Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 12 (but Newbies always welcome!)

BIWItheBold · 02/07/2012 08:04

Wow! Three months almost completed. I'm amazed what everyone has achieved, and really impressed how many people are still here!

They say it takes 100 days to make something a habit, and by the end of this week we will pretty much have reached that. Hopefully eating this way will have become much more 'normal' for us all now.

As requested, I have change the title of the thread, so that others interested in low carbing can find us more easily. I will also re-post the rules and the list of allowed veg:

The Carnivore Rules

1.Eat three, proper meals a day.
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food
Focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs. Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. You can have them, but just not every day. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Eat lots of fat.
Eating fat helps you to burn fat. Honestly! Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though, as this is too sweet), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ?
This is where your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

*5.Be careful about dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited). It can impede weight loss for some people. If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but don't overdo it. Full fat yoghurt is the best way to include dairy in your diet - but beware, it does contain carbs. Total Full Fat is the best.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol
If you really can't do this - at least try and restrict it to the weekend. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine.

8.No fruit
Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada.

9.No nuts/seeds
Whilst these are really good to snack on later - it can be too easy to start snacking on these - and before you know it, all your carbs have gone on nuts. Seriously - in bootcamp - don't do it to yourself.

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Allowed veg

Don?t eat any veg unless it?s on this list, and try and focus on eating those that are under 3g carbs per 100g:

Spinach0.8
Celery0.9

French beans4.7
Cabbage5
Yellow pepper5.3
Carrots6
Orange or red pepper6.4
Ginger (peeled)7.2
Butternut squash7.5

Veggie Rules

Only slightly adapted from BIWI's but best to take notice of the changes if you're vegetarian.

Focus on pure, natural ingredients as the basis for your meals. Vegetarian Sausages and Burgers are ok in small quantities, but check the carb count as some can be very high. Avoid foods marketed as 'Low Carb' such as Atkins Daybreak Bars, etc.

Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating plenty of vegetables and salads with your food ?
This is where most of your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable.

5.Be careful about dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited). It can impede weight loss for some people. 8.No fruit
Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada.

9.Beware of Nuts and Seeds.
Nuts are a very good way to include more fat and protein in your diet, however some are very high carb (e.g. Cashews). Stick to small amounts of Almonds, Brazil Nuts, Dried Coconut, Walnuts, Seeds and Peanut Butter, but check the ingredients, many supermarket brands have sugar added.

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Humphrey you asked about PMS a little while ago and I have had the same results as you. Just before I started this woe in April I went to the Dr as I was finding my PMS very tough going, I was feeling depressed and irritable for a few days before my period started. It got so bad that my very very laid back husband said that everyone was treading on eggshells around me for those few days and it was time to get some help. I was waiting for the Dr to come back to me with a gyni referral when I started this woe.

The first month there was no change, but it was only within a few days of starting. The second month I was a week late but then started with no warning, no depression, no irritability and no wary husband - it was unbelievable. This month I'm now 10 days late and although I did find myself crying over a dog in the newspaper (wtf) I don't feel any other PMS symptoms and I'm sure I'll start soon.

I can only put this down to the change in my diet having been a serial snacker of the very very worst sort. I am a sugar addict and would happily eat a giant chocolate bar every night having snacked all day. If for no other reason I will stick to this woe because the impact on the whole family of my PMS wasn't great not to mention me of course.

Whilst we're talking about changes I posted that a few days ago I spent some time in hospital with DS and went well and truely off the rails - it was a carb fest. The day we got home I had the most horrendous kidney stone pain, I've suffered from them in the past but not for some time. As soon as I got home I went back onto this woe and the pain went. Not sure if there's a connection there, but I suspect there is.

Sorry for long ramble.

Cherries and nectarines are too high carb for weight loss but you should be able to eat 1-2 portions a day on maintenance. If you really can't live without fruit then raspberries are your best option but keep it to less than 100g in a day and try and not have them every day.

VerityBrulee · 06/07/2012 10:57

Good news, thanks Queen Smile I must familiarise myself with carb counts of the different friuts.

VerityBrulee · 06/07/2012 11:00

notmost that's really good to hear, one of the reasons I'm doing this is to try and kick my chocolate habit, especially the week before my period when I could eat a bar (or two Blush) a day.

