How on earth can a salad be 660?

InMySpareTime · 17/08/2012 07:57

It's lard pastry?
Have they rolled it paper thin or something?
I make pastry with soya spread and roll it to 2mm thin to make 200g of pastry feed the 4 of us, and even at that I would expect a pie to come to more than that. Are they using ludicrously small portion sizes to get that figure?

StealthPolarBear · 17/08/2012 07:58

OK so "salad" is a bit of a misnomer. It's the asda cheese, pasta (and mayo!) layered salad. I love it and tend to have it when I'm away with work. But it's not a huge bowl, and it's 660 cals.

fivegomadindorset · 17/08/2012 07:59

Not lard at all. here it is

StealthPolarBear · 17/08/2012 07:59

oh sorry IMST I don't actually know that - I assume all pastry is lard, never made it and didn't realise there were other ways to make it!

InMySpareTime · 17/08/2012 07:59

stealth was it a munchy box salad? Deep fried?
I make salad, use balsamic vinegar and lime juice as a dressing, it's well under 100 cals for a decent amount.

StealthPolarBear · 17/08/2012 08:00

mmm you could do those with quorn mince and it'd be even lighter

StealthPolarBear · 17/08/2012 08:01

lol at deep fried salad! I did once make my own which was slightly lower in cals, but not quite as nice :o

InMySpareTime · 17/08/2012 08:01

X posts, it would be the cheese and mayo putting the cals in your salad.
I read the pie recipe, it's a pizza bread "pastry" pie, so effectively a calzone.

StealthPolarBear · 17/08/2012 08:03

yeah and the pasta - still Shock that it's twice as calorific as a pie though!

reastie · 17/08/2012 08:52

That pie did look really good - they used pizza base mix in place of pastry. I felt a little smug as the sweet and sour chicken they did I've been doing an almost identical recipe for a few years and even teach it to my students Grin . Looking forward to next week where they do cakes at the like - who's betting the cupcakes are a whisked sponge Wink

littlemissstan · 17/08/2012 09:22

Fluffy and everyone else who says they put on weight overnight - it's totally the scales! You need to eat 3,500 calories to put on ONE POUND of fat, so unless you are sleep-eating donuts or something it will only be a mix of water and scale error.

I got up early to put a curry in the slow cooker, and realised too late that I'd bought full-fat coconut milk instead of the light version... It's sat there cooking away and I've worked out it will be about 800 calories per portion! Maybe if I just eat salad for the rest of the day it will be ok?? It smelt AMAZING before I left for the gym :(

InMySpareTime · 17/08/2012 09:25

Pad it out with cornflour/water mix and veg such as broccoli or cauliflower, dish out usual portions and freeze the rest for another meal (there should be loads left over, and you can do that when you get in later).
That should mitigate the coconut without diminishing the flavour.

Morning

A newbie here in need of motivating.

StealthPolarBear · 17/08/2012 09:44

Hi piste :) how much do you want to lose, why do you want to lose it and how do you plan to do it?

So sleep eating doughnuts is bad is it? Oops!

sagelynodding · 17/08/2012 09:44

Do chemists in the UK still have those scales where you put in 20p and you get your weight printed out?

In terms of accuracy that must be better obvs wearing no shoes and v light clothes? I'm trying to get brave enough to get weighed at our local pharmacie and get an accurate height measurement too. But I would be mortified if I saw anyone I knew!

If i am to believe my scales, I weigh 77 kg today. A total loss of 9 kg since March(ish). If i can get under 70kg by Christmas I will be ecstatic

Fairenuff · 17/08/2012 10:01

Wow this thread moves fast! I'm having a great week so far but it's usually Friday that trips me up. I eat healthy all week lose a couple of lbs then allow myself a couple of 'treats' on a Friday and am back to square one on Saturday!

Like you Stealth I find that really de-motivating. I have to see a loss on the scales. The more I lose the more motivated I am, so that's why I'm determined to stick with it today.

Btw if you like cheese in your salad - I crumble 30g of salad cheese into it. It tastes like feta cheese, quite a strong flavour imo, so you don't need much but 30g is only 60 cals. Make sure you get 'salad' cheese (next to the feta) and check the labels because some are higher than others.

