Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 12 (but Newbies always welcome!)

BIWItheBold · 02/07/2012 08:04

Wow! Three months almost completed. I'm amazed what everyone has achieved, and really impressed how many people are still here!

They say it takes 100 days to make something a habit, and by the end of this week we will pretty much have reached that. Hopefully eating this way will have become much more 'normal' for us all now.

As requested, I have change the title of the thread, so that others interested in low carbing can find us more easily. I will also re-post the rules and the list of allowed veg:

The Carnivore Rules

1.Eat three, proper meals a day.
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food
Focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs. Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. You can have them, but just not every day. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Eat lots of fat.
Eating fat helps you to burn fat. Honestly! Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though, as this is too sweet), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ?
This is where your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

*5.Be careful about dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited). It can impede weight loss for some people. If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but don't overdo it. Full fat yoghurt is the best way to include dairy in your diet - but beware, it does contain carbs. Total Full Fat is the best.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol
If you really can't do this - at least try and restrict it to the weekend. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine.

8.No fruit
Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada.

9.No nuts/seeds
Whilst these are really good to snack on later - it can be too easy to start snacking on these - and before you know it, all your carbs have gone on nuts. Seriously - in bootcamp - don't do it to yourself.

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Allowed veg

Don?t eat any veg unless it?s on this list, and try and focus on eating those that are under 3g carbs per 100g:

Spinach0.8
Celery0.9

French beans4.7
Cabbage5
Yellow pepper5.3
Carrots6
Orange or red pepper6.4
Ginger (peeled)7.2
Butternut squash7.5

Veggie Rules

Only slightly adapted from BIWI's but best to take notice of the changes if you're vegetarian.

Focus on pure, natural ingredients as the basis for your meals. Vegetarian Sausages and Burgers are ok in small quantities, but check the carb count as some can be very high. Avoid foods marketed as 'Low Carb' such as Atkins Daybreak Bars, etc.

Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

8.No fruit
Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada.

9.Beware of Nuts and Seeds.
Nuts are a very good way to include more fat and protein in your diet, however some are very high carb (e.g. Cashews). Stick to small amounts of Almonds, Brazil Nuts, Dried Coconut, Walnuts, Seeds and Peanut Butter, but check the ingredients, many supermarket brands have sugar added.

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Oh you poor thing. It's grim
How about some low carb soup?

slowlyburningcalories · 07/07/2012 22:45

Ok, so I admit it, the last three weeks have been a total write off in terms of low carbing. I blame the stomach bug which lasted two weeks, then a week of research out in the field where LC food was harder to come by. Then last week was purely and simply procrastination!

But LC is the way to go for me. I have so much more energy when i don't eat gluten heavy carbs. DH made a sour dough cake today and out of politeness I tried a piece, but actually it was too sweet and I didn't really enjoy it. Then DH and I were experimenting with a BMI calculator and I am shocked that I am in the overweight category so utterly determined to get back on this diet horse, I have warned DH to get me through the next 72 hours of carb withdrawal.

slowlyburningcalories · 07/07/2012 22:55

vnmum I had to go back to carbs, I had a sickness bug and a week later was still being sick, no appetite, no energy, constant nausea if I had anything more than water. Eventually realised all I wanted was carbs and so did and it took a a week to get back to normal energy and not being nauseous. Combined with other factors ^ see above I have fallen off the wagon but I am trying the straight and narrow again. So much nicer not to be bloated.

fibi28 · 07/07/2012 23:12

hi all, i'm joining in today. i've been doing LC after reading IPD and briffa, and i feel great on it and love it. in theory! the only problem is the weekends, where i get completely derailed every saturday and basically binge on carbs all day, and then have to start again every sunday morning (and get that yucky day 4 /5 feeling when getting into ketosis every week only to have to do it all over again!)
Feel disgusting right now after eating rubbish all day - seriously i don't even know why and i was doing so well. lost 6lbs last week, and now i have to start all over again.
so i'm hoping that if i join in here, i may hold off a little better next weekend.

Jins · 08/07/2012 01:13

Sad I'm sad that people seem to be struggling.

You don't need to go back to carbs you know. I never have. I'm now getting close to my ninth anniversary and carbs aren't an issue.

It takes ages to get past it. Please keep going for yourself

Whippoorwhill · 08/07/2012 02:08

Urgh, had a single roast potato tonight, a small one, about half a smallish potato, cooked to perfection in duck fat. I now have insane heartburn and a horrible pain under my ribs. I'm swigging Gaviscon for the first time since I started low carbing and it's just not touching it.

Not a hope of sleeping and I've got to get up at 5.30. Blegh! :(

Oh also vnmum, sorry you're still not 100%... the best thing after a bout of d and v is chicken soup. Proper chicken stock from boiled bones, with lots of gelatin. It's soothing and nourishing and very gentle on your tummy. Chill and skim off the fat then flavour the stock with a few herbs, maybe some veg if you feel up to it and generous amounts of salt. Add shredded chicken if you can face it. Sip a little regularly, it works wonders.

