Here is the new, shiny thread. Only three weeks or so to go until we swing into really strict mode!

I'm trying it, Wilf. But keeping quiet on The Other Thread after being told off for advocating low carb!

I'm not sure about it, although today is only day 2. And I am prepared to give it another go next week (especially as the scales have moved for me already this week, and I'm now the lightest I have been in years).

What I struggle with/find myself resisting, is the whole idea of counting calories. I hated doing it before, because it makes me obsessive. And I start to focus on what I can't have instead of what I can, IYSWIM.

But - nothing ventured, nothing gained! Briffa's view, now, has also changed - from initially 'you must eat three meals a day' to 'eat when you're hungry', and he often misses breakfast too.

I can do the missing breakfast thing and then eating 'normally'. I'm trying to do missing breakfast + lower calorie meals the rest of the day, so we'll see how that goes.

I am doing it too wilf although I didn't do many fast days last week but I am doing alternate day fasts but still eating low carb on feed and fast days. BIWI I found the first couple of fast days a bit more hard work than normal low carb days but now I seem to have slotted into a pattern and it feel ok. Is your new weight after the fast day or did you weigh this morning after eating yesterday?

BIWI · 12/09/2012 17:26

My first day of fasting was Monday, and so yesterday was a 'normal' day.

Monday and Tuesday my weight was the same - it's today that it dropped, which is interesting. (I went to the gym yesterday).

Today is another fasting day, so we'll see what the scales say tomorrow - I'm also off to the gym again tomorrow, but will weigh before I go.

Interesting article free to download here about IF by Zoe Harcombe

Yay, I've been visited by the whoosh fairy. Despite two meals out, insane amounts of butter and cream, an awful lot of red wine and some 80% chocolate I've lost 3 pounds since last week. It's not TOTM either.

Very odd but I'm not complaining. Just bought some size 14 jeans though and I already need a belt. Not sure if that should be :) or :(

BIWI · 12/09/2012 17:37

Yay! I would say it's a Grin more than a Smile and definitely not a Sad

Hmmm the fasting thing is tempting but I feel like I'm not ready for it.

I have managed however to actually write down what I have eaten today and worked out how many carbs. So after a rubbish start I've only had 23g of carbs. I also reread the section in Escape the diet trap and Briffa says the in moderation food really should be one at one meal a day and recommends not having them for the first couple of weeks.

I'm going to have a read of the Hardcombe article.

Thegoddessblossom · 12/09/2012 20:06

sorry to be a pain but please can someone link to the protein shakes they use and advise on preferred flavours?

Thanking you, oh people of bootcamp.

EwanHoozami · 12/09/2012 20:08

I've just spotted on the jar that my sainsbo kalamata olives are zero carb. Can this be true?!

I've been really quite bloated the last couple of days. I've been necking about 3.5-4 litres of water and haven't been cheating (for the first time on any weight loss attempt ever ) so is it normal? Too much salt, maybe? I don't usually eat much but I've been scarfing quite a bit of butter. Hum.

BIWI · 12/09/2012 20:19

Bloating isn't normal - is it water retention? Is it your TOM? Have you been eating a lot of processed (i.e. salty) food?

How much do you weigh/how tall are you?

OP posts:
EwanHoozami · 12/09/2012 20:25

I'm 5'7" and weighed 12-and-a-bit stone on some unreliable and scales a week ago. (I've ordered some decent ones)

Unlikely to be TOM unless mega-early. Aside from the butter and the occasional slice of ham I thought I'd been OK on the salty/processed front.

I do have to take ibuprofen for a dicky hip quite frequently so maybe that's the culprit.

I feel pretty good otherwise - tons of energy!

MsRinky · 12/09/2012 20:34

My dinner tonight was divine. Haddock on spinach and samphire in lemon butter with a clam, shallot and creme fraiche sauce. I love eating this way so much, losing the weight is almost just an added bonus rather than the whole point.

Thegoddessblossom · 12/09/2012 20:34

Tea: 3 bacon, 2 egg, cabbage and mushrooms all fried in butter and oil in the same pan. Yumble. 2 glasses of red.

BIWI · 12/09/2012 20:38

Hmm. Ewan, not sure what to recommend, as you're eating enough water. And I'm not sure ibuprofen would cause bloating, although I know it can impede weight loss.

How about some exercise? Get things moving, as it were!

HumphreyCobbler · 12/09/2012 20:41

I want your dinner MsRinky Envy

EwanHoozami · 12/09/2012 20:45

Cheers BIWI - I have been looking a little glumly at my Shred DVD. If I can ignore the 3yo howling with laughter as I do it, I'll give it another go Grin

HumphreyCobbler · 12/09/2012 21:04

My three year old joins in. I give her duplo blocks for weights.

If I cheat she tells me off Grin

I had a read of the Harcombe article, she seems to write in a very emotional style and it doesn't come across as an impartial piece of analysis. For example she states that the programme suggested that IGF-1 was affected by protein and complains that the programme failed to prove that. Now it's a one hour programme, they can't provide proof and go into extreme detail for every statement they make, I googled the IGF-1/protein relationship and came up with a study which supported the idea without too much effort, why couldn't she?

To be honest I think she has her own drum to beat - selling her diet. The 5:2 diet will not help her sell the Harcombe diet - which is surely her ultimate goal.

OrangeEyesDoMoreThanSee · 12/09/2012 23:21

Still about, just maintaining low(er) carb diet until bootcamp kicks in again in a few weeks.

BIWI · 13/09/2012 08:02

Hmm. Maybe, TellMe - but I still thought it was interesting - especially as she then goes on to give a pretty positive assessment of IF, at least for weight loss purposes. And let's be realistic - there aren't many (if any, I would argue) posters here who are fasting because of their long term health. It's all about the pounds and ounces!

As for me, yesterday was a supposed fast day - I had:

Nothing until 12.30 - 2 fried eggs and leftover celeriac boulangere
Afternoon - small portion of yoghurt
Evening - the same as for lunch because it was so yummy and I couldn't be arsed to cook anything else
2 coffees, Berocca and 3 litres water

That was certainy more than 500 calls but I doubt it was a massive amount over.

And I'm down by anther 1/4 pound this morning, so now 9.10 and 1/4.

Morning ladies Smile

Weighing in at 85.8 this morning Grin

Breaky was 2 slices of roast pork loin.
Not sure about the rest of the day yet! X

TellMeLater · 13/09/2012 08:18

I agree that the number of people fasting who don't want to lose any weight is probably quite small, I just felt a lot of negativity in her article, she wasn't seeking the truth...

WillieWaggledagger · 13/09/2012 08:35

have found this site with low carb baking and puddings healthyindulgences.net/ (apologies if it has been linked before)

it's definitely not for bootcamp, nor for everyday, and frankly if i'm going to indulge i think i'd prefer the real deal rather than stuff with sweeteners, but it's grain-free and it might be interesting to try some of the recipes out

roofergirl · 13/09/2012 08:41

Oh dear, couldn't resist a couple of bites of banana this morning. Seems one whole big banana is 50g carbs Shock.
