I'm starting this thread early as I'm off to Athens tomorrow, and will be leaving at sparrows fart. (It's mainly for work, although I have a day off on Thursday)

I think we're now a band of mainly hardcore low carbers, although we continue to attract new followers - welcome to you all!

Hopefully, the longer termers will be finding it much easier to follow this WOE and food choices are more automatic. Although I have noticed lots of references to cheesecake and crumble which just will not do if you're wanting the pounds to shift

Let me know how you're all doing - and any tips to share for those for whom the weight loss has slowed down.

Callanetics involves very small controlled movements that work the muscles very deeply. It looks like they are doing next to nothing until you try them and it hurts. I could not do classic " bouncing around" aerobics for a while and bought this as an alternative and it has been amazing. It does not add bulk- it lengthens and tones the muscles which is why my shape has changed so noticeably I think.

SingingTunelessly · 14/06/2012 19:25

Callenatics, that's a blast from the past. I remember doing that back in -1990 a while ago. It was good if a bit punishing. Think I have the original video still, will dig it out.

RadioSilence · 14/06/2012 19:31

The hairstyles and make up do take me back a bit. There are some cracking perms in it too!

HumphreyCobbler · 14/06/2012 20:30

Hello. I broke through the withdrawal barrier today and felt really well all day. Not feeling hungry, no cravings and ate kale with anchovy and chilli dressing for dinner. It was delicious.

I have also kept up with the exercise. I like shred because it is so short, however much I exercise I never enjoy it so want it to be over asap.

ohforfoxsake · 14/06/2012 21:21

The Men Who Made us Fat is on BBC2 now. Very interesting - currently talking about the use of corn syrup in food. I hadn't really thought about it much, but it came up on a Macdonald's thread the other week. Bit of an eye opener, I didn't realise it was in so much fast food.

ohforfoxsake · 14/06/2012 21:23

You know you are a low carber when you get more excited about finding a jar of sun-dried tomatoes in the back of the fridge to use the oil on salad, that finding a cadbury's cream egg squirreled away at easter.

teaandthorazine · 14/06/2012 21:30

Grin fox

Good to see Jacques Peretti laying into sugar, not fat! Well, so far, anyway...

HumphreyCobbler · 14/06/2012 21:34

ooh, mentioning fat...

teaandthorazine · 14/06/2012 21:52

Is it weird to kinda slightly fancy Gary Taubes a little bit? I think it's his drawly voice... Blush

Tea, Gary is all mine - hands off!!!!! Wink I've fancied him for quite a while.
Great programme, so pleased to see some well considered investigation into how it serves the food industry well to keep consumers shovelling down the sugar.

vnmum · 14/06/2012 22:17

I agree, it was a good program. It didn't strictly advocate low carb but definately showed the demons of sugar and processed food and also how you cannot trust the food companies. Hopefully it will make some of those people who think that sugar is not the problem and that our woe is a fad think again

leanbh21 · 14/06/2012 22:31

Have recorded that. Look forward to watching it.

Felt quite good today (D5). Even got through a whole day at work without snacking which is unheard of in recent history. I did think about snacks but I don't think I was genuinely hungry, just out of habit. Still daydreaming about Boost bars though?

Can I ask about painkillers. Mega period started today (I think I recall someone else on progesterone pill mentioning this in the early threads) but I was nervous to take anything in case it had any sugars in. Anyone know?

londonone · 14/06/2012 23:37

Hello all, have been on holiday so no posting but back on the wagon with a vengeance. Don't tend to post that much but just wanted to say a huge thanks to all who do post as these threads are so supportive and inspirational.

SharonGless · 15/06/2012 08:02

Morning all,

Very interested about the Callanetics - having a look now. Disaster yesterday- I prepped my yoghurt and salad to take to work but DC were mithering me so I forgot my food and left it at home. Fortunately one of my girls got me a salad for lunch but a special k bar for breakfast. I bloody hate special k at the best of times!
Anyway stayed on track apart from the wine

SharonGless · 15/06/2012 08:04

Leanbh1 I would just take the painkillers if you need them. The things to watch out for is things like Berocca, cough syrup, throat sweets etc.
Hope you feel ok today and it is about breaking the habit of snacking. I used to graze all day, both at work and home but have stopped now and rarely have a snack.

BIWItheBold · 15/06/2012 08:05

leanbh21 - the only sugar painkillers may contain, as far as I am aware, is if they have a shiny coating - like some Nurofen - which make them easier to swallow. And I don't even know if this is actually sugar. That said, the amount they are likely to contain will be small. If you're in pain, please don't suffer.

