If you've poked your head around the door of this thread then please read ourOld Thread, read all the posts, all the links and the links within links and then jump in with both feet to a new, better Way Of Eating (WOE)

Roll Up, Roll Up for the all new, amazing thread for those of us who are trying to eat good, healthy, natural foods while counting our calories and eating LOADS!

We had some brilliant successes on the last thread - inches AND pounds lost and lots of people feeling happier, calmer and more focussed on their goals.

Remember that this is NOT a DIET, it is a healthy way of eating. You will NOT lose 5lbs a week - you might even GAIN weight in the first weeks!

I eat the small packs of wafer thin ham/chicken as a snack. They're 2 for £1 in Sainsbury's. Apparently cottage cheese is high in protein but I can't bring myself to eat it! Tinned tuna/sardines/pilchards. Nuts.
Could you manage some greek yogurt with fruit after your egg?

Mind you, I eat all this stuff and my protein %age is still very low.

Notanexcitingname · 19/06/2012 10:01

Hi All. I'd like to say a thank you to ShirleyKnot for what looks like a life transformation. I fell off the WW wagon about 4 years ago and although my BMI has crept up to 32 I couldn't face going back to being starving and having my sole aim in life being avoiding food.

I've been doing this WOE for just under a week and am slightly alarmed at having lost about 2.5 lbs. Can I ignore this, or should I eat more? I'm coming in at about 150 under my cals nearly every day, and not being hungry, I've not been eating them. I did do a big sports event at the weekend, and burned 1000 cals (according to MFP, must buy a heart rate monitor), and really struggled to eat back to BMR; ended up having a glass of wine to help Wink.

Feeling fab, though, hoping this is the eating breakthrough for me Smile. I am coming in too low for protein most days, but I didn't do this week's shop with this WOE in mind.

tumteetum · 19/06/2012 10:04

I do snack on nuts and sometimes have tinned mackerel for lunch, often homemade yogurt with fruit for puddings, and still I seem to struggle. Don't do cottage cheese either..

TobyLerone · 19/06/2012 10:18

I think that Shirley advises that weight loss on the scales could well be water loss for the first few weeks. I'm sure she'll be along shortly to correct me if I'm wrong, though :o
So in that case, your 2.5lbs might not be accurate as fat loss, per se, but more important is the fact that you're feeling great! And tbh, even if the loss of weight is water, it gives you a boost anyway. Just don't panic if some of it seems to have gone back on next week.

You only need to eat back your calories if your net is under your BMR. I think.

Now my bread is usually seeded wholegrain, perhaps I am not putting it in correctly. We make our own bread, and recipes are different each time and very imprecise so is just guesswork entering on mfp. Finding this for lots of foods. perhaps I am underestimating protein

TobyLerone · 19/06/2012 10:37

Try not to worry too much, tum. I would imagine that the protein you may be underestimating will be negligible.

TobyLerone · 19/06/2012 10:38

Perhaps the protein level of a whole loaf would be improved by adding some seeds, but per slice it won't make a lot of difference.

ShirleyKnot · 19/06/2012 10:41

spicy - my boys have become OBSESSED with smoothies. I usually use bananas (cut into chunks and frozen) but this moring I had run out so I made 1 mango smoothie and 1 blueberry smoothie.

3 x chunks of ice
handful of blueberries/half a pack precut mango (Shock)
Couple of dessert spoons greek yoghurt
250ish ml milk
spoldge of syrup/honey/maple syrup.

Blend.

You can use any soft fruit you like and the greek yoghurt acts as your banana thickener, IYKWIM?

notanexcitingname - Grin Tobes is right, this loss is most likely to be water, especially if you did a big old burn at the weekend. I'm so glad to hear you're feeling positive, motivated and WELL. Also, please try and eat ALL of your calories - a small handful of nuts (ARF!) can get you there (HAHA!) without being too filling.

But because the pie chart shows percentages, if you're eating 3 slices of bread a day, your overall carb percentage will be high, thereby pushing your overall protein percentage down.

quirkychick · 19/06/2012 11:02

Seeded bread is so much better for you too.