SharonGless · 08/07/2012 08:55

Fibi28 why do you manage find all week but binge at the weekend? That sounds like emotional eating as in you are "treating" yourself for being good all week. This way of eating is just that, a way of eating and you have to stick to it.

Have you tried meal planning so that you don't go off piste at the weekend? That's my key to success really is ensuring I have plenty of low carb food in And planning ahead

SharonGless · 08/07/2012 08:57

Slowlyburningcalories- welcome back! Focus focus focus and of course water water water

I have maintained again but happy with that after the wedding. I have decided to do the Jillian Michaels 30 day shred in preparation for Hols along with the core plan I am doing anyway. I will have a flatter stomach in 6 weeks

teaandthorazine · 08/07/2012 09:01

I definitely second chicken stock (or beef broth) if people are feeling rough.

Losing the carbs for good is hard sometimes, and I have pretty regular tumbles off the wagon, but the trick is to get right back on ASAP, not to write off days or weeks on end. Weekends are always hardest for me too, but they get easier the longer you low-carb - as jins said in the end the carbs just stop mattering so much. I can now quite easily sit next to dp watching tv or whatever as he eats pringles or dairy milk or whatever! So keep plugging away, it does work and it is soooooo worth it!

Have been to wedding this weekend, decided to drive so booze carbs not a problem. Left my potatoes, only ate cauli, broccoli and green beans in terms of veg. Did have two triangles of brown bread with my prawn starter and did eat pudding Hmm but all in all not too bad. The hotel I'm staying in is like fawlty towers, however! Had to ask for another room when I realised mine had NO loo seat, kettle and tv didn't work etc. New room has massive damp patches, they forgot my breakfast this morning etc etc. The whole place looks like a 1960s nursing home too... turquoise bathroom suites anyone?? Grin

Ah well, off home soon to see dp and watch Andy Murray lose play tennis! Have a good day everyone!

SpringGoddess · 08/07/2012 09:02

Ended up cheating a little last night. Couldnt be bothered to cook properly so dh and I shared a Thai red curry - I added extra prawns and we ate it with cauliflower rice. So a bit of damage limitation.

Roast lamb planned for today - I have never cooked lamb before, should be interesting! Hopefully tasty!

sybilfaulty · 08/07/2012 09:54

Am just whizzing off to tesco to stock up for the week. If I can get celeriac then I'm doing celeriac chips as I need something to nibble on with my glass of water in the evening. Well, I dn't need of course, but I'd like.

I think that the water is making a huge difference to how I'm feeling. I find I am easily getting through 4l a day without problem. My skin looks plumper and my wrinkles appear less, too. Hurray.

I am still very tired in the evenings but I get woken regulalry in the night by my darling children and so it's to be expected I suppse.

Have a great Sunday everyone

Thegoddessblossom · 08/07/2012 10:17

Tea that hotel sounds hilarious!!!

Went out for an Indian last night, chose fish tikka which was dry ie. no sauce, delish, and sag paneer and cauliflower bhaji. Yes there was gin and red wine but that's life.

Will be good again today, not sure what for breakfast, might just skip it as am still in bed Blush.

MrsHerculePoirot · 08/07/2012 10:24

Hurrah! I lost another 1 lb this week - that is 9 lbs in total. I know it isn't a lot, but it is still in the right direction and I haven't cheated once. This is a definitely a WOE for me now. Went to a BBQ last night and didn't even fancy any of the crisps out and around before which was a major revelation for me. Also AF arrived last night and usually the week before is a major stumbling block for me and I didn't even realise this month!

Hope everyone has a lovely low carb Sunday!

fibi28 · 08/07/2012 10:45

yes i think it definitely is emotional eating and also something happens when i just have one bite of something carby and i end up going a bit mad and eating everything in sight. i was feeling really good by friday and did not actually feel that i needed anything but then it just happened.
i am going to plan next weekend really carefully.
thanks for support. will let you all know how this week goes.

AlpinePony · 08/07/2012 11:07

Is Sunday weigh-in day?

I've lost 2lb this week which is excellent in spite of a dodgy wheel on my wagon.

Whippoorwhill · 08/07/2012 11:09

Fibi, is it worth you getting in some really indulgent low carb nibbles for next weekend so that you can treat yourself without crashing off the wagon?

I get insanely munchy just before my period but have found that having low carb treats to hand stops me from falling face down in the cake and crisps.

My favourites are really good cheese, smoked salmon wrapped round cream cheese and pickled jalapenos, chunks of salami, big prawns with garlic mayo to dip and mini meatballs but I'm sure you have things that make you feel pampered rather than deprived.

