We could keep chatting here until someone starts a new proper thread...

My pleasure! You don't need breadcrumbs or egg to bind it together - but you do need to handle them carefully. The trick is to put them into a hot pan and then leave them - don't keep flipping them. Once they're browned on the underside they are easy to turn without them falling apart.

(And if you are using steak mince then you don't have to cook them for long - you can serve them rare if you like)

WillieWaggledagger · 24/08/2012 07:13

Biwi you're right re egg Heston blumenthal says you just need enough salt as that acts as a binding agent

hazchem · 24/08/2012 08:07

Morning all
I'm thinking of making almond meal pancakes for breaky on saturday and the recipe calls for sweetener. I'm not that keen on using them but wondered if say that Truvia stuff might be better for this WOE. I guess I feel like this WOE is a nice clean diet (as in everything you eat is your diet) and making something then putting sweeteners in sort of ruins that.

Netheregions · 24/08/2012 08:21

Morning all! - happy you like the brekky! tis yummy - and singing yes, think you would struggle to follow the baked eggs with a lunch option, we often have it as 'brunch' so it kills two birds with one stone as it were Smile

[BIWI] Ahhhh... perhaps where I'm going wrong with my burger recipe, I'll try your no egg option and see if I can decipher which mince is steak mince in Albert Hein.

DP swooshed by yesterday after work and took DS and I into Nijmegen where we took in the city and had supper at a Turkish restaurant on the river front (lots of low carb options - have to admit to fritje (fries) nibbling from a shared portion though Blush), the Rijne is navigated by broad, low freight barges and river cruiseliners, great for ds to watch and it's freshers week at the university so the city was buzzing and at it's best in the late evening sunshine.

Yes - Chocolate sprinkles for breakfast (Hagelslag) Confused Confused Confused

Netheregions · 24/08/2012 08:24

Hi hazchem - in the low carb gourmet it suggests Splenda is the best as the compound stays chemically stable when heated unlike many other sweeteners.

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 24/08/2012 08:56

Yay, back down to 10 stone 2.5! Only a pound to go to work off last weekend's cheats.

Fufulina, I had pork chops with cream and mushrooms last night too! Done in the frying pan, not the oven, though. Also green beans - not sure how carby they are, but FIL had grown them himself and brought them as a gift, so we had to eat them. And they were yummy!

vnmum · 24/08/2012 10:31

Morning all.
hazchem i have a recipe for almond pancakes that requires no sweetner. I made them for DC twice and they loved them. It is :
1 cup almond flour (american cup)
2 eggs
1\4 cup milk
2 tbsp coconut oil, melted
1 tsp baking powder

Just make sure they are browned on the bottom and reasonably firm before turning over.

DH is back now and i have realised he scuppers my plans because he uses sugary marinades on meat without thinking, like last night, so i am going to have to lay down the law Smile. At least i can get to the gym today now. Gym going will be much easier once DC are back at school.
I don't know about anyone else but this month seems really long.

halfthesize · 24/08/2012 11:46

thanks again BIWI, will be making the burgers tomorrow.

vnmum know what you mean re long month, I have hardly been to the gym and I hate not going, 2 weeks to go and then will be back their most daysSmile

Brunch was omelette and salad.

hazchem · 24/08/2012 12:09

loving the no sugar recipe might sub the milk and bi carb for sparkling water.

I don't even have school age kids but looking forward to school starting as all the toddler groups start again

teaandthorazine · 24/08/2012 12:36

Yep, this has been a lonnnnng month indeed. Tbh can't wait for ds to get back to school, and dp to start new job on same day, and we can all get a bit of normality back!

Ate pizza last night. Doh. Was thin crust though [clutches at straws]. Am in a foul mood today and want to hide under duvet, not TOTM so blaming it on the carbs!

Cauli cheese with bacon tonight. Comfort food.

BIWI · 24/08/2012 14:03

Our last full day here before we come home. I have completely given up trying to eat low carb! We have been out for two very lovely dinnerrs, and I had a pudding there both times. Interestingly I enjoyed them, but more 'intellectually' rather than thinking they were fantastic. I had them because I felt that the situation warranted it, but coud just as easily have gone without, without feeling deprived.

I have enjoyed my food but I am looking forward to getting back into the low carb swing of things. I just hope that I can get properly back into the zone when we get home. It's my birthday shortly after we return, and I guess we'll be going out then, but I don't want to postpone the return to low carb by waiting till then.