Notanexcitingname · 19/06/2012 11:23

Thanks all Smile OK, I mistakenly thought I wouldn't get the water loss-and I promise not to be alarmed if it goes back on next week. Promise to try harder with the calories, though I've not gone below BMR. Getting sick of nuts, will try some more variety.

HearMyRoar · 19/06/2012 12:32

Hello everyone!

I too am struggling with the protein. i went on a mission yesterday to eat lots and managed to get to around 30 under but that was going all out eating tuna and cottage cheese for lunch and then gammon and eggs for dinner. I think i might try getting some soya beans and tofu and make some kind of pate thing for snacking on.

I am also finding imputting tricky because i cook lots from scratch and tend to cook by feel rather then weighing things so am having to get into the habit of recording how much of each ingredient i use and then using the recipe bit.

I love cottage cheese! Yy to yoghurt in smoothies I don't do bananas (except occasionally and not mushed up). Yoghurt, mango, milk and vanilla is particularly popular in this house. Without the milk for a healthy yoghurt dessert.

I'm waiting for my protein shakes to arrive and hoping if I have been particularly active it will up my calories and my protein macros.

I am currently eating an ice lolly made from frozen galia melon- yum, yum.

HearMyRoar · 19/06/2012 13:51

Just went to have my lunch and realised that rather then buying cottage cheese i had accidently picked up something with the rather sci fi name of quark. In all my cheese eating years i have never heard of this stuff but have eaten it anyway. It was actually alright, kinda like runny soft cheese, and it turns out it has the same protein levels as cottage cheese but less calories.

So where's the catch?

ShirleyKnot · 19/06/2012 14:00

Nothing HearMyRoar! Quark is amazing stuff - you can make lower calories puddings, use it to make cheese sauces (I used it to make a lower calorie lasagne once) and LOADS of things. I love quark.

HearMyRoar · 19/06/2012 14:02

Gosh! Thanks Shirley. What a fortuitious accident :o

Umami · 19/06/2012 15:11

Plus, I understand quarks come in 6 different flavours.

Hullygully · 19/06/2012 15:21

It's all too complicated and there are too many threads.

What about liposuction?

MrsMangoBiscuit · 19/06/2012 15:24

Two slices of Hovis Wholemeal Granary is 9g of protein according to MFP.

After losing those 7lbs, I've put some back on, and I don't care! Clothes still feel loose, and I can probably bounce coins off my thighs at the momment!Grin

I've been having a lot of fun experimenting with healthier baking, so thanks for all the suggestions. Spelt cookies were a big hit. DD wasn't keen on the no butter/sugar flatjacks, more for me. The wholemeal and banana muffins were a bit meh though, so I will carry on trying to make them healthy and tasty.

I would like to start doing some more weights at home, ideally something I can do of an evening in front of the TV. Does anyone have any reccommendations? I'm also thinking of getting a heart rate monitor. Again, reccommendations needed please.

MrsMangoBiscuit · 19/06/2012 15:28

Cross posted with a few there. Quark is a soft cheese?? Star trek fan here, <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/4/42/QuarkDS9.jpg/250px-QuarkDS9.jpg&imgrefurl=en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quark_%28Star_Trek%29&h=236&w=250&sz=13&tbnid=qvLYLkp997fOFM:&tbnh=98&tbnw=104&zoom=1&usg=___qsOVvxQ2mfSBO1cfrmOYr0Jkw4=&docid=3pLSJF_Xo4Px4M&sa=X&ei=rovgT9rWHNCD8gONrKSVDw&ved=0CIkBEPUBMAk&dur=895" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">THIS is Quark!

I don't think I could bring myself to eat it. Although I would love to see DH's face when I tell him he's eating Quark sauce! Grin

Umami · 19/06/2012 15:28

Isn't a no sugar/ no butter flapjack just a bowl of oats?? Grin

I've been gradually easing down the sugar in my standard flapjack recipe, but have been upping the butter a little to give them a bit of extra sticking-together power to make up for loss of sugar.
