I'm starting this thread early as I'm off to Athens tomorrow, and will be leaving at sparrows fart. (It's mainly for work, although I have a day off on Thursday)

I think we're now a band of mainly hardcore low carbers, although we continue to attract new followers - welcome to you all!

Hopefully, the longer termers will be finding it much easier to follow this WOE and food choices are more automatic. Although I have noticed lots of references to cheesecake and crumble which just will not do if you're wanting the pounds to shift

Let me know how you're all doing - and any tips to share for those for whom the weight loss has slowed down.

what to eat post sickness bug

DD has a nasty stomach bug Tuesday, it was pretty predictable that I would get it given the number of times she was sick on me. I am now upright although a bit wobbly, I think the wobbles are from dehydration and no food for about 48hours. My back is crippling me and my stomach is also unhappy - what can I eat that is LC and yet easy on the stomach?

PostBellumBugsy · 15/06/2012 09:52

Slowly, you must drink. Have you got any peppermint tea, that would be quite soothing. Buy yourself some broth or consomme or make some bovril, as this will get a bit of salt into your system too.

Secondly, if you need to do a day on dry crackers & rice - it is not the end of the diet. I had severe food poisoning when I did this WOE before and I had to take about 2 weeks off & eat soup & rice, as everything else went through me in about half an hour. Once my body got back to normal, I went back to the WOE, no problem.

slowlyburningcalories · 15/06/2012 09:59

Thank you Bugsy I have lost 7lbs through dehydration, haven't any bovril but have oxo cubes. Had a cup of tea earlier but that just made me feel ill so too early for dairy obviously.

The back pain is crippling, might dare some paracetamol, hope to god I don't have a kidney infection - it was one hell of a bug

PostBellumBugsy · 15/06/2012 10:07

If you are dehydrated, your kidneys could be aching. I can't think of a better way to put it, but when I get badly dehydrated my kidneys literally ache.
Do you have any dioralyte? This is a good way to get your electrolytes back in balance & rehydrate.
Please have a big glass of water now & if you are going to have paracetamol, try and nibble something first. Even though paracetamol isn't like ibuprofen, it probably isn't a very good idea to take them on a completely empty stomach.
I'm not a doctor or in any way medically qualified - so these are just my thoughts based on my own experience.

dreamofwhitehorses · 15/06/2012 10:14

Just wanted to share Lidl Nuremberg sausages. only one gram of carbs and at £2 for 14 loads cheaper than Black Farmer!

I fell of the waggon quite badly last week and am shocked at how similar my body's response was to when I gave up smoking. The craving, the awful brain fog, the crippling tiredness - and then after two days it lifted and I had enough energy to declutter my entire kitchen! But calling it an addiction is not an exaggeration, and the complete silence on this from the health service and government is quite shocking. (I missed the programme last night but it sound really interesting)

One other thing, having suffered from anxiety and panic attacks for the last 20 years, I have just realised that since starting this WOE they are probably about 75% better!

Oh and I miss lentils. Will I be able to eat them again when I get to maintaining?

Jins · 15/06/2012 10:24

I eat lentils in maintenance. They are quite high in carbs - between 30- 40g per 100 of cooked lentils but I assume 10g for a portion.

Maintenance is quite frankly the trickiest part of the whole WOE and I really recommend taking your time to get there. I'm maintaining around 80-100g daily but it really matters where the carbs come from. You could look at 100g and assume that there's capacity there for a sandwich but in fact it doesn't work like that.

slowlyburningcalories · 15/06/2012 10:35

Yup - its a kidney sort of place. I have had severe kidney infections before (many years ago) and this has all the hallmarks, I have drunk the oxo drink and about to go do some pottering about jobs, then I'll try the breadsticks route.

DH thoughtfully got nothing other than his dinner when he went out yesterday so there is nothing at all in the house!

Jins · 15/06/2012 10:41

I found ryvita quite useful for post sickness.

NigellasGuest · 15/06/2012 10:56

I have been able to cut right down on AD's since starting this WOE.
Still monitoring, obviously!

SpringGoddess · 15/06/2012 11:05

I'd have chicken soup to recover or miso soup.

I think people have been misled on fruit too - I understood it wasn't originally part of the whole 5 a day message but it was added because they thought 5 veg a day wasn't an achievable goal. The sad thing with all these so called health messages is that they become corrupted by the food industry - think of all those so called healthy dried fruit bars - they are 99% sugar but still count towards the 5 a day - drinking a large glass of OJ is not good for you but many people mistakingly believe it is as it counts towards the 5 a day.

Many Australian kids were consuming large quantities of fruit juices and not surprisingly many of these kids became fat, their parents had thought because it was fruit juice and healthy their kids could have as much as they wanted. Fruit can provide good nutrients to the body but it needs to be eaten in moderate quantities - the message at the moment is eat as much as you like.

Spring, my mother has been Type 1 diabetic for over 40 years & I am shocked by the advice the diabetic clinic give her. Whilst they are not advocating she eat sweets, they basically suggest a low fat / high carb diet.

