Well, week 15 of Bootcamp has just ended. But the support and banter will continue! I, for one, am carrying on for the next couple of weeks until my holiday, in the hope that I can drop another pound or so before I go.

There have been some brilliant losses in the last two weeks, so I'm hoping that you'll all be sticking with it too!

Well done ,Jins !

Happy birthday to you Hazchem! have a great day.

carbs make my tummy feel funny now. Had really bad time after my pizza. Also my hair seems to be falling out quite a bit. Is this unconnected or part of this woe?? I don.t have huge amounts anyway so can't really afford to lose anymore.

Have a great day everyone.

vnmum · 15/08/2012 09:05

happy birthday hazchem

jins I am intrigued by the fasting and have the book to read but after watching the program I am not convinced that the same results could not be achieved with low carbing. there seemed to be an impetous on lowering blood sugar and insulin to get the results which of course is what we do with low carbing.

sybil I seem to lose more hair in the shower on this woe but I don't seem thinner on the head if that makes sense. I do wonder if some of it is if I lower my calories too much when I'm not hungry from ketosis as I know it is a side effect of very low cal diets but seen as I eat fat etc I can't see my calories being 500 a day or lower so maybe it isn't that after all.

captain you can get coconut oil from asian supermarkets (it's cheaper there than in tesco etc). It comes in a tub as is solid at room temp. It has a slight coconut flavour but not overpowering. I can't eat it off the spoon as I don't like the texture in my mouth so I usually put a spoonfull in my chopped boiled eggs and butter

vnmum · 15/08/2012 09:21

I watched the hairy dieters last night. just to see if there were any ideas I could adapt to low carb. It was quite interesting that a few of the people they were doing it with actually gained quite a lot on their low cal low fat diet.

I had to laugh though when I saw their food, it may have been low fat but it was very carby. Also they were spending ages taking the skin off a whole chicken and trimming fat off bacon for a fry up and whinging about how thats the tastiest bit, lol. One of them also had to empty his fridge of "junk" food. aswell as the ice cream and chocs he counted cheese and mussels in garlic butter as junk, how deluded, Grin

One of them actually went into my DM's work and she said they have lost lots of weight and that he was very chatty and friendly. Unfortunately that doesn't help me in my persuasion of getting DM and diabetic DF to change from high carb low fat to this way of eating

clarabellabunting · 15/08/2012 09:34

Happy birthday hazchem.

Well, yesterday was going well until my Asda delivery in which plain lamb steaks were replaced by Chinese pork steaks, which I ate without thinking only to find out they would have contained 12.6 grams of carbs :-( Grrrrr.

On the up side, since going low-carb I have noticed my skin is much better in general and I have a lot more energy than I did before. The extra energy could also be a side effect of me cutting down my caffeine intake to one drink a day.

Today going OK so far. Had a polish kielbasa sausage for breakfast.

Have put a lamb joint in the slow cooker for dinner tonight. Is there any way of making a low-carb gravy? I'll have plenty of stock and juices but I'm not sure what I could thicken it with?

teaandthorazine · 15/08/2012 10:04

Cheese and seafood as junk? Shock

I know it's funny but actually at the same time I get pretty pissed off that people are still being conned into this low-fat, low-calorie crap. How on earth can mussels in garlic butter be considered 'bad food'?

The low-fat mantra is the cause, not the cure, of the obesity issues in the West. I truly believe that and the evidence is stacking up. But while there's money to be made from flogging low-fat products, low-carb will continue to be seen as something only cranks and obsessives indulge in. Grrrrr.

clarabelle - I tend to thicken my gravy by just reducing the hell out of it Grin

hazchem Happy Birthday and hope you feel better soon after the Elmlea. It really is vile stuff. Go buy yourself a pot of clotted cream for the next bowl of strawbs!

Medal · 15/08/2012 10:33

sybil just wanted to chime in and say I have noticed quite a bit of hair loss over the last 3 months that I have been doing BC which is worrying me as I have really enjoyed the benefits of this WOE but my hair is definitely getting thinner, and my skin too almost seems to be looking a bit older/or getting drier - I have started taking some supplements to help and am slowly adding carbs back in as I am on maintenance now. Really hope it's one of those temporary things!

Hope everyone has good days! I have posted on here before but under a different name then I reached maintenance and have just been a dirty lurker Smile Also wanted to say how good celeriac and swede mash is, absolutely divine with some cream in and the LOs loved it too Grin.

mummyduff · 15/08/2012 10:46

Morning all,

Well done jins and Happy birthday Hazchem!

