Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 12 (but Newbies always welcome!)

BIWItheBold · 02/07/2012 08:04

Wow! Three months almost completed. I'm amazed what everyone has achieved, and really impressed how many people are still here!

They say it takes 100 days to make something a habit, and by the end of this week we will pretty much have reached that. Hopefully eating this way will have become much more 'normal' for us all now.

As requested, I have change the title of the thread, so that others interested in low carbing can find us more easily. I will also re-post the rules and the list of allowed veg:

The Carnivore Rules

1.Eat three, proper meals a day.
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food
Focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs. Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. You can have them, but just not every day. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Eat lots of fat.
Eating fat helps you to burn fat. Honestly! Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though, as this is too sweet), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ?
This is where your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

*5.Be careful about dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited). It can impede weight loss for some people. If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but don't overdo it. Full fat yoghurt is the best way to include dairy in your diet - but beware, it does contain carbs. Total Full Fat is the best.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol
If you really can't do this - at least try and restrict it to the weekend. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine.

8.No fruit
Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada.

9.No nuts/seeds
Whilst these are really good to snack on later - it can be too easy to start snacking on these - and before you know it, all your carbs have gone on nuts. Seriously - in bootcamp - don't do it to yourself.

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Allowed veg

Don?t eat any veg unless it?s on this list, and try and focus on eating those that are under 3g carbs per 100g:

Spinach0.8
Celery0.9

Orange or red pepper6.4
Ginger (peeled)7.2

Veggie Rules

Only slightly adapted from BIWI's but best to take notice of the changes if you're vegetarian.

Focus on pure, natural ingredients as the basis for your meals. Vegetarian Sausages and Burgers are ok in small quantities, but check the carb count as some can be very high. Avoid foods marketed as 'Low Carb' such as Atkins Daybreak Bars, etc.

Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating plenty of vegetables and salads with your food ?
This is where most of your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable.

8.No fruit
Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada.

9.Beware of Nuts and Seeds.
Nuts are a very good way to include more fat and protein in your diet, however some are very high carb (e.g. Cashews). Stick to small amounts of Almonds, Brazil Nuts, Dried Coconut, Walnuts, Seeds and Peanut Butter, but check the ingredients, many supermarket brands have sugar added.

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Thegoddessblossom · 06/07/2012 21:34

Took boys for a pizza express (costs a fortune with mine as they eat off the adult menu even aged 5 and 7, ds1's fave is salad nicoise bless him) and had a cheeky glass of red, some olives and some roasted almonds. Was so full after that I haven't needed any tea!

legohouse · 06/07/2012 22:17

Hi Sharon...i joined slimming world last septemeber, don't really follow their diet though lol! i do carb free but going to get weighed has really helped to keep me going and i've made a couple of good friends along the way.

I was 11.8 stone when i joined, now down to 8.8stone,want to be 8 stone and then try to stay around that mark if i can, don't intend to put it back on,i find if i start on even the smallest amount of sugar then i can't stop so i don't have anything with sugar in the house.

Amaxapax · 06/07/2012 23:23

Sharon, I'm turning 30. Even writing it is horrifying for me. I know that your thirties are supposed to be a brilliant time. I'm just really not ready for it. I'm quite happy at 29, thank you very much.

sybilfaulty · 07/07/2012 08:08

Heartstart - at times of great stress, a few sweets were probably what your body craved at the time. Don't beat yourself up lovely. You have so much on your plate that you need to be gentle with yourself.

Had a few non LC things yesterday on my beach trip - a handful of crisps, a bit of pasta and some wine. Not huge amounts but enough to feel cross with myslef. STRICT BC for me today and tomorrow. Am on sweet stall on school fair but happily I've gone right off sweets so no temptation there!

Hope everyone has a lovely day. We had so much sun in the end yesterday that the day was glorious! We need the same for the fair today really, or noone will come!

sybilfaulty · 07/07/2012 08:10

Amax, very happy birthday to you. I hope your 30s will be wonderful. My 30s were absolutely fabulous, much better than my 20s and they were pretty good! Now enjoying my early 40s.....

jan2011 · 07/07/2012 08:12

legohouse i also lost weight doing lowcarb and low fat and find myself feeling much more stable and better having added fats in.

heartstart sorry for everything going on for you at the minute - hugs

amax i turned 30 earlier this year. still can't believe im 30 - still have to get the anti aging creams - which ones are the best anyone know? lol yeah this is the decade we are supposed to be all sorted within ourselves, be all confident and have a lot of fun. yeah right! have to say though, that has been true for me in one way - since having my baby my life has been better than ever! She rocks my world!

