Throwing new fuel on the Bootcamp Camp Fire

Here is the new, shiny thread. Only three weeks or so to go until we swing into really strict mode!

Banana is probably one of the most carb-heavy fruits there is! If you want fruit (and you're not on Bootcamp), go for strawberries or raspberries instead.

Made the most wonderful fish pie last night. No recipe, I was just throwing it together as I went along. It was just hake and chopped spinach in a cream, cream cheese and cheddar sauce topped with cauliflower mashed with butter and more cheddar and topped with yet more cheddar and baked. Oh yes, cheese overload, you can tell I was cold and tired yesterday. :).

Eldest son was at work so I saved him a portion and didn't bother taking off the cauliflower topping. He hates cauli with a passion but utterly failed to notice it and ate the lot in seconds flat. Result!

teaandthorazine · 13/09/2012 10:00

Well, last nights dinner was a mixed bag. Started off with tapas-style stuff - grilled veg, chorizo etc which wasn't too bad. The rest of the menu was rather strange, ended up with a v dull choice of burger with comte cheese, left the bun! did have a few chips with a very garlicky mayo. no pud (though was tempted by choc and salted caramel tart!) but worked on the basis that since the mains were disappointing the pud was unlikely to be worth it! hmmm, restaurant deffo trying too hard though... Came home with indigestion - go figure...

Today, probably nothing until lunch, which will be salad, and then roast chicken tonight if I get home on time!

BIWI · 13/09/2012 10:25

OMG. Absolutely brutal gym session this morning. I was - literally - dripping sweat on the floor!. If that doesn't see off some more weight I will be cross!

Whippoorwhill that fish pie sounds fab - I'm a terrible one for adding just a bit more cheese too Grin. But thankfully it doesn't seem to matter too much - I'd be devastated if dairy stalled me!

Meant to say yesterday, saw a friend on tues that I've not seen at all over the summer. She did a proper 'look you up and down' double take when she saw me in the playground, but didn't say a word. Not a word. Thing is, she's obsessed with her own weight, devoted to low-fat and calorie counting. She told me once that even slightly overweight people disgusted her - it's a real thing for her. I love her dearly but I know full well that she'll be irritated that I've lost so much and am now giving her a good run for her money in the flat tummy stakes...

GoldenOrangeWhippoorwhill · 13/09/2012 10:52

Aw Tea, I sorry your meal was a disappointment. I think you made a wise choice avoiding the puddings.

I'm a cheese fiend. Previously I've lost a lot of weight eating low fat and it was always cheese that I craved and was frequently my downfall. Interestingly since low carbing I've not eaten as much as usual (except for yesterday), probably because it's not forbidden. Grin

Your friends reaction is awesome. A far truer response to how fab you're looking than the usual comments. How wonderful is it that you can make someone green with envy!

IWipeArses · 13/09/2012 11:00

Hello there low-carbers, been lurking a little. Smile I've been attempting to follow Paleo for several months and think it's the fruit, nuts and carby veg that keeps causing me to end up on a binge. One of the problems of having the littlies around is there being so much fruit!

May I ask what you do about family meals, how much difference is there between your meal and what the DH/DC eat?

vnmum · 13/09/2012 11:02

golden i really wish i hadn't read your post about fish pie. I am fasting today and just reading it has made my mouth water Grin. It sounds delish.

I need to get more adventurous with veg to try and get the dc to eat something other than salad. Granted they will polish off salad without complaints but put cauli, broccoli, courgette and most other veg except carrots in front of them and they won't eat it. Even cauli cheese didn't work. Any ideas gratefully recieved Smile

vnmum · 13/09/2012 11:11

iwipe my dc eat what i eat except they get baked treats like almond pancakws or muffins and they eat a peice of fruit a day usually. I generally don't eat fruit. Occasionally i will give them potatoes with their evening meal, say maybe once a week, and very rarely they will get white rice (considered a safe grain according to mark sissons). I make sure they get fat in their diet and some form of veg with lunch and tea. I don't worry about the carb count of their veg as they are growing and don't need to lose weight. The main thing i stick to is no grains and processed food.

The change in them since i started feeding them paleo is very noticeable. Their mood and behaviour is better and they aren't pestering for snacks constantly. DS has taken to it really well and understands why we don't eat grains anymore, DD (4) has not quite grasped it and will easily eat junk at friends etc but she is young and it will come in time.

I got a book called 'eat like a dinosaur' which had a good story i read to them to explain why we were eating that way. The authors have a blog called paleoparents.