I'm not a big fan of the current fashion for starving (fasting) once or twice a week because I want a diet that I can eat for life. For me, it's more about putting all the good stuff in than worrying about keeping the bad stuff out. It's a positive spin which makes me feel healthy.

Lost 30lbs so far and two dress sizes Smile

I've seen those weight machines around sage but I think they prefer you to weigh with your clothes on Grin

RatherBeOnThePiste · 17/08/2012 10:03
Smile

Stealth - your first question is the easiest to answer! A stone

The second - I lost lots over the last few years and I am in danger of putting it all back on I know, a stone on already. Need to get my head in the right place really, and I am sad that I cannot motivate myself. I don't understand myself half the time Sad

The third, not sure - I have done all sorts over time, from extreme low carbing to calorie counting, found different things worked at different times. Find the holidays harder as I'm sure we all do, but poss I think low cal is where I am starting.

BonkeyMollocks · 17/08/2012 10:08

Ok, somehow or another my scales are sitting smack bang on 12 Confused

Considering the week i have had how is that possible?? 3lbs off since Mon?? Really??

Yesterday all I ate was bread and pasta, and 3 biscuits . What the hell is going on??

I'm not complaining but I just can't understand it.
But as I type I am sat in my skirt with the stupid imo poppers for buttons and they have stayed popped! Grin

All of the above will hopefully keep me on track today.

sage Boots normally have those scales. 50p or something like that.

Welcome piste .

Morning everyone else, can I just say that I luffs you all :)

StealthPolarBear · 17/08/2012 10:13

well done Bonkey. Seems liek there's something in the air which is causing people to lose or gain when they really shouldn't :) Wish some of it would head this way, I am back to 12st2 :( but good day yesterday, OK so far today - back to shred and back to work next week (although that involved meeting a load of MNers in Leeds for a pizza :o)

Piste - well done on losing the weight already. So half the battle won - you've proved you can do it and you've seen that diets do work for you :) That's the hardest bit IME.

Is it normal to feel like you're going to pass out when you're doing shred? There;s a particular bit in one of the circuits where I actually get flashing lights in front of my eyes! Instinct says this is not good, but is this what she means when she yells as me to PUSH THROUGH THE PAIN?

littlemissstan · 17/08/2012 10:16

Thank you for the tip IMST - shall do as you suggest, was going to pad it out with some fresh veg anyway so not a great leap!

InMySpareTime · 17/08/2012 13:38

The DCs wanted my help making appley biscuit "parcels" (a recipe DS made up, it looks quite professional, a bit like filo parcels but v. Thin shortbread instead of pastry). I helped roll out the biscuit dough and didn't eat anySmile. If I can work out how to log it I might eat one later, I've got a lot of spare calories today after walking everywhere all morning.
Unfortunately for my diet, DS is showing a flair for cooking. I may try to steer his choices in a healthy direction but he's so skinny he needs feeding up I think he eats more than me, and he's only 10Envy.

InMySpareTime · 17/08/2012 14:18

I had one of the fruity biscuit parcels, and it was divine! I had a small one (30g weighed) and put it into MFP as a "Tesco apple and blackberry pie" fractioned to 30g, which came out as 71cals. I figure the sugar and dash of golden syrup are evened out by the soya spread in the biscuit dough and the fact the filling was mashed apple and blackcurrant, with no nasties added. Also the biscuit was rolled to 1mm thickness, so there was a high filling to carbs ratio.

StealthPolarBear · 17/08/2012 17:14

they sound nice IMST :)
I've just made a quick pasta bake for dinner, thwere's loads and it's on;y 450 cals (and that includes some cheese on top :o) . Also have the PILs coming tomorrow and going to make a mushroom curry and have only that and a bit of rice...I can feel myself getting back into this.
(they will be allowed more food, bread etc :))

reastie · 17/08/2012 17:34

inmy they sound delish

stealth Grin to your comment on letting PILs have more food than you!

I'm over kcals today, but hopefully only 150 which by MFP actually means that's a little less than what I need to maintain weight, so no biggie. Think my undoing was having soup at lunch (usually I have main meal at lunch and soup for dinner) as it meant I was hungry alot in the afternoon so ended up snacking a bit more than usual.