Thegoddessblossom · 07/07/2012 08:14

OK so weighed this morning and was 9.6 which is UNACCEPTABLE so strict bootcamp for me this weekend.

B: 2 bacon 2 egg.

sybilfaulty · 07/07/2012 08:36

I have just tried on a lovely wrap dress which is a 12 and I could even leave the house in it! I am amazed. Thanks for all the support and guidance.

Better stop drinking the wine and noshing the carbs or I'll be confined to base in it again!

BIWItheBold · 07/07/2012 10:07

Thegoddess - perhaps its time to have a really honest look at what you're eating? Your cheats, as well as your high carb breakfast, will all be contributing to your weight gain. Sorry if you don't want to hear that, but it's true.

Lorelilee · 07/07/2012 11:07

Quick question - how many carbs are in a bottle of wine? Not really feeling vodka and am going to a party tonight.... (I know I will drink a whole bottle, so just preparing myself...)

Jins · 07/07/2012 11:13

For red wine there's about 2g in 100ml so in a standard 750ml bottle there's about 15g.

SpringGoddess · 07/07/2012 11:16

anywhere between 15 and 22 per bottle.

BettySuarez · 07/07/2012 13:44

Please feel free to give me all a huge kick up the backside today as things have slid these past few days.

I keep trying to tell myself that I only have a few more pounds to loose and then I will be a quarter of the way to goal Smile

Thegoddessblossom · 07/07/2012 13:46

Oh don't worry BIWI I know why! Have been cheating far too much recently.

Need to get back to 9.3 and then maintain with occasional treats instead of daily.

Lunch - tuna, coleslaw, salad, cucumber, mushrooms.

Off to the gym this avo.

jan2011 · 07/07/2012 16:13

oh i wish i could get the motivation to get the gym today especially as mum has taken the baby for a few hours. but the afternoon is nearly gone and ive done the ironing and cooking... maybe i will do the wii dance!!

poor ds heartstart...so sorry....hugs

ZimboMum · 07/07/2012 19:32

So I did the food shopping today and discovered onken natural set yoghurt is same carbs as total but is about half the price on morrisons at the mo.

Also had a look at their nut section as I fancied some macadamias, which they didn't have. Looked at plain unsalted pistachios and the packet said they were 31g/carb per 100g!! Now I was sure that was wrong but darednt risk it just in case!!

Feeling a bit low today and like I constantly need to graze on something. Haven't cheated at all for ages and still feel a big fat blob. Any words of inspiration?

PMMummy · 07/07/2012 19:41

Baaaaad daySad
DCs just seemed to constantly whine today so 1 week in I succumbed to chocolate - didn't enjoy it one bit and am so annoyed with myself. So water water water for me and back to strict eating tomorrow.

vnmum · 07/07/2012 19:48

hi all, welcome all newbies Smile

I am struggling at the moment. Since my D and V earlier in the week my appetite has been really off. I am only really eating 1 meal a day as I just don't fancy anything. I know I need to eat something or my body will start to cannibalise my muscle but the thought of all my usual things just makes me bleurgh. I am craving carbs too, probably from being ill etc but trying hard not to give in.
I really don't know what to eat. I can't face eggs, belly pork, lamb, sausages anymore. I know I can't go on hardly eating for much longer. Sad

HumphreyCobbler · 07/07/2012 20:28

vnmum - salad with lovely oily dressing? fish pie with cheese sauce? A few celeriac chips?

Do hope you feel better soon.

Have just been reading THE BOOK (ETDT). Fascinating.

SpringGoddess · 07/07/2012 20:45

So sorry to hear so many posters feeing so challenged by their diets. I would suggest a lovely glass of red wine to cheer you up. No way are pistachios 31g/100g must have been a typo.

ILoveStripeySocks · 07/07/2012 21:17

Zimbo, I just watched a documentary called Fat Head, which has totally inspired me to keep going! It has made me realise that this is for life, and not just for weight loss! I really want to convert the children now too, but I dont know how to do it without making them feel deprived?

SharonGless · 07/07/2012 21:26

Vnmum Parmesan crisps?
Do you need a proper meal in you or at you just picking?

I have not cheated at all today but I have succumbed to the gin tonight.

Those who are feeling down I can really recommend reading the idiot proof diet book especially the chapter on emotional eating. It explains that eating isnt going to make you feel ny better, in fact just the opposite, so why do it? Make wise choices and think about why you are eating, not just what ou are eating

Am channelling BIWI - water, water, water

vnmum · 07/07/2012 22:26

sharon for the past few days I have just managed a small meal in the evening and nothing but water all day. I just have no drive to eat anything. Yesterday I only had my evening meal because I thought I should eat something not because I actually wanted it.