The more i read about grains, the more i firmly believe that cutting them out of my DC's diet will give them great health benefits in the future

GoldenOrangeWhippoorwhill · 13/09/2012 11:25

Sorry vnmum! This thread must be torture for fasters. I notice food talk is discouraged on the 5:2 threads. :)

IWipe, I cook the same food for everyone. The adults are all low carbing and in general the kids don't mind. One loves veggies and is plenty happy with this WOE but the other hates most veg except salad so I will sometimes add rice or potatoes to theirs. They are teenagers though and eat all kinds of junk when out but I'm mean and make them buy it themselves.

They actually insisted on being totally low carb when doing their exams this summer as it helped thrn concentrate. The youngest is Aspergers and ADHD and you can see a real difference in his concentration when he's not been eating junk.

I spent years making dinners with hidden vegetables for the oldest and to be fair he's pretty good now. As long as the veg is in small pieces and cooked in the gravy or sauce so that it doesn't taste identifiable then he will eat pretty much anything. He loves blended veg soups, particularly broccolli and stilton and leek, caulflower and potato. He's also fine with raw veg so lots of slaws of various kinds, cauli or broccolli in peanut (or almond) butter dressing, green beans, carrot sticks etc.

He's off to Uni in just over a week so I presume he won't eat another vegetable until he comes home again. :)

GoldenOrangeWhippoorwhill · 13/09/2012 11:31

Oh, totally off topic, vnmum, I just saw you on another thread and think you must live reasonably close to me. I'm in Salisbury

TellMeLater · 13/09/2012 11:35

My dcs fit in with what we're eating, mostly I'm a from scratch cook, so when they get bread - it's home made. They no longer have cereals for breakfast except oats. I make them spelt pancakes in the morning or eggs; a big favourite is smoothies, which they make themselves. I try to feed them clean food, they have whole grain free rice and pasta and their food is as free from additives as is practical. Their sweet treats are homemade, ice creams are sometimes homemade but always dairy.

They have requested I make them packed lunches and I will only do this if they eat what I make them - otherwise I'll make them go back to school dinners and my food tastes infinitely better

Tonight we're having steak with roasted veg and broc - they'll have some roasted potatoes with skins. Last night we had curry with cauli rice, they had it with brown rice. We have spaghetti squash, they have wholemeal spaghetti. We had a lamb and green bean stew with broc, they had it with barley couscous.
And despite what someone else on this board has suggested about people who low carb - we eat with our kids and always have done as a rule. Our kids are skinny, but they are not fussy, will try anything from snails to tripe to the smelliest cheese available.

I just bought the book Eat like a Dinosaur at the weekend....I've yet to read it thoroughly, I don't think we'll go down the route of banning wheat products, the kids might make that decision themselves - but at the moment, dds favourite food in the whole world is pasta - I can't deprive her of that - tasty food is good for the soul!

roofergirl · 13/09/2012 11:45

But the Banana felt so right at the time so I don't feel too guilty. Just had a shock when I looked it up... I have a friend who is on the 30 Bananas a day diet!

GoldenOrangeWhippoorwhill · 13/09/2012 11:55

30 bananas a DAY????? Shock

IWipeArses · 13/09/2012 12:06

30 bananas a day? The diarrhea diet????

Thanks for the insights. DS is a picky carb fiend, DD is 11 months and changeable and DH mainly eats beige, meat, potatoes, pasta, bread, cheese and hot sauce.
I think I could get the house wheat/grain-free, keep some rice and potatoes for the others.

Packed lunches could be tricky, what do you put in them?

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 13/09/2012 12:14

30 bananas a day? Wow. How is that supposed to work?

BIWI · 13/09/2012 12:16

Bleurgh Grin

OP posts:
Thegoddessblossom · 13/09/2012 12:22

hello all.

B: greek yoghurt
L will be eggs when I get round to it.

BIWI - I ALWAYS sweat on the floor. I am quite a sweaty betty (TMI) get it from my Dad I think Grin Dripped all over the bike at the gym this morning (nice - I do clean it after).

My DSs's diet hasn't changed much, they still eat far too much sweet stuff, mainly because their (overweight) childminder gives them all sorts of shit for pudding after tea. I have told her repeatedly that 1 pudding is quite sufficient, and if they are having fruit they don't need ice cream, sugar and cream with it, and not to go to the sweetie shop after school, but I'm not sure it's made much difference TBH. And as she is a gem in all other respects I don't want to get Nazi. When with me, they eat fish, eggs, lots of veg and are not overweight, so.....I have pretty much completely stopped feeding them pasta though, as I can't quite bring myself to make it for them.

