Morning all... Is it at all appropriate for us newbies to the thread to ask for a 'roundup' of who you all are and your low carbing achievements so far?
I'm 43, starting weight 11st7lb July 2011 current weight 8st12lb and maintaining.
I'm a grandma
Dd is 20 years old dgc is 6 weeks !
Ds is 6 years old

Trained kindergarten teacher currently self employed teaching English to very privileged Dutch children... Also writing 'second' translations for training and educational documents.
Lately I've been reading Gary Taubes after watching 'the men who made us fat' on catchup recently... Taubes has some f'ing brilliant lectures on the calories in calories out paradigm... Blows it out of the water!!! I'll find a link if anyone's interested Smile

teaandthorazine · 23/08/2012 09:04

Morning losers!

Well, after the 3-bean calamity (which was actually delicious, and had loads of green veg so probably not such a calamity after all), yesterday was better.

No breakfast
Lunch - 3 eggs, scrambled with boursin
Dinner - chicken and mushroom curry accompanied by cauliflower and spinach bhaji - yum! We are trying to cut down on takeaways as terribly skint atm and this was a great homemade replacement. Dp and ds had some rice and I had the now-ubiquitous shredded cabbage. Didn't drink much water though so will be trying to up that today.

Am definitely 10st now - the scales have sts for several days now which is fine by me because I originally thought 10st was unlikely, but it appears to be true Grin. Am going to see if I can get them into the 9s, but just for an experiment really. I think 10st is a decent maintenance weight since I'm 5'7". Happy happy happy!

teaandthorazine · 23/08/2012 09:05

Taubes does indeed have some brilliant lectures on you tube.

He is also A FOX Grin

Jins · 23/08/2012 09:26

Well done tea! It sounds very much like your body is telling you how heavy you should be :)

You're obviously happy with you're achievements and you're at a BMI of 21.7 which is fab so why not try maintaintenance and see what happens.

Nether I'm also in my forties and now in my tenth year of low carbing. I started at 10.3 on low carb (had been 10.11) and ended up around 7.10. I normally maintain around 8.3 and I'm about 5lbs above that at the moment but I'm not too worried if it comes off or not.

Netheregions · 23/08/2012 09:34

Grin @ fox!!! teaandthorazine
And whoop for getting to 10st...
Breakfast this am yoghurt (full fat unsweetened) strawberries
Lunch will be leftover veg rich bolognese
Supper will be marianated chicken wrapped in Parma ham sweet potato and salad

Netheregions · 23/08/2012 09:40

Woah Jins 10 years of low carb... What got you into it?

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 23/08/2012 09:53

Nether, I'm 28 and have been low-carbing for about 10/11 weeks. Starting weight was 11 stone 5, now 10 stone 4, although before a v bad weekend it was 10 stone 1.5. I'm 5'2" so am aiming for 9 stone or less. V Envy of those in maintenance!

Breakfast will be boiled eggs mashed with boursin and maybe some fried mushrooms. There's hardly any food in the house so will have to send DH shopping on his way home.

Jins · 23/08/2012 10:57

I got into low carbing because I was staring 40 in the eye and gaining a pound a week on 20 points at weightwatchers. I'd promised myself not to be fat at 40 :) Atkins was becoming very popular so I bought the book and it made absolute sense. Since then I've read a fair bit about the subject and I'm absolutely convinced that this is the healthiest way of eating.

In fact when I glance at some of the 'worthy lunchbox' threads and the gloating about children eating 5 pieces of fruit a day I wince for them and their future obesity problems :)

OlympiaMumsnet · 23/08/2012 11:27

Hello
Please can you help me? I need to edit my online shopping and really want to get my arse in gear for this - feel so much better when I am following it

TIA Lovely Lowcarbers

halfthesize · 23/08/2012 11:39

Morning all

2lb that I had gained has now goneSmile

Netheregions-I started low carbing on the 16th April, my starting weight was 10st 1lbs my weight now is 8st 10lbs - ideal weight is 8st!!! I am 27 and 5ft 3inch.

Olympia how about belly of pork, jamie oliver classic burgers(no carbs) and great with salad, eggs, mushrooms, bacon, chicken to roast, I love omelette or plain old hard boiled eggs in the morning but sometimes just have leftovers from the night beforeGrin

Netheregions · 23/08/2012 12:57

Olympia - stock up on roastable veg, peppers, courgette, tomatoes, aubergine etc - I roast a whole pan at a time and what's left over goes in the fridge for boosting up the next day's salads etc... big chunky vege, olive oil and pepper - sprinkled with garlic finely chopped - roast for 35 mins on 200 in the fan oven

onions, cheeses such as boursin - 'cause it's so versatile, brie, good old cheddar - great in omlettes, eggs...

we do thai green curries so a good quality curry paste and coconut milk are essential...

trying to think of more ideas ...

mince is good and versatile for one pan dishes such as bolognese, free range chicken thighs etc great for smothering with cajun spices and olive oil and roasting skin on - great flavour!!