I'm not getting on the scales. I know I will have put weight on. I'm going to do Bootcamp Light until after my birthday, and then start Bootcamp for two weeks from Monday 3 September.

Thankfully it is sunny again today, after two wet and rainy days, so we're off to the beach for the last time.

HumphreyCobbler · 24/08/2012 14:17

I am glad you had a nice time BIWI.

I am planning to eat bread and butter pudding tonight, and to drink wine. Will be back on track tomorrow. I have been finding it a little hard going the last few days, so am planning on a cheat (having people over for dinner) and enjoying it Smile.

NigellasGuest · 24/08/2012 14:25

Glad to see you are having such a fantastic time, BIWI.
Are you feeling ok in your clothes? who cares what the scales say!

Ive hardly exercised at all this month.... and it's not even the gym that I do, it's a fitness dvd after the DCs have left for school. Since they have not been leaving for school, obviously my routine has been turned upside down.

Wouldn'/t it be great if Dr Briffa did his own special fitness DVD!

BIWI · 24/08/2012 14:31

Here is a really interesting article on intermittent fasting

I'm interested to know more about IF - it does seem to be the latest 'thing' - and the comments about IF and exercise are especially relevant.

BIWI · 24/08/2012 14:38

My clothes are fine - although my bikini less so! I'm guessing I've probably gained 5-7lbs. But not going to find out!

HumphreyCobbler · 24/08/2012 14:50

I think I may never weigh myself again actually.

BIWI · 24/08/2012 15:01

It's a thought, Humph. The numbers we see are much less relevant than how we look or how our clothes fit us. And I know that I'm a different shape now than when I was in my 20s, pre-children.

HumphreyCobbler · 24/08/2012 15:04

I think I get rather hooked on the numbers. I stopped weighing when I had my stall as I found it rather depressing that it didn't change at all when I didn't cheat once! At least then I didn't have a mood dip due to some numbers Grin

fufulina · 24/08/2012 15:30

Too have just done the shop and pork chops made it onto this weeks menu, again! I eat lots of green beans, parts of my 'greens' that I tend to do. Hadn't thought they'd be carby... Will investigate.

IF tends to happen almost by mistake. I'm not that hungry when I get up, and before I realise it, it's time for a late lunch. This is a shift. I used to go to bed planning my breakfast. I never understood people who just 'didn't eat' at certain times!

Didn't get around to dynaband. Smallest teething, so I think the fifty trips upstairs to settle her probably did me some good.

BIWI have a great last day.

emmak86 · 24/08/2012 17:33

Evening all Grin

I just got home.. So back to the strict bootcamping again.
I did let go the two days i was away as there wasnt the option foodwise!

We basically walked round all day everyday.. So im very achey lol!

BIWI - glad youve had a good holiday and welcome back to the low carbing :)

topsi · 24/08/2012 17:39

I sooooo fancy a curry tonight.
I have been good all week, today:
Strawbs and G yog for breki (small drizzle of honey)
2 x coffee and cream
salad with salmon and feta for lunch
snacks 2 squares 90% choc and chashews

what shall I do, could have a full blown carb fest with pops, rice and naan
could have just curry
could have curry and do myself brown rice to go with??
Feel the scales have stopped dropping even though I am avoiding carbs don't want to jepordise any weight loss from being good today??
what shall I do?

emmak86 · 24/08/2012 17:40

How about a homemade curry without the rice?? Or i see some people use cauliflower rice with curries?!

topsi · 24/08/2012 17:49

mmm yeah have to make it though and am feeling ultra lazy

vnmum · 24/08/2012 18:07

topsi it probably goes against the grain of the thread, but if you are really wanting a carb fest curry and will enjoy it then why not make an educated decision to have it. Yes you will probably gain some glycogen but that will go again once you are back on the wagon tomorrow and sometimes a carb binge can break a stall (increases leptin), especially if you have been low carbing for a while and fasting tomorrow would get rid of the glycogen and water weight quicker.

If you are craving something really bad, sometimes it is better to go for a controlled carb session rather than let the cravingget worse and turn into an all day or all weekend carb fest.

halfthesize · 24/08/2012 18:09

BIWI hope you have had a fab last day.

topsi indian take away is the easiest as has things like chicken tikka, no rice, no naan, no popadoms, its not worth how you feel about it in the morning, honestlySmile

I am off out tonight, on yet another mum's night, so there will be plenty of wine consumed but will try to alternate with water, as I am also out tomorrow nightGrin My PIL are taking my DC away for the weekend, I wont know what to do with myself in the days>.....

emma glad you had fun x
