If you've poked your head around the door of this thread then please read ourOld Thread, read all the posts, all the links and the links within links and then jump in with both feet to a new, better Way Of Eating (WOE)

Roll Up, Roll Up for the all new, amazing thread for those of us who are trying to eat good, healthy, natural foods while counting our calories and eating LOADS!

We had some brilliant successes on the last thread - inches AND pounds lost and lots of people feeling happier, calmer and more focussed on their goals.

Remember that this is NOT a DIET, it is a healthy way of eating. You will NOT lose 5lbs a week - you might even GAIN weight in the first weeks!

Hello! Can I come and join your gang? :)

I have been lurking about like some kind of creepy stalker ghost for about a week now and am totally converted to this new WOE. I do have lots of questions though.

I have joined MFP and have been inputting for the past few days (it does take bloody ages doesn't it!). After working out all the numbers on the calculator gubbins I have put my goal calories as 2300 as I am currently breastfeeding a 12 week old (this is also my excuse for the cake and chocolate I have been scoffing for the past 3 months). So question 1 is do I just ignore the projected weight it gives you at the bottom when you finish inputting your food for the day as mine just keeps telling me how fat I'm going to get. Or is there something I have missed that will change this?

I'm also rather interested in the low sugar business some of you are doing. So question 2: When you say you've given up sugar is this all sugars? Do you include honey in this as I have been looking about on the internet and some diets say give up honey but some no sugar recipes use it as a replacement for processed sugars? Also what are you're thoughts on sweetners? I can't decide if using them is potentially replacing bad with bad.

Gosh, I think I will stop now as I have lost count of the questions already and will just carry on wittering away if not careful :o

knitknack · 17/06/2012 21:06

I've given up ALL sugars and anything that is basically sugar as far as the body is concerned - so white flour etc. after reading a gazillion books and blogs I'm now eating 'paleo'.... Sort of! So no sugar or grains of any kind, nothing that spikes blood sugar.

My DH is on day 2 - this is going to be interesting!!

I've had to buy a belt this weekend!!

quirkychick · 17/06/2012 21:07

Ceebeegeebies are you exercising? That will tone you up and help you see a difference. As Shirl says lift heavy weights!
(safely,obviously)

I haven't lost any more weight (4lbs, so far) or inches round my waist (2") but the back fat has gone. I put on an old vintage jacket I've had since my mid 20s which 3 weeks ago was straining at the buttons and is now slighly loose. Yay!

knitknack · 17/06/2012 21:08

Roary - what's your username on MFP? And congrats on your little roar! :)

ceebeegeebies · 17/06/2012 21:14

Quirky Grin I do 4 or 5 hard cardio classes a week (combat/spinning etc) plus lift heavy weights (I often get on the machines after a man has been on there and put the weight up Wink) twice a week so I don't think exercise is an issue for me Wink

ceebeegeebies · 17/06/2012 21:17

Hearmyroar congrats on your baby Smile I just ignore the red writing at the bottom of MFP which tells me how much weight I am going to put on Wink

HearMyRoar · 17/06/2012 21:28

Gosh knitknack, I am terribly impressed and slightly in awe of you for going all out on the no sugar. I'll have to have a look into the paleo thing though I don't think I would manage that much at the moment. Sometimes cake is all that keeps me sane so I think I shall just be looking at where I can cut back for now. :o

Thanks ceebee, it was freaking me out a little bit so glad I can ignore it.

My username is same as on here.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 17/06/2012 22:24

Hello Roar :) I am BFing, and so is TurtleDoves. If you search for breastfeeding on MFP, you can add it like you do a food. I allow 300 cals per day because although my 'baby' is 14 months and has loads at one feed, he only feeds 2-3 times in 24 hours.
I find it easier to do it that way rather than set a higher goal, because I'm only worried about my net calories, not the overall numbers. That might sound like Swahili just now, but you will get in the swing :)

ceebee you just need to be patient. And perhaps swap one more cardio for strength?

I ate loads today, loads and loads. And I really thought I would be totally beyond on MFP. But I have made myself log everything, and although I am over, I've come in under my TDEE on my net calories. Which is amazing!

Just made my first fridge porridge ready for the morning.

Have you set your activity level high enough? Also, if you go on the weekly bit it shows you a graph and you can see if your calorie intake is consistent.

Hopefully · 18/06/2012 09:08

Hearmyroar I am not remotely strict about no sugar (as I will ably demonstrate at a first birthday party this afternoon Grin), but when I bake I tend to sub maple syrup or honey, depending on the recipe. I find honey tastes slightly sweeter to me, so I can use less, and I've read it spikes blood sugar slightly less, although not sure I buy that really.

Have been eating healthily but not logging for the past week, so am back on MFP trying to log things accurately again.

Struggling with energy levels at the moment as am insanely busy and exercising quite hard, so might up my cals to TDEE minus 10% to give me a few more to play with.

SuddenlyMadameGlamour · 18/06/2012 09:27

Well I have just noshed 1000 kcals in one sitting by having a sainsburys meat free breakfast and a latte! Dd kept me awake all night Angry and I had to dash out without breakfast, and the combo of tiredness and a rumbly tum meant I couldn't resist. However despite feeling a big sick now, I enjoyed every mouthful and will be walking the 6 mile round trip to pick dd up later (or might just leave her there, haven't decided yet)!

