Well some of you are, clearly!

And I notice more talk about maintenance, which is evidently a very good sign.

I think the best way for maintenance is to gradually increase your carbs until weight loss either stops or you find that you're putting weight back on.

Don't rush out and fall face first into a plate of pasta, though! Start with fruit and veg (be careful with which fruits and how much), and possibly some legumes - e.g. lentils, or beans - i.e. we're looking to add 'good' carbs into the diet, rather than rush straight into 'accessible' carbs which have an immediate impact on your blood sugars.

Today is Day 1 of Week 1 in my 'let's get that last half stone off' before I go on holiday. (Except that last night's meal, plus a bit of 'eye off the ball' time, means it's more than half a stone now ...)

I have been lurking for the past couple of weeks. Have been pretty good although have had wine and coffee but have lost 6lbs in just over 2 weeks. Just another 6lbs to go.

I'm 40 in August and want to be at my fighting weight.

This WOE is brilliant BIWI so thank you! I even made gingerbread yesterday and resisted the temptation to taste them.

For me - looking better in my clothes is such a motivation.

I am also now addicted to roast fennel - god its delicious!

tartiflette · 29/06/2012 21:01

Well done Humphrey, I hope you have a fabulous time tomorrow.

That link was fascinating fiddle thanks for that. I think understanding the science behind it all has really contributed to my motivation this time around. I would just like to add mine to the voices saying thank you to BIWI and all who post here. Although only recently delurked, I have read this thread daily since I started this woe 6 weeks ago and it's been a huge factor in my success so far. When I've lost weight in the past - and I've done so many many times - I've always got to about the stage I am now and sort of slowly tailed off, I think probably because I wasn't really fat any more, so I felt like just being a bit podgy was 'good enough'. This time I don't feel like that, I know I can get down to a properly slim target and can even start to envisage how I will maintain that too.
So a huge thank you for all your advice, encouragement, links and daily menus - it all helps.

teaandthorazine · 29/06/2012 21:04

hilly - tesco chicken tikka balti with one naan is 66g of carbs, apparently here. Did you have a chat with your dh about low-carbing, then?

SingingTunelessly · 29/06/2012 21:06

Hilly, not sure tbh. I know that BIWI says that Indian is the best option apart from rice and naan so hopefully it's ok.

Humphrey have a great day, sounds like you will look fab. Enjoy!

Penis no alcohol on Bootcamp! Although will confess that is why my Bootcamp only lasted 5 days Blush. BUT even on Bootcamp lite, which I find easy, the weight is still coming off. Hurrah! I just do my best to limit alcohol to Friday and Saturday. Dry wine is one of the best choices btw. . Grin

hillyhilly · 29/06/2012 21:10

I did thanks Tea, he is giving it a go, helped by the fact that his favourite sandwich shop has gone bust (he previously would not contemplate lunch that wasnt sandwiches) so I am making him a packed lunch for the days he is not out being entertained, we got sideswiped last night by the fact that the steak restaurant we planned to go to was full so he ended up having a cheeseburger on a caesar salad - he did leave all the croutons!
I don't know how low carb he can realistically get (eats out a lot so little influence sometimes) but he is certainly going to be eating significantly fewer than previously. He has also agreed to give up beer (only, not wine or G&T) for a month to see what effect it has.
I am hoping that as he has a lot of weight to lose, he will get a significant result in the next 2-3 weeks as he loses heart v quickly, blames his work and goes back to previous sloppy habits (grr)]I think you'll be hearing more from me, there's a lot of great information here.
Thanks again

teaandthorazine · 29/06/2012 21:22

Good for him - and you! The really positive thing about low-carbing is that men especially tend to see very quick results so hopefully he won't lose heart this time. And it'll make such a difference to his blood sugars too!

NigellasGuest · 29/06/2012 21:55

Jacaqueen thank you for that lovely post, reading posts like that helps to keep me strong! and fiddledefat I have found your sciency post extremely useful. And everyone else thank you for all your posts, newbies, oldies or inbetweenies - sometimes the thread moves too fast for me to really keep up especially when I'm not online for a day or so, but I do love this thread everybody!

My situation today is that I was relatively hungry this morning and had breakfast, early lunch and late lunch if that makes sense. (B: avocado with some mayo then 4 large strawberries with some cream and coconut oil; EL: scrambled egg with some prawns, cream and feta mixed in; LL: prawns and mayo).
LL was at about 2.15. And I have been unable to eat since as I feel stuffed and faintly sick. Am drinking loads of water. Can't stand the thought of dinner. I hope if I give dinner a miss that that won't count as skipping a meal and have an adverse effect on things..... anyone know?

NigellasGuest · 29/06/2012 21:58

reading my last post back, I realise I haven't had any enough vegetables.
could that make me feel nauseous? hmmmmmmm
a bit late to have a load of veg now, I feel too yukky to eat anyway.

Note to self: lots of veg tomorrow!

SingingTunelessly · 29/06/2012 22:18

Nigella, I have a serious loss of appetite which I was so worried would slow down weight loss by sending me into starvation mode. But I think it was Queenstromba who said not to worry about that on this woe. Scroll down some posts if you want to. Very helpfully Queen explained about the body burning fat and not needing any additional fat apart from its stores. Hope that makes sense, Queen explained far better than me.

tartiflette · 29/06/2012 22:47

Meant to say before, Jaca, what an lovely post and a real inspiration to keep on keeping on when the scales don't seem to be shifting.