2muchmess · 08/07/2012 11:15

(was fibi28) yes i'm going to think about doing that - good idea.
I bought a low carb recipe book and will have a good look through that. the other problem is that i've got lots of guests coming for lunch and am a bit embarrassed that i will have to tell them i'm not eating desert and what they are going to say. silly i know but it's on my mind!

CutItOutAndRestart · 08/07/2012 11:24

if you really need a desert whip up some double cream in a ramekin with a small amount of cocoa powder (lowest carb you can find) if necessary add a sprinkling of splenda and for variety a small amount of coconut.

failing that make a big no sugar jelly and serve with cream or low carb yogurt :)

I hope I'm not breaking too many bootcamp rules posting the above?

Whippoorwhill · 08/07/2012 11:29

That's not silly at all. I think most of us feel awkward when what we are eating draws comments. I really hate having to justify my diet and low carbing is definitely one of those trigger topics that always seems to start an arguement.

If you are doing the dessert then you could always have something simple like berries and cream that you can eat too. Or there is a recipe around here, probably in the Bootcamp recipe thread, for chocolate mousse. It's just very dark chocolate and a bit of splenda/stevia/sweetner of your choice if needed, whipped into double cream and put in ramekins to set. When I had friends round I made a low carb version for me and added sugar and a dash of cointreau to everyone elses. It seemed to work ok.

mummyduff · 08/07/2012 12:07

Afternoon all, sorry to hear some of you are having a bad timeSad

Tea faulty towers hotel sounds very funnyGrin

We did a bbq last night and I did not fancy any of the crisps etc, just ate the lovely cajun prawns and belly of pork it was yummy. However I did have quite a few loads PimmsBlush, but as damage limitation I drank shed loads of water all night and have continued today, so sloshing well!

2muchmess, I dont think its silly, I would just say I'm trying to be good at the moment and do yourself a bowl of full fat greek yog with a few berries and do berries and cream for guest as Whip saidSmile

right must continue with the clean up from last night so I can sit and watch tennis soon x

vnmum · 08/07/2012 12:18

hi all.
Thanks for all the advice and ideas.
I am feeling a little better today. I think it is just going to take time. No breakfast but I do fancy scrambled egg and bacon for lunch so I am going to go with it and hope it is the return of my appetite Smile.

Next weekend will be testing. I have a function on with DH work and they are only put on twice a year. The food is usually delish and there is alcohol involved. To be honest these 2 functions are usually my only proper nights out a year (boring i know but with childcare to sort its not easy to go out all the time) so I am planning on going off piste and enjoying myself. A hard session in the gym on monday morning will soon get any carbs out of my system anyway. Just hope my stomach is upto full strength by then although I can't handle that much booze nowadays anyway so don't think that will be a major problem.

SpringGoddess · 08/07/2012 12:28

Make a rhubarb fool and put sweeteners in your one. Or eton mess and leave the meringue out of your glass - no one will notice. Or serve up a cheese board. I wouldn't want my diet to be the topic of conversation at a dinner party either. People get all weird and defensive when it comes to their food choices - its a conversation best avoided especially if your guests need to lose a lb or two.

moonshine · 08/07/2012 12:36

Glad you are feeling back to normal Vnmum - hope it continues.

Here's my maybe long & boring update from the doctors (apologies but many of you have been very supportive & I'm sure there may be other lurkers in a similar position).

I didn't have all the results back but thyroid is fine - slap bang in the middle range! I kinda expected that.

By B12 is low (which I was told you get from eating meat & eggs, 2 things I gorge on most days Hmm) I am having further investigations re: absorption.

My cholesterol has gone sky high! Slightly shocked and disappointed at this as it has always been normal & personally will now have to go down the low fat route I think.

I may have some auto-immune thing going on & am going to be referred to hospital. I also have a crackle in my lungs and need a chest xray! (but am sure that is totally unrelated)

And dr talked about referring me to a dietition before going on to a endocrinologist although she said it's up to me but seems she doesn't trust the one in our area as said she had referred lady in my position & that said lady was given new & somewhat untested drug. I got the feeling she wasn't impressed with the resident endocrinologist.

So I feel partly a fraud, but partly sure that something is not right - one suggestions was that having done VLCDs in the past may have fucked up my metabolism big time Sad.

So just to say thank you for all the support but I need to reassess what path to follow (further investigations? A new food approach although I feel i've done them all tbh). And I feel sad as I truly believe (d) in this WOE & the science.

What I probably will do is take some extra B12, eat low-fat & still mostly eat lc. Who knows, that may crack it .

QueenStromba · 08/07/2012 12:49

Sorry to hear about that moonshine. There's actually an increasing amount of evidence that high cholesterol is good for women link.

mummyduff · 08/07/2012 13:23

Goodluck moonshine x
