We could keep chatting here until someone starts a new proper thread...

mind you I do see what vnmum is sayingSmile

topsi · 24/08/2012 18:23

nah am going to have tesco rotissery chicken, roast veg and cauliflower mash. Polishes halo........

vnmum · 24/08/2012 18:31

Just read the article BIWI linked to. Very interesting indeed. I did note that the improvements seen by fasting, i.e improved insulin sensitivity, decreased trglycerides and reduced inflammation can all be achieved by following a low carb diet.

Also another interesting point is that the author and guest author say that you neeed to be following low carb for it to work and eating high carb SAD will not work.

With regards to the exercise, I normally exercise fasted but recently I have been trying to push the fast until the evening after my workout but this didn't seem to have any benefit whereas the article is saying that you should braek the fast 30 mins after exercise with a protein rich meal or shake. I am going to try this approach when I get back to the gym regularly once the DC are back at school.

This is also a slight contradiction to the horizon programme that the 5:2 threads seem to be following as in they are fasting but still eating a high carb diet which this article said doesn't seem to work.

I have just started the 'alternative day diet' book as I was interested in the approach so will see what that says.

fufulina · 24/08/2012 18:42

Topsi, I always have curry on a Friday. A Sainsburys or wait rose jalfrezi, or similar, then have with little gem leaves and total yoghurt. Delicious! Don't miss the rice at all.

fufulina · 24/08/2012 18:45

But also see the value in what vnmum said! Controlled carb fest!

MegTheCat · 24/08/2012 21:33

I was 11st 7 when I weighed myself this morning. Woo hoo! that's half a stone lost - at least. Weight seems to fluctuate a lot and before I started this woe it was quite often up to 12st 4 or 12st 6. I know weight isn't everything but is nice to know I am not just imagining that I'm thinner.
Responding to Nether's suggestion that we introduce ourselves: I am 49 and have been low-carbing since beginning of the school holidays (5 weeks ish) - and for the first 2 weeks I was easing into it gradually so its been about 3 weeks of proper bootcamp. I have 2 DCs - boys 16 and 12 - and have had a termtime working arrangement since they were small. So I am trying to use the holidays to sort myself out with what I eat + exercise. My short term goals are

  1. Visit my parents end of next week without my mum saying "have you put on weight again?" (which will be followed later with "have some cake! You haven't had any cake yet!")
  2. Be too thin to wear my dowdy size 16 M&S suit when I go back to work.

Mainly I would just like to be healthy and have all my size 14 clothes fit.
I low carbed 6 years ago and got down to 9 stone but put it all back on again (partly because my mum was so disapproving of faddy diets and everyone else seemed to think it was an odd way to eat, partly because things got mega stressful at work)

It is great having the support on this thread this time round. I haven't posted that much cos I'm usually looking at it on my phone. Love the recipes too.
I've been a bit of a physical wreck as well as being tubby - not really anything specific but felt flu-ey quite often, had gastric reflux, IBS symptoms, couldn't seem to do exercise without making myself ill. I am feeling much better already on this woe- I've cut down gastric reflux medication and am getting gradually fitter doing a bit of exercise most days. Just hope I can keep it up when I am back at work.

MegTheCat · 24/08/2012 21:37

Oh, vnmum thanks for posting the emmental lasagne instructions. I made it this week and whole family liked it. I am so glad we can keep eating lasagne as it is one of the few proper family meals my dcs will both eat. My emmental melted but it tasted fine. Think I sliced it too thin. Dh suggested trying with gouda as Lidl do it ready sliced so may have a go with that.

halfthesize · 25/08/2012 10:08

hazchem · 25/08/2012 13:24

Arvo all,

Had a great start to the day

B almond and flaxseed pancakes with greek yoghurt ! Super yummy and they didn't need the sugar so thanks for the vnmum
25 minute family run around the park and back for lunch
L Scrambled eggs with roasted med veggies and dollop of pesto.

Last night was a bit cheeky had wine and cheese and nuts but I don't mind. I think that's the thing about this WOE is i really don't mind if I slip up it doesn't feel like the end of the world. I'm just not stressed about it. I can't tell you what a weight off that is.

half hope you feel better soon. plenty of water and possibly a squareor two of dark choc.

nether I'm never sure how to introduce myself now but here goes. I'm 34 I've been low carbing for about 3 weeks. I have previously been doing weight watchers for about 6 years and got to goal the same week I found out I was pregnant. Needless to say I stopped attending meetings and ate in case I was having triplets. DS is 18 months now and I'm not quite at goal weight. I'd like to get to 72 kilos and then spend 6-8 weeks doing maintenance and then decided to got down more. I'm breastfeeding and likely to continue for at least 6 more months so feel I need to keep a little reserve. Oh and I've started running (with a pram).