B: Two eggs mashed with mayonnaise
L: Slices of pastrami wrapped around cheesy coleslaw (seriously gorgeous)
D: Mackerel in cream sauce with buttered green beans and broccoli.
Snack: slice of St Agur cheese.
3 coffees, 2.5l water.

Seriously, best diet ever Grin

NotMostPeople · 29/06/2012 23:02

I did a bad thing.

I ate a bagel, it was good.

I've been having stomach cramps and feeling nauseas and craved carbs and caved in and tbh the bagel did help.

Will I be out of ketosis now? Is it going to take days to get back into the rhythm?

SharonGless · 29/06/2012 23:08

Ooooh lots of lovely posts tonight lets have a group pat on the back.

Humphrey - the milestones are hard but I am so glad that you have something positive for the wedding. Glad you are going to swish in looking gorgeous. Have a fab time

Mrs Campbell black- I am joining the 40 club in August too. Will post properly about my feelings on this when back on a pc

Nigella a very belated happy birthday - sorry I have been skimming thread this week

Olivia mumsnet - have you meal planned then? If not may I suggest you do, it makes life a lot easier ime

SingingTunelessly · 29/06/2012 23:34

Notmostpeople - a Bagel! Shock. I'll leave BIWI to sort you out. Run, my friend, run Grin

MNP · 30/06/2012 00:44

As long as you enjoyed it, drank excessive gallons of H2O and are back on track you can hope BIWI skims past the mention NMP

sybilfaulty · 30/06/2012 08:26

oh dearie dearie me

I went out and had the most delicious steak, bearnaise, rocket and parmesan. Swapped chips for green beans and shallots. Delish. HOWEVER, had 2 glasses red (first wine in 3 weeks though I have had an odd G and T) and fell apart. Fell asleep on train and missed stop. Lost cash card. Came home and collapsed. Feel like had 2 bottles this am. Will it undo my good work?

HAven't read anyone else's post yet but hope you are all well and doing well Smile

Thegoddessblossom · 30/06/2012 09:15

Sybil you total lightweight. :)

SingingTunelessly · 30/06/2012 09:27

Sybil Grin. I've found unfortunately red wine does put weight on quickly, the scales always go slightly upwards after a couple of glasses. Water, water, water!

Heartstart · 30/06/2012 10:14

Sybil - you joust made me feel better even if you aren't Grin I had steak spinach and green beans with 2 gin and slimline and a toffee and feel dreadful today

BettySuarez · 30/06/2012 10:37

Sybil sweetheart - you are now officially a 'cheap date' and men will flock to you Grin

studyingstudying · 30/06/2012 10:52

Hi everyone,

Thank you to those who were nice to me about studying ( Jan ) - I think I just wanted some sympathy :) Its nearly over now - Monday is my last day.

I have been sticking to the plan (I think...are cashew nuts ok??) recently and lost a couple of pounds. However, I am being taken on holiday on Monday to celebrate the end of uni! Eek.

I am going to try my best to avoid carbs and eat lots of salad, but what is the best alcohol to drink (its inevitable that there shall be some...). Upthread someone suggest dry white wine? Or gin & tonic (slimline or non?)? Help please! Shall stay away from the cocktails, unless someone knows of a suitable one?

Anyway, I am excited about it! And hoping for some sun.
I am jealous of those people eating steak - I've been eating mainly ready prepared/microwave stuff at uni. But shall get back on the proper meat soon!

chullah · 30/06/2012 11:18

Whispers hello.

Having just spent a 3 hr car journey on MN (!), this is the place I need to be. Am quite frankly kidding myself that my own diets work and now it's lifestyle change time.

I have some experience of low carb so reading your threads, some bits were familiar but one query - is fresh tuna steak allowed ?

Many thanks for any replies - I shall post in a bit more detail once we get out of this flaming car !!!!

BIWItheBold · 30/06/2012 11:20

Morning all! Some very lovely posts.

I'm at friends now - and was cooked a beautiful, low carb meal (which is why they are such lovely friends):

Starter - smoked duck and duck pate with salad leaves dressed with olive oil
Main - pan-fried brill with a creamy tarragon sauce, broccoli, sugar snap peas and asparagus
Dessert - mixed berries with cream, followed by cheese

The only thing others had that I didn't was new potatoes and crackers with the cheese - both of which I was quite happy to miss out

We shall gloss over the wine consumption, although its fair to say that I am a lightweight now, and had to cave in and go to bed with some painkillers while everyone was still at it!

But how fab it is to be able to eat food like that and still know that you are keeping to your diet Smile

OP posts:
BIWItheBold · 30/06/2012 11:24

Challah - welcome! Any fresh meat or fish that isn't processed is zero carbs, so tuna steak is perfect

Re question about takeaway - chapatti is NOT a low carb choice! But Indian generally is a lot easier than Chinese as they tend not to use sugar (although avoid korma/tikka masala as they often do have sugar). But often lots of onion in sauces which can make it carby. Best to avoid sauces and have tikka/tandoori dishes instead, and lower carb veg side dishes, like spinach, mushroom or cauliflower

OP posts:
smokinaces · 30/06/2012 11:24

Last night we went for italian. Was worried as obviously pasta and brussetta feature heavily but I did well.

Chargrilled veg with goats cheese for starter - bit of balsamic but not too much

Main I had veal in.creamy mushroom sauce. I had a salad with it.

One glass of red, one diet coke and a gallon of water.

Off to the cinema today and out for lunch. Litre of water in my bag for cinema. No sweets or popcorn allowed. Hoping nandos for lunch ;-)

OliviaLMumsnet · 30/06/2012 11:40

Snort at dictatorial benevolence
I need to get me some of that.