Btw I am a recent name changer, was on this thread before but can't say who I was due to potential outing in rl! Smile

SuddenlyMadameGlamour · 18/06/2012 09:29

Agave syrup is a good alternative to sugar, still tastes sweet but is low gi unlike honey etc. found some in tescos t'other day. Smile

tumteetum · 18/06/2012 09:47

Hi all, another lurker here. I have just joined mfp and am finding it hard to enter details as all meals are home made, but doing my best. I don't have much to lose, about 2kg, but am looking for a healthy way to eat.
My specific question relates to carbs and sugars. I eat quite a lot of fruit, though no other sugars. The goal for sugars seems so low (24g) that I have reached that by lunchtime. Does this matter? i am reluctant to miss out on the lovely fruit from my garden. I manage to be under total calories, am usually low on fat but ok for protein

TobyLerone · 18/06/2012 09:52

Hi tum :)

Most of us are basically ignoring the sugar/carbs from fruit.

Also, the recipes function on MFP is something I use quite a lot. Once you've saved the recipe for a particular homemade meal, you can just add it that way, rather than all the individual ingredients. It's a bit time-consuming at first, but worth it IMO.

Tried the toffee MyProtein shake this morning, with a banana, flaxseed, a bit of greek yogurt and hazelnut milk. It was ok. I'm still struggling with the idea of drinking a 'milkshake', and I'm sure the flavouring tastes a bit artificial, but I drank it and it was fine. I'll try chocolate tomorrow.

Hello chompers, and welcome to our new members!

Answers:

do I just ignore the projected weight it gives you at the bottom when you finish inputting your food for the day as mine just keeps telling me how fat I'm going to get?

Just ignore it

Do you include honey in this?

I don't, I add honey and some syrups to my diet, but a little and not very often If you want to break your sugar addiction, then the only way to do that IMO, is to completely cut it ALL out for a while (about a month). If this is something that you're interested in trying then there are a few EMTWLers who are giving it a go.

ceebee - Yep, are you making sure you eat back to your BMR (at least) every day? How are you calculating your calorie burns?

Tumtee - I eat fruit, as Toby says, I ignore the sugar goal (and in fact I think my diary isn't set up to show me my sugar intake anyway). If you're stuffing Mars bars down your neck as opposed to some fruit then you probably need to check that behaviour Grin but really, if you are eating lots of lovely homegrown fruit I really can't see an issue.

Had ANOTHER difficult weekend with lots of socialising and I was still a bit woozy from the sedative I had on Thursday so no gym for me.

SE that's really interesting, I didn't know that. Thanks! I must Google further...

knitknack · 18/06/2012 13:14

I'd stay WELL clear of Agave syryp/nectar if I were you - everything I've read about it says that it's higher in Fructose than HFCS!!

I am dipping a toe in here and have a question.

I have always had sensations of blood sugar crashes maybe 2-3 hourly (shakes, nausea, starving feeling etc) - even though my dirt isnt that refined or high in sugars compared with average Joe.

But lets say for some reason my body acts like this and I am just intolerant to sugars.

So I have incresed proteins and reduced carbs - am doing quite well at that.

I am consuming at about the 15% below the whatever it is, which is approx 1850 cals (the 15% reduced figure).

I am losing approx 1lb a week which is fabulous on 1850 cals BUT BUT BUT my very good scales are recording a gradual increase in body fat % (which was already really really unhealthy).

This isnt good is it? What's going on then?

I am 5 foot 5, weigh 10st 7lb and my body fat % is 33% (yikes!!!) due to taking no exercise cardio or resistance.

giraffe - That's really interesting (although I bet it feels very bloody NOT INTERESTING but frustrating for you). I think that there are a number of reasons for this anomoly...

a) Your scales are inaccurate. I think I've read that the only really accurate way to measure body fat is with those caliper thingies. or
b) Your lack of exercise means that you are not increasing muscle size - which is giving you some kink of shonky reading.

Regardless, do your clothes fit better? Are you feeling well?

Have you taken measurements? I shout about SAFTFBS because really, they can send us mad. Measurements are so much better and ultimately more important. I could be 10 stone 7lbs and still be in a size 14, or I could be 11 stone 5 and be wearing a size 12, DYKWIM?

OP posts:
TobyLerone · 18/06/2012 14:10

giraffe, it was you who did the thread last week about doing no exercise and wanting to lose weight, wasn't it?

What have you decided on that front? I think Shirley's right about the lack of exercise. YY take measurements and then take them again in a month.

Hopefully · 18/06/2012 14:17

SE I actually have the book, is the sugar stuff in there? I devoured it do quickly I probably missed loads.

giraffe17 · 18/06/2012 15:11

Ha! Yes was me so here i am. Xrcise i am going t try n gradually add in v small steps.
But i wld say frm this thread my lifstyle is moderate activity even without xtra xrcisr.

Cutting out carbs a lot has made me feel fuller for just a littl longer but more importantly those horrid pangs are not so severe.

Jst bit odd about the scales and body fat%. Tape measure shows no change but some clothes a shade looser on the tummy and scales say visceral fat gone down