Re the hair thing, both my DH & DD1 are hairdressers and they would say we always loose quite a bit of hair, as long as thickness does not change its not a problem. I have read some article that details links with food etc

www.livestrong.com/article/289301-low-carb-diet-hair-loss/ .

Re article not sure how much I believe.... My DH says that at least twice a year I panic im loosing more than usualGrin I suppose he sees it alot.

Breakfast was bacon and egg.

vezzie · 15/08/2012 10:50

ARGH shouldn't watch the Hairy Dieters. They never sit down! They spend however long creating their meals, and then they stand up at a breakfast bar and shovel bits of them into their mouths. They have just created some very nice looking poached eggs, which are lovely and runny, but are awkwardly craning to eat them without dribbling yolk. And yet this programme is supposed to be about enjoying food! If there is one food that has to be eaten sitting down, I would say runny egg.

(I am not going to get into throwing the cheese away, that is too sad)

(I do like the cooked breakfast piled on watercress though)

hazchem · 15/08/2012 11:03

turn off the Hairy Bikers and watch Great British Bake Off! While it's pretty carb heavy unlikey you will think quick I'll just whip up a cake shaped like a pie with 4 and 20 black birds popping out!

Thank you all for my birthday wishes.

just wanted to share a video or two that I;ve watch over the last few days and The second one is long but i have found them really interesting much more in depth then Briffa. It also looks at some of the the political causes of obesity which is really interesting and just leads me to think more and more where there is a problem follow the money!

vnmum · 15/08/2012 11:26

tea I know what you mean about getting Grr about the low fat brigade. The thing with the hairy dieters is that they have been seeing a metabolic specialist at newcastle uni that deals with diabetes and other metabolic and they are the ones peddling the low fat mantra. Grrrr indeed.
They were throwing out the mussels in butter and cheese because of all the fat and calories it contained.

It did make me chuckle though as they seemed so deprived eating that way and removing fat and then trying to put the flavour back in the recipe Smile.
I am so glad I moved from that deprived way of eating to this flavourful woe

EyesDoMoreThanSee · 15/08/2012 12:04

Maybe we should writ eto the hairy bikers and suggest they do a series on low carbing :-)

I am home alone today, DD is at nursery but despite there being a million and one things to do I cannot seem to get started. It is exceptional frustrating. I am also annoyed that DH has left me all of yesterday's washing up to do, he was home with DD while I went to work yesterday and I have taken a months unpaid leave to sort my head out, not become a damn skivvy!

Breakfast coffee and a small egg
Lunch will be lamb burgers and a fine diced salad (once I have done the washing up) and dinner is baked chicken on a bed of watercress and rocket with a sour cream dressing.

Feel so much better for eating LC, but I am finding my skin is appalling, TOM or insufficient minerals?

vezzie · 15/08/2012 12:15

Eyes, maybe in a few months. They'll achieve their targets, with a big fanfare, and then they'll gradually put all the weight back on and get miserable, and then we'll solve all their problems for them. BIWI can co-present the series all about it!

vnmum · 15/08/2012 13:03

eyes How much dairy or cheese are you eating? My skin went appalling for a while after starting this woe and everyone else seemed to be saying theirs was much better. I was eating alot of cheese and cream at the time as I love the stuff but then I decided to cut it back dramatically and my skin cleared up within a few weeks. Now if I eat alot of cheese over a few days I get breakouts. So I think I have a thing with dairy. Maybe it is the same for you?

vezzie That would be interesting to see if they do gradually put the weight back on. I don't know how long it is since they filmed the show but I imagine they didn't get to their goal weights while on the show so that is why they were still slim when my DM saw them at work. watch this space Grin

NigellasGuest · 15/08/2012 13:53

Hello Losers, whether at home or living it up in Barbados (naming no names Grin)
Happy Birthday Hazchem Thanks

Having been on here moaning yesterday about STS for what feels like EVER, this morning I have inexplicably lost 3lb. So I am back to exactly 10 stone. I have never gone below 10 stone since starting this WOE, I seem to bounce up and down from the 10 stone mark. I want to get to 9.5 stone.
Fingers crossed that I can keep going DOWN now.
I am sort of fasting, to see how that helps. I'm only fasting because I;m just not hungry though... it's nothing too drastic!

vnmum · 15/08/2012 13:59

I am hoping to make the low carb lasagne tonight using emmental cheese as pasta. Those of you who have made it, how long and what temp do I cook it for so that the cheese doesn't melt completely?
Also how vcan I make a bechamel sauce? I have double cream, philadelphia, boursin, cheddar but not sure what I need and how to ensure it is not too runny

Jins · 15/08/2012 14:21

For some weird reason the emmethal doesn't melt. Timing for me is as normal lasagne.