AuntieMaggie · 25/08/2012 14:08

I'm doing really well... except for breakfast :( I think I'm going to have to cook bacon the night before as I can't face it in the morning.

Just been to asda - they were giving away burger testers outside that they'd made by just mixing mince with their burger spread - it gave the burger a really nice flavour but I don't know what the carb content was.

NigellasGuest · 25/08/2012 14:20

nether I've been lowcarbing for a couple of months now and I've lost a stone

emmak86 · 25/08/2012 14:27

B- was missed today, but not really worried after everything i ate on holiday!
L- toby carvery: pork and beef with res cabbage, cauliflwer cheese and small amount of stuffing.

Im thinking i might make the almond puff pancakes from the low carb gourmet for breaky tomorrow.

Netheregions · 25/08/2012 16:48

Busy... But wanted to thank you for your intros nigella and hazchem Smile

EyesDoMoreThanSee · 25/08/2012 16:58

MIA slightly but have escaped to the kitchen with a coffee and the iPad. Have typed many a reply to the thread on my phone and lost it so I am learning just short replies on that platform.

Anyway. I am enjoying experimenting slightly with this WOE, I went out for lunch late last week and the food was, to be fair, poor quality. I ate what I wanted of it and then left the rest. I didn't force it down and I realised when I had had enough. I also did not have a dessert. Then last night DH opened some chocolates and I had two dark chocolate ones. Didn't want anymore. They are still on the side and in fact were a house moving present four weeks ago and in 'old days' they would have been gone the day they were given!

I am now 11.8 so that is a good step in the right direction. DH drank himself silly last night and for the first time since I knew him has sent the day throwing up idot mixed sloe vodka with an entire bottle of string red wine which means our first day of a weeks holiday has been not the laid back relaxed day I had hoped. Really cross with him. He was meant to go out and take DD so I could write some letters and do some ringing round builders etc.

And now it is raining so I can't even work in the garden!

But, I am utterly determined to get to 10'10 by Christmas and also learn how to maintain my weight rather than yo yo diet, I have a year of my phd left and I am panicking that I have no damn data yet!

halfthesize · 25/08/2012 19:25

Afternoon ladies hazchem took your advice re water and choc and feel great now, which is a good job as out for a meal tonight with my parentsSmile

Thegoddessblossom · 25/08/2012 19:34

OMIGOD HERE YOU BLOODY WELL ALL ARE!!!

Have been looking at the old thread for a week and wondering why noone was posting!!!

Have read all updates.

Nether - I am 37, 2 boys, nearly 8 and 6. Work full time when not in wonderful wonderful wonderful Crete, which is where I am now. Home Tuesday, sob.

Have been lo carbing for about a year and much prefer it to low fat, but only really got to ideal weight before holiday (9 1) by properly following bootcamp.

Fish, Greek yoghurt, eggs, salad, too many nuts and too much alcohol. Has been very easy to low carb here food wise, but will see what the booze has done to me when I get back. Happy birthday Emma!

emmak86 · 25/08/2012 19:39

Helloooo goddess and thank u Smile

Just had my dinner- chicken ceaser salad with boiled eggs! Its defo my new favourite Grin

Lucky im not as fussy a eater as my children... My eldest doesnt seem to like anything at the mo, and takes over an hour to eat dinner in the evenings AND my youngest just throws all food on the floor unless its biscuits, quavers or yogurts!!! Angry

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 25/08/2012 21:05

Bad, bad day. I ate a bacon roll, a McD's quarter-pounder and fries and drank a Crabbie's alcoholic ginger beer. Blush I think I'm going to get IPD and read it for a bit of a kick up the bum. I was so good for weeks - I seem to have been having a bit of a backlash.

Must try harder, must try harder...

MrsHerculePoirot · 25/08/2012 21:17

Helloooooo! I am back home just had a cheeky weigh (two weeks away and late evening) and I think I've only put on a few lbs so I reckon by the Monday after the bank holiday (3rd sept) I'm hoping to be back to where I was and then ready for the pre-Christmas bootcamp!!!

OP posts:
AuntieMaggie · 25/08/2012 21:19

Who was it that has protein shakes for breakfast? And which one and where can I get free sanples?

I'm thinking this might be the answer as I can only face blandish food in the morning but need to take metformin with something!

SingingTunelessly · 25/08/2012 21:59

Grin Blossom. I thought I'd killed the thread but then realised it was full.

Turtle wow that was a carb fest day! Anything in particular started that off? Oh well, water, water, water and fat! We will do this.

Did the lasagne tonight. Plenty of spinach, emmenthal sheets, mozzerella and Parmesan. It was absolutely delicious. Smile