I'm back, and have managed to eat low carb most of the time - I have to confess to eating a bit of potato here and there, but no bread/pasta/rice. We did drink a lot of wine though, which won't have done me any favours. I have a party to go to tonight - a work reunion - and then after that, back on the wagon in a very definite way for me. Back to Bootcamp I think.

Bad luck about the special K bar Sharon. It's so easy to forget things when you are dashing about.

Great news here on day5. Need to wear black trousers today and was eyeing my french connection linen ones. Thought they would be far too small but they fit, if a little tight. Am wearing with a long top and huge black pants in case of splitting (it's a funeral so would be a disaster!)

Am feeling energised and good today. Loving the info and support here. Thanks so much.

sybilfaulty · 15/06/2012 08:08

Welcome back BIWI. Hope you had a good time. Envious of the wine!

Can I just ask - I've been snacking a lot. COmbination of PMT and getting used to this WOE. That will be OK providing I don't go off plan, won't it?

studyingstudying · 15/06/2012 08:21

Hello everyone,

I am still struggling with sugar cravings - had a rubbish, very stressful and panicky day at uni yesterday which resulted in quite a few peanut m&ms last night...oops.

So I am starting again! Have just had 2 scrambled eggs for breakfast and today is going to be better! (i.e. my computer is going to work and not corrupt all my files)

sybil I find that my breakfast/lunch can be made up of snacky type food, but then I am hardly a model bootcamper at the moment, so I'm probably not the best person to ask!

SpringGoddess · 15/06/2012 08:32

leanbh the sugar that coats a pill is minute - really don't worry about it - if everything else in your eating is compliant you'll be fine.

Thought the program was good - nothing new but I'm sure for a lot of people it will come as a bit of a surprise. I think they have taken the right approach - no one, not even the low fat dieters defend sugar as a healthy food - especially chemically processed sugar like corn syrup.

I think once you have people on board about sugar and the effect it has on weight gain in the body, it's very easy to follow on and show that refined carbs have exactly the same effect. But, if you mentioned carbs to begin with you'd turn people off straight away - you all know how threatened people feel when you start talking about taking away their beloved carbs and feeding them the demon fat! Baby steps people - that's what's needed, quiet little baby steps - this is only the first programme there are 2 more to come.

On a separate issue I think it won't be long before a diabetic sues the NHS for giving them shit advice on their diet and encouraging them to eat carbs - the very thing that is making them ill because frankly i believe the NHS are jointly responsible for millions of people getting very bloody sick and dying prematurely from diabetes. If the dietary advice is wrong - how can you only blame the individual?

SpringGoddess · 15/06/2012 08:34

programme [ smile]

BIWItheBold · 15/06/2012 08:41

sybil - snacking is fine

a) if you're eating low carb/high fat snacks
b) if you're eating because you're hungry and not because it's a habit

We see 3 meals a day plus snacks in between as a 'normal' way of eating. It has become so because we need to eat regularly to keep our blood sugar stable - in other words, we're trying to increase a blood sugar level that has first spiked high after consumption of a lot of carbs (cereal and toast and fruit for breakfast, say) and then plummeted at around 11.00 am. The same thing happens after lunch - sandwich, packet of crisps, chocolate bar - which means we reach for the cake/biscuit tin around 3.00 pm.

If you read any diet programme now, you will see that they build snacks or the ability to snack, into the diet. How many syns, etc, are you allowed?

The great advantage of eating low carb is that your blood sugar level will be much more stable and the highs and lows will be much less pronounced - and this means that your hunger will also be under control. A good low carb breakfast (e.g. scrambled eggs made with butter) will means that you will not be ravenous by 11.00 am and you may even find yourself working away and not realising that it's lunchtime! I regularly find that I don't even start to think about food until about 1.30 or even 2.00 pm. That would never have happened before, when I was eating a 'normal' diet.

So when you find yourself reaching for a snack, think about whether you're doing so because it's habitual, or if you are really hungry. And then the advice is clear. If you are hungry, eat!

SG i think the idea people really struggle with wrt low carb is little/no fruit - many people really can't get on board with that, especially with the 5 a day thing. though i think the 5 a day advice has always been to go more for vegetables than fruit (?) but i expect people ignore that part because fruit is sweeter!

HokeyCokeyPigInAPokey · 15/06/2012 09:16

Willie you are right, i am trying to avoid making eye contact with the bananas every time i walk past the fruit bowl!!
