Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 12 (but Newbies always welcome!)

BIWItheBold · 02/07/2012 08:04

Wow! Three months almost completed. I'm amazed what everyone has achieved, and really impressed how many people are still here!

They say it takes 100 days to make something a habit, and by the end of this week we will pretty much have reached that. Hopefully eating this way will have become much more 'normal' for us all now.

As requested, I have change the title of the thread, so that others interested in low carbing can find us more easily. I will also re-post the rules and the list of allowed veg:

The Carnivore Rules

1.Eat three, proper meals a day.
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food
Focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs. Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. You can have them, but just not every day. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Eat lots of fat.
Eating fat helps you to burn fat. Honestly! Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though, as this is too sweet), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ?
This is where your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

*5.Be careful about dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited). It can impede weight loss for some people. If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but don't overdo it. Full fat yoghurt is the best way to include dairy in your diet - but beware, it does contain carbs. Total Full Fat is the best.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol
If you really can't do this - at least try and restrict it to the weekend. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine.

8.No fruit
Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada.

9.No nuts/seeds
Whilst these are really good to snack on later - it can be too easy to start snacking on these - and before you know it, all your carbs have gone on nuts. Seriously - in bootcamp - don't do it to yourself.

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Allowed veg

Don?t eat any veg unless it?s on this list, and try and focus on eating those that are under 3g carbs per 100g:

Veggie Rules

Only slightly adapted from BIWI's but best to take notice of the changes if you're vegetarian.

Focus on pure, natural ingredients as the basis for your meals. Vegetarian Sausages and Burgers are ok in small quantities, but check the carb count as some can be very high. Avoid foods marketed as 'Low Carb' such as Atkins Daybreak Bars, etc.

Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating plenty of vegetables and salads with your food ?
This is where most of your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable.

8.No fruit
Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada.

9.Beware of Nuts and Seeds.
Nuts are a very good way to include more fat and protein in your diet, however some are very high carb (e.g. Cashews). Stick to small amounts of Almonds, Brazil Nuts, Dried Coconut, Walnuts, Seeds and Peanut Butter, but check the ingredients, many supermarket brands have sugar added.

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

I love frites - glad they were lovely BIWI!

I just had seared roast duck with kale for lunch out with colleagues. It was delicious. They brought a sweet potato hash with it but I just had a mouthful to taste it and then left the rest. Had mineral water instead of wine, skipped dessert and am feeling quite virtuous.

Now what's all this about magic mushrooms? This is turning into a whole different thread surely??? No processed foods, but lots of drugs... Grin

I'm going to a party tomorrow - it's an all-weekend thing with buffet lunch and dinner and buffet breakfast at the hotel, so will just have to make the best choices I can. Luckily as everyone knows I'm coeliac I can avoid a lot of starchy stuff anyway. Have lovely weekends one and all!

legohouse · 06/07/2012 16:21

Hi,i'm new but have lost 3 stone low carbing,i have a stone left to go. I can't quite get my head around the fat thing though,i'm still buying total 0% for example...will i really still lose if i switch to total full fat?

Finbar · 06/07/2012 16:21

B- two fried eggs
mid morning snack - Babybel
L- chicken and some salad inlcuding tomatoes
1 cup of tea ( sorry)
Lots of water

How am I doing? Have i got it?
I am still concerned about that prawn cocktail I had yesterday - seems so wrong!

CutItOutAndRestart · 06/07/2012 16:35

is there room for another one? I think I am ready to bootcamp Grin

I have recently switched to a low carb woe following a couple of months on a vlcd. I have decided to reintroduce meat into my diet now as well so I may end up wandering between here and the veggie thread.

its been ok so far trying different meats / meals with dh and the dc. I find the meals with meat leave me feeling fuller for longer and I don't feel the need to snack on cheese and nuts (like I used to do).

As I'm not used to eating or buying a lot of meat I just wondered how you all found this woe impacting on your shopping budget?

teaandthorazine · 06/07/2012 16:53

Finbar and legohouse: FAT IS GOOD! Grin

Honestly, do not fear the fat. Prawn cocktail, fab! Total full-fat, amazing!

