Just sent dh to work with my first ever fridge porridge experiment. Think i might have got a bit carried away with the oats as it's rather huge and heavy. Still, he could probably use it to fight of bears on the way to work if need be Blush

for the people who have protein shakes, what are the nicest flavours? I tried a toffee one the other day, it wasnt too bad but very sickly sweet, i couldnt finish it. then this morning a tried a strawbery and cream one, it was actually really gross.
do you mix with water or milk?

I tried the chocolate protein shake yesterday and the vanilla today. I wasn't keen on the toffee either. I'm still not sure about them, tbh. It feels like I can taste the artificial flavouring in them, and they taste a tiny bit bitter to me.

Chocolate and vanilla were definitely better than toffee, though. I mix mine with hazelnut milk, a banana, some flaxseed and a big spoonful of greek yogurt.

ShirleyKnot · 20/06/2012 09:42

socks - What did you set your activity level at? If you set it to "moderate" then you shouldn't be eating back your calories for exercise UNLESS you end up being under your BMR. The calorie burn is already built into your TDEE less cut.

Protein shakes - I think my next order is going to be the vanilla one or possibly the unflavoured. I agree that some of them are VERY sweet. The latte one was nice - and I have read that you can make up the shake with milk and add a cold cup of coffee to make an iced latte type affair.

I've got a bit of a strange tummy today. I ate a couple of oreos last night - and I'll tell you exactly why that happened - LACK OF PLANNING. I haven't sorted out my meal plans for this week yet or been shopping so I've been scrabbling bits and bobs together all week. This always equals disasterous choices for me! What were the fucking oreo's doing in the house anyway? Grin. I was still ok calorie wise but I'm wondering if my stomach is reacting to the stupid delicious biscuits.

Oh I love the toffee one! Mind you, I have a very sweet tooth. I usually have them in banana smoothies rather than just by itself, just as Toby suggests. I didn't much like the strawberry one either.

The unflavoured one is good for putting into things, so I have some of that for apple and cinnamon smoothies. I'm going to try some baking with it next week. I'm hoping I don't end up with cakes I can bounce off walls. Grin

TobyLerone · 20/06/2012 09:52

I set my activity level to 'moderate' and never put in things like school runs etc. I only include activity over and above a normal day. I've been putting in a lot of cleaning and moving boxes lately because it's definitely more than is included in a normal day DP is moving in with me and there's a lot of clearing out to do, and a lot of shifting his crap-- things into my house.

Sugar is the devil

Don't forget that

CJCregg · 20/06/2012 10:04

Hi all, just checking in.

I have been very good and am feeling the benefits Grin. Made a Jamie Oliver Thai Prawn Curry last night - God, it was fantastic - and had it with cauliflower rice. I am eating a few too many oatcakes but everything is generally going in the right direction.

I just CBA to fill in my diary every day, though Blush. I think it's a throwback to WW - I have built up a resistance to tracking my food because it's so fucking tedious.

Shirley, it's over a mile each way for school, plus i run a pub so im on my feet at work as well. I've got a fitbit (pedometer thingy) which links up with mfp so it should be quite accurate for calories used. I'll double check all the settings though just to make sure.

Where do you buy the protein shakes from?

TobyLerone · 20/06/2012 10:19

But if you're counting all your calories used, surely your activity level should be set at 'none' (or whatever it says), so that you don't count it twice. Otherwise, lots of your daily activity is already included in your 'moderate' setting, then you're counting it again on MFP.

ShirleyKnot · 20/06/2012 10:26

socks - if that's in your normal, everyday routine then you shouldn't be counting it! If you have correctly assesed your TDEE then the only part of your exercise you should be eating back would be your kettleball workout - and only then if it takes your net calories back to under your BMR.

BUT! I'm wondering actually if you're doing your BMR and TDEE or whether you've just had a lightbulb moment about eating ENOUGH! This in itself is grand but I am worried that you might be miscalculating.

how do i stop stress eating? i'm stressed because of this over here and i have 2 yong girls and trying to sell a house. my body thinks i'm hungry. i really dont think i am, i think i'm just stressed. how to i solve the problem?

TobyLerone · 20/06/2012 11:03

Oh, you poor love. Stress eating (and trying to stop it) is the last thing you ought to be worrying about just now!

Can you bung the girls in the pushchair and go for a walk?

addictediam · 20/06/2012 11:15

I can't :( I live in the middle of nowhere and can't do much during the day as I need my energy to look after them. (I have cfs)
The evening is when I go running or do zumba as they are asleep and I can go stright to bed to recover.

addictediam · 20/06/2012 11:17

I'm also not allowed to drive because of the seizure, and I think being trapped in the house and getting bored is part of the problem.

For goodness sake addicted, be kind to yourself. DOn't worry about what you're eating!

Get today out of the way in whichever way is most comfortable, if that means drinking sugary tea and eating cake then so be it.

Have you tried some deep breathing exercises to calm you down a little bit?

wherearemysocks · 20/06/2012 12:27

Thanks Shirly, I'm busy at work now but I will sit down and re-calculate it all properly later when I have more time.

MinnieBar · 20/06/2012 12:58

Well today I tried something almost new! I had sardines for lunch. I have had them in the dim and distant past, but probably over thirty years ago [old gimmer]. I know it's not exactly pushing the boat out, but it feels like quite a big step for me. I really don't try new foods very often at all.

To paraphrase Obi Wan, I have taken my first step into a larger world... Grin

ShirleyKnot · 20/06/2012 13:05

And what did you think minnie? Did you like them?

OP posts:
MinnieBar · 20/06/2012 13:17

I did! Not surprising really, since they taste not terribly different to tinned tuna.

I just had them on a slice of toast (wholemeal, seeded, natch). Not very exciting...!

quirkychick · 20/06/2012 14:17

Good luck, addicted. As Shirl and others say don't stress about what you eat today. Just be kind to yourself.

My protein shakes have come today. I have tried the toffee but agree with others that it's a bit sweet and artificial-tasting. It has whacked up my protein levels after doing weights.