AuntieMaggie · 23/08/2012 13:01

BIWI I'm not counting calories but recording my food on mfp so I can see that I'm under 1200 cals most days.

Yeah I know about the fruit :( a week ago I would've said no way but actually I don't think it'll be impossible short term.

I know I've still been having porridge and fruit but I can't believe how much better I feel already which is the long term goal. The short term goal is to lose weight.

Even having porridge I've been making it to lunchtime without my blood sugar dropping which is a big deal for me.

I need to go shopping and get some meat and fish - any recommendations?

Netheregions · 23/08/2012 13:07

Thanks for letting me in on when you started low carbing and how successful it is...

breakfast - there's a shockingly indulgent Dutch breakfast dish that dp - soon to be dh makes... baked eggs is what he calls it

Frying pan on medium heat ... in goes two rashers of bacon - two eggs on top and slices of cheese to cover most of the egg... (he pops the yolks to speed up the cooking) cook until the cheese is melted and serve... wouldn't have thought that it would work but I've grown to love the Sunday mornings when he makes breakfast! Grin

vnmum · 23/08/2012 14:00

nether I started low carbing beginning of feb this year at 10st 9.5lbs. I know weigh 9st 11. My loss is considerably slow compared to half who I am very Envy of for being in the 8's. I did have a 5 week plateau and have had a fair few gains and losses.

I am 5'4 and 35, my BMI scales tell me it is 24.3 (or something like), my body fat is 27.8% and my goal is to get to 9st or just under and hopefully a bodyfat of close to 20%. I'm not bothered about BMI as I don't think it takes muscle into account that much.

half How did DC like the muffins?

Netheregions · 23/08/2012 14:44

vnmum I'd love to know my body fat percentage - don't have scales that will give me that and I've not found a 'Boots' equivalent that have scales that can measure bodyfat - Still think losing nearly a stone in under a year is good and it all depends on body type and the weight you are genetically programmed to carry from what I understand.

OlympiaMumsnet · 23/08/2012 15:40

Thanks for that nether -
Oh nether that sounds yum - better than the chocolate sprinkles the dutch have on toast?!?

Need some brekkie inspiration myself

AuntieMaggie · 23/08/2012 15:56

A quick question... how do you make sure you're "regular" when low carbing?

BIWI · 23/08/2012 16:04

Eat your carbs in the form of veg and salad, and drink plenty of water. And don't stress out about how often you're going! We tend to think that if we haven't gone to the loo everyday then we are constipated - you are only constipated if you are finding it difficult or uncomfortable to go.

Plenty of fat should help too.

Coffee helps some people, as dose high strength vitamin C apparently. Others use linseed/flaxseed, but I have never needed to do this, as I've never had the problem.

BIWI · 23/08/2012 16:07

And no need to buy anyone's beef burgers - really easy and much cheaper to make your own.

For each person, 75-100g steak mince. NOT lean or low fat!

In a bowl mix the mince with your hands with oil, (if yiu can only get kean mince, add an extra glug of oil), salt (more than you think you will need), black pepper and, if you wish, chopped shallots or herbs or garlic or chillies.

Shape the mince into patties and fry/barbecue.

fufulina · 23/08/2012 17:25

Hi losers,

Marking my place on new thread. Back home, and now 77kg, so back on the way down.

Finding intermittent fasting becoming part of my woe, and the dynaband arrived while I was away, so starting the resistance exercises in briffa's book tonight.

Also did a lovely pork chop with ceam and mushrooms in the oven, which was delicious. Just browned chops, chops out into foil lined tin, cook a shed load of mushrooms in pan, add lemon juice and seasoning, put on chops, pour over cream, close parcel, bake for an hour. Delicious.

SingingTunelessly · 23/08/2012 18:06

Ooh Nethers that breakfast sounds yummy. You might struggle for lunch options but that breakfast is a LC's dream.

BIWI. How's the holiday going?

topsi · 23/08/2012 18:40

I am eating so much salad and veg on this diet I can't imagine being constipated (though I have never found it a problem!) A good strong coffee with cream first things gets me going!

halfthesize · 23/08/2012 19:22

vnmum they loved them, thank you so much for the recipeSmile

Lunch today was burger and salad
Dinner bacon, egg and mushrooms

halfthesize · 23/08/2012 19:30