We have all been sold a pup with this low-fat thing - it doesn't work and it makes your body unhappy! Fat is your friend - it fills you up, it keeps your blood glucose stable, it makes your skin soft. Fat makes your brain work and helps your body properly absorb all those vitamins you're eating in your lovely, natural, clean meat and veg and eggs.

And most of all, eating fat will burn fat. It's essential for this WOE. Keep the faith, forget what you think you know about weightloss, and keep eating the fat.

(here endeth the lesson!)

teaandthorazine · 06/07/2012 17:02

cutitout - I think it's fair to say this isn't the cheapest WOE sometimes! I find the freedom to indulge in cheese, meats, seafood etc a bit hard to resist and probably do end up spending a little more than I did previously.

However, I'm saving a lot by not buying crap snack foods, cake, biscuits, choc etc. Plus less on booze. And the really good news is that the cheaper cuts of meat are often the best for low-carbing because they're the fattiest (and therefore tastiest!) We're confirmed pork belly addicts in this house now - much cheaper than our usual roast! So in the end I think it evens out pretty much. And eating well is an investment in the longterm, imo...

MrsHerculePoirot · 06/07/2012 17:41

Well done MNP that is fab news back at nearly your lowest!

mumto2lovelygals · 06/07/2012 17:50

Well just started today. Had 2 rashers of bacon and one egg scrambled for breakfast, coronation chicken salad for lunch but I only have a tin of mushroom soup in for dinner. The fridge has broken and I have to wait for my new one until tomorrow.

Weighed in at 61.8 kilos, 9st10lbs this morning and aiming for goal of 9st.

So hopefully on the right track, did not feel hungry at all which has surprised me.

Oh and anybody got any good breakfast ideas as I used to be such a cereal or toast gal.

Thegoddessblossom · 06/07/2012 18:10

Lovelygals- breakfast could be eggs, philly cheese wrapped in ham, full fat greek yog with berries, bacon and eggs, omelette, or last night's left overs. One of the hardest things to do is break the thinking that you have to eat "normal breakfast" things for breakfast. The Chinese eat vegetables for breakfast all the time. Eat a portion of low carb shepherds pie (on recipe thread - made with celeriac or swede instead of potato) or whatever you had the night before. Trust me you will be fuller on that than toast or cereal. Cereal, bar shredded wheat and porridge has sugar in it - even bran flakes - even special K - even muesli - loads and loads of sugar.

BIWItheBold · 06/07/2012 18:28

NO FRUIT IN BOOTCAMP!

Minor but lively disaster has struck! I'm having a 'significant' birthday tomorrow and my fiancé is working abroad, so my lovely friends have organised a day out for us. It involves lots of Champagne and afternoon tea, complete with sandwiches and loads of cakes. They've been so thoughtful and have put so much effort into all this. I think I'll just enjoy the day and hop back on the wagon on Sunday. Does that sound like the right approach?

BIWItheBold · 06/07/2012 18:37

I think so! Enjoy and very happy birthday!

Thegoddessblossom · 06/07/2012 20:16

Happy birthday amax!!!

legohouse · 06/07/2012 20:19

thanks for the welcome and the advice about learning to love fat!! it is soo heavily embedded into my being that fat is to be avoided at all costs that i am frightened to give it a try,but i must, even though i have lost 3 stone by eating low carb/low fat my hair is falling out and i have terrible mouth ulcers,my body must be lacking and struggling to function, hopefully introducing fat back into my life will solve all these problems and hopefully i can lose the last half stone.

SharonGless · 06/07/2012 20:54

Hi legohouse
Which diet have you been following? Well done on your 3 stone loss that's amazing. Hopefully if you start on this woe you will lose your last wee bit, feel amazing and ce able to maintain for years ahead. That's how I am looking at it

SharonGless · 06/07/2012 20:57

Amaxapax, which decade are you entering
if you don't Mind me asking? There are a couple of us on here about to hit 40 on next couple of weeks, may we need a virtual celebration!