I don't make a bechamel. I mix grated cheddar into cream cheese and pop a dollop on top to melt across.

BIWI · 15/08/2012 14:28

PMSL at the idea of me presenting a tv show!!

For those of you who want more background on the science, and also on the politics, of low carbing, Gary Taubes' book The Diet Delusion is really worth reading. It's a huge tome, and not exactly light reading, but will tell you everything you need to know about why we have got to where we are now.

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 15/08/2012 14:29

Mmm, mmm, mmm, just made Jamie Oliver's ER Diamond Jubilee Chicken from the Jamie's Great Britain book. It has crispy chicken skins, mmm. The only bad bit is that it has pineapple, but I put in much less pineapple than the recipe said and besides, Briffa says pineapple can be eaten in moderation, so long as its not very often. I urge you all to try crispy curried chicken skin - it's delicious!

10 stone 2.5 this morning - woot! That's 10.38% of my bodyweight lost since I started this woe. I have put this on the spreadsheet because DD's naming party is Saturday and I'm having a planned cheat day and will be eating cake and sausage rolls and things, so my weight will doubtless be back up by Monday morning.

teaandthorazine · 15/08/2012 14:33

Mmmmmmmm @ curried crispy chicken skin! Might have a go at that - is the pineapple essential as I loathe cooked fruit?

Am just not hungry at all today. Had a protein shake for breakfast, and have just had a cup of coffee with coconut cream. Oh, and the weeniest bit of cheese from the supermarket deli - ds wanted to try some super-mature cheddar so I had to try it too... Just about to down a litre of water too.

Dinner is sea bass fillets with beurre blanc and asparagus - yum!

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 15/08/2012 14:41

Recipe here. The pineapple isn't cooked, it's part of the garnish. You could easily leave it out, but it really goes well, I think.

mummyduff · 15/08/2012 15:21

Well done NigellaGrin

That recipe looks fab TITD x

Thegoddessblossom · 15/08/2012 17:53

Hello from blisteringly boiling Crete!! I knew I would not be able to stay away from this thread. Am sitting on the terrace overlooking a beautiful bay....villa is unbelievable....ok I won't go on....

Very very interested in comments about hair loss. Mine has been coming out in absolute clumps.... I would be worried if I didn't have ALOT of hair but even so....

Food wise been ok so far. Usual zero low carb to eat at airport but had a crayfish sando minus the bread. Have eaten very low carb since, (dh thankfully has sort of joined me so supermarket shops have seen loads of salami cheese olives salad and eggs) but no low cal tonic to have with my gin and quite a few nuts.....loving the scales here in the villa though, they put me at 8 7 which is clearly wrong but hey who's arguing?

The heat is deffo helping with the appetite suppression. And having dropped 5-6 pounds in the two weeks before coming away I am feeling much happier in my bikini than ever before.

So fingers crossed that dodgy Greek full sugar tonic water doesn't do too much damage. Do you think it's better than drinking dh's beer? Dh keeps telling me the carb police are going to show up at any moment and cart me off...

Bloss

Xx

hazchem · 15/08/2012 18:57

eyes I too am struggling with my skin at the moment. When I first started this WOE it seamed to clear up. I think because the lack of fruit but it;s come back much worse and I've been thinking it's the cheese and double cream. Going to spend the next two weeks with only 1 or 2 dairy portions a day except for butter Grin

welcome lubilee. Here are the bootcamp rules.
Initially for the first 2 weeks you would need to give up strawbs and fruit but after then you can introduce berries back in but not other fruit. It is too sugary.

Drink plenty of water and eat plenty of fat, especially in the first few days when your body is starting to use fat for energy instead of carbs.

You may well feel crappy in the first few days/week, this depends on how carby your previous diet was. This is carb flu and can make you tired, headachy, shaky etc. This is when alot of people give up and eat carbs. DON'T. Just push through with plenty of water and fat and you will start to feel alot better and have more energy once your body is switched to fat burn mode.

There are lots of meal ideas on the old bootcamp threads and the recipe thread, all of which can be found in the big/slim/whatever topic.

If you can get some books on the science behind it, that will help you understand why we eat as we do. Good books are Gary Taubes 'why we get fat', 'the diet delusion' and 'good calories, bad calories'. You don't need all of these together. Atkins book and Dr John Briffa 'escape the diet trap'. Another good one that deals with the emotional side of eating as well as low carb is 'the idiot proof diet'

Any questions just jump on here Smile