For lunch every day my mum eats bread & vegetable soup followed by a banana & another piece of fruit (usually grapes!). No protein, virtually no fat so almost 100% carbs. She suffers badly with severe blood sugar swings, which cause all sorts of problems. I've tried to suggest to her that eating such a high carb diet may not be a good idea - but she will not have it. She eats loads of fruit, believing that it is healthy. The fruits she likes the most are the sweetest & most carby. It makes me feel sad, particularly as her sight is almost destroyed from having high blood sugar.

Jins · 15/06/2012 11:18

Fruit is my main bugbear. It used to drive me mad when my kids were only allowed to bring fruit and fruit juice as snacks to school. There'd have been less sugar in a kitkat and a can of coke sometimes.

I have an extended family member who has bought into the low fat mantra. She's been overweight all the time I've known her. Her children are on low fat foods, skimmed milk, yogurts, cheese etc and must have at least 3 fruit portions a day. They have never been allowed desserts, rarely have chips, rarely eat anywhere that she can't control food intake and both of them are overweight. They are still at primary school so there's plenty of time for rebellion :)

Fruit makes me ill. If I drink a glass of orange juice I will be sick. If I eat an apple I will get unbelievable stomach cramps. Doctors refuse to believe it though!

WillieWaggledagger · 15/06/2012 12:21

i have to say i haven't been able to resist a few berries now and then and I do miss apples, but they did always make me bloated

(and on saturday when we went to dp's parents' for supper and we had strawberries for pudding - oh good think I, this is an okish LC pudding, but they have put SUGAR on them - who does that??)

a woman at work has crowns on her two front teeth because of the amount of fruit juice she used to drink

dreamofwhitehorses · 15/06/2012 12:25

The thing is I don't feel that I'm now eating a 'high' fat diet. In fact I've found eating fat is pretty self limiting as it fills you up and doesn't make you crave more -unlike sugar. What I'm not doing is automatically choosing low fat. I can't believe how long I've been unquestionly eating margarine instead of butter for example. I should add that I've not even been 'dieting' these have just been everyday food choices for me, which shows how much effect propaganda from the food industy has.

Thanks for the advice about lentils Jins, I used to eat meat very rarely and now its nearly every day, which I'm not overly keen on (and can't really afford)

dreamofwhitehorses · 15/06/2012 12:30

Nigellasguest That's great Smile I'm not claiming any miracle cure but something seems to have changed.

WillieWaggledagger · 15/06/2012 12:35

totally agree dream

just had a slice of pizza quiche for lunch yum

catinboots · 15/06/2012 12:52

Hello

Can I join?? I have been lurking on these threads for the last few weeks. For various reasons I haven't been able to start a proper diet till this week. I've LC'd before in the past with success but am now 2st heavier than I would like to be.

I am currently on day 3 of low carbing and not feeling hungry which is good. I did make the fatal mistake of weighing myself this morning and I'm 2lb heavier Shock

I know I'm probably not in ketosis yet but I need one of you experts to come along and reassure me this is normal.

cat x

BIWItheBold · 15/06/2012 13:01

Welcome, catinboots!

Why not wait until the full week is up before you weigh?

Just make sure you're following Bootcamp rules properly! No-one else on here takes any notice of me though

Yes - I'm going to hide my scales in the cupboard as I'm a compulsive weigher.

What day is Bootcamp weigh-in??

slowlyburningcalories · 15/06/2012 13:09

My scales have broken - DD dropped them a few weeks ago and they are now well and truly naffed.

So - what to buy? I want something which will work on carpet and not too expensive. Have to buy a new hairdryer too due to another toddler related incident.

Jins · 15/06/2012 13:57

I don't take any notice of you BIWI if that's any comfort Grin

RatherBeOnThePiste · 15/06/2012 14:12

I am still here lovely BIWI, maintaining more than losing, but still going along Smile

leanbh21 · 15/06/2012 14:23

cat I weighed 2lb over on D3 too if that's any consolation. I weighed this morning (D6) and I'm 8lb down so I wouldn't pay too much notice to that.

I felt awful last night and this morning. I suspect that I didn't eat enough for dinner last night as I just had the leftovers from the night before (about 2 Tbs of veggie mince curry with sour cream) and added a bunch of veggies to it. I think perhaps there was neither enough protein nor far in that meal. I had a fried egg and 3 mushrooms fried in butter for b'fast and still felt lousy and really hungry so after taking the two older DCs to school I had 2 sticks celery and Brie but not much better. Went shopping to Tescos and even walked down the meat aisle eyeing up all the low/zero carb meats. I got as far as picking up a packet of bacon but then worried I might feel more ill if I ate meat after all these years (been veggie for 20 yrs). I did get some tuna steaks and had one of those in chili butter sauce with mushrooms and celeriac roasted and with some cheddar on top for lunch and I feel MILES better. I may have to eat some tuna more often. I did have it for the omega oils when pregnant so I know I can tolerate it. Also decided I may just have to have some Quorn or else I'll be mega bored of eggs and cheese. It seems to vary from 4-8g protein per 100g so I reckon sticking to the 4g stuff shouldn't hold me back too far.

Any tips from other veggies on this WOE?

HumphreyCobbler · 15/06/2012 14:41

I feel great today. Have lost 5lb and it has made a real difference to the way my clothes fit, and I have gone down a bra size. I am back to within my 'normal' weight range, and although I would like to lose another stone, I feel more in control.
