this woe and slow and steady wins the race! This is a woe, NOT a diet, so if I'm not perfect all the time, it's not a disaster, as I need to find a way of eating that is sustainable for life. I never want to tip the scales at over 100kg again!

So, back on it today with proper, clean low carb to push on down. I weighed in at 75kg on the nose this morning, so it is slow going.

All this chat of fasting also reminds me that when I am proper low carbing, I find missing breakfast most pleasing. With the carb creep, I've noticed that I haven't skipped breakfast once in over a week.

Think that the terminology is confusing me also. Briffa talks about IF as being a number of hours without food, or reducing the eating window, whereas the 5:2 is more about the whole not eating and then reducing calories for the day. I'm in the briffa camp for IF, as like BIWI, I get obsessive on the calorie counting and not in a good way!

In other news, have now bought new more clothes (with birthday money) than I've bought since before dd1, and am feeling great about self and lots of comments from mum. Who, incidentally, wants to do it, but can't live without her skimmed milk, or cake... But she's doing lc, apparently! I have warned her repeatedly that if she doesn't do it properly, it's just high carb, high fat and the weight will stack on, but I don't think it's registering...

Hazchem, are you moving to oz permanently? Congrats on the visa.
viper, have a fab holiday.
Half, enjoy the clothes shopping.

Saw a few of you on the CatMo web chat, too! Luff her.

Have great weekends all.

OliviaLMumsnet · 14/09/2012 10:12

oh I am hungry at breakfast I am mostly ready to eat all the time Grin
Just don't have time to do bacon & eggs etc.... (which is my preference) so did try the whey powder before...

We do have a microwave and the freezer isn't in the kitchen so can hopefully plan ahead.

Am I right in remembering that we're meant to be avoiding sausages....?

vnmum · 14/09/2012 11:23

ewan I take a multivit plus omega 3 fish oil. The list of supplements your friend takes, i don't think is solely down to the fact she low carbs. As far as i am aware, alot of the population is low on b vits regardless of what diet they eat. Chromium i think is to tackle cravings and regulate blood sugar, not sure about magnesium although it is in my multivit. Kelp is for the iodine to keep the thyroid working properly. Although it has been mentioned that lowcarbing can lower your thyroid hormones, i don't think it is something that is exclusive to a low carb diet. I am sure that thyroid function can be affected by low cal too due to the decrease in metabolism that happens on those diets. I have considered taking kelp though as i don't want thyroid problems later on as they are hard to correct but i would take it even if i wasn't low carbing because not many of us eat enough seaweed etc to get the correct dose of iodine in our diets

BIWI · 14/09/2012 11:48

Olivia - you can buy plenty of low carb sausages (although they do tend to be the expensive ones). Sainsbury's stock The Black Farmer ones which are lovely - although at £2.79 not exactly a bargain!

Thegoddessblossom · 14/09/2012 12:30

Afternoon all lowcarbers!

Breakfast was a leftover chicken breast with a spoonful of leftover cream cheese and pesto. Tea and Berocca.

Was a pound up to 9 2 this morning, not a tragedy, but a direct result of too many nuts.

Swam a mile this morning.

Off for a low carb lunch at the work protein counter. Am really hungry!

Have a great holiday Viper! Grin

Congrats on Visa Haz, am jealous, would love to emigrate - am half Aussie and have been there many times. Have family in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and near Dubbo. Live in Manly Beach for a while.

vnmum · 14/09/2012 12:43

I'd better not let DH read this thread with all you aussies on here Smile. He has been mentioning emigrating for quite a while. He wants to join the aussie army but from what we have gathered it may not be as finacially beneficial as he thought, especially as it appears he would get taxed twice on his uk forces pension, once by our government and once by aussie government, plus the extra costs like healthcare etc that we obviously don't pay here.

I feel it would be too far from my family and I don't like the idea of creepy crawlies but that doesn't stop him from trying to twist my arm regularly Smile

ewan I am currently reading Robb Wolff 'the paleo solution'. Very interesting for everyone really, goes quite indepth as to the role insulion plays in cancer and many other diseases. It has certainly made me glad I eat this way but in a way more adamant I want to try and change my parents diet and friends etc (that may never happen though). Anyway, to get to my point. I have just read a chapter mentioning supplements and they mentioned magnesium. Apparently magnesium is for bone health and we should supplement with that rather than calcium as it keeps the calcium in the bones and excess calcium leached from the bones (by increased insulin) and via supplementation if insulin is in play calcifies the cholestril deposits on arteries and can also cause the blood clots that lead to cardio vascular disease. The explanation is more in depth in the book but though I would mention it as in my previous post I didn't know why supplementing with magnesium would be done.

I am also feeling the cold already. I know I have less insulation this year but I have resorted to buying a thermal vest. The thing I am struggling with thoigh is finding some nice knitwear. I don't want baggy or chunky knit stuff that just makes you look big but then all the other jumpers or cardigans I find seem to be a bit old womanish. I am 35 and don't want to look twee Smile. It may be that I don't know how to put an outfit together to make these jumpers look young but if anyone has seen any nice knitwear, please let me know where Smile

Thegoddessblossom · 14/09/2012 12:50

VNMum - I think Next have some nice knitwear bits

teaandthorazine · 14/09/2012 12:52

Afternoon losers.

Just sitting here scoffing lunch while I should be writing my interview presentation. It's one of those 'Why would anyone not eat this way?!' meals - parma ham, cold roast chicken, olives, cheese, cucumber and a generous dollop of mayo. Have also supplemented with a couple of small felafel - only 3g of carb each so I figure pretty harmless...

Dinner tonight is Friday Takeaway. I fancy green spice chicken tikka, aubergine or mushroom bhaji and some saag paneer - YUM!

Interesting re: supplements - I did take chromium and magnesium when I started lc but kinda forgot about them... will search cupboards!

Think I will also order that Eat Like A Dinosaur book.

EwanHoozami · 14/09/2012 13:24

vnmum Thanks thank you - that's really interesting, especially about magnesium. My mate has often mentioned concerns about her thyroid so that explains the kelp!

my taste never matches my budget when it comes to knitwear as I'm a fabric snob and can't stand acrylic, but Uniqlo, Kookai and Urban Outfitters are all good for non-Nana knitwear on the high street. Shame, you've just missed the Crumpet outlet sale