SpringGoddess · 06/07/2012 11:48

Good news here, I've lost all my holiday weight and so has dh - we didn't pig out btw - 3 meals a day but occassionally our meals were more carby and my mouth happened to collide with a few puds, quite by accident you understand.

The plan is to get a few lbs below our target in preparation for the next holiday at the end of the month - this one is staying with family and I just don't want our diet to make things difficult - we'll navigate quietly around the potatoes, I just don't want to be a pain in the butt guest. Grin And just in case BIWI is listening - loads of water!!!!

MNP · 06/07/2012 12:11

Morning, a lb off since Wednesday, so almost back to lowest weight on record so far.

Thegoddessblossom · 06/07/2012 13:18

Lunch: magic mushrooms, fried courgette and bacon. Greek yog with strawbs.

Swam a mile this morning.

Need to up my water. Have not weighed for a few weeks (didn't see a point really, I am either 9.3 or 9.5 - always) Might just check tomorrow.

catinboots · 06/07/2012 13:38

Magic mushrooms for lunch Thegoddess

Shock Grin
SpringGoddess · 06/07/2012 13:44

We had the mushrooms for lunch yesterday with bacon lardons - quick and very tasty.

Thegoddessblossom · 06/07/2012 13:49

I know get me - but I don't think I did them right, too much cream maybe, had to pour some away......

BIWItheBold · 06/07/2012 13:50

I may have had frites ...

OP posts:
NigellasGuest · 06/07/2012 14:00

BIWI !!! Shock I am assuming these were not the celeriac kind?

NMP: what you describe with the cycle is very interesting to me - my period has failed to come altogether this month so far, and was very late last month - I'd assumed menopause but perhaps it's the WOE and my cycle will readjust at some point when I do not know

Thegoddessblossom · 06/07/2012 14:02

BIWI!!!! You've only been there 5 minutes!!

Does it help to know I have had 2 holidays in France since I started this WOE and not a croissant, bit of baguette or a single frite passed my lips??? No thought not.

Biwi, relax, enjoy, eat frites, you are on your jollies.

HumphreyCobbler · 06/07/2012 14:05

BIWI Shock Grin

thanks NotMost, that is very interesting reading about PMS. This has blighted my life for years. It has made it hard to do my job, impossible to stick to a healthy (as such...) eating plan, given me anxiety attacks and made me an utter bitch to live with.

If this WOE is the answer, I am profoundly grateful for this thread.

BIWItheBold · 06/07/2012 14:10

In my defence - we had been walking around for ages, finally found the restaurant and I ordered steak and salad. The frites were a surprise but I was so ravenous that I ate half of them Blush

OP posts:
BIWItheBold · 06/07/2012 14:11

... they were bloody marvellous Grin

NigellasGuest · 06/07/2012 14:15

NigellasGuest · 06/07/2012 14:17

Humphrey has your cycle gone weird?

sadalot · 06/07/2012 14:38

Hi everyone ,love to join this inspiring thread .
Weight today is 12 stone, got baby sis wedding on oct 4 and she wants me to look sexy

HumphreyCobbler · 06/07/2012 15:00

I can't tell yet NigellasGuest, but there is no such thing as a normal length cycle for me. I will let you know.

teaandthorazine · 06/07/2012 15:01

BIWI Shock Shock Shock (drink some water! Wink)

Lunch was three eggs scrambled with butter and Philly. And some smoked salmon. Dinner will be low-carb moussaka from the IPD book (except that I appear to be sans aubergine... hmmm

I've just had a fab new crop haircut, all the better to show off those emerging cheekbones mwahahahaaaaa.

Am dreading the weekend - have got to go to a wedding on my own, which I don't mind in itself but I'm not going to know another soul there except the bride. I was a bridesmaid at her first wedding, so I kinda have to go to this one! But unfortunately the bloke she's now marrying is a bit of a [ahem] imo, and I think he's done a good job of isolating her from all her old friends... ho hum.

Hopefully it'll be sunny all day so I can be the slim, attractive and mysterious stranger in sunglasses Grin

HumphreyCobbler · 06/07/2012 15:06

Oooh, I want some emerging cheekbones.... Envy