Protein shakes? Flavours? Link? pleeeeeeease?

PrincessSparkle86 · 13/09/2012 12:49

Afternoon

Ive decided dinner tonight will be braised beef steak with vegetables for me ( and roasties for the men of the house).

I always seem to see people mention 'eating paleo on this thread... And i still dont know why it means... Is it eating low carb or something else???

vnmum · 13/09/2012 13:25

ooh golden I am just outside Amesbury, very near the stones. Not sure if I will make the Frome meetup but nothing stopping us getting together if you want seen as we are so close. I could do with adult company when DH goes Smile

Tellmelater What do you mean about someone else on this board suggseting low carbers don't eat with their children? Haven't seen that, maybe we need to defend ourselves yet again.

Iwipe For packed lunches I put in cold meats, cooked sausages, cheese, greek yoghurt, pepper or carrot sticks, sometimes melon, coleslaw, mayo for dipping, almond muffin and it seems to fill them up. I wish they would eat alives etc as that would be good for fat to fill them but I try and just balance it out with protein and fat and veg.

goddess Protein shake this is the one tea uses I think and I am thinking of trying it. You can get sample sachets of the flavour for 99p but I have found with the shakes that vanilla is usually a safe bet, some of the fruit and choc ones can be a bit sweet but tea may be able to help more with flavours

princess Paleo is generally low carb. It is about eating natural foods, no grains. Some say not to eat dairy either. There are 3 main players in the paleo world AFAIK if you want to do some research. They are : Mark Sissons of 'Mark's daily apple' blog and 'The Primal blueprint', Robb Wolff who wrote 'the paleo solution' and Loren Cordain. Robb Wolff and Loren Cordain's views differ slightly to Mark Sissons but alot of people on here read marks blog and quote links off there etc. HTH

GoldenOrangeWhippoorwhill · 13/09/2012 13:48

Vnmum. My Mum and Dad live in Amesbury. :) I definitely won't be making the Frome meetup but getting together would be fun. Son heads off to Uni next weekend and after that I'm free pretty much all the time. My husband is working away a lot and much as I love the boys it would be nice to have a conversation that didn't revolve around computer games.

Boggling at the idea of low carbers not eating with their kids. I'd think it would suit family eating far better than low fat and certainly better than those meal replacement things. Hell, not only do I eat with my family but I often get them to make the food! Wink

vnmum · 13/09/2012 14:02

golden I have PM'd you re the meet up.

TellMeLater · 13/09/2012 14:22

Eating day today after fast day yesterday. Fasting has made me crave low carb food in a way I never felt possible. So for anyone feeling deprived while low carbing, try fasting for a day and you'll put things into perspective.

Breakfast 2 M&S 93% premium pork sausages - only 1.8g carbs/100g and no horrid dried herbs, best sausages ever! Pea purée is used as a binder for those who like it wheat free. Then total yoghurt with blackberries.
Elevensees a few spoonfuls of lamb and green bean stew leftovers.

Lunch cream cheese pancakes with strawberry yoghurt - I am obsessed with these things, I have plans to use the pancakes to make the spinach ham and cheese pancakes featured on Hugh's programme last night. And on the Ibreathe website she uses them as a substitute for lasagna and I will be making that one soon too.

Dinner Rib eye steak with excessive amounts of butter, roasted mushrooms, shallots & courgettes with steamed green beans. Dcs will have roast pots.

Drinks: half bottle of wine - to be opened this evening!

Am away this weekend and I have no control over the menu, I think it's going to be a carby one and it's not the place to be fussy. Bread and pasta will feature heavily! But I'll survive Grin

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 13/09/2012 14:33

Question: am just starting to wean DD. We're attempting BLW with varying levels of success. The trouble is that a lot of fruit is just too slippery for her to hold onto. If she picks up banana chunks, for example, they just ping out of her grasp. I'm trying to think of non-slippery foods and thought of toast. I'm just a bit wary of starting her on bread/gluten! What would you do?

Thegoddessblossom · 13/09/2012 14:55

Thanks VNMum! Will get that.

I have rellies in Amesbury (BIL, SIL, DN and MIL!)

In a change to the previously published schedule, lunch was not eggs, but a big mackerel and coleslaw salad.

TLM can you link to the cream cheese pancakes please? Might have to give them a go....
